– au cône en cours d’édification qui subit des phases de construction et de démantèlement, influant ainsi la vitesse des débits de lave au niveau de l’évent ;

Niveau d’alerte volcan actuel : ATTENTION

Press release of December 30, 2021 – 10:00 a.m.

The eruption that began on December 22, 2021 at around 3:30 a.m. local time continues. Over the last 24 hours the amplitude of the eruptive tremor (indicator of an emission of lava on the surface) still shows fluctuations. The fluctuations observed can be linked either to:
– the cone under construction which undergoes construction and dismantling phases, thus influencing the speed of the lava flows at the level of the vent;
– or to punctual releases of pockets of gas trapped in the supply ducts which can be released suddenly leading to an increase in the tremor.
The average amplitude of the tremor is this morning at about 50% of its initial amplitude.

The bad weather conditions on the volcano make it difficult to observe the eruption. Thus, no information relating to on-site activity can be given this morning.
However, the latest observation, made yesterday at 4:40 p.m. local time, shows:
. low lava fountain activity, with fountains rarely exceeding the height of the cone;
. mostly tunnel lava flow activity downstream of the cone;
. the small mouth located at the foot of the cone on the downstream side (and coming from the opening in the lava tunnel) still showed degassing, but much weaker than the day before.

Over the last 24 hours:
– A single volcano-tectonic earthquake under the summit was recorded.
– Surface deformations no longer show significant deformation.
In view of the bad weather conditions on site:
– No estimate of lava flow could be established by satellite method with the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University).
– No assessment of the position of the flow front could be made.

Iceland , Reykjanes Peninsula :

Update on the earthquake swarm in Geldingadalir
Latest information on seismic activity. Update on 29.12. at 11:53

Since midnight around 90 earthquakes have been detected. Yesterday there were around 1300 earthquakes detected in the Reykjanes peninsula as a whole. This is a lot less than the day before when around 2300 earthquakes were detected.

The scientific Advisory board for the civil protection services met on the 27th of December to go over the situation near Fagradalsfjall. GPS instruments and satellite interferograms show that the magmatic intrusion is limited to a dike intrusion by Fagradalsfjall, similarly as in February and March 2021 before the eruption onset on the 19th of March. In the event of a new eruption an onset time and location are highly uncertain, therefore it is not recommended to enter the area close to the previous eruption, until further developments.

In these circumstances there is more possibilities of falling rocks in the area and people are advised to be careful in steep hills and stay away from areas where there is a possibility of fallen rocks.
Yesterday around 400 earthquakes were detected. The seismic swarm is decreasing, the day before yesterday around 1300 earthquakes were detected on the Reykjanes peninsula. Yesterday at 10:22 a earthquake was detected east of Kleifarvatn, it was M3.7 and was felt in the capital area.

Italy , Stromboli :

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, from December 20, 2021 to December 26, 2021 (issue date December 28, 2021)

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY STATUS

In view of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Explosive volcanic activity of Strombolian type coupled with splashing activity, with a total frequency of events / hour at a medium-low level and with an explosion intensity at a low and high level both at North than Center-South
2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters monitored do not show significant variations.
3) SOIL DEFORMATION: The island’s soil deformation monitoring networks did not show any significant changes to report for the period under review.

4) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at an average level
The flux of CO2 from soils in the summit area shows a slight increase towards a level between high and very high.
The C / S value in the updated and validated plume in the plume is 18.7, settling to medium-high values.
There are no significant changes in isotope ratios compared to the previous sampling (November 15, 2021), settling on high values with an R / Ra of 4.41.
5) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: After the effusive event of November 26, the thermal activity observed by satellite showed low level anomalies.

VOLCANOLOGICAL REMARKS

During the observation period, the eruptive activity of Stromboli was characterized by the analysis of the images recorded by the surveillance cameras of the INGV-OE (altitude 190m, Punta Corvi, altitude 400m and Pizzo). The explosive activity was mainly produced by 5 eruptive chimneys located in the area of the North crater and 3 located in the area of the Center-South crater; all the eruptive vents are located inside the depression which occupies the terrace of the crater.

During the observation period, the area of the North crater produced explosions of varying intensity from low to medium with mainly coarse materials (lapilli and bombs) mixed with a fine part (ash), with an intensity of low to high and with products up to ~ 170 m in height on the terrace of the crater which, episodically, produced abundant fallout along the Sciara del Fuoco (for example, on December 25, variable intensity which, during the phases of greater vigor, produced modest rheomorphic flows, the front of which remained in the upper part of the Sciara del Fuoco). Regarding the Center-Sud crater area, the explosive activity fluctuated between low to medium-low with a level of intensity from low, and episodically, up to a high level, and with products emitted up to ~ 190 meters on the crater terrace, mainly produced by the S2 vent with mostly fine material (ash) and secondarily coarse (lapilli / bombs), the S1 vent and sector C did not show significant explosive activity.
The frequency of explosive activity with regard to the North zone fluctuated between 2 and 8 events / h with the exception of December 25 when the network of cameras recorded a number of events / hour up to 18 e / h.
In the CS zone the frequency was between 0 and 2 e / h.

Tonga Islands , Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai :

The eruption at Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai that began on 20 December continued through 28 December. According to the Wellington VAAC continuous gas-and-steam plumes with diffuse ash rose 6.1-12.2 km (20,000-40,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted NE and NNE during 22-23 December, based on pilot observations, satellite images, information from the Tonga Meteorological Office, and weather models. On 22 December Tonga Navy crew sailing near the island recorded Surtseyan explosions ejecting tephra 350 m high. The video confirmed that the vent was in the same area as the 2014 activity. According to a news article plumes of sulfur dioxide spread NNE over the Ha’apai, Vava’u, and Niuatoutapu island groups with the highest concentrations affecting the ‘Otumu‘omu‘a islands on 23 December.

Plumes became intermittent by 24 December rising to 10.4 km (34,000 ft) a.s.l. and occasionally as high as 12.2 km. Tonga Geological Services warned the public to stay outside of a 5 km radius of the vents. According to Tonga’s Lead Geologist, satellite images from 25 December showed that the island had grown 300-600 m on the E side, and ash was falling within a 10 km radius. During 25-28 December the gas-and-steam plume rose 9.1-12.2 km (30,000-40,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted N and NE; the lower part of the plume contained ash and rose as high as 3 km (10,000 ft) a.s.l.

Ashfall was confined to the vicinity of the volcano. Tonga Geological Services reported that during 27-28 December clouds of gas and steam drifted E across the ‘Otu Mu’omu’a Islands of Ha’apai at altitudes of 1-18 km (3,300-59,000 ft) a.s.l.; they warned residents to protect water reservoirs because rain may be acidic or contain traces of ash, though the plumes were predominantly drifting at high levels. One flight to Tonga was canceled on 28 December, for the second time since the eruption started.

Chile , Laguna Del Maule :

SERNAGEOMIN reported that inflation at Laguna del Maule continued in an area SW of the lake during 1-15 December, though deformation had been decreasing since October with a with a maximum rate of 1.88 centimeters per month. Deformation rates during November and December were comparable to those recorded prior to 2019. The number of volcano-tectonic events had also decreased; the largest event was a M 2.3 located 4.1 km ESE from the center of the lake at a depth of 6.1 km. The Alert Level for Laguna del Maule was lowered to Green, the lowest level on a four-color scale, on 24 December. ONEMI canceled the Yellow Alert for San Clemente, and reminded the public to stay 1 km away from the area producing anomalous carbon dioxide emissions, about 5 km SW of the lake’s shore.

The Laguna del Maule volcanic complex includes a 15 x 25 km caldera with a cluster of small stratovolcanoes, lava domes, and pyroclastic cones of Pleistocene-to-Holocene age. The caldera lies mostly on the Chilean side of the border, but partially extends into Argentina. Fourteen Pleistocene basaltic lava flows were erupted down the upper part of the Maule river valley. A cluster of Pleistocene cinder cones was constructed on the NW side of Maule lake in the northern part of the caldera. The latest activity produced an explosion crater on the E side of the lake and a series of Holocene rhyolitic lava domes and blocky lava flows that surround it.

– au cône en cours d’édification qui subit des phases de construction et de démantèlement, influant ainsi la vitesse des débits de lave au niveau de l’évent ;

. une faible activité de fontaines de lave, avec des fontaines ne dépassant que rarement la hauteur du cône ;
. une activité d’écoulement de la lave majoritairement en tunnel à l’aval du cône;

Iles Tonga , Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai :

Chili , Laguna Del Maule :

Press release of December 29, 2021 – 11:30 a.m.

The eruption that began on December 22, 2021 at around 3:30 a.m. local time continues. Over the last 24 hours the amplitude of the eruptive tremor (indicator of an emission of lava on the surface) shows fluctuations. The fluctuations observed can be linked either to:
– the cone under construction which undergoes construction and dismantling phases, thus influencing the speed of the lava flows at the level of the vent;
– or to punctual releases of pockets of gas trapped in the supply ducts which can be released suddenly leading to an increase in the tremor.
The average amplitude of the tremor is this morning at about 50% of its initial amplitude

The bad weather conditions on the eruptive site present since yesterday at the end of the afternoon, no longer allow visual feedback with the eruption. Thus no information relating to the fountains and lava flows as well as to the construction of the cone around the vent can be given this morning. However, the last observation, made yesterday at 6.30 p.m. local time, shows weak lava fountains as well as the appearance of a small mouth (opening in a lava tunnel) located at the foot of the cone on the downstream side.

Over the last 24 hours:
– Two volcano-tectonic earthquakes under the summit were recorded.
– Surface deformations no longer show significant deformation.
– No estimate of lava flow could be established by satellite method with the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University), following the cloud cover present since yesterday afternoon.
– The position of the flow front could not be observed for the same reason.

Iceland , Reykjanes Peninsula :

Since midnight around 90 earthquakes have been detected. Yesterday around 1300 earthquakes had been detected on the Reykjanes peninsula as a whole. This is a lot less than the day before when around 2300 earthquakes were detected.

Yesterday at 14:29 an earthquake M3.9 was measured by Hofmannaflöt, just E of lake Djúpavatn. It was felt in the capital region and east towards the town of Hella.

Earlier at 06:25 a eathquake of M3,4 was mesured in the same region but further south.

These earthquakes are interpreted as triggered earthquakes due to increased pressure caused by a dike intrusion near Fagradalsfjall.

Note, that the triggered earthquakes can set loose rocks and small landslides. Travelers are therefore urged to show caution in steep hillsides.

Italy / Sicily , Etna :

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER from December 20, 2021 to December 26, 2021 (issue date December 28, 2021)

SUMMARY OF THE STATUS OF THE ACTIVITY.

In view of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Degassing activity at variable rate of all the summit craters. Weak and discontinuous emissions of very dilute ash from the Bocca Nuova crater and the Northeast Crater.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Modest fracturing seismic activity; the amplitude of the volcanic tremor remained mainly at medium-low levels.
3) INFRASOUND: Moderate infrasound activity.
4) SOIL DEFORMATION: During the last week, the soil deformation monitoring networks have not recorded any significant changes.
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: The flow of SO2 appears at a medium-low level
The CO2 fluxes from the soil recorded by the Etnagas Network are average.
The partial pressure of dissolved CO2 shows values consistent with the seasonal trend.
The isotope ratio of helium arises on medium-high values (the latest data dated 12/16/2021).
There are no updates for the C / S report.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity in the summit area was at a low level after the effusive activity of December 13-14, 2021.

Emissions of dilute reddish ash clouds from (a) Bocca Nuova (BN) and (b) Northeast (NEC) craters during INGV staff observations on the morning of December 24

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week, the monitoring of the volcanic activity of Mount Etna was carried out through the analysis of the images of the network of surveillance cameras of the INGV, Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) and through the observations made by INGV staff.
The alternating weather conditions, for most of the week, made the observation of volcanic activity discontinuous according to the network of cameras. In general, the period was characterized by variable rate degassing activities of all summit craters, with the exception of the Bocca Nuova (BN) and Northeast (NEC) craters which produced ash emissions. discontinuous and weak.

In particular, after the modest effusive activity in the Valle del Bove and the brief episode of Strombolian activity of the Southeast crater last week, the activity of the summit craters was characterized by a variable degassing regime of all the craters. , mainly carried by the collapse crater located in the North-West sector of Bocca Nuova (BN-1), and to a lesser extent by the North-East Crater. Both craters produced light, discontinuous emissions of dilute reddish ash, rapidly dispersed into the atmosphere in the summit area.
The Voragine craters (VOR) and the Southeast crater (SEC), on the other hand, showed degassing mainly linked to the fumarolic systems present along their respective edges.

VOLCANIC TREMOR
The temporal trend of the mean amplitude of the volcanic tremor remained mainly at a medium-low level, throughout the week. The location of the source of the tremor is near the Northeast Crater, at a depth of approximately 0-2500 meters above mean sea level

Costa Rica , Turrialba :

Daily report of the state of volcanoes. Date: December 28, 2021. Update at: 11:11:00.

At 11:05:00 local time on December 28, 2021, an eruption was recorded on the Turrialba volcano, with a column that rose 50 meters above the height of the crater and 3390 m above sea level. (11,119.2 feet).
Duration of activity: 1 minute.
Seismic activity is similar, compared to yesterday.
At the time of this report, the winds are blowing from the northwest.

Today, December 28, 2021, there were 2 small eruptions with ash and « rumblings », all of them detected by the seismographs and the infrasound system: The first at 6:44 am and the second at 11:05 am. This latest eruption was observed and heard directly by those responsible for safeguarding the Turrialba Volcano National Park. Seismicity remains dominated by frequent volcanic earthquakes of low frequency type LP type linked to the movement of fluids (water, water vapor and gas). The gases emitted by the volcano show a tendency to decrease their content of sulfur gases such as SO2 and H2S with CO2 / SO2 ratios fluctuating between 20 and 14 and H2S / SO2 between 0.2 and 0.3. The SO2 concentration remains relatively low between 2 and 6 ppm. On the northwest inner wall of the west crater, an incandescent zone is always observed on fog-free nights, indicating fumarole temperatures of at least 300 degrees Celsius. No significant deformation of the volcanic building is observed. The SO2 gas and aerosol analyzers in the ambient air in Coronado show during the last 24 hours notably low concentrations and therefore good air quality: SO2 with an hourly average below the instrumental detection limit of 0.5 ppb and well below the maximum allowed hourly reference value of 75 ppb while PM10 recorded a daily average of 6.0 ug / m3 which is well below the daily average of the regulation on the quality of air of 100 ug / m3.

VOLCANO ALERT BULLETIN  – AMBAE ACTIVITY Monday December 27th 2021

15°24’0”S 167°50’0”E
Summit 4908ft (1496m)
Current Alert Level: Level 2

The Volcanic activity on Ambae Island has now increased from the minor unrest level to the major unrest level. The Volcanic Alert Level increased from Level 1 to Level 2.

The volcanic activity on Ambae has increased to the Level of major unrest, consistent with the Volcanic Alert Level 2. Since 5th of December 2021, the volcano activity consists of emission of steam and explosions of wet tephra ejected above the lake surface. New analyses suggest that the Ambae volcano activity has significantly increased. Volcanic hazards remain at the summit area and creeks (e.g., remobilization of remaining ash from 2017 and 2018 eruption).

The danger zone for life safety at the summit area remains limited in the Danger Zone . This danger is about 2 km radius from the 2017-2018 active vents. An additional danger zone is within areas of flowing creeks during heavy rain.
New observations confirmed that the volcanic cone has built up inside Lake Voui and Ambae volcano continues to emit volcanic gas and ash contained within Lake Vui, consistent with the activity of the Ambae volcano under Volcanic Alert Level 2 indicating ‘Major level of unrest; the Danger area remains at 2 km around the volcanic vents and within the area of flowing creeks. With this current volcanic activity, it is a useful reminder that eruptions can occur at any level of unrest with little or no warnings.

– au cône en cours d’édification qui subit des phases de construction et de démantèlement, influant ainsi la vitesse des débits de lave au niveau de l’évent ;

15°24’0″S 167°50’0″E
Sommet 4908ft (1496m)
Niveau d’alerte actuel : niveau 2

Strong earthquake activity in Fagradalsfjall mountain, Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcano

There is now a constant earthquake swarm activity in Fagradalsfjall mountain, part of the Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcano system. More than a dozen of earthquakes have been larger than magnitude 4,0 and it doesn’t look like this earthquake activity is doing to stop soon. Largest earthquakes in last few hours had a magnitude of Mw4,8 and Mw4,5. The earthquake north of Grindavík town appears to be a tension breaking earthquakes because of magma inflation in Fagradalsfjall mountain.

A lot of earthquakes on Reykjanes peninsula, more than a dozen green stars, hundres of red dots showing smaller earthquakes

This earthquake swarm is close to Grindavík town, this is a similar situation that happened earlier in the year 2021. Just before the eruption in Fagradalsfjall mountain. This earthquake activity is going to continue to grow until an eruption starts. This earthquake activity also happens in a wave, resulting in it lower earthquake activity between powerful earthquake activity. I am expecting more strong earthquakes in next few days, unless an eruption starts in Fagradalsfjall mountain or nearby area.

At 7:25 an M4.2 earthquake occurred a km S of Fagradalsfjall and it was felt widely in SW-part of ICeland. Around 1200 earthquakes have occurred so far today but 3600 were detected yesterday, thereof seven M4.0 or larger. No signs of volcanic tremor.

The 21st of December an earthquake swarm started by Fagradalsfjall volcano, since then around 12000 earthquakes have been automatically detected, thereof 14 larger than M4.0. The largest earthquake was a M4.9 the morning of 22nd of December and was felt in SW Iceland.

Press release of December 25, 2021 – 9.45 a.m.

The eruption that began on 12/22/2021 at around 3:30 a.m. local time continues. Over the last 24 hours the amplitude of the eruptive tremor (indicator of an emission of lava on the surface) shows fluctuations. These fluctuations can be linked either to:
– the cone under construction which undergoes construction and dismantling phases, thus influencing the speed of the lava flows at the level of the vent;
– or to punctual releases of pockets of gas trapped in the supply ducts which can be released suddenly, resulting in an increase in the tremor with a certain
periodicity.
The amplitude of the tremor is this morning at about 20% of its initial amplitude.

Since the evening of December 23, 2021, thanks to the closure of the eruptive cone, activity in lava tunnels has taken place at the foot of the cone. These tunnels extend over a hundred meters in length before the flow emerges into a single channel further downstream.

A field mission carried out yesterday afternoon by a team from the OVPF-IPGP made it possible to carry out new samples of the lava flow and to carry out thermal images
on the site . Field observations show that the lava fountain regime within the cone, although still active, is weak and the lava fountains exceed the height of the cone (<15 m) only intermittently.

Over the last 24 hours:
– A single superficial earthquake, of low magnitude (<0.5), was recorded directly above the summit.
– The surface deformations show a slight deflation at the level of the summit area, linked to the emptying of the magma reservoir located under the summit (at about 2-2.5 km depth)
feeding the eruptive site.
– The lava flow estimates, established by satellite method with the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University), are between 2 and 12 m3 / sec, with an average of 5
m3 / sec.
– The front of the flow, in graton, currently on a relatively flat area, moves only very slowly, between December 23 and 24 the front had progressed by less than 100 m and was located around 7.6 km from the national road 2.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

December 24, 2021 09:00 UTC. Volcanic monitoring continues on La Palma.

Since the last declaration, 13 earthquakes have been located on the island of La Palma, none of them have been felt by the population.
The magnitudes are between 1.4 and 2.5 (mbLg). The localization of hypocenters continues under the central area of Cumbre Vieja in the same areas as the previous days. 11 earthquakes were located at depths between 8 and 21 km and 2 at depths of about 35 km. No earthquake was located at a depth of less than 8 km.
There is still no volcanic tremor observed, the seismic noise remains at levels close to the pre-eruptive period.

The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows a complete reversal of the elevation recorded on December 19 at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers. In the rest of the stations, there are no significant deformations that could be associated with volcanic activity.
As in the previous days, no type of emission is appreciated and the height of the cone is measured, obtaining a value of 1,122 m on sea level.

Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission into the atmosphere from the current eruptive process at Cumbre Vieja was low yesterday. The low to very low emission rates are not related to the ascent of the magma, but to a process of solidification of the surface magma existing in the conduits of the eruptive center. In the case of non-visible volcanic gas emanations, the diffuse emission of carbon dioxide (CO2), associated with the 220 km2 of the volcanic system of Cumbre Vieja, continues to reflect an emission above the average value of background levels and yesterday , this diffuse emission was 7.3 times higher than the average for background levels.

fluctuations . Ces fluctuations peuvent être liées soit :
– au cône en cours d’édification qui subit des phases de construction et de démantèlement , influant ainsi sur la vitesse des débits de lave au niveau de l’évent ;

Espagne / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

Press release of December 23, 2021 – 12:00 p.m.

The eruption that began on December 22, 2021 at around 3:30 a.m. local time continues. With the decrease of the first lava fountains, the amplitude of the eruptive tremor (indicator of an emission of lava on the surface) decreased sharply during the day yesterday, and has stabilized today at around 30% of its initial amplitude. A few superficial earthquakes, and of Magnitude <0.5, are still detected directly above the summit, and two earthquakes were located under the eastern flank of the volcano about 0.6 km below sea level.

Over the last 24 hours:
– The surface deformations do not show any particular displacement.
– Thanks to milder weather, estimates of lava flow were established by satellite method with the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University), with an average of 4-7 m3 / sec and peaks at 22 m3 / sec.
Since last night, activity has only focused on one of the eruptive cracks, the one further downstream (around 2030 m altitude), where a cone began to form.

A field reconnaissance was made this morning thanks to the assistance of the Air Section of the Gendarmerie and the PGHM. This mission made it possible to precisely locate the vent which is still active and the flow front. Around 9:30 a.m. (local time):
– the lava flow, in graton, had traveled 2.2 km from its point of emission (and was located at approximately 2000 m altitude)
– the casting front was located at:
. 550 m from the southern rampart
. 3.2 km from the top of the big slopes
. 8.1 km from the road
. 9 km from the ocean.

This mission also made it possible to recover samples of lava (slag projected by lava fountains and lava flows) which will be very useful, once analyzed, to better understand the path taken by the deep magma and the dynamism of the eruption. At 9:30 a.m. local time, the lava fountain regime was still very active but with heights only intermittently exceeding the height of the cone, estimated at 10 m.

Italy , Stromboli :

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, from December 13, 2021 to December 19, 2021 (issue date December 21, 2021)

SUMMARY OF ACTIVITY STATUS

In view of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: During this period, a normal explosive activity of Strombolian type was observed with splashing activity in zone N. The total hourly frequency of the explosions fluctuated between medium and high values (11-25 events / h ). The intensity of the explosions varied from low to medium both in the area of the North crater and in the area of the Center-South crater.

2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters monitored do not show significant variations.
3) SOIL DEFORMATION: The island’s soil deformation monitoring networks did not show any significant changes to report for the period under review.
4) GEOCHEMISTRY: The flow of SO2 is at an average level The flow of CO2 from the soils in the summit area shows a slight increase towards a level between high and very high.
The C / S value in the updated and validated plume in the plume is 7.23, settling to medium-high values.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS

During the observation period, the eruptive activity of Stromboli was characterized by the analysis of the images recorded by the surveillance cameras of the INGV-OE (altitude 190m, Punta Corvi, altitude 400m and Pizzo). The explosive activity was mainly produced by 7 (seven) eruptive chimneys located in the North crater area and 4 (four) eruptive chimneys located in the Center-South crater area. All the vents are placed inside the depression which occupies the terrace of the crater (Fig. 3.1).

Description of eruptive activity recorded by surveillance cameras.
Sector N1, with two emission points, located in the area of the North crater produced explosions of mainly medium-low intensity (sometimes the products of the explosions exceeded 80 m in height) emitting coarse materials (lapilli and bombs) . Sector N2, with five emission points, showed an explosive activity of medium-low intensity (sometimes the products of the explosions exceeded 80 m in height) emitting coarse materials with a projection activity which was intense until December 16. . The average frequency of explosions varied from 8 to 18 events / h.
In the Center-South zone, sector S1 did not show significant explosive activity, while the three vents located in sector S2 produced explosions, sometimes at the same time, of mainly medium-low intensity (sometimes the products of the explosions exceeded 80 m in height) emitting fine matter (ash) mixed with coarse matter. Sector C exhibited modest explosions of gas and coarse materials.
The frequency of the explosions varied from 2 to 7 events / h.

Description of eruptive activity following inspections in the summit area.
In the North zone, the N1 crater was characterized by the presence of an active vent with explosions emitting coarse and ashless materials, the frequency of which was variable between 3 and 1 explosions / hour, respectively for December 15 and 16.
The N2 crater area was characterized by one active vent on December 15 and seven different vents the next day. On the 15th, during the observation period, the activity was localized exclusively at the level of a cone built on the north-western edge of the N2 zone towards the Sciara del Fuoco and was characterized by continuous puffs and splashing, with episodes of significant intensity lasting more than a minute. The explosions were characterized by the emission of coarse, ashless materials, with a frequency of 10 explosions / hour. On December 16, the splash activity had moved to a vent at the base of a cone inactive the day before and located on the northeast edge of the N2 area towards the Sciara del Fuoco. The material that accumulated near the eruptive vent with the splash activity determined the rapid growth of the cone. On the 16th, in sector N2, 5 other vents were active, all incandescent, of which three, sometimes four, produced simultaneous explosive activity with an explosive frequency of 6 events / hour. Only one of these mouths produced a modest amount of ash.
During the observation period, the plume prevented detailed observation of the Center-South zone in which, on the 15th, there was an incandescent vent in the easternmost sector of the CS1 crater zone.
The explosive activity was 2 and 1 events / hour, respectively for December 15 and 16 and was characterized by the emission of remodeled ash produced by one or more vents located in the southern sector of CS1.

Colombia , Nevado del Ruiz :

Bulletin of the activity level of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano.

The activity level continues at: Yellow activity level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the SERVICIO GEOLÓGICO COLOMBIANO reports that:

The seismicity linked to the dynamics of the fluids inside the volcanic conduits has increased in the number of recorded earthquakes and in the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This seismic activity was characterized by the appearance of continuous volcanic tremor, tremor pulses, long and very long period earthquakes, which exhibited moderate energy levels and variable spectral content. These earthquakes were located mainly in the Arenas crater. Some of these signals were associated with ash emissions, confirmed by cameras installed in the area of the volcano and by the report of officials of the Colombian Geological Service and Los Nevados National Natural Park.

The seismicity generated by the fracturing of the rock maintained similar levels in the number of earthquakes and in the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This seismic activity was located mainly in the distal South-South-West, North-East and North-North-West sectors of the volcano, in the Arenas crater and its surroundings and, to a lesser extent, in the South-East sector. The depths of the earthquakes ranged from 0.5 to 7.0 km. The seismic increase recorded today stands out, about 5.0 km northwest of the Arenas crater. The maximum magnitude recorded during the increase and this week was 1.7 ML (Local Magnitude) corresponding to the earthquake recorded on December 21 at 1:00 p.m. (local time), located 5.2 km north-northwest of the crater Arenas, 6.5 km deep.

Iceland , Geldingadalur :

Update on the eruption in Geldingadalur
Intense seismic swarm started , 22.12.2021

No new lava flows have been detected at the crader in Fagradalsfjall for the past three months. Uplift is still ongoing in the area and the scientists are currently working on modelling the ongoing processes and identifying the possible scenarios.

„It can be difficult to say with some accuracy when an eruption is finished, because the volcanic activity can be intermittent“ says Sara Barsotti coordinator for Volcanic Hazards at IMO. „Before the eruptive activity in Geldingadalir started, the Reykjanes peninsula has been very active in terms of seismic activity and magmatic unrest. As we know from the past, when the peninsula is reactivated, episodic eruptions might occur as a series“ says Sara.

Three months has gone since no new lava was produced from the main crader in Geldingadalir, so the eruption that started on the 19th of March lasted for about six months and can be considered closed. Deformation data show that there is still magma inflow in the crust by Fagradalsfjall so it is difficult to predict how the situation will evolve. „ We continue to monitor the Reykjanes peninsula closely but we can say that the specific eruption that started on the 19th of March got to an end. However, even though this episode is closed, we know the activity in the area is still ongoing and other eruptive phases might start in the near future“ says Sara.

IMO is monitoring the area closely and at 18:00UTC last night (21. Dec) a seismic swarm started 2-4 km NE of Geldingadalir. The activity then increased around 00:30UTC and it is still very active with 1-10 earthquakes per minute. Later in the night the activity shifted closer to the volcano in Geldingardalir. This activity can be explained as magma intruding in the crust. There are currently no indication of volcanic tremor in the area.

Up to this point this seismic swarm counted around1.400 automatically detected earthquakes and 90 of these are larger than M2. The largest earthquake was M4,9 and occurred at 09:23UTC at about 2 km SW of Geldingadalir.

Due to the elevated seismic activity the aviation color code has been raised from yellow to orange.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

November 20, 2021 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last declaration, 69 earthquakes have been located in the southern part of the island of La Palma, near the ongoing volcanic eruption. Four of these earthquakes were felt by the population.
The number of earthquakes has increased compared to the previous day and they are distributed in both intermediate (10-15km) and deep (30-40km) depths.
At 03:07 UTC, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 mbLg was recorded at a depth of 37 km and felt by the population with a maximum intensity of IV (EMS).

The tremor signal continues at a low level with slight fluctuations over the last few hours.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows an elevation of about 6 cm between November 17 and 19, as well as a deformation to the southwest at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers.

In the rest of the stations, the slight deflation possibly linked to the deep seismicity has stabilized.
In view of the image calibrated at 08:45 UTC, a column height of 3200 m is estimated, and an ash cloud diffuses in the east direction.

La Palma airport was inoperative this Saturday morning due to the build-up of ash from the volcano, AENA reported, while the rest of the airports in the Canary Islands remain open.
The airline Binter has already announced the temporary cancellation of its connections with La Palma at least until one flight in the afternoon inclusive, while continuing to assess the situation.
This closure of the airport coincides with a deterioration in air quality in the southern zone of Las Manchas, which has resulted in the closure of access via the Fuencaliente road, Cabildo de La Palma reported. Access to the coast, where the air quality is good, will be by navy boats.

The Pevolca panel of experts increased the volcano’s explosive index from 2 to 3 due to the large volume of pyroclasts emitted since the start of the eruption, which has exceeded 10 million cubic meters. The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute shared on its official Twitter account that, in recent days, « the large volume of fallen ash clearly indicated the passage at this level ». Experts note that this change « does not indicate that the rash will worsen or change his behavior. »

Seismicity continues at the intermediate level. The most intense earthquake in recent hours reached a magnitude of 4.6 and was located 37 kilometers deep.
The tremor remains at a low level.
Sulfur dioxide emissions are lower than in previous days and range between 10,000 and 17,000 tonnes per day.

Italy , Vulcano :

Alert on Vulcano, Civil Protection has requested an increase in the operational phase level from the current « attention » (yellow) to « early warning » (orange) level.

On the Aeolian Island, there is the « yellow » alert level, declared by the National Civil Protection Department. The mayor of Lipari, Marco Giorgianni, announced an ordinance prohibiting citizens from spending the night and staying in the port area of the island of Vulcano and adjacent areas, due to the levels of gas produced.

The President of the Sicilian region, Nello Musumeci, follows closely and is constantly informed by the Regional Civil Protection of the situation, which has been evolving for a few hours and which seems completely unprecedented, requiring the search for alternative accommodation for around 250 people. .

“The new increase in toxic gas emissions recorded in recent days by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology – declares President Musumeci – indeed requires the adoption of urgent precautionary measures to protect public safety and private, including the monitoring of phenomena and gases, the prohibition of risk areas and the possible evacuation of the population from their homes. Our government is close to the community and is committed to working with the mayor and all national structures in managing the emergency ”.

The highest national and regional institutions, the Ingv, the Arpa guarantee the monitoring of the situation which is confirmed in a strong evolution.

The Regional Department of Civil Protection, headed by Salvo Cocina, has requested that the level of the operational phase be raised from the current phase of « attention » (yellow) to « early warning » (orange) with the reinforcement deadly gas monitoring.

Iceland , Reykjanes Peninsula :

Strong swarm of earthquakes under Reykjanes Peninsula

Yesterday (20-Nov-2021) a large swarm of earthquakes started under the Reykjanes volcano. This swarm of earthquakes is quite large, with 217 earthquakes recorded to date. The largest earthquake had a magnitude of Mw3.5 but other earthquakes were smaller in magnitude.

Earthquake swarm at the edge of the Reykjanes Peninsula illustrated by a cluster of orange dots and a green star that shows seismic activity.

This seismic activity suggests that magmatic pressures in the region are increasing rapidly since the eruption of Fagradalsfjall Mountain stopped three months ago. Inflation that has been measured so far is around or above 2cm at the time of writing. As the seismic activity increases, it is clear that over the next few weeks or months, the seismic activity will increase on the Reykjanes Peninsula until the next eruption. The biggest earthquakes are felt in neighboring towns.

Colombia , Nevado del Ruiz :

Manizales, November 18, 2021 (7:40 p.m. local time).

Subject: Activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano. The yellow level of activity is maintained at level (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the MINISTRY OF MINES AND ENERGY through the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE, informs that:

Due to the changes in the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano and its unstable behavior, on October 14, 2021, a Unified Command Post (PMU) was organized, during which not only the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano was discussed but also prevention and mitigation actions to reduce vulnerability and reduce the threat of a possible increase in volcanic activity.

During this time the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continued to show unstable behavior. The seismic activity continued to be intense, mainly related to the movement of fluids inside the volcanic conduits. This seismicity was characterized by the appearance of continuous volcanic tremors of low to moderate energy level, tremor pulses, long and very long period earthquakes with variable energy levels located in the Arenas crater. In addition, there was a slight increase in seismicity generated by fracturing of rocks, generally of low to moderate energy, located in the Arenas crater at depths less than 2 km, and in sources proximal and distal of the crater. , at depths between 2 and 5 km, and between 4 and 7 km, respectively.
The deformation of the volcanic surface, measured from GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) stations and electronic inclinometers, continues to show minor changes.

In recent weeks, the MOUNTS, NASA FIRMS and Mirova portals have reported low-energy thermal anomalies over the volcano.
Compared to the surface activity, the volcano continues to present permanently small ash emissions, which dispersed according to the direction of the wind, which showed a very variable trend. In recent weeks, reports of volcanic ash fall have been received in the municipalities of Líbano, Herveo, Casabianca and Villahermosa (department of Tolima), Arménia and Filandia (department of Quindío), Pereira and Santa Rosa de Cabal (department of Risaralda) ) and Manizales, Villamaría and Chinchiná (Caldas department).

Spain / La Palma : Cumbre Vieja

November 18, 2021 11:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last declaration, 230 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation on the island of La Palma, 22 of which were felt by the population. This is the maximum number of localized daily earthquakes since the start of the eruption.
The seismicity is located in the same areas as the previous days under the central area of Cumbre Vieja and divided into two groups depending on the depth, a first group at a depth of 10-15 km and a second group with depths greater than 30 km.

The biggest earthquakes of this period were two earthquakes of 4.7 and 4.8 mbLg at 12:33 UTC yesterday recorded with a difference of a few seconds between them, both located at depths greater than 35 km. The maximum intensity associated with these earthquakes was IV (EMS).
The volcanic tremor signal, which had increased since November 16, dropped sharply around 6:00 p.m., coinciding with the reestablishment of summit emission activity.

The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows a gradual slowing of the deformation towards the south at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers.

In the rest of the stations, the slight deflation possibly linked to the deep seismicity has stabilized.
In view of the image calibrated at 09:02 UTC, a column height of 3,500 m is estimated, and an ash cloud of 3,000 m in a southwest direction.
The height of the cone is measured by obtaining a value of 1,129 m at sea level.

Today at 10:45 UTC, due to the increase in the height of the eruptive column, IGN issued a new VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) message informing that the maximum height of the eruptive column is 3500 m above sea level.

Experts from the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) predict that this Friday the intensity of precipitation in La Palma will decrease. The most relevant data they provided in their declaration:

– The volcanic tremor has started to descend again in the Cumbre Vieja region – it is at a low level – and follows the downward trend in sulfur dioxide emission, with estimated values between 16,000 and 32,000 tonnes per day, which are combined with explosive Strombolian « episodes », with the emission of a large quantity of pyroclasts, especially yesterday afternoon.

– The latest data available on the affected area is estimated at 1,040.54 hectares, or 3.37 more than in the previous update. The lava delta reaches 42.87 hectares.

– Experts detect a slight downward trend in seismicity.

– Weather forecasts indicate that the winds will shift to the west for the next few hours, so the concentration of ash could affect the operation of La Palma airport.

Italy , Vulcano :

This article is based on information provided by the Monitoring Center of the Aeolian Islands and the INGV sections of Palermo and Catania-Osservatorio Etneo.

Over the past summer, particularly from September 2021, INGV monitoring systems have measured significant variations in certain geophysical and geochemical signals on Vulcano (Aeolian Islands). Following these changes, from October 1, 2021, the Department of Civil Protection ordered the alert level to change from green to yellow for the island.

The yellow alert level provides for, in addition to a series of civil protection actions, the strengthening of monitoring and surveillance activities.

The INGV, with the contribution of several coordinated sections of the Monitoring Center of the Aeolian Islands, therefore created new networks and developed the existing networks, installing new stations for continuous measurement of various parameters and increasing detection activities on field. He also increased the number, frequency and extent of geochemical sampling and conducted other permanent surveys of other parameters.

Figure 1 – Map of the volcanic monitoring and surveillance instrumental networks of the island of Vulcano. Image modified from Aeolian Islands Monitoring Center website.

In particular, the Palermo section of the INGV has installed four geochemical stations for measuring the CO2 flux of the soil and the CO2 concentration in the air, which are in addition to the existing network, and a Multigas station for the detection of CO2 and SO2. At the same time, the Etneo Observatory installed seven new seismic stations, six of which are located on the island of Vulcano and one on the adjacent island of Lipari, to complement the existing stations. The INGV is also improving the monitoring of geophysical parameters. Indeed, two continuous acquisition gravimeters were installed and periodic gravimetric measurements were carried out on the La Fossa cone and around it (Figure 2).

Figure 2 – Periodic gravity measurements on the La Fossa cone, here at one of the cornerstones of the geodesic network at the edge of the crater (photo by Filippo Greco)

In addition, to increase the volcanic video surveillance network, a high definition camera has been placed which frames the northern sector of Vulcano from the island of Lipari and a new thermal camera which frames the fumarolic area inside the crater of La Fossa. . Finally, a test was carried out to measure the deformations of the ground by installing a real aperture radar GBRAR (Ground-Based Real-Aperture Radar) (Figure 3).

"

During the month of October, a campaign of thermal surveys and by LIDAR drones was carried out in collaboration with the University La «  Sapienza  » of Rome, for the study of the morphological and thermal variations of the summit area and the slopes of the northeast sector of the Cone of La Fossa. A measurement campaign was also carried out on the geodesic cornerstones of the GNSS network on the islands of Lipari and Vulcano, with high details on the crater of La Fossa and on the area of the fumaroles above the Forge Vecchia. Also in October, researchers from INGV-Osservatorio Vesuviano carried out a magnetotelluric prospecting campaign on the island.

INGV staff will set up new mobile GNSS stations, at the same sites where gravimeters have already been positioned, in order to integrate gravity data and gain more detail in the deformation observation near the crater.

Iceland , Fagradalsfjall :

Activity status of Fagradalsfjall, November 17, 2021.

From September 18 to today, no lava flows in Fagrdalsfjall crater have been seen. The gas is still measured, but in very small amounts.

Accompanying the eruption, the land around the volcano was sagging, possibly due to the magma flowing from the magma reservoir. At the end of August, we saw on the GPS counters that the sag was starting to reverse, and from mid-September the sag started to turn into inflation. The lift is very small, only about 2 cm where it is greatest. The latest satellite data show that the swelling of the land reaches the north of Keilir, south of the eruptions. The model’s calculations indicate that its source is at great depths and the most likely explanation is considered to be the accumulation of magma.

It is not unlikely that the powerful earthquake swarm that began in late September at the southern end of Keilir and lasted for about a month, was linked to inflation, although no deformation of the surface has occurred. was observed in connection with the eruption, which would have been a sign that the magma had approached the surface.

It is not uncommon for magma to accumulate under volcanic systems as a result of eruptions. This current inflation should not be an indication that magma will reach the surface in the near future, and it is entirely possible that this is a scenario that will take years or decades, but it is difficult to predict. predict its progress at this point.

Developments in Fagradalsfjall will continue to be closely monitored.
