Costa Rica , Irazú:

The Irazu volcano’s lagoon changes color after the crater’s inner wall has slipped.

The lagoon of Irazú volcano has changed color after a landslide of the inner wall of the crater, recorded on Thursday, May 2nd.
Regularly, it has a blue-green tone, but after the event, it became more turbid.
After that, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) reported that the material that had fallen was in place for many years.
« It is clear that the material was loose and that it had been there for more than 50 years, then over time, consistency was lost and this type of situation is generated, » said Eliécer Duarte, of Ovsicori.

He added that the color change is due to the mixing that occurs after the fall.
« The fall caused waves in the lake, which had happened on at least two occasions, the lagoon is relatively stable and homogeneous, and when it changes, the density changes, » said the expert.

For its part, Volcanoes Sin Fronteras said that the event, recorded in the western sector of the active crater of the volcano, had also formed small islands in the lagoon.
« When the materials have fallen into the lake, a wave has formed (tsunami in a lake), even on the walls of the crater, it is possible to observe the signs, which can reach 10 meters in height.
« In addition, there is a color change in the crater walls near the lake, » the organization said.

Due to the event, the Irazú Volcano National Park is functioning normally, as the landslide is not related to volcanic activity.
In the previous December, it was the lagoon of the Poás volcano that had changed color, turning to turquoise green.
For the moment, the experts said the event was due to the fact that the volcano has two pockets of activity under the lagoon that permanently inject sulfur dioxide.

On Thursday, May 2 at 12:54 pm, part of the interior wall of Irazú volcano crater slipped, as shown by the image taken by Marco Solano. The other image shows the recording produced by the landslide recorded in the VICA seismic station located in the area.

El Salvador , San Miguel (Chaparrastique ) :

Location: San Miguel Department
Altitude: 2130 meters above sea level.
Type of volcano: Stratovolcano
Attraction type: Strombolian – Vulcanian
Last major eruption: December 29, 2013.

The values of the seismic vibration fluctuated very nearly 50 units. The values ranged from 42 to 59 RSAM units per average day. A total of six (6) low amplitude earthquakes (M1 <1.7) were recorded and located on the northern flank of the volcano. No earthquakes were perceived by the population living in the area.

Emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) have fluctuated between 27 and 825 tonnes per day, with the threshold at 620 t / d and the average of 311 t / d. The monitoring data indicate that the activity of the volcano changes periodically and that sudden changes in its behavior with probability of gas and ash emission are not excluded.
