Kamchatka , Sheveluch :

The Sheveluch volcano in Kamchatka emitted a column of ash at a height of nearly 7 km.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, December 20 – AIF-Kamchatka. Sheveluch Volcano today afternoon, local time, launched a column of ash at a height of 6.7 km above sea level, reported the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical Service of the Academy of Sciences from Russia.

The volcano is covered by dense clouds and it is impossible to determine the direction of the ash plume. According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, there are no ash falls in communities in the region.


An « orange » aviation hazard code (warning) is assigned to the volcano. International aircraft movement routes in the Sheveluch region are prohibited. Tour groups in the volcano area are not allowed.

Colombia , Nevado del Huila:

Subject: Weekly activity bulletin of the Nevado del Huila volcano.
The level of activity of the volcano continues at the level: Yellow activity level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

According to the analysis and evaluation of the information obtained through the surveillance network of the Nevado del Huila volcano, during the week of December 11 to 17, 2018, the Colombian Geological Observatory – Volatological and Seismological Observatory of Popayán indicates that:

• During the evaluated period, 192 seismic events were recorded, 94 related to rock fracturing processes (type VT) and 98 to fluid dynamics in volcanic canals. Of these, 89 were classified as long-period events (LP type), six (6) were related to both fracture mechanisms and fluid dynamics; they were therefore classified as hybrid types (type HB) and three (3). as tremor pulses with low energy input (type TR).

• The images obtained during the week by the web cameras of Caloto, Tafxnú, Maravillas and La Palma showed the degassing processes of the volcanic system.
• Sensors for monitoring soil deformation, magnetic fields, and infrasound did not record any variations associated with changes in volcanic activity.

Therefore, it is concluded that the volcano exhibited stable behavior during the evaluated period. The Colombian geological service is attentive to the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will inform in due time any changes that may occur.

Activity:
Presence of light gray degassing with an approximate height of 4200 meters. There are reported 6 to 10 low to moderate explosions per hour, ejecting columns of gray ash at an approximate height of 4200 to 4300 meters (1800 to 14108 feet) dispersing east and northeast over a approximate distance between 10 and 12 kilometers. There are rumblings with weak shock waves, degassing sounds with a time interval between 1 and 2 minutes. Incandescent impulses at a height of approximately 100 meters above the crater generate weak avalanches on the crater contour and towards Barrancas Seca, Taniluyá, Ceniza, Trinidad and Las Lajas. Ash falls are reported in the communities of Panimache I and II, Morelia, Santa Sofia, El Porvenir, Finca Palo Verde, Sangre de Cristo, Yepocapa and others located in this direction.

Costa Rica , Turrialba / Poas :

Daily report on the state of volcanoes. OVSICORI-UNA, Date: 20/12/2018, Updated at: 09:47:00.

Turrialba Volcano:
No eruptions are reported.
The seismic activity is similar to that of yesterday.
At the time of this report, winds are blowing from the north.
The degassing and volcanic earthquakes are maintained; but, unchanged from yesterday. No report of falling ashes.

Poas Volcano:
On December 20, 2018, at 8:16 local time, an eruption was recorded on the Poas volcano, with a column at least 50 meters above the height of the crater.
Duration of the activity: 1 minute.
The seismic activity is similar to that of yesterday.
At the time of this report, winds are blowing from the south.

At 2:56, there was a tremor that lasted about 4 minutes and after 7:00, the amplitude of the seismic signal increased a little in the VPEM station and at 8:16, there was a phreatic eruption , cypresssoid type that lasted a short time. Yesterday, at 08:30, the degassing increased from the main pipe and it lasted several minutes. In general, columns of steam and pressurized gas have been reported since last Monday, which may be due to the (almost total) disappearance of the acidic lake. There is no increase in volcanic earthquakes.
