Activity report of the Merapi volcano, April 17-23, 2020
OBSERVATION RESULTS.
Visuals:
The weather around Mount Merapi is generally sunny in the morning and at night, while the day until the afternoon is foggy. There is a white smoke, of low thickness to thick with low pressure. The maximum smoke height of 150 m was observed from the Mount Merapi observation post in Kaliurang on April 23, 2020 at 8:00 a.m.
Morphological analysis of the crater area based on photographs of the Southeast sector did not show any morphological change in the dome. The volume of the lava dome based on measurements using aerial photography with drones on February 19, 2020 amounted to 291,000 m3.
Seismicity:
During this week, the seismicity of Mount Merapi recorded:
20 emission earthquake (DG),
77 multi-phase earthquakes (MP),
19 avalanche earthquakes. (RF),
2 low frequency earthquakes (LF)
13 tectonic earthquakes (TT).
The seismic intensity this week is lower than last week.
Deformation
The RK2 and RK3 reflectors cannot be measured due to the impact of the March 3, 2020 eruption. The deformation of G. Merapi monitored by EDM this week did not show significant changes.
Rain and lahars:
This week, April 17, 2020, there was rain at the Mount Merapi observation post with the highest rain intensity of 37 mm / hour at the Kaliurang post.
Conclusion:
Based on the results of the visual and instrumental observations, it was concluded that:
1. The lava dome is currently in a stable state.
2. The volcanic activity of Mount Merapi is still quite high and is determined by the level of activity « WASPADA ».

Weekly bulletin from 04/14/2020 to 04/21/2020
(Update from April 21, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. local time).
SUMMARY OF THE ACTIVITY
In light of the monitoring data:
1) Seismicity: This past week, in the Campi Flegrei area, 21 earthquakes were recorded (Mdmax = 1.1).
2) Deformation: The average value of the uplift of about 0.7 cm / month since July 2017 in the zone of maximum deformation showed an increase in the weeks between the end of November and the beginning of December, then returned to the usual average values after the swarm of December 6. The lift recorded at the RITE GPS station has been approximately 61.5 cm since January 2011.
3) Geochemistry: The flow of CO2 from the ground measured last week did not show any significant change compared to the previous period, which confirms the persistence of the long-term trend; last week, the temperature of the main fumarole of Pisciarelli showed an average value of around 115 ° C.
The CO2 flux values from the ground recorded continuously by the FLXOV8 station in Pisciarelli (external north-eastern slope of the Solfatara), highlight the continuous trend over several years already identified above (see monthly reports). The flow of CO2 from the ground, measured in the past week has shown no significant change from the previous period. In the last week, the main Pisciarelli fumarole temperature recorded continuously showed an average value of about 115 ° C, in agreement with the values recorded in previous periods.

Costa Rica , Rincon de la Vieja :
April 24, 2020. During the morning a small column of water vapor and gas was observed in the crater of the Rincón de la Vieja Volcano. Vapor exhalations were generated with gas and water with low seismic and sonic energy, with plumes about 500 meters high, the first at 05:34 h and the second at 06:56 local time .
Activity report of the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, April 24, 2020.
On April 24, 2020 at 10:18 local time, an eruption was recorded on the Rincon de la Vieja volcano, with a column that rose 300 meters above the height of the crater, 2216 meters above level from the sea (7268.48 ft).
Duration of the activity: (40 seconds) 0.7 minutes.
Reported ash fall: no report
Reported sulfur odor: no report.

Comments:
Another small hydrothermal explosion or vapor exhalation with gas, water and sediment with low seismic and sonic energy was recorded by seismographs and the infrasonic system of the Rincón de la Vieja volcano on April 24, 2020 at 10:18 am. The explosion recorded in the infrasonic system with a sound energy of 7×10 Joules and on seismographs with a seismic signal with an energy of 3×10 Joules. This hydrothermal explosion was a little more energetic than the previous 2 reported in the morning. The OVSICORI webcam located in Sensoria, 4 km north of the crater, recorded a plume composed of columns of sediment up to 300 m high and a column of white water vapor and gases which expanded and reached almost 1000 m above the crater. So far, no new lahars have been reported in the rivers flowing from the northern flank of the volcano.

INCREASE IN EFFUSIVE ACTIVITY, 2 ACTIVE LAVA FLOWS.
INSIVUMEH has been reporting since 19 April a lava flow towards the Ceniza ravine. On the evening of April 23 of the current year, the effusive activity of the Fuego Volcano increased. The staff of the Fuego Volcano Observatory visualized a second lava flow towards the Seca ravine with a length of about 170 meters. This information was confirmed today by the analysis of satellite images and data from the instrumental network. The lava flow to the Ceniza ravine has been active since April 19 and is currently 200 meters long. On the front of these lava flows, blocks are constantly released and some reach the vegetation. More specifically, in the Seca ravine they move up to 520 meters and in the Ceniza ravine, over 240 meters.
Figure 1: Sentinel 2 satellite image. The two lava flows currently active and which generate avalanches.
The two lava flows can extend in length and can even be extended to other ravines. This activity is accompanied by an almost constant glow in the crater and weak and moderate explosions which generate avalanches around the crater in all directions which reach up to 1 km and descend to the vegetation. The explosive activity generates rumblings, shock waves and columns of ash up to an altitude of 4800 m (15,748 feet).
Figure 2: Radiance values generated by the glow in the crater. Data collected by the GOES 16 satellite.
The glow generated by avalanches and lava flows increases the radiance values.
It is possible to observe that the curve in Figure 2 reaches values up to 3.0 corresponding to the first active lava flow; values up to 2.0 are then recorded confirming the continuity of the effusive activity. The usual volcanic activity (without lava flows) generates values not higher than 0.6.
