MAYON VOLCANO BULLETIN 14 February 2018 08:00 A.M.

Mayon’s activity in the past 24 hours was characterized by sporadic and weak lava fountaining, lava flow and degassing from the summit crater. Although the upper slopes were heavily obscured, the seismic record indicated discrete episodes of lava fountaining that lasted five (5) to fifty (50) minutes. Throughout the night, lava flows and consequent incandescent rockfalls were observed in the Miisi and Bonga-Buyuan channels. Effused volumes of incandescent lava flows have advanced to 3.3 kilometers, 4.5 kilometers and 900 meters down the Miisi, Bonga and Basud Gullies, respectively, from the summit crater. Pyroclastic density currents or PDCs have deposited to the 4.6, 4.5 and 4.2 kilometer reaches of the Miisi, Bonga and Basud Gullies, respectively. Heavy rainfall yesterday also generated channel-confined lahars in the Anoling channel and sediment-laden streamflows in channels where PDC deposits were emplaced.

A total of ninety-four (94) volcanic earthquakes, most of which corresponded to lava fountaining events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network. Electronic tilt and continuous GPS still record sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November and October 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.
Alert Level 4 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano. The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the eight (8) kilometer-radius danger zone, and to be additionally vigilant against pyroclastic density currents, lahars and sediment-laden stream flows along channels draining the edifice. Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

DOST-PHIVOLCS maintains close monitoring of Mayon Volcano and any new development will be communicated to all concerned stakeholders.

Kadovar , Papua New Guinea :

A lava build-up has been observed emerging from the sea just off the Kadovar Island volcano in Papua New Guinea.

Lava has been gradually oozing from a breached vent on the small island which began erupting last month, prompting the evacuation of its over 600 residents.
According to the Rabaul Volcano Observatory, Kadovar’s eruption continues at a low-level with mild steaming at the summit, and a gentle emission of unexplosive lava.
The Observatory’s acting assistant director Steve Saunders said a dome of lava had formed and reached about 200 metres out to sea.
« It’s not super hot. That would make it more fluid. It’s actually quite viscous, thick stuff. So it’s coming out as a large, blocky lava flow. So they can see it from fifteen kilometres away. It’s a small, black steaming lump in the sea, and there’s a gap between it and the island, so they estimate about fifty metres. »

Mr Saunders said the eruption was pretty stable.
« And then there’s just slow, gentle emission of a flat lava. I mean flat when it’s got no gas in it. So it’s not explosive or anything, » he explained.
« But they (volcanoes) fluctuate. It can actually pick up or die down. That’s the million dollar question. The island itself of Kadovar will be uninhabitable for a very long time. The population of six hundred… and it was already overpopulated. So the majority of the people won’t be able to go back for a long time, no. »

Cumbal , Colombia :

Subject: Cumbal Volcano Activity Bulletin.
The level of activity of the volcano is maintained at the level:
YELLOW LEVEL ■ (III): CHANGES IN THE CONDUCT OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.

Following the activity of the CUMBAL VOLCANIC COMPLEX, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE informs that:

For the week of February 6 to 12, 2018, despite the low values of seismic energy emitted, there was an increase in seismic activity compared to the previous week, from 304 to 425 events. For this week, earthquakes related to rock fracturing predominated near the Mundo Nuevo crater (southwest of the Cumbal volcanic complex), with depths of up to 7 km from the summit (4700 m). ) and a local maximum magnitude of M 0.2 on the Richter scale.

The good climatic conditions of the evaluated week made it possible to record the emission of gas from the El Verde fumarol field, to the north-east of the volcanic complex; the emission columns were observed with little pressure, white color, low height and dispersion direction changing by the action of the wind.

The COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE is attentive to the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will continue to inform in a timely manner of the detected changes.

Devil’s Woodyard Mud Volcano , Republic of Trinidad and Tobago:

An inter-agency team of emergency responders reported that recent activity at the mud volcano at the Devil’s Woodyard in New Grant, Princes Town, seems to be subsiding.
In an update posted Tuesday afternoon, following three confirmed eruptions of the mud volcano the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government said the alert level for the site is currently level 1—the lowest on its disaster management scale— which means the volcano is in a state where it poses no immediate danger to human life and there is so far no indication, based on seismic and other tests, that a hazardous eruption is imminent.
“There has been some structural damage to the surrounding road but there’s a vast distance between the mud volcano and the nearest homes,” said Rishi Siew, the senior coordinator at the ministry’s disaster management unit. “A level 1 alert really means the regional corporation can handle the incident at this time since the volcanic activity does not disrupt or threaten the life or livelihood of any person or community.”

Homes evacuated as Devil’s Woodyard mud volcano erupts twice.
There have been two mud volcano eruptions at Devil’s Woodyard in Hindustan, New Grant this morning.
According to reports, the first eruption occurred sometime around 4 am, while another one happened just after 9 am.
The Newsday understands there has been no harm to human life but three homes in close proximity to the site have been evacuated.

Videos posted on social media showed the thick volcanic mud covering a large area.
There are also cracks in the ground as well as in the concrete footpaths around the site.
The Princes Town Regional Corporation’s Disaster Management Unit and other agencies are said to currently be on site.
The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government took to its social media account a short while ago to confirm the eruptions and warn citizens to be cautious at the site.

Volcanic Activity Summary:

The last detected explosive activity at Cleveland Volcano was on December 18, 2017. There is no evidence of significant activity since that time. Thus, AVO is reducing the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and the Volcano Alert Level to ADVISORY. Future explosive activity is likely, and would occur without warning. Previous explosions have produced hazardous conditions primarily near the summit crater, but occasionally they have been large enough to produce a drifting ash cloud.

Cleveland Volcano is not monitored with a full real-time seismic network and this inhibits AVO’s ability to detect unrest that may lead to future activity. We are able to detect explosive activity using infrasound and limited seismic instruments on the island.

Kadovar , Papua New Guinea :

According to RVO report released today, it appears that there has been some explosion between 9 and 10am today resulting in the complete disappearance of the SE Lava Dome formed out off the ocean (see image) . No Tsunami / wave generation is observed.
RVO reps stationed at Blupblup will inspect island by boat today and an update will be made following inspection.

VOLCANO INFORMATION BULLETIN
(No. 21 – 09/02/2018
Issue Date: 9th February, 2018
Volcano: Kadovar – East Sepik Province- Papua New Guinea Reporting
Period: 8th – 9th February 2018

Current Activity:

The eruption continues as the Main Crater produced continuous moderate emissions of thick white vapour clouds, rising 20m before being blown to the SE.
Steady continuous dull glow was observed at night. A continuous white steam plume is rising from the SE Coastal Vent to 10s of m above the island and is then blown to the SE.
At 8:45 am (LT) this morning, large explosions commenced from the lava flow at the SE Coastal Vent, these continued until 10:50 at which time the flow was seen to collapse and disappear beneath the sea.
Viewed from Blupblup the SE Lava dome build up from sea Level appears to have completely disappeared.
Some steaming from the site and ash plume is also observed.
The weather has tended to be clear during the day, but some showers at night. Mainly steam with minor ash is being emitted and is being blown to the SE. A weak plume extends for a few tens of kilometres.

The main crater of the volcano collapsed today sending a minor tsunami across to nearby Ruprup island. No casualties were reported.

Areas affected by ash fall: Downwind areas some light haze.
Seismicity: Described as low to moderate, with numbers of events fluctuating from day to day. There is no trend at present.
Other monitoring: The situation is also being monitored by various satellite techniques.
No significant SO2 emission was observed during this period.

Prognosis: The collapse of the SE lava flow, may have been due to collapse of the seabed it was sitting on, sliding of the flow on a sloping flank, or entry of water causing explosions as it flashed to steam and disrupting the flow.
The site of the flow will be visited this afternoon by boat. There were no immediate reports of any unusual waves having been generated.
The re-occurrence of small explosions at the summit is part of the natural variability and unless they become more numerous or larger do not necessarily mean a change in the situation.
There is a slight possibility that small tsunamis may be generated.
Risk: On the Kadovar Island is high due to explosions and hazards associated with toxic gas emissions. On the Mainland and other nearby Island there is a small risk of tsunamis.

Copahue , Chile :

During this period, one hundred and fifty-one (151) seismic events, of which forty (40) were classified as being of the volcano-tectonic (VT) type, associated with fracturing processes of rigid materials were recorded. The most energetic event had a local magnitude (ML) equal to M2.6 and was located 4.6 km in the north-northeast direction (NNW) of the active crater El Agrio, at a depth of 1.8 km . Similarly, one hundred and eleven (111) seismic events associated with dynamic earthquakes of fluids within the volcano, of which sixty-two (62) were classified as long-period type (LP) events were noted , with a small offset (DRC) of 9.7 cm2. In addition, forty-nine (49) very long-lived earthquakes (VLPs) occurred, with a maximum displacement value reduced by 3.4 cm2.

Throughout the period, a constant, low amplitude tremor signal mainly associated with sporadic gas and particle release from the El Agrio crater was recorded.
IP cameras installed in the vicinity of the volcano showed constant degassing of the active crater (El Agrio), characterized by sporadic ash emissions with a maximum height of 550 m. For a few days, during the night periods, an incandescence was visualized when weather conditions made it possible to observe the volcano.
According to data provided by two active GNSS stations installed on the volcano, no surface deformation due to changes in the internal dynamics of the volcano is observed.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from the differential absorption spectrometry equipment at the Mellizas station, 5 km east-northeast (ENE) of the active crater, had an average value for the period 604 ± 499 t / day, and a daily maximum value of 2438 t / day reported on January 5th. S02 emissions are at basic levels for this volcano.
No emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to the atmosphere in the volcano area have been reported, according to data published by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) Sulfur Dioxide Group (http: / /so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/).

No thermal warning has been reported on the volcano, according to data processed by Mirova (http://www.mirovaweb.it/).
The monitoring parameters indicate that the stability of the volcanic system continues, although the observed VLP seismic activity and incandescence suggest the presence of a magma body at relatively low levels that induce the activity of a hydrothermal system. superficial.

Therefore, the technical alert level remains at the level:
GREEN LEVEL: Active volcano with stable behavior – No immediate risk – Time for possible eruption: MONTH / YEARS.
Observation: It is recommended to apply precautionary access restrictions to an area close to the crater with a radius of 1000 meters.

Mayon , Philippines :

BULLETIN D’ACTIVITE DU VOLCAN MAYON , 10 février 2018 , 08:00 A.M.

MAYON VOLCANO BULLETIN 08 February 2018 08:00 A.M.

Mayon’s activity in the past 24 hours was characterized by near continuous lava fountaining, lava flow and degassing from the summit crater. Thirty-five successive lava fountaining episodes since 12:35 PM yesterday have been recorded by the seismic network. Discrete episodes lasted nine to 233 minutes and were accompanied by rumbling and heaving sounds audible beyond 10 kilometers of the summit crater. Incandescent lava fountains 150 meters tall generated steam-laden plumes that rose 800 meters from the summit before drifting northeast. Throughout the night, lava flows and consequent incandescent rockfalls were observed in the Miisi and Bonga-Buyuan channels. Effused volumes of incandescent lava flows have advanced to 3.3 kilometers, 4.5 kilometers and 400 meters down the Miisi, Bonga and Basud Gullies, respectively, from the summit crater. Pyroclastic density currents or PDCs have deposited to the 4.6, 4.4 and 4.2 kilometer reaches of the Miisi, Bonga and Basud Gullies, respectively.

Pyroclastic deposit along the Mi-isi gully of Mayon volcano. Burnt trees indicate how hot the pyroclastic density current or uson may have been when it rolled down the slopes of the volcano.

A total of thirty-six (36) volcanic earthquakes, most of which corresponded to lava fountaining events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network. Sulfur dioxide gas emission was measured at an average of 2526 tonnes/day on 07 February 2018. Electronic tilt and continuous GPS still record sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November and October 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.

Alert Level 4 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano. February 6, 2018, Updated at 11:00 hours.

Turrialba Volcano: activity over the last 24 hours:
The Turrialba volcano continues to emit ashes passively and this continues since the weekend, due to a very slight magmatic intrusion. An explosion occurred at 0812, but the ash did not exceed 500 m above the top of the crater.
The seismic activity during the last 24 hours has been kept low with a tremor of variable but weak amplitude.
Ash falls have been reported in San Ramón de la Union, Zapote, Goicoechea, Curridabat, Guadalupe, Coronado, Concepción de Tres Ríos, Lourdes de Montes de Oca, and a strong smell of sulfur. At the time of this report, the winds at the summit of the volcano are mainly directed to the southwest.

The Turrialba volcano maintains an ash emanation continuously and passively, but with a variable discharge volume. The column rises to less than 200 above the active crater and is dispersed westward according to the IMN data. The seismic activity is weak, dominated by a volcanic tremor of low amplitude (continuous signal produces vibrations generated by the passage of the fluids – water, gas or magma – through the cavities or cracks inside the volcano).

Kadovar , Papua New Guinea :

VOLCANO INFORMATION BULLETIN- No. 20 08/02/2018
Issue Date: 8th February, 2018
Volcano: Kadovar, East Sepik. Papua New Guinea
Reporting Period: 6th – 8th February 2018

Current Activity: The eruption continues.
The Main Crater produced continuous moderate emissions of thick white vapour clouds, rising 20m before being blown to the SE.
On the 7th infrequent booming / rumbling noises could be heard coming from the Main Crater accompanied by brighter glow at night.
Some incandescent projections were also reported.
The Western Vent and Southern Vent were obscured by fume from the Main Crater. A continuous white steam plume is rising from the SE Coastal Vent to 10s of m above the island and is then blown to the SE.
The lava flow appears to have thickened when seen from Blup blup. Minor collapses of the edges of the lava flow give occasional puffs of ash.
The lava flow glows dull red at night.

Ash plume: The weather has tended to be clear during the day, but some showers at night. Mainly steam with minor ash is being emitted and is being blown to the SE.
A weak plume extends for a few tens of kilometres.
Areas affected by ash fall: Downwind areas some light haze.

Seismicity: Described as low to moderate, with numbers of events fluctuating from day to day. There is no trend at present.
Other monitoring: The situation is also being monitored by various satellite techniques. No significant SO2 was observed during this period.

Prognosis: Eruptive activity continues at low levels. It has settled into a reasonable stable situation, but it is still possible for there to be variations in eruptive strength. The re-occurrence of small explosions is part of the natural variability and unless they become more numerous or larger do not necessarily mean a change in the situation. There is a slight possibility that small tsunamis may be generated, but the situation is stabilizing.

Risk: On the Island, High.
On the Mainland and other nearby Island, A small risk of tsunamis.

Mayon , Philippines :

BULLETIN D’ACTIVITE DU VOLCAN MAYON , 08 février 2018 , 08:00 A.M.

Volcan: Kadovar, Sepik Est.

Mayon , Philippines :

MAYON VOLCANO BULLETIN 06 February 2018 08:00 A.M.

Mayon’s activity in the past 24 hours was characterized by sporadic to near continuous lava fountaining, lava flow and degassing from the summit crater. Repeated lava fountaining from 5:57 AM to 1:46 PM and near continuous lava fountaining from 3:59 PM to present were recorded by the volcano seismic network. These were associated with generation of steam-laden ash plumes up to four hundred (400) meters high. The lava fountaining episodes were accompanied by rumbling sounds audible within 10 kilometers of the summit crater. Throughout the night, lava flows and consequent incandescent rockfalls were observed in the Miisi and Bonga-Buyuan channels. Effused high volumes of incandescent lava flows have advanced to 3.2, 4.5 and approximately 3.0 kilometers down the Miisi, Bonga-Buyuan and Basud channels, respectively, from the summit crater.

A total of one hundred sixteen (116) volcanic earthquakes, most of which corresponded to lava fountaining events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network. Sulfur dioxide gas emission was measured at an average of 1,583 tonnes/day on 02 February 2018. Electronic tilt and continuous GPS measurements indicate a sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November and October 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.

Volcanic Activities on Kadovar Island Subsiding , 04/02/2018

Reports from the Rabaul Volcano Observatory indicate that volcanic activity on Kadovar Island is slowing down despite continuous eruptions.
In a 24-hour report released on Friday, the RVO explained there is now a significant drop in Sulphur Dioxide emissions, which indicates no new lava displacement.

The report also revealed the volcano vents are emitting weak to moderate steam to over 100 meters above the island.
Meanwhile, the RVO has also confirmed the Karkar Island in Madang has emitted steam from its southern crater with no eruptions.
Experts from the RVO say Karkar is an active volcano, which is currently dormant and vigilance should be maintained at all times.
They have also called on authorities in Madang to review their disaster management contingencies if a disaster strikes.

Sabancaya , Peru :

Second consecutive week, averaging 22 explosions per day. Events associated with fluid movements (Long Period type) and ash emissions (Type tremor) continue to predominate. The earthquakes associated with the rise of the magma (type Hybrids) remained low in number and energy. 
The eruptive columns of gas and ash remained similar to the previous week, reaching a maximum height of 3500 m above the crater. The dispersion of these materials occurred within a radius of about 50 km, mainly to the south, southwest and northwest.

Deformation monitoring at the GNSS station indicates that the deformation curves continue to show a deflationary process, probably associated with the emission of gases and ash. 
The volcanic gas flow (SO2) recorded on 31 January a maximum value of 3388 tons / day, a value considered large. 
Two thermal anomalies were recorded according to the MIROVA system, with values between 1 MW and 2 MW VRP (Irradiated Volcano Power).

In general, eruptive activity maintains moderate levels. No major changes are expected in the following days.

BULLETIN D’ACTIVITE DU VOLCAN MAYON , 06 février 2018 , 08:00 A.M.

Mayon , Philippines :

MAYON VOLCANO BULLETIN 02 February 2018 08:00 A.M.

Sporadic and weak lava fountaining, continuous lava effusion and degassing from the summit crater characterized Mayon’s activity yesterday. Much of the activity produced low white to light-gray plumes, with the exception of four events that produced 750 to 1500 meter-tall gray ash plumes at 6:04 AM, 7:56 AM, 8:51 AM and 9:11 PM accompanied by loud booming sounds audible within 10 kilometers of the summit crater. Eleven (11) episodes of lava-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDC) events were visually observed between 8:51 AM yesterday and 2:01 AM this morning depositing along Miisi, Basud and Bonga Gullies within two kilometers of the summit crater. Throughout the night, quiet lava effusion fed lava flows and rockfall in the Miisi and Bonga-Buyuan channels and barrancos between these. The Miisi and Bonga-Buyuan lava flows have advanced to 3.2 kilometers and 4.0 kilometers, respectively, from the summit crater.

A total of three hundred thirty eight (338) volcanic earthquakes, most of which corresponded to sporadic and weak fountaining events, two (2) tremor events, eleven (11) distinct episodes of PDC generation from lava collapse and two (2) rockfall events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network. Rockfall events were generated by the collapsing lava front and margins of the advancing lava flows on the Bonga and Miisi Gullies. Sulfur dioxide gas emission was measured at an average of 3,066 tonnes/day on 01 February 2018. Electronic tilt and continuous GPS measurements indicate a sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November and October 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.

Fuego , Guatemala :

SPECIAL VULCANOLOGICAL BULLETIN 09-2018, Guatemala 01 February 2018, 09:45 hours (Local Time).

Vulcanian eruption of the Fuego volcano.

In the last few hours, the Fuego volcano has proposed a change in its eruptive pattern showing a vulcanian activity. The descent of pyroclastic flows mainly in the Seca (Santa Teresa), Trinidad, Las Lajas and Honda ravines is recorded. This generates explosions with ash columns reaching an altitude of about 7,000 meters (22,966 feet) moving more than 60 kilometers to the west, southwest and northeast of the volcano, causing falls of fine ashes on Santa Sofia, Morelia, El Porvenir, Finca Palo Verde, Sangre de Cristo, San Pedro Yepocapa, Panimache I and II, Ciudad Vieja, Antigua Guatemala, as well as west and southwest of Guatemala City .

SPECIAL VULCANOLOGICAL BULLETIN 11-2018, Guatemala 1 February 2018, 4.30 pm (local time): ENDED ERUPTION.

The eruption of the Fuego volcano is over, with a duration of 20 hours, where lava flows were generated, a series of pyroclastic flows in the ravines Seca, Trinidad, Las Lajas and Honda, which accumulated volcanic material. The explosions that persist on the volcano, recorded by the seismic station FG3, are weak to moderate, expelling columns of ash at 4700 meters altitude. (15,419 feet) spreading 15 kilometers to the southwest.

There are still clouds of ash that will disappear in the coming hours. The incandescent source is not observed so the lava flows will disappear.
The seismic station FG3, registers a normal activity, the graph of the released energy (RSAM), decreased to normal ranges.

Piton de la Fournaise , La Réunion :

Monthly bulletin , Thursday, February 1, 2018.

Seismicity:
In January 2018, the OVPF recorded a total of:
• 16 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (0 to 2 km deep) beneath the summit craters;
• 2 deep earthquakes (> 2 km deep);
• 115 collapses (in the crater Dolomieu, at the Enclos Fouqué ramparts and at the eruptive site of July / August 2017);
• 34 local earthquakes (under the island, Piton des Neiges side);
• 3 regional earthquakes (in the Indian Ocean area).
The volcano-tectonic activity under the Piton de la Fournaise massif thus remained weak in January 2018.

Deformation:
Throughout the month of January 2018, far-field GPS stations (at the base of the terminal cone and out of the Enclosure) continued to record a slow, continuous inflation, witnessing the pressurization of a deep source.
The main change comes from the stations around the summit craters which recorded during the first 18 days of January a high inflation (up to 1.2 cm of elongation of the summit zone in 2.5 weeks, Figure 1). This effect was also felt on the stations at the base of the terminal cone (up to 1.5 cm elongation) and in the far field (excluding Enclos ) but to a lesser extent (<0.5 cm elongation).

Figure 1: Illustration of the deformation over the last twelve months (the eruptions from January 31-February 27, 2017 and July 14-August 28, 2017 are shown in yellow and the injection of magma of May 17, 2017 is represented by a bar black). Here is shown a baseline (distance between two GPS receivers) crossing the Dolomieu crater from north to south (in black the raw data, in blue the data smoothed over a week). A rise is synonymous with elongation and therefore swelling of the volcano; conversely, a decrease is synonymous with contraction and therefore deflation of the volcano. (© OVPF / IPGP)

This high inflation observed at the level of the Piton de la Fournaise summit zone could be linked to a strong hydrothermal activity following the heavy rains of January (~ 1st fortnight of the month). The large influx of water into the superficial hydrothermal system and the rise in heat associated with a deep recharge (below sea level) have led to a thermal expansion of these hydrothermal fluids, at the origin of the inflation observed during the month (~ first half of the month).

Geochemistry of gases:
– Top emissions from the Piton de la Fournaise: persistence of low concentrations of H2S and sometimes SO2 in the air at the top of the volcano.
– CO2 concentrations in the soil at the level of the volcano deposit: intermediate concentrations. As with the deformations, the CO2 measurements were affected by the poor weather conditions of the first half of the month. The next steps will therefore be to follow.

Results :
All of these observations show for the month of January:
– a deep re-feeding of magma (below sea level) which is maintained;
– a pressurization of the superficial magmatic reservoir which remains weak;
– a significant hydrothermal activity in the first half of the month in connection with heavy rainfall.

Kadovar , Papua New Guinea :

VOLCANO INFORMATION BULLETIN – No. 18 02/02/2018  , Issue Date: 2nd February, 2018
Volcano: Kadovar, East Sepik. Papua New Guinea
Reporting Period: 31th January – 1st February 2018

Current Activity:
The eruption continues. The Main Crater produced moderate emissions of thick white vapor clouds, rising 100m before being blown to the SE. Steady continuous dull glow was observed for the last two nights.
A continuous white steam plume is rising from the SE Coastal Vent to 100 m above the island and is then blown to the SE.
The lava flow continues to grow – A distinct lobe has pushed out from the seaward nose of the flow, by about 20-30 m; this appears to be channeled by levees which have developed at the flows sides.
At 18:30 LT, 1st Feb, a collapse of the side of the lava flow facing Blup Blup was observed that resulted in a plume of grey ash and then vigorous steaming after the collapse which also glowed very brightly at night.
The main body of the flow has significantly bulged upwards, with a distinct ‘valley’ now visible between the bulge and the island’s flank. Thunder storms are active on the mainland, and this interferes with the identification of any noise from the island.

Ash plume: Mainly steam with minor ash is being emitted and is being blown to the SE. The plume extends for a few tens of kilometers.
Areas affected by ash fall: Downwind areas are affected by light haze.
Seismicity: High Frequency events were recorded during this period. Strong wind and waves are producing a very high background signal.
Other monitoring: The situation is also being monitored by various satellite techniques.
No significant SO2 emission was observed during this period, although rain and strong winds may be diluting and washing the gas from the atmosphere. No new deformation data is available.
Prognosis: Levels of SO2 being emitted have dropped recently and seismicity has lessened. Eruptive activity, however, continues at low levels. It has settled into a reasonable stable situation, but it is still possible for there to be variations in eruptive strength.

The continued quite rapid growth of the lava flow at the SE Coastal vent shows the eruption is still continuing. There is a slight possibility that small tsunami generation, but the situation is stabilizing.

Risk: High on Kadovar, on mainland and nearby islands – a small risk of tsunamis still exists

BULLETIN D’ACTIVITE DU VOLCAN MAYON , 02 février 2018,  08:00 A.M.

• 16 séismes volcano-tectoniques superficiels (0 à 2 km de profondeur) sous les cratères sommitaux ;
• 2 séismes profonds (> à 2 km de profondeur) ;
• 115 effondrements (dans le Cratère Dolomieu, au niveau des remparts de l’Enclos Fouqué ainsi qu’au niveau du site éruptif de juillet/août 2017) ;
• 34 séismes locaux (sous l’île, côté Piton des Neiges) ;

– une ré-alimentation profonde en magma (sous le niveau de la mer) qui se maintient ;
– une pressurisation du réservoir magmatique superficiel qui reste faible ;

Volcan: Kadovar, Sepik Est.

MAYON VOLCANO BULLETIN 30 January 2018 08:00 AM

Beginning 7:50 last night, energetic lava effusion with sporadic lava fountaining events and generation of lava-collapse fed pyroclastic density currents or PDCs or “uson” occurred until 11:06 PM. Although the upper slopes were heavily obscured, the seismic record indicated onset of this eruption cycle with a large-volume lava collapse at 7:50 PM at the summit crater that fed PDCs on the Miisi and Bonga Gullies, followed by lava fountaining at 8:16 that lasted 8 minutes. This was followed by obscured large-volume lava effusion that lasted for an hour and 36 minutes, interspersed with sporadic lava fountaining and/ or PDC generation based on the seismic record. Sporadic lava fountaining was visually and seismically detected and persisted until 11:06 PM. The lava fountains reached 200 meters high and generated ash plumes that reached 1.5 kilometers above the crater. Significant ashfall was reported in Camalig and Guinobatan, Albay before 9:00 PM, possible due to the lava fountaining and PDC events.

A total of one hundred nineteen (119) volcanic earthquakes, nine (9) tremor events, two (2) of which correspond to lava fountaining events, two (2) distinct episodes of PDC generation from lava collapse, and sixty-eight (68) rockfall events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network. Rockfall events were generated by the collapsing lava front and margins of the advancing lava flow on the Bonga and Miisi Gullies. Sulfur dioxide gas emission was measured at an average of 1,916 tonnes/day on 25 January 2018. Electronic tilt and continuous GPS measurements indicate a sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November and October 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.

Alert Level 4 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano. The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the eight (8) kilometer-radius danger zone, and to be additionally vigilant against pyroclastic density currents, lahars and sediment-laden streamflows along channels draining the edifice. Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

Sabancaya , Peru :

Explosive activity is down from the previous week, averaging 33 explosions a day. Events associated with Fluid Movement (Long Period Type) and Ash Emissions (Tremor) continue to dominate. Finally, the earthquakes related to the rise of the magma (type Hybrids) remain weak. 

The eruptive columns of gas and ash remained similar to the previous week, reaching a maximum height of 3000 m above the crater. The dispersion of these materials occurred within a radius of about 50 km, mainly to the southwest and northwest. 

Deformation monitoring at the GNSS station shows that the deformation curves maintain stable levels, without variations. 
The volcanic gas (SO2) flux recorded on January 22 has a maximum value of 3477 tons / day, considered large value. 

Five thermal anomalies were recorded according to the MIROVA system, with values ranging between 4 MW and 6 MW VRP (Radiated Volcano Power).
In general, eruptive activity maintains moderate levels. No major changes are expected in the following days.

Kusatsu-Shiranesan , Japan :

Volcanic activity still high at Mt.Kusatsu-Shirane.

The Meteorological Agency says another eruption on a similar scale is possible.

Officials are keeping the alert level for the volcano at 3 on a scale of 5. They say there is a risk of projectile rocks within a 2-kilometer range of the craters near the Kagamiike pond on Mount Motoshirane.
The local municipality has designated the area as an off-limits zone.
Many volcanic earthquakes have occurred since the eruption.

The daily numbers of quakes from Tuesday through Saturday were 639, 23, 50, 3 and 4. Two quakes had occurred as of 3 PM on Sunday.
Volcanic tremors occurred 4 times on Wednesday and twice on Thursday. They are believed to be caused by movements of underground hot water and gas.
No smoke can be seen around Mount Motoshirane in surveillance camera footage.

The agency is warning people to beware of falling rocks, volcanic ash, aerial vibrations and volcanic gas.
The land ministry flew a drone camera to investigate the crater and the area where the rocks landed.
Ministry officials operated the drone from a ski slope about 3 kilometers from the craters, and videotaped the off-limits zone to get a closer look at the crater and slopes.

Following last week’s eruption of Mount Moto-Shirane in Gunma Prefecture, both central and local authorities have come under fire for failing to issue a warning to climbers and skiers in the area until about an hour after the blast.
When a volcano erupts, the Meteorological Agency is supposed to issue an alert so people in the area can seek cover. Some experts blamed the tardy response to this incident on overly cautious officials.

The first alert “could just be that the volcano in question appears to have erupted. If they don’t know, more information can be provided in a follow-up alert. They should have operated more flexibly,” said Kazuhiro Ishihara, head of the Meteorological Agency’s Volcano Eruption Prediction Liaison Council, which includes experts from both inside and outside the government.
The agency detected volcanic tremors, usually seen prior to an eruption, around three minutes before the Jan. 23 event. When the mountain erupted at 10:02 a.m., waveforms on the agency’s monitor jumped. But due to poor weather, agency officials couldn’t confirm via its cameras whether any smoke and ash was being spewed.
They finally issued an alert at 11:05 a.m. and raised the volcano alert from level 2 to 3.

The Meteorological Agency in Tokyo first received information from municipal officials in the town of Kusatsu about 10 minutes after the eruption.
Meanwhile, employees at the Kusatsu International Ski Resort reported a possible eruption several minutes after the blast to the town of Kusatsu, where a task force was immediately set up.
Local authorities had to scramble amid contradictory information about casualties from falling rocks and an avalanche. It turned out later that no avalanche had taken place.
It wasn’t until 10:50 a.m. that the local government issued warnings over the public loudspeaker system telling people to take cover.

Many questions remain over how the information was collected and disseminated.
