Italy / Sicily , Etna :

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from February 06, 2023 to February 12, 2023. (issue date 14 February 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Degassing of the summit craters, in particular continuous degassing of the Bocca Nuova crater and the Southeast crater.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Absence of seismic activity of fracturing with Ml>=2.0; stationarity of volcanic tremor parameters.
3) INFRASOUND: Low activity related to infrasonic events.
4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: Ground deformation monitoring networks have not measured any significant changes over the past week
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at an average level.
The soil CO2 flux values recorded last week are medium to low values.
The partial pressure of CO2 dissolved in groundwater (EtnaAcque Network) does not show any variations apart from the seasonal variability of the site.
There are no updates on helium isotopic composition data.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: Thermal activity observed by satellite was generally moderate to weak.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week, the monitoring of Etna’s activity was carried out through the network of surveillance cameras of the INGV – Osservatorio Etneo.
The week was characterized by the continuous emission of gas from the Bocca Nuova craters and the Southeast crater, the latter sporadically emitting a modest amount of red ash.
The preliminary estimate of the area covered by the lava flows, from November 27, 2022 to February 6, 2023 is equal to 9.6 x 10^5 m^2 and the total volume is between 4.8 and 6.1 x10 ^ 6 m^3.

Volcanic tremor:
In the week of February 6 to 12, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor remained at a globally average level. Due to unfavorable weather conditions, station ESLN had no acquisitions for most of the week, therefore the time series of the signal recorded at station ESPC is shown, also missing signal at some time intervals. time.
For the same reason also the location of the volcanic tremor, in the second part of the week, is not available. However, at the time when it was possible to make an assessment, the locations of the sources of the tremor were located in the area of the Bocca Nuova and Southeast craters at an altitude between 1800 and 2500 m above from mean sea level.

Indonesia , Bromo :

PVMBG sent a team of scientists to investigate Tengger Caldera’s Bromo cone after an increase in activity was detected on 3 February, characterized by crater incandescence, rumbling sounds, and a strong sulfur dioxide odor. They observed somewhat dense white emissions rising as high as 300 m during 9-12 February and heard moderate-to-strong rumbling noises. A sulfur dioxide odor was strong near the crater and measurements indicated that levels were above the healthy (non-hazardous) threshold of 5 parts per million; differential optical absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) measurements indicated an average flux of 190 tons per day on 11 February.

During clear periods the largest solfatara on the NNW part of the crater floor was visible and ranged in temperature from 46 to 66 degrees Celsius based on handheld instruments. Crater incandescence, originating from the solfatara, was visible at night. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4), and visitors were warned to stay outside of a 1-km radius of the crater.

Indonesia , Tangkuban Parahu :

PVMBG issued a special report based on recent observations of Tangkuban Parahu. Webcam images captured from 18h30 on 9 February to 03h00 on 10 February showed incandescence emanating from Ecoma Crater. A team of PVMBG scientists inspected the crater during 19h00-20h00 on 10 February to identify the source of the incandescence. They observed intense emissions rising from Ecoma Crater, heard roaring and rumbling, and detected a strong sulfur odor, but did not see incandescence. Remote measurements of solfatara temperatures in Ecoma Crater using thermal cameras show varying temperatures, with a maximum of 105 degrees Celsius, and were influenced by airflow conditions at the crater. A multi-gas detector did not record high concentrations of volcanic gases. Seismic data from June 2022 to February 2023 suggested variable rates of fluid movement and increased heating of the subsurface to the surface. Data from monitoring instruments and visual observations indicated that the incandescent was not caused by rising magma and instead by reactions of sulfur deposits around the vents; the Alert Level remained at 1 (on a scale of 1-4) and tourists were advised to avoid descending into the craters.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) reported that a hot spot appeared in the crater of Mount Tangkuban Perahu, recorded on CCTV cameras, last Thursday, February 9, 2023.
According to the short and accelerated recording, before the onset of the incandescence, only a puff of smoke was visible at this location, a puff of smoke had been observed since 5:00 p.m. WIB.

A few moments later, around 6:35 p.m., points of incandescence appeared near the smoke. According to the written statement of the PVMBG, the results of the inspection which was carried out for two days, namely February 10 and 11, 2023, no more fire points were found in the Ecoma crater of Mount Tangkuban Parahu .

« Results of an inspection of Ecoma crater that was conducted on February 10, 2023 between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. WIB showed no hotspots/incandescence associated with magma migration to the surface, » said the acting chief of Geological Agency M Wafid, Monday (13/2)

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 30, 2023 to February 05, 2023. (issue date 07 February 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Effusive activity with lava flows in the Vallée del Léon, variable rate degassing of the summit craters associated with modest and sporadic emissions of ash from the Southeast crater.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Increase in the rate of occurrence of fracturing earthquakes and energy releases. Stationarity of volcanic tremor parameters.
3) INFRASOUND: Moderate to high infrasound activity with sources located in the Southeast Crater and Bocca Nuova areas.
4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: Ground deformation monitoring networks have not measured any significant changes over the past week

Shaded model of the relief of the summit craters of Etna obtained by processing drone images acquired during several overflights (September 15 and 21, 2022, October 6, 21 and 23), superimposed on the shaded model from the Pléiades images of August 22, 2020 ( AO Telerivamento). CSE = Southeast Crater, CNE = Northeast Crater, BN = Bocca Nuova, VOR = Voragine. The red polygon delimits the area of current effusive activity.

The data of the isotopic composition of helium from the last sampling (03-02-2023) do not show significant changes compared to the previous ones, reaching a high level.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit zone was of a high level in correspondence with the effusive eruption in the summit zone. However, since the evening of February 5, only low heat flux values have been recorded, signaling an interruption in effusive activity.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week, the monitoring of Etna’s activity was carried out through the network of surveillance cameras of the INGV – Osservatorio Etneo.
During the week in question, the modest effusive activity, which began on November 27, 2022, continued from the mouth that opened at the northeast base of the Southeast crater at an altitude of ‘about 2800 m, which was however characterized by large fluctuations. This activity produces the thrust of lava flows in the Valle del Leone area and on the west wall of Valle del Bove.
In particular, from the early hours of the morning of February 1, the lava flow underwent a sudden increase, to then gradually decrease during the night between February 1 and 2 until it stopped completely in the early morning hours of 2 . The flow regained strength in the early afternoon of February 2 producing new overlays of lava flows over the pre-existing lava field. From the afternoon of February 4 and into the night of February 4-5, the flow shows a gradual decrease and the lava field appears to be cooling.
During the week under examination, the most advanced fronts of the lava field remain confined to an altitude between approximately 2590 and 2030 m. and, in particular, at an altitude of 2590 m on February 03. The total area covered by lava flows from November 27, 2022 until February 03, 2023 is equal to 9.6 x 10^5 m^2 while the total volume is between 4.8 and 6.1 x10^6m^3. This estimate is preliminary and an error of approximately 40% is estimated.

The activity of the summit craters was characterized almost exclusively by degassing at a variable rate, mainly to the detriment of the crater of Bocca Nuova (BN) where the intense impulsive degassing that has characterized it for months continued.
The Southeast crater (SEC) rather presents a degassing of variable intensity, fed mainly by the fumaroles located along the edge of the crater, inside the niche formed by the collapse of the flank of February 10, 2022 and by the May-June 2022 eruptive vent, which featured frequent lightning visible at night, rarely accompanied by thermal anomalies, as well as modest emissions of dilute ash rapidly dispersed in the summit area by high-altitude winds.
Finally, with regard to the Voragine crater (VOR) and the Northeast crater (NEC), only weak degassing activity is observed from the surveillance cameras.

Statement on the volcanic activity of Etna, February 07, 2023, 7:36:16.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, communicates that the effusive activity that began on November 27, 2022, from the afternoon of February 4, showed a gradual decrease and is currently no longer fed. The lava field in the Valle del Leone area and on the west wall of Valle del Bove appears to be cooling. At present, the Southeast crater shows fumarolic degassing of varying intensity accompanied by frequent eruptions visible during the night, rarely associated with thermal anomalies and modest emissions of dilute ash rapidly dispersed in the summit area by high altitude winds.
From a seismic point of view, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor is at a globally medium-low level. The source of the volcanic tremor is located in correspondence with the summit craters at an altitude of about 2600 m above sea level. Infrasonic activity is weak.
Regarding the deformations of the soil of the volcanic edifice, the data from the GNSS and inclinometer networks do not show any significant changes to report in recent days.

East Epi sub-marine volcano activity update issued by VMGD

Early this morning, reports and observations from locals at Epi indicate an increase in the activity of the East Epi sub-marine volcano at around 7:48am with steam over the sub-marine volcano area. There is also reports of Sulphur dioxide followed by phreatic explosions propelling ash some 100 meters high.
People on Epi, Tongoa and the surrounding islands are advised to stay clear of the coast as phreatic explosions may continue and could generate small waves.
Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department will continue to monitor the volcano activity and update when more information become available.

The volcano alert level of East Epi sub-marine volcano is increased to Volcano Alert Level 1.

Due to ongoing volcanic activity at East Epi sub-marine volcano with phreatic explosions, light degassing and emissions of ash, the danger zone is at 10km radius around the East Epi sub-marine volcano. Latest observations confirmed that the volcanic cone is building up with the continuous ash emissions.
Aviation and Mariners are advised that with the ongoing sub-marine volcano activity, the danger zone is along the East side of Epi island.
People on Epi and surrounding islands are also advised to stay on alert for any large earthquake associated with the ongoing volcanic eruptions that could trigger a possible tsunami.

A large caldera, with submarine post-caldera cones active in historical time, lies off the eastern coast of Epi Island. Epi Island itself, located slightly west of the main New Hebrides volcanic arc, largely consists of two Quaternary volcanoes, Mount Allombei on the west and Pomare (Tavani Kutali) on the east. Tavani Ruro, which forms an elongated eastern extension of Epi Island across a narrow isthmus, is related to Kuwae caldera to the east. Pomare volcano is the highest point on the island and has three well-preserved subsidiary cones to the east with youthful summit craters.

Pomare volcano is truncated on its eastern side by the largely submarine East Epi caldera, which has been the source of all historical eruptions. Three small submarine basaltic and dacitic cones, known as Epi A, Epi B, and Epi C, are located along the northern rim of the breached caldera. Ephemeral islands were formed during eruptions in 1920 and 1953, and the summit of the shallowest cone, Epi B, was at 34 m below sea level at the time of a 2001 survey.

The total hourly frequency oscillated between low values (5 events/h ) and average (12 events/h). The intensity of the explosions was mainly medium and low in the North crater area and medium in the South Center crater area.
2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters do not show significant variations.
3) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: The ground deformation monitoring networks did not show any significant variations.
4) GEOCHEMISTRY: The flow of SO2 at an average level
CO2 flux in the crater area: stable on average values
CO2/SO2 ratio on high values.
Isotope ratio of helium in groundwater: there are no updates, the last figure dated 20-12-22 on medium-high values.
5) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed from the satellite was generally weak.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the observation period, the eruptive activity of Stromboli was characterized by the analysis of the images recorded by the surveillance cameras of the INGV-OE at an altitude of 190 m (SCT-SCV), Punta dei Corvi, while 400m and Pizzo cameras are not currently available. The explosive activity was mainly produced by 4 (four) eruptive vents located in the North zone of the crater and by two vents located in the Center-South zone.
Due to a technical failure, from 19:58 UTC on January 20, 2023 to 11:05 UTC on January 25, 2023, camera images were not available for analysis of eruptive activity.
On January 24, 2023, a lava overflow affected the vents located in the northern area of the crater.

Observations of explosive activity captured by surveillance cameras
In the area of the North crater (N) the four mouths of the two sectors N1 and N2 were characterized by an explosive activity of variable intensity from low (less than 80 m in height) to medium (less than 150 m in height) with emission of crude material (bombs and lapilli)). A sometimes intense projection activity was observed throughout the observation period from the vents located in the N2 sector. The average frequency of explosions varied from 4 to 6 events/h.

In the Center-South zone (CS) an explosive activity of medium intensity was observed (the products did not exceed 150 in height) emitting coarse materials mixed with fine materials (ash). The frequency varied from less than 1 to 7 events/h. It should be noted that until January 27, the frequency was 6-7 events/h, then, in the following two days, it decreased to less than 1 event/h.

January 24, 2023 lava overflow.
At 14:19 UTC on January 24, preceded by intense spattering activity from the mouths of the N2 sector, the northern sector of the crater area was affected by the appearance of an overflow of lava which began to flow abundantly in the upper part of the Fire Sciara. On the morning of January 25, 2023, the lava flow was cooling.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 23, 2023 to January 29, 2023. (issue date January 31, 2023).

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:

1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Effusive activity with lava flows in the Valley del Leone, variable rate degassing of the summit craters associated with modest and sporadic ash emissions from the Southeast crater.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Very weak seismic activity of fracturing; average amplitude of the volcanic tremor in the average level.
3) INFRASOUND: Weak infrasonic activity.

Map of the lava field updated on January 29, 2023 and made by analyzing Landat 8-9 satellite images from January 23 and Sentinel 2 from January 27 and 29. The background image is the shaded model of the relief of the summit area of Etna, obtained by processing drone images acquired during several overflights (September 15 and 21, 2022, October 6, 21 and 23), superimposed on the shaded model derived from Pléiades images of August 22, 2020 (AO Remote Sensing). CSE = South Crater

4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: The ground deformation monitoring networks did not measure any significant variations during the last week.
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at an average level
The soil CO2 flux values recorded last week are medium to low values.
The CO2 in groundwater (EtnaAcque Network) does not show variations apart from the seasonal variability of the site.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit zone was of a high level in correspondence with the effusive eruption in the summit zone.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week, monitoring of Etna’s activity was carried out through the surveillance cameras of the INGV – Osservatorio Etneo.
During the week in question, modest effusive activity continued, with no substantial changes from the previous week, which began on November 27, 2022, from the vent that opened at Base Nord- East of the Southeast crater at an altitude of about 2800 m which produces the overlap of lava flows in the Valle del Leone area and on the west wall of Valle del Bove. The development of the lava field in the interval January 16-23 is shown in Fig. 1.

During the week under review, the most advanced fronts of the lava field remain confined to an altitude between approximately 2450 and 2050 m and, in particular, at an altitude of 2450 m on January 29. The area covered from November 27, 2022 to January 29, 2023 is equal to 8.8 x 10^5 m2 and the total volume is between 4.4 and 5.6 x10^6 m3. This estimate is preliminary and an error of approximately 40% is estimated.

Summit crater activity was characterized by variable rate degassing, primarily affecting the Bocca Nuova crater where intense impulsive degassing continued; while the degassing of the Northeast Crater and the Voragine crater remained, on the other hand, extremely mild.
The Southeast crater was characterized by fumarolic degassing, mainly located along the crater rim, and by May-June 2022 eruptive degassing that occasionally showed nocturnal eruptions. This vent was affected by modest dilute ash emissions that high altitude winds quickly dispersed to the summit area.

Special Report on Volcanic Activity (REAV), Antofagasta Region, Láscar Volcano, January 31, 2023, 3:00 p.m. local time (mainland Chile)

The National Geology and Mining Service of Chile (Sernageomin) announces the following information obtained through the monitoring equipment of the National Volcanic Monitoring Network (RNVV), processed and analyzed at the Observatory of Volcanoes of the Southern Andes (Ovdas ):

On Tuesday January 31, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. (6:00 p.m. UTC) we inform of the appearance of a dome-type effusive body inside the crater of the Lascar volcano, with a diameter of 81 m (minimum measurement) and 93 m (maximum measurement) with an area of 5332 m2, detected from a Skysat Collect image.

Seismic activity:
Over the past 24 hours, the seismic record from Lascar Volcano continues its downward trend, both in quantity and magnitude. However, during the last days, the seismicity of the fluids presents characteristics in their signals with monochromatic trends in their frequencies, while the appearance of the Tornillo type seismicity on January 30 is associated with the interaction with the clogging at the within the system.

Exposure / Specific risk
The potential impacts associated with the presence of a lava dome inside the active crater derive from its possible total or partial destruction, by an event with explosive characteristics. In this scenario, the occurrence of pyroclastic flows and ballistic pyroclastic ejections in the current area is expected.

Hazards
The assignment by ash fall outside the zoning radius is not excluded, which could occur, preferentially, in the West.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 16, 2023 to January 22, 2023. (issue date 24 January 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY
In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: During this period, normal Strombolian activity was observed with spattering activity and lava overflow in the North Crater area. The total hourly frequency oscillated between low (3 events/h) and medium-low (9 events/h) values. The intensity of the explosions was mainly medium and low in the North crater area and medium to high in the South Center crater area.
2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters do not show significant variations.
3) SOIL DEFORMATIONS: The island’s soil deformation monitoring networks have not shown any significant variations over the past week.
4) GEOCHEMISTRY: The flow of SO2 at an average level
CO2 flux in the crater area: stable on medium-high values.
CO2/SO2 ratio on average values.
Isotope ratio of helium in groundwater: there are no updates, the last figure dated 20-12-22 on medium-high values.
5) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed from the satellite was generally weak. High heat flux values were observed on January 17, 2023 in correspondence with the lava overflow in the summit area.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
The explosive activity was mainly produced by 4 (four) eruptive vents located in the northern zone of the crater and by one located in the central southern zone. The mouths of the North crater area are located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco while the mouth of the central South crater area is located inside the crater terrace. In detail, in the northern area of the crater, a vent is located near sector N1 while the other three are located near sector N2. Due to a technical failure, as of 19:58 UTC on January 20, 2023, camera images were no longer available for analysis of eruptive activity.
On January 17, 2023, a lava overflow affected the vents located in the northern area of the crater.

Observations of explosive activity captured by surveillance cameras:
In the northern area of the crater (N), explosive activity was observed only from the vents located inside the Sciara del Fuoco in its upper part after the collapse of the northern rim. The four vents showed explosive activity (explosions of varying intensity from low (less than 80 m in height) to medium (less than 150 m in height) emitting coarse materials (bombs and lapilli)). In addition, spattering activity was observed throughout the observation period from vents located in the N2 sector. The average frequency of explosions fluctuates between 3 and 6 events/h.
In the Center-South (CS) zone, explosive activity of medium and high intensity was observed (sometimes the products exceeded 250 in height) emitting fine materials (ash) mixed with coarse materials. The frequency was variable between 2 and 5 events/h.

Lava overflow of January 17, 2023.
At 09:52 UTC, after intense spattering activity from the vents of the N2 sector of the North zone, an overflow of lava began, which began to flow abundantly in the upper part of the Sciara del fuoco, splitting into two flows main lines, one in the direction of the ravine created on October 9, 2022 and the other longitudinally to the point of emission. In the afternoon, the lava flows appeared decreasing and at 6:00 p.m. cooling.

Statement on Stromboli activity, January 24, 2023, 16:57 (15:57 UTC).

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, communicates that from the analysis of the surveillance cameras, it is observed that an overflow of lava is in progress from the area of the North crater, which began towards 2:20 p.m. UTC. At 2:22 p.m. there was also a slide of unstable material, which reached the sea at the base of the Sciara del Fuoco. The lava overflow is still ongoing. From the seismic point of view, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor remains within the range of average values. At 2:19 p.m. UTC there was a seismic signal linked to block rolling phenomena for about 6 minutes. There are no significant variations in the occurrence rate and amplitude of explosive earthquakes. Data from soil deformation monitoring networks show no significant variations.

Further updates will be communicated soon.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 16, 2023 to January 22, 2023. (issue date 24 January 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY
In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:

1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Effusive activity with lava flows in the Vallée del Leone, degassing at variable speed from the summit craters.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Low seismic activity due to fracturing; the amplitude of the volcanic tremor remained mainly at medium-low levels.
3) INFRASOUND: Weak infrasonic activity.
4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: During the last week, the ground deformation monitoring networks have not recorded any significant variations.
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at a moderately medium-low level
The soil CO2 flux values recorded last week are average values.
The CO2 in groundwater (EtnaAcque Network) does not show variations apart from the seasonal variability of the site.

6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit zone was of a high level in correspondence with the effusive eruption in the summit zone.
7) OTHER OBSERVATIONS: The magma which fed the current eruption during the first twenty days of activity has the most evolved composition among those of the Southeast Crater in 2022.
There is therefore no evidence of significant upwelling of new, deep, primitive magma into the magmatic « reservoir » (reservoir) that feeds the ongoing activity.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS:
During the week under review, the effusive activity which began on November 27, 2022 from the mouth which opened at the North-East base of the South-East crater at an altitude of approximately 2800 m is continued, although with strong fluctuations. During the night of January 16 to 17, the lava emission gradually decreased and had practically ceased by the late afternoon of the 17th. In the early hours of January 18, effusive activity resumed, generating two lava flows , one directed to the northeast, along the western margin of the lava field, and the other to the east, on the steep western wall of the Valle del Bove. The most advanced fronts remained confined to an altitude between approximately 2500 and 2400 m and, in particular, at an altitude of 2450 m on 19 January. The latter reached the base of the wall on January 20.

The next day, the effusive rate decreased again to increase again in the evening; on the evening of January 22, a new flow descended towards the Valle del Bove and approached the base of its western wall, around 2200-2250 m altitude.
The area covered from November 27, 2022 to January 19, 2023 is equal to 7.5 x 10^5 m2 and the total volume is between 3.7 and 4.8 x10^6 m^3. This estimate is preliminary and an error of approximately 40% is estimated.
The activity of the summit craters was characterized by degassing at a variable level, mainly to the detriment of the Bocca Nuova crater where the degassing continued identically to the previous weeks; however, no nightglow was observed at this crater. At the Southeast crater, the fumarolic degassing was mainly located along the rim of the crater and in correspondence with the eruptive vent of May-June 2022. The degassing of the Northeast crater and the Voragine crater, on the contrary, remained extremely mild, being visible only in conditions of atmospheric humidity.

Statement on Stromboli activity, January 17, 2023, 11:20 (10:20 UTC).

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etna Observatory, communicates that from 09:51 UTC, surveillance cameras observed an overflow of lava from the northern area of the crater. The lava flow front is located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco. The phenomenon is still ongoing.
From a seismic point of view, from about 09:31 UTC, a moderate increase in the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor was observed, in the band of average values. There are no significant variations in the occurrence rate and amplitude of explosive earthquakes.
The signals from the GNSS stations and clinometers do not show any significant variations.

Further updates will be communicated soon.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 09, 2023 to January 15, 2023, (issue date January 17, 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY
In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Normal Strombolian activity with intense spatter activity from the North Crater area. The total hourly frequency fluctuated between medium-low (7 events/h) and medium (11 events/h) values. The intensity of the explosions was mainly medium and low in the North crater area and medium and high in the South Center crater area.
2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters do not show significant variations.
3) SOIL DEFORMATIONS: The island’s soil deformation monitoring networks did not show any significant variation to report for the period considered.
4) GEOCHEMISTRY: The flow of SO2 at an average level
CO2 fluxes in the crater area show a downward trend while remaining on medium-high values.
CO2/SO2 ratio: there are no updates; the latest data indicated mean values equal to 10.1.
Isotope ratio of helium in groundwater: decreasing but still on medium to high values (4.32).
5) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed from the satellite was generally weak.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the observation period, the eruptive activity of Stromboli was characterized by the analysis of the images recorded by the surveillance cameras INGV-OE at 190 m (SCT-SCV), Punta dei Corvi and Pizzo, while the 400m camera is currently unavailable due to video signal acquisition issues caused by damage to the fiber optic connection between Punta Labronzo and AOC due to severe weather that hit the island on August 12, 2022. The explosive activity was produced, mainly, from 4 (four) eruptive vents located in the North (N) crater zone and one located in the Center-South (CS) zone. The vents of the North crater zone are located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco while the mouth of the Center-South crater zone is located inside the crater terrace. In detail, in the northern area of the crater, a vent is located near sector N1 and three located near sector N2.
Due to the unfavorable weather conditions of January 10 and 12, 2023, the visibility of the active areas of Stromboli was not sufficient for a correct description of the eruptive activity.

Observations of explosive activity captured by surveillance cameras
In the northern area of the crater (N), explosive activity was only observed from the vents located inside the Sciara del Fuoco, in its upper part, after the collapse of the northern edge. The four vents showed explosive activity (explosions of varying intensity from weak (less than 80 m in height) to strong (more than 150 m in height) emitting coarse materials (bombs and lapilli)). In addition, intense projection activity was observed on January 11 and 13, 2023 from the vent located near sector N1.
The average frequency of explosions varied from 2 to 6 events/h.
In the Center-South (CS) zone, explosive activity of medium and high intensity was observed (sometimes the products exceeded 250 in height) emitting fine materials (ash) mixed with coarse materials. The frequency varied between 2 and 5 events/h.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 09, 2023 to January 15, 2023, (issue date January 17, 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY
In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:

1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Effusive activity with lava flows in the Vallée del Leone, degassing at variable speed from the summit craters.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Low seismic activity due to fracturing; average amplitude of the volcanic tremor on a medium or low-medium level.
3) INFRASOUND: Low activity related to infrasonic events.

4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: During the last week, the ground deformation monitoring networks have not recorded any significant variations.
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at a moderately medium-low level The soil CO2 flux values recorded last week are average values.
The CO2 of the water table (EtnaAcque Network) presents variations which are part of the seasonal variability of the site.
Helium data from the latest sampling shows no significant changes from the previous ones, settling on the high level.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit zone was of a high level in correspondence with the effusive eruption in the summit zone.

During the period studied, the effusive activity that began on November 27, 2022 from the active effusive vent at the northeast base of the Southeast crater continued, at an altitude of approximately 2800 m . Compared to previous weeks, no significant changes were observed from the cameras, effusive activity continued to show variable feeding, resulting in new lava flows that overlaid previous ones. In general, the morphology of the lava field, observable by surveillance cameras, remained unchanged and the lava flows continued to expand in the Valle del Leone and in the upper Valle del Bove, with the most advanced fronts confined to an altitude between about 2400 -2200 m altitude and, in particular, at an altitude of 2250 m i January 14 .

Map of the lava field updated to January 14, 2023, made by analyzing Sentinel satellite imagery from January 14. CSE = Southeast Crater

The area covered from November 27, 2022 to January 14, 2023 is equal to 7 x 10^5 m2 and the total volume is between 3.5 and 4.5 x 10^6 m3. This estimate is preliminary and an error of approximately 40% is estimated.

During the week of observation, the summit craters were characterized by a variable rate degassing, mainly to the detriment of the Bocca Nuova crater which continued to feed a continuous, sometimes pulsating degassing. The Southeast crater produced localized fumarolic degassing along the rim of the crater. Slight fumarolic degassing from the Northeast crater and very modest fumarolic degassing from the Voragine crater.

Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Activity Summary:
The summit eruption of Kīlauea Volcano, within Halemaʻumaʻu crater, continued over the past 24 hours. All recent eruptive activity has been confined to the crater. No significant changes have been observed at the summit or in either rift zone.

Halemaʻumaʻu Lava Lake Observations:
Eruption of lava in the eastern portion of Halemaʻumaʻu crater floor continued over the past 24 hours. Activity is concentrated in a large lava lake in the eastern half of the crater, as well as a smaller area of lava within the basin in the western half of the crater that was the focus of activity in 2021–2022. The active lava lake in the eastern half of the crater has one dominant fountain, measured at 6-7 yards (meters) high. The eastern lava lake had an area of approximately 30 acres (12 hectares) on January 10, and the surface area has fluctuated slightly over the past 24 hours with several small overflows from the perched lake.

Summit Observations:
Summit tiltmeters showed deflationary tilt over most of the past day, with the onset of inflationary tilt this morning. Volcanic tremor remains above background levels. A sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rate of approximately 3,500 tonnes per day (t/d) was measured on January 9, 2023.

Rift Zone Observations:
No unusual activity has been noted along the East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone; low rates of ground deformation and seismicity continue along both. Measurements from continuous gas monitoring stations downwind of Puʻuʻōʻō in the middle East Rift Zone have been below detection limits for SO2, indicating that SO2 emissions from Puʻuʻōʻō are negligible.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 02, 2023 to January 08, 2023. (issue date 10 January 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Effusive activity with lava flows in Valle del Leone and Valle del Bove, variable rate degassing at the summit craters.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Low seismic activity linked to fracturing processes. The average amplitude of the volcanic tremor was set at medium or medium-low levels; the centroids of the sources are located, until January 5, between the effusive vent and the Southeast crater and thereafter to the Northwest of the latter.
3) INFRASOUND: Low activity related to infrasound events; the springs were located in the area of the Bocca Nuova crater.
4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: During the last week, the ground deformation monitoring networks have not recorded any significant variations.

5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at a medium-low level.
The soil CO2 flux values recorded last week are average values.
The CO2 of the water table (EtnaAcque Network) presents variations which are part of the seasonal variability of the site. Helium isotopes (sampling): there are no updates.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit zone was of a high level in correspondence with the effusive eruption in the summit zone.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week of observation, monitoring of Etna’s volcanic activity was carried out through the analysis of images from the network of INGV surveillance cameras, Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) and at through some observations made by volcanological guides and reliable external sources.

During the observation period, the effusive activity that began on November 27, 2022 from the vent that opened at the northeast base of the Southeast crater at an altitude of approximately 2800 m is continued. The activity had, as already described in the previous weeks, a variable effusive regime and continued to form a lava field characterized by the overlapping of different lava flows with an expansion in the Valle del Leone and the Valle del Bove. From the analysis of ESA Sentinel Hub images from January 2, 4 and 7, it was possible to determine that the most advanced lava front is at an altitude of approximately 2170 m. As of January 7, 2023, the preliminary estimate of the area of the lava field is approximately 6.3 x 10^5 m^2 while that of the total volume is approximately 2.5 – 4.3 x 10^ 6 m^3 (estimated error is about 40%) .

Observations during inspections also found that the lava field is very complex and frayed with the formation of hornitos and tunnels.
Finally, with regard to the summit craters, the activity was characterized by a variable rate degassing mainly by the Bocca Nuova

The red cracks that emanate from the fountain, giving the appearance of a spider’s web, indicate that lava is moving radially away from the fountain in all directions.

Summit Observations:
Over the past 24 hours, summit tiltmeters recorded deflation until early this morning, and are now recording inflation. Volcanic tremor remains above background levels. A sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rate of approximately 3,500 tonnes per day (t/d) was measured yesterday, January 9, 2023.

Rift Zone Observations:
No unusual activity has been noted along the East Rift Zone or Southwest Rift Zone; low rates of ground deformation and seismicity continue along both. Measurements from continuous gas monitoring stations downwind of Puʻuʻōʻō in the middle East Rift Zone remain below detection limits for SO2, indicating that SO2 emissions from Puʻuʻōʻō are negligible.

Italy , Stromboli :

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from January 02, 2023 to January 08, 2023. (issue date 10 January 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:

1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: During this period, normal Strombolian activity was observed with intense spattering activity accompanied by two lava overflows at the level of the North crater area. The total hourly frequency oscillated between low (5 winds/h) and medium-low (9 events/h) values.
The intensity of the explosions was mainly medium to low in the area of the North crater and medium and high in the area of the Center-South crater.
2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters do not show significant variations.
3) SOIL DEFORMATIONS: The island’s soil deformation monitoring networks did not show any significant variation to report for the period considered.
4) GEOCHEMISTRY: The flow of SO2 at an average level.
CO2 flux in the crater area: there are no updates; the latest measurements from 10.12.2022 show a downward trend while remaining on medium-high values.
CO2/SO2 ratio: the CO2/SO2 ratio displays medium-high values, equal to 13.82 (data validated on 08.01.2023).
Isotope ratio of dissolved Helium in heat sinks: there are no updates.
5) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed from the satellite was generally weak. High heat flux values were observed on January 3, 2023 in correspondence with the lava overflow in the summit area.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS:
The explosive activity was mainly produced by 4 (four) eruptive vents located in the North zone of the crater and by one located in the Center-South zone. The mouths of the North crater zone are located in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco while the mouth of the Center-South zone is located inside the crater terrace.
On January 2 and 4, 2023, two lava overflows were emitted from the North Zone vents extending into the central-upper part of the Sciara del fuoco.

Observations of explosive activity captured by surveillance cameras
In the northern area of the crater (N), explosive and effusive activity was observed only from the vents located inside the Sciara del Fuoco in its upper part after the collapse of the northern rim. The four vents showed explosive activity (explosions of varying intensity from weak (less than 80 m high) to strong (more than 150 m high) emitting coarse materials (bombs and lapilli)) and effusive (lava flow which reached the middle part of the Sciara). In addition, intense spattering activity was observed throughout the period both from the vent located near sector N1 and from those located near sector N2. The average frequency of explosions varied from 3 to 8 events/h. In the Center-South (CS) zone, explosive activity of medium and high intensity was observed (sometimes the products exceeded 250 in height) emitting fine materials (ash) mixed with coarse materials. The frequency varied between 1 and 4 events/h.

Flows on January 2 and 4, 2023.
On January 02, 2023 starting at 20:36 UTC after intense spattering activity from the northern vents of the crater terrace near sector N2, an overflow of lava occurred which began to flow in the upper middle part of the crater. Sciara, likely channeling into the Canyon produced on October 9, 2022, so not visible to surveillance cameras. The lava flow was weakly fed at the source and after a few hours appeared poorly fed and cooling. On January 04, 2023 from 01:24 UTC after intense spattering activity from the northern vents of the crater terrace near sector N2, an overflow of lava occurred which began to flow in the middle-upper part of the Sciara, probably channeling into the Canyon of October 9, 2022, therefore not visible by surveillance cameras.
The lava flow was well fed at source and after a few hours appeared low fed and cooled.
