Etna Activity Report, 28 February 2025, 13:33 (12:33 UTC) .

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, reports that ground observations by INGV-OE personnel have revealed the presence of a small degassing crater on the southern flank of the Bocca Nuova crater at an altitude of about 3100 m above sea level. At 06:00 UTC, a modest lava overflow began from the Southeast crater, forming a small flow on the upper southern flank of the crater; this overflow is currently being exhausted and cooled. In the same Southeast crater, the Strombolian activity that began yesterday evening continues. In addition, the continuation of variable rate effusive activity is observed from the fissure at the southern base of the Bocca Nuova crater, forming a lava arm to the south of the lava field of recent weeks.

In the hours following the previous announcement, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor continued to increase progressively and around 00:30 UTC today it first reached the high value range and around 03:30 UTC the maximum value, on which it more or less stabilized up to the current state. The centroid locations of the tremor sources seem to be located in correspondence with the Southeast Crater, at an altitude of about 2,900 m above sea level. A lively and turbulent situation continued throughout the night and continues today.
Infrasound activity continues. Infrasound events, which present amplitudes with average values, are located in the Southeast Crater. Between 7 and 10 UTC, the inclinometric stations of Monte Conca and Rifugio Citelli recorded a transient deformation lower than 2 microradians. Other stations in the inclinometer network and GPS data do not show significant variations.

Further updates will be communicated shortly

Statement on Stromboli activity, 28 February 2025, 13:45 (12:45 UTC) .

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, reports that thanks to the analysis of surveillance camera images, a lava overflow from the North Crater area has been observed since 13:07 GMT, associated with a modest lava fountain at the N2 vent. Currently, the lava flow front is located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco. At the same time, ordinary explosive activity continues unchanged in the North and Central-South Crater areas.

From a seismic perspective, since about 11:30 UTC today, the average amplitude of volcanic tremor has shown a marked increase in its values, moving from the low to very high range in less than an hour. No significant changes have been reported in the occurrence rate and amplitude of explosion earthquakes. Permanent deformation data from the GPS network show no significant changes.

Further updates will be provided shortly.

MOUNT MERAPI ACTIVITY REPORT, February 21-27, 2025

OBSERVATION RESULT
Visual
The weather around Mount Merapi is generally sunny in the morning, while during the day and evening it is hazy. White smoke, thin to thick, low to moderate pressure, with a smoke height of 350 m was observed from the Babadan Mount Merapi observation post on February 27, 2025 at 05:30 WIB. This week, lava avalanches were observed 53 times in the southwest (upstream of Bebeng River) up to a maximum of 2,000 m, 48 times upstream of Krasak River up to a maximum of 2,000 m, 1 time upstream of Boyong River up to a maximum of 1,600 m, and 82 times in the west (upstream of Sat/Putih River) up to a maximum of 1,800 m. The morphology of the southwest dome was observed and shows slight changes due to lava flow activity. For the central dome, no significant morphological changes were observed. According to the analysis of aerial photos dated February 20, 2025, the volume of the southwest dome is 3,546,200 m3. Meanwhile, the volume of the central dome is measured at 2,360,700 m3.

Seismicity:
This week, the seismicity of Mount Merapi recorded:
291 Multiphase Earthquakes (MP),
912 Avalanche Earthquakes (RF),
11 Tectonic Earthquakes (TT).
The intensity of earthquakes this week is higher than last week.

Deformation
The deformation of Mount Merapi monitored using EDM and GPS this week showed no significant changes.

Rainfall and Lahars
This week, it rained at Mount Merapi observation post with the highest rainfall intensity of 36 mm/hour for 30 minutes at Babadan post on 26 February 2025. There were no reports of additional discharge or lahars in the rivers that originate from Mount Merapi.

Conclusion
Based on the results of visual and instrumental observations, it is concluded that:
The volcanic activity of Mount Merapi is still quite high in the form of effusive eruptions. The activity status is defined at the « SIAGA » level.

OVSICORI-UNA Weekly Volcanic Monitoring Bulletin, February 28, 2025

Latitude: 10.20°N;
Longitude: 84.23°W;
Altitude: 2687 m
Current Activity Level: Warning

A pause in eruptive activity was observed from February 21 to 23. During this period, increases in some seismic patterns were observed: volcano-tectonic activity (2 proximal and 4 distal) and increased tremor amplitude. After that, on February 23, eruptive activity resumed at Boca C with the same type of activity characterized by frequent small explosions detected by acoustic instruments. In this phase of eruptive activity, a greater number of events is recorded, between 5 and 20 events per hour. This activity is accompanied by continuous seismic tremors of moderate amplitude and low frequency.
Geodetic monitoring has recorded an episode of crustal inflation since November 2024 with the most significant from late December to late January. Inflation resumed during the last week and the crater continues to widen.

The MultiGAS station recorded similar gas ratios to the previous week with SO2/CO2 of 1.1 ± 0.3 and H2S/SO2 of 0.04 ± 0.0.3. The SO2 concentrations measured at the Visitors Observatory this week reached very high values (maximum of 27 ppm on February 25) this week. The SO2 flux decreased slightly this week (333 ± 175 t/d), compared to the previous week (487 ± 97 t/d). However, this SO2 flux is high. The OMI instruments on the SENTINEL satellite continue to detect SO2 in the atmosphere with variable but high values, higher than those of 2024.

The level of the hyperacid lake has decreased by about 0.4 m in 1 week. The directly measured lake temperature is 67°C this week. The chemistry of the hyperacid lake waters continues with a composition dominated by halogens, primarily the chloride ion, and by the precipitation of sulfate minerals such as gypsum. This composition has been observed from 2020 to the present, following the extrusion of magma in 2017. This week, the lake is experiencing its highest temperature and acidity of 2025: 67 degrees Celsius and a negative pH (below zero) due to a significant reduction in the volume of the hydrothermal system.
