Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Activity Summary:
Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. Seismicity in the summit and along the Koa‘e fault system southwest of the summit continues to decrease over the last 24 hours. The intrusion of magma into this area appears to have slowed, and the likelihood of an eruption has decreased.

 Summit Observations:
Seismicity and ground deformation beneath the summit and extending 5-7 miles (8-11 km) southwest of the caldera under the Koa‘e fault zone continues to decrease. Earthquake counts continues to decrease from 5–10 events per hour to 1–7 earthquakes; dispersed widely from the summit to the southwest. Depths remain consistent, 1–4 km (less than a mile–2.5 mi) below the surface and magnitudes range a maximum of 3+ to less than 1. In total, less than 150 earthquakes, down from ~300, have been recorded across this region over the past 24 hours, reflecting the continued decrease in seismicity.

Over the past day, tiltmeters near Sand Hill and Uēkahuna bluff have recorded very little change after the steep deflation of the past 2 days related to magma moving southwest. Sandhill is on a deflationary trend.

Global Positioning System (GPS) instruments have recorded up to 8 inches (20 cm) of horizontal motion at stations around the SWRZ and immediately to the south along the Koa‘e fault zone.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emission rates remain low. Field measurements indicated an SO2 emission rate of approximately 70 tonnes per day, on January 17, which was similar to measurements in October, November, and early December.

Patterns of earthquakes and ground deformation indicate that magma intruded beneath the south end of the caldera beginning on the morning of January 27th. This activity waxed and waned until Wednesday, January 31, when greatly increased seismicity and tilt indicated a dike was being emplaced, triggering episodic felt earthquakes and rockfalls within Halema‘uma‘u. By 5 p.m. HST on January 31st, seismicity migrated southwest of the caldera towards the Ko‘ae fault system and tiltmeters in the south caldera area began to record strong deflation. Modeling of tiltmeter, GPS, and satellite radar interferometry (INSAR) data suggest that magma within the initial dike migrated southwest into the new intrusion as it opened beneath the Ko‘ae fault zone. The overall decrease in seismicity and deformation suggests that this event is waning. However, renewed episodes of activity remain a possibility and an eruption could occur with little advanced warning.

 Rift Zone Observations:
Seismicity in Kīlauea’s upper East Rift Zone and Southwest Rift Zone remained low in the past 24 hours.   No unusual activity has been noted along the middle and lower sections of Kīlauea’s East Rift Zone. We continue to closely monitor both rift zones.

Altitude du sommet : 4091 pieds (1247 m)
Niveau d’alerte volcanique actuel : AVIS
Code couleur aviation actuel : JAUNE

Philippines , Bulusan :

BULUSAN VOLCANO ADVISORY , 28 January 2024 ,09:45 PM

This is a notice of increased seismic activity at Bulusan Volcano.

A total of one hundred twenty-six (126) weak volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes has been recorded by the Bulusan Volcano Network (BVN) since 12AM today, 28 January 2024. These VT earthquakes ranged in strength between ML0.3 to ML2.2 and were generated between 1 to 9 kilometers beneath the north to northwestern flank of the volcano edifice. Degassing activity from the summit crater and active vents generated very-weak to moderate volume plumes that drifted southwest to northwest. Sustained seismic unrest for the past month indicates persistent hydrothermal activity that is likely driven by deep-seated magmatic processes and may lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruption.

The public is reminded that Alert Level 1 prevails over Bulusan Volcano, which means it is currently at sustained low-level unrest with increased chances of steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. Local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) should be prohibited and that vigilance in the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast sector must be exercised due to the possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions. Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft. Furthermore, people living within valleys and along river/stream channels should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall occurring simultaneous with phreatic eruption.

DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano’s condition and any new development will be relayed to all concerned.

19°25’16 » N 155°17’13 » W,
Summit Elevation 4091 ft (1247 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW

Activity Summary:
Kīlauea volcano is not erupting. Over the past day, seismicity picked up in the south caldera region, but has remained steady. Kīlauea summit remains pressurized; in recent months unrest has escalated quickly, and an eruption could occur in the future with little warning.

Summit Observations:
Rates of seismicity in the south caldera area increased yesterday morning, but remained stable through the day. This morning, seismicity is somewhat lower, but a tiltmeter near Sand Hill indicates ongoing inflationary deformation Periods of increased seismicity can be expected to continue during repressurization of the summit magma reservoir, which has been ongoing since the end of the September 2023 eruption.

Kīlauea’s summit region remains at a high level of inflation. Together with the increase in seismicity yesterday morning, a tiltmeter near Sand Hill indicated an increase in inflationary tilt. The tilt rate has remained steady over the past 24 hours (neither increasing nor decreasing). A tiltmeter near Uēkahuna bluff also responded to yesterday’s events, but to a lesser degree, as this instrument is not as sensitive to south caldera changes.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas emission rates remain low. Field measurements indicated an SO2 emission rate of approximately 70 tonnes per day on January 17, which was similar to measurements in October, November, and early December.

La Martinique , Montagne Pelée :

Weekly report, Paris Institute of Globe Physics, Martinique Volcanological and Seismological Observatory. Saint-Pierre, January 26, 2024 at 12:30 p.m. local time (GMT-4)

Volcanic activity remains low with 1 earthquake of volcanic origin observed this week.
Between January 19, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. (UT) and January 26, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. (UT), the OVSM recorded 1 low-energy deep hybrid earthquake. This earthquake was located approximately 30 km deep southwest of the volcano.
Hybrid type seismic signals contain low frequencies and are associated with the presence of magmatic fluids in the depths of the Montagne Pelée volcanic system.

This earthquake was not felt by the population.
The previous week, the OVSM had recorded 1 earthquake of volcanic origin. As of January 26, 2024 and during the last 4 weeks, the OVSM has therefore observed a total of 10 volcanic earthquakes, or an average of 2 to 3 earthquakes per week.
During phases of volcanic reactivation of volcanoes similar to Montagne Pelée, it is usual to observe seismic activity varying in intensity and frequency.

The alert level is currently YELLOW: vigilance.

Philippines , Bulusan :

AVIS D’ACTIVITE DU VOLCAN BULUSAN, 28 janvier 2024, 21h45

Hawaii , Kilauea :

Dimanche 28 janvier 2024, 8 h 59 HST (dimanche 28 janvier 2024, 18 h 59 UTC)

19°25’16 » N 155°17’13 » O,
Altitude du sommet : 4091 pieds (1247 m)
Niveau d’alerte volcanique actuel : AVIS
Code couleur aviation actuel : JAUNE

Continued and Significant Fissure Evolution within Grindavík . A new graben has formed east of the graben that emerged within Grindavík on November 10
Updated 16 January 18:00 UTC

Magma continues to accumulate beneath Svartsengi at a rate similar to that observed before the last two eruptions. This was the consensus reached during a consultation meeting of scientists this morning. During the eruption this past Sunday, similar to the December 18 eruption, magma flowed eastward from the accumulation site beneath Svartsengi, creating a magma conduit extending from Stóra-Skógfell southward beneath Grindavík. Computational models support this observation and indicate that the origin of the magma was slightly further west compared to the previous eruption, leading to variations in recent GPS measurements compared to those recorded on December 18.

As a magma conduit forms close to the surface, the Earth’s crust is strained, causing the land above the central part of the conduit to subside and form a graben. Additionally, the ground is elevated on either side of it. Computational models reviewed at the consultation meeting show that the GNSS station in Svartsengi is located at the edge of the conduit, where the land rises as the conduit forms. Now, two days after the conduit’s formation, the Svartsengi GNSS station is expected to show subsidence if magma accumulation has ceased. However, this is not observed, indicating that magma accumulation continues as before.

The magma conduit generated in the eruption that began on Sunday lies slightly further east than the conduit that extended under Grindavík on November 10. Data collected and processed by the Icelandic Institute of Natural History and the National Land Survey of Iceland reveal that a new graben has formed east of the one that appeared on November 10. The newly formed graben measures approximately 800-1000 meters in width, as shown on the map below. The greatest subsidence within it is approximately 30 cm, but it is worth noting that the region is still experiencing subsidence, and the valley is progressively widening. In comparison, the graben that developed in Grindavík on November 10 had a width of about 2 km, with the most significant subsidence measuring around 1.3 meters.

Inside this recently formed graben, previously mapped fissures that were visible on the surface have expanded, and additional fissures have emerged. Consequently, the risk associated with these fissures and the possibility of ground collapse into them have increased in the eastern section of Grindavík compared to before.

Land uplift continues at Svartsengi . Danger still assessed as very high within Grindavík
Updated 17 January 18:00 UTC

Magma accumulation continues under Svartsengi. It is too early to assert the rate of the land uplift shortly after the volcanic eruption. Experts will continue to assess data from GPS meters in the area to get an overall assessment of the situation. One of the meters, which was located north of Grindavík, went under lava, but over 20 GPS meters are in the area that are being used.

Seismic activity has been mild over the magma conduit in the last 24 hours. According to computational models, magma lies shallow at the southern end of the conduit, where the land appears to be heavily fractured, making it easier for the magma to reach the surface. Therefore, there is a continued likelihood that new eruption fissures may open without warning.

There is still danger within Grindavík related to fissures and the potential for ground collapse into them. Significant movements have occurred in connection with the subsidence valley in the eastern part of the town. These movements were mostly along the fissures that formed on November 10 and had already been mapped.

Gas pollution was measured yesterday during work on wells connected to the utility system within Grindavík. The Icelandic Meteorological Office does not monitor localized gas pollution within Grindavík. It needs to be further examined whether the gas pollution is related to the magma lying very shallow in the area. It should be noted that dangerous gas pollution is among the issues mentioned in the current hazard assessment for Grindavík.

The IMO has issued an updated hazard assessment map. There are no changes in the overall hazard assessment for the areas compared to what was previously. The map takes effect at 15:00 today and is valid until Friday, January 19, at 15:00, unless there are changes.

Colombia , Chiles / Cerro Negro :

Weekly activity bulletin of the Chiles and Cerro Negro Volcanic Complex (CVCCN)

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the CHILES AND CERRO NEGRO VOLCANOES, the MINISTRY OF MINES AND ENERGY, through the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE (SGC), reports that:

In the week of January 9 to 15, 2024, a decrease in seismicity was recorded, both in occurrence and in energy released, compared to the previous week. The predominant seismicity continues to be linked to the fracture of the rocks of the volcanic edifice, although the presence of earthquakes associated with the movement of fluids within these volcanoes persists.
Fracture seismicity was located mainly towards the south of the Chiles volcano at distances between 0.5 and 3 km, depths up to 7 km from its summit (4,700 m above sea level) and a maximum magnitude of 1.7. None of these earthquakes were reported as felt.

Volcanic deformation processes are maintained according to the processing of recordings from ground-mounted sensors and remote satellite sensors.
The evolution of activity in the CVCCN continues, due to internal processes derived from the complex interaction between the magmatic, hydrothermal system and the geological faults of the area, such that the probability of occurrence of energetic earthquakes that may be felt by residents of the CVCCN area of influence persists.

Volcanic activity remains on YELLOW ALERT Status: Active volcano with changes in baseline behavior of monitored parameters and other manifestations

Japan , Suwanosejima :

JMA reported that the eruption at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater continued during 8-15 January. Eruptive events on 11 January produced ash plumes that rose as high as 1.1 km above the crater rim and drifted SE. An explosion at 05h48 on 13 January produced an ash plume that rose 800 m and drifted SE. At 00h22 on 14 January an explosion ejected large blocks 1.1 km to the N and 1 km to the S of the vent and produced an ash plume that rose 500 m above the crater rim. The Alert Level was raised to 3 (on a 5-level scale) and the public was warned to stay 2 km away from the crater. Another eruptive event at 23h13 on 15 January generated an ash plume that rose more than 1 km above the crater rim and drifted S.

The 8-km-long island of Suwanosejima in the northern Ryukyu Islands consists of an andesitic stratovolcano with two historically active summit craters. The summit is truncated by a large breached crater extending to the sea on the east flank that was formed by edifice collapse. One of Japan’s most frequently active volcanoes, it was in a state of intermittent Strombolian activity from Otake, the NE summit crater, between 1949 and 1996, after which periods of inactivity lengthened. The largest recorded eruption took place in 1813-14, when thick scoria deposits blanketed residential areas, and the SW crater produced two lava flows that reached the western coast. At the end of the eruption the summit of Otake collapsed, forming a large debris avalanche and creating the open Sakuchi caldera, which extends to the eastern coast. The island remained uninhabited for about 70 years after the 1813-1814 eruption. Lava flows reached the eastern coast of the island in 1884. Only about 50 people live on the island.

Costa – Rica , Poas :

The Poás volcano maintains a stable tremor, with small variations in amplitude and frequency content, dominating the frequency band between 1.5 and 5 Hz. During this week, an increase in the number of hydrothermal eruptions and of their energy. To date, 12 eruptions have been recorded, the largest was recorded yesterday, January 11, at 8:51 p.m., which produced a plume of water vapor and gas exceeding 500 meters in height (for dark and dark conditions). foggy at night, an adequate height estimate could not be made). The SO2/CO2 ratio remains high, with a weekly average of 1.8 ± 0.7, and a maximum of 3.4 observed on January 10. The SO2 concentration at the viewpoint is less than 3.3 ppm this week. During the last week, the NOVAC station recorded an average flow of 330 ± 30 t/d of SO2. The lake level continues to fall due to hydrothermal activity and lack of rain. The Sentinel satellite measured 53.7 tonnes of SO2 during its passage over the volcano yesterday.

OVSICORI-UNA reported that small phreatic eruptions at Poás continued to be observed during 8-16 January. Phreatic eruptions were recorded daily, ejecting sediment no more than 200 m above the lake’s surface and producing steam-and-gas plumes that rose no higher than 500 m. In a special report OVSICORI-UNA noted that both gas-and-steam emissions and seismicity began to increase during the second half of 2023. The lake level had been decreasing since October 2023 and eruptive events became more frequent and energetic in December; a phreatic eruption at 2051 on 11 January was the largest event recorded during December 2023-January 2024.

Colombie , Chiles / Cerro Negro :

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, communicates that from about 12:30 UTC, the intensification of explosive activity (projections) from the area of the North crater, produced an overflow of the ejected material which is channeled and accumulated in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco. The phenomenon was observed by surveillance cameras and is still ongoing at the time of this press release.
From the seismic point of view, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor is, currently, in the medium-low level.
There are no significant changes in the rate of occurrence and in the amplitude of the explosion tremors.
No significant variation was found in the ground deformation data.

Statement on Stromboli activity, August 03, 2023, 09:31 (07:31 UTC).

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, communicates that from the analysis of the images of the surveillance cameras, it has been observed that during the night and in the early hours of the morning, the splashes of the North zone from the crater are gradually decreasing in intensity and, therefore, the flow described in the previous press release has regressed and is currently cooling. Ordinary Strombolian activity continues in both the North and Center-South crater zones.
From the seismic point of view, the average amplitude of the volcanic tremor is, currently, in the average level. There are no significant variations in the rate of occurrence and in the amplitude of the blast quakes.
The signals from the soil deformation monitoring networks do not show any significant variations.

Further updates will be communicated soon.

La Réunion , Piton de la Fournaise :

Press release from the Paris Institute of Earth Physics, Piton de la Fournaise Volcanological Observatory, August 03, 2023 – 09:30 – 05:30 UTC.
Ongoing eruption

The eruption which began on July 02, 2023, around 08:30 local time continues. The amplitude of the volcanic tremor (indicator of an emission of lava and gas on the surface) remains very low compared to the start of the eruption and is relatively stable over the last 24 hours.

Given the poor weather conditions currently on site, no estimate of the lava flows by satellite method could be made over the last 24 hours; on the other hand, clearings early this morning allowed a visual feedback on the eruptive cone at 1720 m altitude and on the active lava field in the Grandes Pentes.
The activity continues with weak projections of lava at the level of the eruptive cone and the active lava flows – fed by resurgences from the lava tunnels – were located this morning – at 4 a.m. local time – at distances between 1200 and 2000 m from the eruptive cone, i.e. up to a minimum altitude of 1000-1100 m.

Low inflation of the summit area has been recorded since mid-July, indicating a re-pressurization of the volcano’s feeding system centered under the summit area with possible transfer of deep magma to the latter, then feeding the eruption.
The seismic activity recorded under the summit zone remains weak. Thus over the last 24 hours, six superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes have been recorded. This low seismic activity leads to a reduction in the risk of the appearance of a new crack and/or collapse in the crater, but does not mean that it can be excluded, as shown by the continuation of the summit inflation and the fluctuations in the amplitude of the tremor which are regularly observed.

Papua – New Guinea , Bagana :

RVO reported that the eruption at Bagana continued during 18-29 July. Intermittent ash emissions drifted NNW, NW, and SW. On 26 July fine ashfall was reported on the coast of Torokina (20 km SW). The ash also drifted toward Laruma (25 km W) and Atsilima (27 km NW). During the night of 28 July a small explosive eruption at 21h30 ejected lava fragments from the crater vents, according to reports from Torokina. A lava flow with two lobes was also reported. A second explosion occurred at 21h57. Incandescence from the lava flow was observed from Piva as it descended the W flank around 20h00 on 29 July. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a four-level scale).

Bagana volcano, occupying a remote portion of central Bougainville Island, is one of Melanesia’s youngest and most active volcanoes. This massive symmetrical cone was largely constructed by an accumulation of viscous andesitic lava flows. The entire edifice could have been constructed in about 300 years at its present rate of lava production. Eruptive activity is frequent and characterized by non-explosive effusion of viscous lava that maintains a small lava dome in the summit crater, although explosive activity occasionally producing pyroclastic flows also occurs. Lava flows form dramatic, freshly preserved tongue-shaped lobes up to 50 m thick with prominent levees that descend the flanks on all sides

Iceland , Litli Hrútur :

August 1, 2023
Lava flow measurements

Afternoon Yesterday, July 31, an aerial photography flight was conducted over the lava flow at Litli-Hrútur.

The images were obtained from TF-CAD around 17 yesterday. The Institute of Natural Sciences made a terrain model from the photos. Measurements show that the average lava flow over the past eight days (July 23-31) was about 5.0 m3/s.

The lava had reached 1.5 square kilometers and its volume was 15.9 million cubic meters. Lava expansion last week was not large, but mostly eastward, and the rim advanced 200-300m to Meradalir. The current eruption has grown a bit larger than the one that occurred in August last year, but compared to the 2021 eruption, this lava is still just over 10% of that which was issued at the time.

Measurements confirm that the lava flow is constantly decreasing, and given that the average flow applies over an eight-day period, it can be calculated that it is, at the time of writing, only 3 -4 m 3 /s.

Chemical composition measurements

Four-day samples in addition to previous measurements were chemically analyzed. There have been no significant changes in the chemical composition of the lava since the eruption began at Litli-Hrútur on July 10. The nature of the lava is very similar to that of the eruption that took place at Meradalir last year, but is different from that which took place during the first months of 2021 at Geldingadalur.

The decrease in the flow of homogeneous magma, as is currently the case at Litli-Hrútur, is explained by the emptying of an isolated magma reservoir which is not recharged by the magma of the mantle. Therefore, this year’s eruption is very different from the 2021 eruption when magma flowed directly from the mantle to the surface and magma production increased as the eruption progressed. These results may therefore indicate that the end of the eruption is near.

The sound of the avalanches was heard 34 times from Babadan post with low to moderate intensity.

The morphology of the southwest dome has undergone slight changes due to lava activity, while no significant changes have been observed for the central dome. According to an aerial photo dated June 24, 2023, the measured volume of the southwest dome is 2,465,900 m3 and that of the central dome is 2,346,500 m3.

Seismicity

This week, the seismicity of Mount Merapi showed:

24 shallow volcanic earthquakes (VTB),
64 multiphase earthquakes (MP),
2 low frequency earthquakes (LF),
984 fall earthquakes (RF)
9 times tectonic earthquakes (TT).

The intensity of seismicity this week is lower than last week, but the number of earthquakes is still quite high.

Deformation
Mount Merapi’s deformation that was monitored using EDM this week showed a shortening of the steepening distance by 3 cm/day.

Rain and lahars:
This week, there was no rain at the Mount Merapi observation post. There have been no reports of additional flows or lahars from rivers descending from Mount Merapi.

Conclusion
Based on the results of visual and instrumental observations, it is concluded that:
-The volcanic activity of Mount Merapi is still quite high in the form of effusive eruption activity. The state of the activity is defined at the « SIAGA » level.

The current danger potential is in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the South-South-West sector including the Boyong River for a maximum of 5 km, the Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng rivers for a maximum of 7 km. In the South-East sector, it includes the Woro River for a maximum of 3 km and the Gendol River for 5 km. While the ejection of volcanic material in the event of an explosive eruption can reach a radius of 3 km from the summit.

La réunion , Piton de la Fournaise :

Press release from the Institute of Earth Physics in Paris, Volcanological Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise. July 20, 2023 – 09:30 – 05:30 UTC.
Ongoing eruption

The eruption which began on 02/07/2023, around 08:30 local time continues. The amplitude of the volcanic tremor (indicator of an emission of lava and gas on the surface) is always fluctuating over time on the scale of a few tens of minutes, with phases of continuous tremor and phases of intermittent tremor. The amplitude of the tremor nevertheless remains low compared to the start of the eruption.
The fluctuations observed in the tremor are reflected at the level of the eruptive site by variations in intensity in the activity, with projections of lava fountains at the level of the more or less intense eruptive cone.

Thanks to milder weather conditions on the volcano yesterday afternoon, lava flow estimates were calculated by satellite method on the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University) and MIROVA (University of Turin). During the last 24 hours the flows were between <1 and 4 m3/sec, with an average of 3.7 m3/sec. Given the cloud mass present regularly on the eruptive site as well as the presence of lava tunnels, these flows may be underestimated.
Since the beginning of the eruption, the total volume of lava emitted on the surface is of the order of 8.5 (± 3) Mm3.

With the low surface activity, the morphology of the active volcanic cone – located southeast of the Enclos Fouqué at 1720 m altitude – hardly changes and the flow of the lava takes place mainly in lava tunnels, even if flows are still visible at resurgence points. On the VIIRS image (375 m resolution), acquired on July 21, 2023 at 9:48 UTC (1:48 p.m. local time), the thermal anomaly extended about 2 km from the vent and the active front was located at an altitude between about 1300-1500 m.
The flow front has not changed since July 5 and is now frozen. It is still 1.8 km from the road.
Low inflation of the summit area is still recorded, indicating a re-pressurization of the volcano’s feeder system with possible transfer of deep magma to the latter.

The seismic activity recorded under the summit zone remains weak. Thus over the last 24 hours, no superficial volcano-tectonic earthquake has been recorded. This low seismic activity leads to a reduction in the risk of the appearance of a new crack and/or collapse in the crater, but does not mean that it can be excluded.

Alert level: Alert 2-1 (eruption in the Enclos without any particular threat to the safety of people, property or the environment).

Peru , Ubinas :

UBINAS (PROVINCE OF GENERAL SÁNCHEZ CERRO) – IN AN ERUPTIVE PROCESS.

Eruptive process with low to moderate levels.
During the last 24 hours, 2 explosions have been recorded (00:56 and 09:22), in addition to ash and gas emissions, which reached a maximum height of 4,500 m above the summit of the volcano.
There were 95 earthquakes with a magnitude less than M1.5, associated with rock fracturing processes inside the volcano. In addition, 124 events believed to be related to gas and magma dynamics were recorded, along with 5.4 cumulative hours of seismic signals related to ash emission.

According to the analysis of satellite images and the SENAMHI dispersion model, the dispersion of ash and fumarole emissions took place towards the South-East and South sectors, towards the communities of Ubinas, Matalaque, Chojata and populated centers, as well as farms and pasture areas.

The approximate radius of assignment after today’s emissions is less than 25 km from the crater, that is to say in the area of the districts of Ubinas and Matalaque.
No thermal anomaly related to the proximity of a magmatic body to the surface of the crater has been detected.
The monitoring of the deformation on the volcanic structure shows variations of less than 7 mm of displacement (slight tendency to inflation).

Conclusion: The Ubinas volcano has started a new eruptive process, characterized by the recording of seismic signals associated with the rise of magma and fumarolic emissions which reached a maximum height of 4500 m above the crater. The population must remain attentive to possible ash falls and follow the recommendations issued by the Civil Protection authorities.

Recommendation: Maintain the volcanic alert level in orange.

AVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Issued: Saturday, July 22, 2023, 4:53 PM AKDT
Source: Alaska Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2023/A1121
Location: N 54 deg 45 min W 163 deg 58 min
Elevation: 9373 ft (2857 m)
Area: Aleutians

Volcanic Activity Summary:
The level of unrest has increased at Shishaldin Volcano over the past 6 hours. A steady increase in seismic tremor and intermittent infrasound signals consistent with small explosions are ongoing. Despite cloud cover obscuring the volcano, elevated surface temperatures consistent with lava erupting at the summit are evident in the latest satellite data. Based on previous eruption cycles, minor ash emissions are likely to occur and may increase over the next few hours. Clouds are obscuring web cameras and satellite images, and we have had no clear views of the volcano over the past day. Based on the level of unrest, we infer that any ash emissions occurring are below 20,000 ft. (6 km) above sea level and below the altitude of clouds in the region.

The last three significant ash events during the current eruption resulted in ash clouds up to 40,000 ft. (12 km) above sea level, similar to other historical eruptions. These events can occur with little warning.

Shishaldin Volcano is monitored by local seismic and infrasound sensors, web cameras, and a telemetered geodetic network. The local monitoring network has been partially impaired over the last few weeks due to telecommunications issues but seismic stations and web cameras south of the volcano were brought back online on July 19. In addition to the local monitoring network, AVO uses nearby geophysical networks, regional infrasound and lighting data, and satellite images to detect eruptions.

Recent Observations:
[Volcanic cloud height] unknown
[Other volcanic cloud information] Meteorological cloud tops 20,000–30,000 ft. (6–9 km) above sea level. Ash emissions possible below this level.

Hazard Analysis:
[Ash cloud] unknown
[Ashfall] Trace ashfall possible downwind of the volcano
[Pyroclastic flow] Possible on all flanks
[Mud flow] Possible on all flanks

Niveau d’alerte volcanique actuel : SURVEILLANCE
Code couleur actuel de l’aviation : ORANGE

Émis : samedi 22 juillet 2023, 16 h 53 AKDT
Source : Observatoire du volcan d’Alaska
Numéro d’avis : 2023/A1121
Emplacement : N 54° 45 min O 163° 58 min
Altitude: 9373 pieds (2857 m)

Mexico , Popocatepetl :

May 25, 11:00 a.m. (May 25, 5:00 p.m. GMT)

During the last 24 hours, according to the monitoring systems of the Popocatépetl volcano, 19 exhalations accompanied by water vapor, volcanic gases and ash have been detected.

1,089 minutes of high frequency tremors of low to moderate amplitude were recorded, associated with the continuous emission of gas, water vapor and ash, as well as the expulsion of incandescent material at a short distance from the volcano .

A slight fall of ash was recorded in the municipalities of Atlixco, San Pedro Cholula and Puebla Capital at 00:45 and a slight fall of ash in the municipality of Tetela del Volcán, Morelos at 06:00.

At the time of this report, an emission of water vapor, volcanic gases and light amounts of ash is observed in a South-South-East direction.

The volcanic alert traffic light is in YELLOW PHASE 3.

May 25, 7:00 p.m. (May 26, 01:00 GMT). Actualization

The tremor signal continues, while its amplitude continues to decrease. The weather conditions prevailing in the area do not allow visibility towards the volcano, however, it was sometimes possible to observe an emission of steam and gas with low ash content towards the South-South-East. Any changes in activity will be reported in a timely manner.

CENAPRED insistently reiterates the recommendation NOT TO CLIMB to the crater of the volcano, because there is the possibility of explosions, as we have seen on several occasions in the past, involving the emission of incandescent fragments. Therefore, he is required to respect the exclusion radius of 12 km. Also, in heavy rain, stay away from the bottom of ravines due to the danger of mudslides and debris.

WEEKLY BULLETIN, May 15, 2023 to May 21, 2023 (issue date May 23, 2023)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY
In the light of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) Temperature of the crater fumaroles: The temperature signal recorded on the edge of the crater is strongly disturbed by the intense rainfall events but always remains at high values.
2) CO2 flux in the crater area: There are no updates on CO2 flux values in the crater area.
3) SO2 flux in the crater area: at an average level
4) Geochemistry of fumarolic gases: There are no updates.
5) CO2 fluxes at the base of the La Fossa cone and in the Vulcano Porto area: The CO2 fluxes recorded at the sites of Rimessa, C. Sicilia show stable values, always above background levels. In the P4max site the flows decrease slightly on medium-high levels, while in the Faraglione site values close to the background level are recorded.
6) Geochemistry of thermal aquifers: stable but still high temperature values are recorded in the Camping Sicilia well and no variation in conductivity values; in the Bambara well, no significant change in the monitored parameters was observed.
7) Local seismicity: The rate of occurrence of local events was on average low.
8) Regional seismicity: No regional seismic event was recorded during the week
9) Deformations – GNSS: The network of permanent GNSS stations has not recorded any significant variations
10) Deformations – Inclinometry: The inclinometric network did not record any significant variations
11) Gravimetry: No significant change was recorded.
12) Other Comments: Mobile GNSS.
The time series acquired so far by the mobile GNSS network do not show significant variations around the Porto di Levante area.

In particular, the persistence of the danger linked to the diffusion of CO2 from the ground and the resulting accumulation near the emission zones at sea, in the leeward, topographically lowered zones, and especially in closed places , although monitoring data has shown that CO2 accumulations with life-threatening concentrations are also possible in open locations. However, the achievement of these CO2 levels seems to be highly dependent on the intensity of the smoke from the ground and on the meteorological conditions, both of which are highly variable in space and time, thus making it extremely difficult to forecast locally dangerous conditions. Finally, the intense condition and abnormal degassing in the area of Levante Beach, the mud basin and the expanse of sea facing it, suggests high activity of the local hydrothermal system and very sustained fluid dynamics, making the danger of groundwater explosions higher (although not quantifiable) throughout the area shown.

Seismology

The seismological activity of the period was characterized by the recording of:
A continuous tremor signal associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcano, which during the period presented a stability of its energy evaluated with the RSAM parameter between 0.4 and 0.7 µm / s, values considered in its basic level.
5,630 LP-type seismic events, associated with fluid dynamics within the volcanic system (Long Period). The size of the largest earthquake assessed from the Reduced Displacement (DR) parameter was equal to 33 cm2. No event presented the minimum energy to locate 445 TR-type seismic events, associated with the dynamics maintained over time of the fluids within the volcanic system (TRemor). The size of the largest earthquake assessed from the Reduced Displacement (DR) parameter was equal to 13 cm2. No event presented the minimum energy to be located

Fluid Geochemistry
The sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions data obtained by optical differential absorption spectroscopy (DOAS) equipment, corresponding to the Los Nevados and Tralco stations, installed respectively 10 km to the East-North-East and 6 km east-southeast of the active crater, had an average value of 1,826 ± 482 t / d, a value higher than that reported for the previous period and which is within the usual values for this volcanic system. The maximum daily value was 5,155 t/d on May 13.

Satellite thermal anomalies:
During the period, 2 thermal alerts were recorded in the area associated with the volcano, with a maximum volcanic radiative power (VRP) of 1 MW on May 6 and 14, a value considered moderate according to data processed by Middle Infrared Observation of Volcanic Activity (MIROVA). Through analysis of Sentinel 2L2A satellite images, 5 radiance anomalies in the area associated with the crater, on May 3, 5, 8, 13 and 15, with a maximum anomalous radiance area of 7,600 m2 on May 15.

Surveillance cameras
From the surveillance cameras, surface activity characterized by continuous whitish degassing is observed, which reached heights of up to 340 m on May 4. During the night, the degassing column was observed with incandescence, reaching heights less than 100 m above the edge of the crater. No pyroclastic emission is recorded.
It should be noted that on May 13, a massive retreat was identified, possibly occurring on May 12, on the eastern flank of the volcano, originating 50 m from the edge of the crater, and reaching a distance of 300 m.

Satellite geomorphological analysis
Thanks to the observation and analysis of Planet Scope, Sentinel 2-L2A and Skysat Collect satellite images, a North-East-South-West elongation pyroclast cone is identified inside the crater of the Villarrica volcano, with an opening through which outgassing is emitted. Recent pyroclastic deposits are not identified, nor is the near-surface lava lake observed.
During this fortnight, two trends in behavior were observed. During the first week, the continuous seismic energy, evaluated from the RSAM parameter, maintained a downward trend; however, for the following week, a slight but sustained upward trend was observed, which was related on the surface to an increase in SO2 gas values and with a slight increase in thermal emissivity. Therefore, signals are observed suggesting that surface processes remain unstable, albeit with lower explosiveness. This leads to maintaining the yellow technical alert and the possible assignment area within a radius of 1 km from the center of the active crater.
