Communique on the activity of Etna, May 21, 2023, 08:36 (06:36 UTC).
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, communicates that cloud cover persists in the summit area of the volcano, so it is not possible to make volcanological observations through the video surveillance network. The simulation of the possible dispersion of the volcanic plume indicates a South-West direction. From 5:20 UTC, the volcanic tremor, already at the high level, records a sudden increase in values. The source of the tremor and the location of the infrasonic events are unreliable. The ETNAS system is in F1 status. Regarding the deformations, only the PLC inclinometer station currently records a modest variation (less than 1 microrad). Over the past few hours, the DRUV stress signal is recording a decompression phase.

From a seismic and infrasound point of view, the situation has not changed significantly compared to the previous press release. The ETNAS system is in F2 status.
Regarding the deformation in the current phase, only the summit inclinometer station of the PLC registers a modest variation. For the past few hours, the deformation signal from the DRUV station has recorded the start of a decompression phase

Statement on the activity of Etna, May 21, 2023, 21:02 (19:02 UTC)
The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, communicates that from the analysis of the images of the video surveillance network, it is observed that there is a lava flow coming out of the Southeast crater; the lava flow develops west of Monte Frumento Supino. At this time, it is not possible to establish the position of the most advanced lava front due to the variability of cloud cover.

Mexico , Popocatepetl :
May 21, 12:00 p.m. (May 21, 6:00 p.m. GMT)
During the 81st meeting of the scientific advisory committee of the Popocatépetl volcano which was held yesterday May 20 and on the basis of the analysis of the information available in recent days, it was recommended to change the phase of the alert traffic light volcanic from yellow phase 2 to yellow phase 3, which constitutes a preventive measure against the observed changes.
During the last 24 hours, according to the monitoring systems of the Popocatépetl volcano, 31 exhalations accompanied by water vapor, volcanic gases and ash have been detected. In addition, 1,136 minutes of low to large amplitude high frequency tremors were recorded, associated with the continuous emission of gas, water vapor and ash, as well as, on occasion, the expulsion of incandescent material a short distance from the volcano. Also, four minor explosions were recorded yesterday at 10:47 a.m., 12:47 p.m., 9:36 p.m., 10:38 p.m. and 11:34 p.m. local time and two moderate explosions yesterday at 2:54 p.m. and 10:53 p.m. local time.
CENACOM (National Center for Communication and Civil Protection Operations) yesterday reported ash falls in the municipalities of Juchitepec, Amecameca, Cocotitlán, Valle de Chalco, Ixtapaluca, La Paz, Nezahualcóyotl, Tlalmanalco and Chalco in the state of Mexico. As well as in Huejotzingo, Nealtican, Chignahuapan, Puebla Capital, San Martín Texmelucan and San Felipe Teotlalcingo, municipalities of Puebla. To date, there is a report in the municipalities of San Andrés Cholula, San Pedro Cholula, Cuautlancingo, Amozoc, Puebla Capital, Zacatlán, Tetela de Ocampo and Chignahuapan belonging to Puebla.
At the time of this report, there is partial visibility towards the volcano due to weather conditions in the area. However, a constant emission of water vapor, volcanic gases and light amounts of ash was observed towards the East (E).
May 21, 7:00 p.m. (May 22, 01:00 GMT)
Update: The episode of tremor recorded over the past few hours continues until the time of this update. Due to weather conditions, there is no visibility towards the volcano, however for short periods, it was possible to observe an almost continuous emission of ash. Any changes in activity will be reported in a timely manner

Indonesia , Ibu :
G. Ibu presented an eruption on Sunday, May 21, 2023 at 9:40 p.m. WIT with the height of the ash column observed at ± 1000 m above the summit (± 2325 m above sea level). The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity, oriented to the west. This eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 mm and a duration of 88 seconds.

Ecuador , Sangay :
DAILY REPORT OF THE STATE OF SANGAY VOLCANO, Sunday May 21, 2023.
Information Geophysical Institute – EPN.
Surface Activity Level: High, Surface Trend: Unchanged
Internal activity level: High, Internal trend: No change
Seismicity: From May 20, 2023, 11:00 a.m. to May 21, 2023, 11:00 a.m.:
There are no seismicity data.
Emission / Ash Column:
Since 8:00 p.m. local time yesterday (20/05/2023), there has been a constant emission of ash which reached less than 2 km above the crater with a low to moderate ash load. The direction and speed of the winds caused moderate ash fall in some cantons of the province of Chimborazo (Alausi: Tixán and Guamote: Palmira, Cebadas) until the publication of this report, according to the SGR.
Gas:
The Mounts satellite system reported 369.6 tons of SO2 on the Sangay volcano, recorded at 2:28 p.m. TL yesterday May 20, 2023.
Observation:
The volcano remained cloudy most of the time without allowing us to observe the ash column. However, at night, an incandescence could be seen at the level of the crater.
Rains / Lahars:
Light rains were highlighted in the region, without generating signs of lahars. **In the event of heavy rains, these could remobilize the accumulated materials, generating mudslides and debris that would descend the flanks of the volcano and flow into the adjacent rivers.**
Alert level: Orange.

Guatemala , Santiaguito :
Weather conditions: Clear
Wind: North-East
Precipitation: 0.2 mm.
Activity:
The Santiaguito OVSAN observatory reports a dispersed degassing in a South and South-West direction. Several weak to moderate explosions were recorded, expelling columns of gas and ash, which disperse to the south and southwest. At night, an incandescence was observed on the dome of the Caliente dome and in the westward lava flow.
Weak to moderate, constant avalanches are recorded on the south and south-east flanks and in the lava flow. The volcano maintains high activity due to the extrusion of blocky lava into the cupola of the Caliente dome in a west-southwest direction and unstable material within the crater. There is a likelihood of moderate to strong pyroclastic flows so do not stay near or in riverbeds near the slopes of the volcano.
