Iceland , Reykjanes Peninsula :
Land is rising faster near Svartsengi
The land around the Svartsengi power plant is rising much faster than it did before the earthquake swarm that started on November 10, or about 5.5 times faster. The magma inflow is also about ten times faster.
This is what volcanologist Þorvald Þórðarson said to mbl.is today.
“The flow of magma into this storage chamber, which is at a depth of 4.5 kilometres, is 8 to 10 times higher than what people were talking about before November 10. Then it was about 5 to 7 cubic metres per second, but now it is about 50 cubic metres per second,” Þórðarson says.
A deformation was formed following the events of November 10, when the magma ran beneath Grindavíkurvegur road and east beneath Sundhnúkar crater row.
“The country is rising much faster now. This happens simultaneously because the magma is creating space and thus raising the surface of the earth,” Þórðarson says.
“What happens then, it’s hard to tell. We might get an eruption, we might have a re-run of the activitites that happened on November 10 or just something completely new.”
Are the chances of a volcanic eruption in this area increasing?
“I think the likelihood of an eruption in the northern part of the Sundhnúkar crater row or in Illahraun lava increasing every day. I think the likelihood of an eruption there is increasing because of the land rise in that area.”
Þórðarson believes it is important to consider preventive measures when considering this new reality that is facing this area.
“We’re in a new and a changed situation and we’ve entered a new the eruption phase, and so it’s very constructive for us to think about what kind of preventive measures we can take.

Hawaii , Kilauea :
Saturday, November 18, 2023, 9:10 AM HST (Saturday, November 18, 2023, 19:10 UTC)
19°25’16 » N 155°17’13 » W,
Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Activity Summary:
Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. The unrest associated with the intrusion that began in early October, southwest of Kīlauea’s summit continues. Seismic activity immediately south of Kīlauea’s caldera, which has been elevated over the last week, continues at low levels. Field observations of SO2 gas emissions collected yesterday are the same as field observations in October. Unrest may continue to wax and wane with changes to the input of magma into the area and eruptive activity could occur in the near future with little or no warning. No unusual activity has been noted along Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone.
Summit Observations:
Following a seismic swarm that began on Friday, November 10th, south of Halema’uma’u crater, seismicity continues at low rates. Three earthquakes were observed in the main caldera in the past 24 hours.
Neither the Uēkahuna summit tiltmeter, located northwest of the caldera, nor the Sand Hill tiltmeter, located southwest of the caldera, have exhibited observable deformation in the last 24 hours. However, overall, the summit of Kīlauea remains at a high level of inflation, above the level reached prior to the most recent eruption in September 2023.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rates remain low. Field observations found SO2 gas emmision of 100 tonnes per day on November 17th. This is the same as an observation in October 2023.
There is currently no sign of an imminent eruption, but eruptive activity is possible in the coming weeks or months. Increased inflation and earthquake activity (heightened unrest) are expected to precede an eruption. The onsets of previous summit eruptions have been marked by strong swarms of earthquakes caused by the emplacement of a dike 1-2 hours before eruptions.

Mexico , Popocatepetl :
November 19, 11:00 a.m. (November 19, 5:00 p.m. GMT)
Activity from the last 24 hours
54 exhalations were detected, accompanied by emissions of volcanic gases and sometimes ash. Additionally, 979 minutes of tremors were recorded, with low to very low amplitude high frequency segments totaling 16.31 hours.
The National Center for Communications and Civil Protection Operations (Cenacom) reported yesterday a light ash fall in the municipalities of Tlalmanalco, Tenango del Aire, Ayapango state in Mexico and in Tetela del Volcán and Hueyapan belonging to Morelos.
Since this morning and at the time of this report, we have observed a constant emission of water vapor, volcanic gases and ash, which is dispersing towards the South-West (SW).
The Popocatépetl volcanic warning fire is in yellow phase 2.
The scenarios planned for this phase are:
A few small to moderate explosions
Appearance of tremors of variable amplitude
