Canary Islands , Tenerife :

– Yesterday Tuesday, July 12, 2022, from 05:50 a.m. (Canary time), the Canary Islands seismic network, operated by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (INVOLCAN) – records a swarm of very low magnitude hybrid events located under the Teide volcano. So far (09:00 Canary Islands time), at least 350 small seismic events have been identified.

-Informative update on the seismic swarm on the Teide (12:30 p.m. Canary time): the seismic swarm of hybrid events that the Canarian seismic network, operated by INVOLCAN, recorded from 05:50 Canary time today July 12, 2022, already showed more than 630 events detected, very small in magnitude. The events take place in the vicinity of Teide, at depths between 9 and 12 km.

The following figures show the number of events detected for each hour and the location of the events that have been located so far, and which reach several hundred (in black the earthquakes located during the last year, in red the events of the swarm.

Update on the Teide seismic swarm (2:30 p.m. Canarian time): Since 12 p.m. (Canarian time) today, July 12, 2022, the Canarian seismic network, operated by INVOLCAN, no longer records hybrid events. So there is a good chance that this swarm is over. We recall that the most probable origin of this type of swarm is the movement of fluids such as steam, gas or water, inside the hydrothermal system of the Teide volcano. Today’s swarm does not imply a higher probability of an eruption, but it does remind us that Tenerife remains a volcanically active island.

3) INFRASOUND: Infrasound activity increases with sources concentrated near Bocca Nuova.
4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: Signals from deformation networks did not show significant changes in this reference week
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at an average level.
Soil CO2 flux shows average values.
The partial pressure of dissolved CO2 in the aquifer shows values in seasonal variability.
There are no updates on the isotope ratio of helium. The latest data related to June 23, 2022 and was at medium-high values.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit area was at a low level.

Intense degassing of the Bocca Nuova (BN) crater seen by INGV personnel during the July 8 inspection.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week in question, the monitoring of Etna’s volcanic activity was carried out through the analysis of images from the network of surveillance cameras of the INGV, Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) and an inspection in the summit area carried out by INGV-OE staff on Friday 8 July.

In general, the state of activity of the summit craters did not show significant changes compared to what was observed during the last week, and was characterized exclusively by degassing activities.
In particular, the degassing activity of the summit craters was mainly carried out by the collapse craters located in the North-West sector of Bocca Nuova, characterized by an intense sometimes impulsive degassing. During the July 8 inspection, the BN1 vent was affected by degassing sometimes accompanied by rumbling, while the degassing at the BN2 vent was accompanied by emissions of very dilute reddish ash.
The Southeast Crater, on the other hand, showed degassing related to the fumarole systems present along the edges of the crater.
Finally, the Northeast Crater, whose bottom of the crater is obstructed, is affected by weak gas emissions from certain fumaroles present on the internal walls of the crater, while the Voragine crater shows no degassing activity.

Pavlof Volcano continues to erupt from the vent on the east flank just below the volcano’s summit. Seismic tremor and multiple small explosions were detected in local seismic and infrasound data, as well as on several regional stations. Minor ash emissions were observed in clear web camera images. Satellite data showed elevated surface temperatures over the last day and reflect the continued eruption of a small lava flow on the upper part of the volcano.

Small explosions associated with the current eruption could happen at any time and may be accompanied by small ash plumes within the immediate vicinity of the volcano. The level of unrest at Pavlof can change quickly and the progression to more significant eruptive activity can occur with little or no warning.

Pavlof is monitored by local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data, web cameras, and remote infrasound and lightning networks.

Weekly activity bulletin of the Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes.
Volcano activity continues at YELLOW LEVEL ■ (III): CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.

From monitoring the activity of the CHILES AND CERRO NEGRO VOLCANOES, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE (SGC) reports that:

For the period evaluated between July 5 and July 11, 2022, the seismic swarm process started on May 27, 2022 was maintained, showing fluctuations, both in the number and in the daily energy of earthquakes. During this week, 9325 events were recorded, with the predominance of earthquakes associated with a fracture of the cortical material inside the volcano, which were located mainly near the summit and south of the Chiles volcano, with epicentral distances up to 10.2 km and depths less than 9.6 km from its summit (4700 m).

19 of these events had local magnitudes (ML) greater than or equal to M2.0, 1 of which was reported as felt within the volcanic influence zone, recorded on July 8 at 9:20 a.m. with
local magnitude of M3.0.
On the other hand, some sensors that are part of the deformation network show low amplitude changes. No manifestation of surface activity has been observed and the other volcanic monitoring parameters remain stable.

Iceland  , Reykjanes Peninsula :

On July 12 , at 08:29, an earthquake M3.4 occurred 6.5 km NE of Reykjanestá as a part of a swarm. The earthquake was felt in Reykjanesbær. A M3.3 earthquake was measured in the same area at 08:16.

Around 690 earthquakes were detected by IMO’s SIL seismic network this week and they were all located manually. This is considerably fewer earthquakes than the previous week when around 1190 earthquakes were detected. Much of the difference can be explained by less activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula, but strong winds during the week may also have diminished the networks’ ability to detect small earthquakes. The largest earthquake of the week was an M3.2 on Reykjanes Ridge on July 4th. Three more M3 earthquakes were detected this week, two at Reykjanes Ridge and one at Katla Volcano. No reports have reached the IMO that these earthquakes were felt in the area. Three small earthquakes were detected on Hekla and seven on Grímsvötn.

Iles Canaries , Tenerife :

Activity:
The Fuego OVFGO volcano observatory reports a weak white fumarole at a height of 4,500 meters above sea level which is spreading west and southwest. 5 to 8 explosions per hour of weak and moderate characteristics are reported, these explosions generate columns of gas and ash with a height of 4,500 to 4,900 meters above sea level (14,764 to 16,404 feet) which extend to west and south-west of the volcano over a distance of 15 kilometres.

These explosions are accompanied by low to moderate rumblings with a weak shock wave. At night and early in the morning, an incandescent pulse was observed 200 meters above the crater. Weak to moderate avalanches are also recorded around the crater and towards the ravines of Ceniza, Taniluyá, Santa Teresa, Honda and Las Lajas. A locomotive noise lasting 1 to 3 minutes is reported. Ash falls are reported at Panimaché I, Panimaché II, Morelia, Santa Sofía, Finca Palo Verde, Sangre de Cristo and others in that direction. A lava flow is reported in the direction of the Ceniza ravine with a length of 100 meters, avalanches originate at the front of this flow.

On July 4, pyroclastic flows traveled 6 km in the Ceniza watershed and generated ash plumes that rose 5 km.

Emissions rose as high as 1 km above the crater rim and tephra was ejected 200-600 m from the vent. The Alert Level remained at 3 and the public was warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

The 8-km-long, spindle-shaped island of Suwanosejima in the northern Ryukyu Islands consists of an andesitic stratovolcano with two historically active summit craters. The summit is truncated by a large breached crater extending to the sea on the east flank that was formed by edifice collapse. Suwanosejima, one of Japan’s most frequently active volcanoes, was in a state of intermittent strombolian activity from Otake, the NE summit crater, that began in 1949 and lasted until 1996, after which periods of inactivity lengthened. The largest historical eruption took place in 1813-14, when thick scoria deposits blanketed residential areas, and the SW crater produced two lava flows that reached the western coast. At the end of the eruption the summit of Otake collapsed forming a large debris avalanche and creating the horseshoe-shaped Sakuchi caldera, which extends to the eastern coast. The island remained uninhabited for about 70 years after the 1813-1814 eruption. Lava flows reached the eastern coast of the island in 1884. Only about 50 people live on the island.

Philippines : Kanlaon :

The volcano is at Alert Level 1.
Slight increase in volcanic earthquake and steam/gas activity. Sporadic explosions from the summit crater or new vents. Notable increase in the temperature, acidity and volcanic gas concentrations of monitored springs and fumaroles. Slight inflation or swelling of the edifice.

Seismicity :
5 volcanic earthquakes
SO2 / Sulfur Dioxide Flux :
151 tonnes / day (01 May 2022)
Ground Deformation :
Volcano edifice has slightly inflated

PHIVOLCS issued a special notice for Kanlaon at 1400 on 3 July, noting increased earthquake activity beneath the summit. A total of 41 volcanic earthquakes were recorded by the seismic network beginning at 0500 on 30 June, including seven shallow tornillo signals indicating gas movement through fractures in the upper flanks. Ground deformation data from continuous GPS indicated minor, short-term inflation of the lower and mid-flanks of the volcano since January 2022, consistent with continuous electronic tilt data that had recorded inflation on the SE flanks since mid-March 2022. The seismicity and inflation likely reflected shallow hydrothermal processes. The Alert Level remained at 1 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public to remain outside of the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone.

Japon , Suwanosejima :

New Zealand , White Island :

Whakaari/White Island: Update on recent observations. Minor volcanic unrest continues. Published: Tue Jun 28 2022 9:00 AM

Volcanic Alert Level remains at 1
Aviation Colour Code remains at Green

Recent monitoring data, including flights to make visual observations and measure gas emissions, confirm volcanic unrest remains at low level at Whakaari/White Island. The Volcanic Alert Level for Whakaari/White Island remains at Level 1. The Aviation Colour Code also remains at Green.

Last week we completed a flight to measure gas emissions, and an observation flight to document any recent changes at the volcano and to remotely measure fumarole temperatures. Data from these flights, together with automatically collected monitoring data indicate that the level of volcanic unrest remains low and there has been little change in activity in the last few weeks.

The gas flight established that emission rates remain within typical long-term levels, with a decrease in the amount of gas being emitted from the active vents since the last observations in mid-May 2022. The temperature of the emitted gas and steam remains low with an observation of approximately 170 °C from 22 June 2022.

No activity beyond moderate fumarole emissions was observed from vents on the crater floor in the active vent area. Fumarole emissions were free of volcanic ash. Satellite based ground deformation indicates minor changes about the active vent-lake area. Seismic activity remains low.

These observations are consistent with low levels of volcanic unrest. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 1 and the Aviation Colour Code remains Green.

The Volcanic Alert Level reflects the current level of volcanic unrest or activity and is not a forecast of future activity. Volcanic Alert Level 1 indicates the primary hazards are those expected during volcanic unrest; steam discharge, volcanic gas, earthquakes, landslides and hydrothermal activity. While Volcano Alert Level 1 is mostly associated with environmental hazards, potential for eruption hazards also exists and eruptions can still occur with little or no warning.

Our on-island equipment has degraded over the past two and a half years. However, we are still able to retrieve data from the island due to some rerouting of data to the mainland.

Nicaragua , San Cristobal :

The San Cristóbal volcano had an eruption with gas and ash emissions at Chinandega in Nicaragua.
According to locals, around 7:35 a.m. there was an earthquake followed by the expulsion of ash and gas.

« There was an explosion in the area of the San Cristóbal volcano, there was an expulsion of ash, it caused a movement at that time and an explosion inside the volcano, we did not have another aftershock, » engineer Agustín Moreira told 100% NEWS, from the Natural Phenomena Observatory.
According to the expert, « volcanoes expel this type of material when they clean the ducts of their chimneys », he explained.

In several photographs posted on social networks, Internet users shared a series of images showing the volcano with a column of smoke visible several kilometers away.
So far, it is not known how many communities or towns are affected by the ash fall.

The San Cristóbal volcano is the highest volcano in the country and is located in northwest Nicaragua, in the Maribios mountain range. According to the monitoring carried out by OFENA, there have been no aftershocks, nor major eventualities endangering the inhabitants. « According to seismographs, the seismic activities of the volcano remain normal, » he explained. The San Cristóbal volcano is considered one of the most active in the country due to its constant eruptions.

So far, government authorities have not published a preliminary report on this event, which has caused astonishment among the inhabitants of the western zone of Nicaragua.

The expert advised the population to remain calm, cover containers with drinking water and wear masks to protect the respiratory tract due to the toxicity of gases and ashes.

Italy / Sicily , Etna :

WEEKLY NEWSLETTER, from June 20, 2022 to June 26, 2022. (issue date June 28, 2022).

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the surveillance data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: Pulsating degassing from the Bocca Nuova crater, fumarolic activity from different points on the Southeast Crater, modest fumarolic activity from the Northeast Crater.
2) SEISMOLOGY: Low seismic activity of fracturing; average amplitude of the volcanic tremor in the average level.
3) INFRASOUND: moderate infrasound activity.

4) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: Over the past week, ground deformation monitoring networks have not recorded any significant changes, confirming trends already highlighted in previous bulletins.
5) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at an average level
Soil CO2 fluxes recorded last week show a downward trend, settling on medium-low values
The partial pressure of CO2 of Ponteferro shows a peak above 0.25 Atm in the last period.
6) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: Thermal activity in the summit area was at a high level consistent with effusive activity which ended on June 16th. In the days that followed, especially this last week, the level was low.

Internal walls of the northeast crater, with the bottom completely obstructed.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
During the week, the monitoring of the volcanic activity of Etna was carried out by analyzing the images of the surveillance cameras of the INGV, Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) and through a
field survey carried out by INGV-OE staff on 23 June.
After the cessation of effusive activity in the Valle del Bove, on the night of June 15 to 16, no eruptive activity was observed on Etna. The degassing of the summit craters continued, with the exception of the Voragine crater, where fumarolic activity is almost absent. Gas emissions were observed in a few small fumaroles in the inner walls of the northeast crater, the bottom of which was completely obstructed.

The collapse craters of the Bocca Nuova crater inside the central crater of the volcano

A generalized degassing activity continued at the level of the Southeast Crater, fed by numerous fumaroles largely concentrated along the northern edge of the crater and in correspondence with the mouth which opened on May 12 on the same edge, which was the site of explosive activity until mid-June. Other fumaroles were inside the collapse niche formed during the February 10 paroxysm in the southern flank of the cone. No eruptive activity was observed after June 15, 2022.
The Bocca Nuova crater was the one with the most obvious signs of activity during the week. In the western part of the crater, in correspondence with the BN-1 crater, there are two open wells, which are the site of strong pulsed degassing, often accompanied by audible rumblings even several kilometers away on the flanks of the volcano. In the absence of wind and good visibility conditions, this outgassing formed a robust and dense plume. During the night hours, weak lightning was visible at BN-1, as documented by the visual surveillance camera on Montagnola and by a new high-resolution visual camera at Piedimonte.

Colombia , Chiles / Cerro Negro :

Weekly activity bulletin of the Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes.

Volcano activity continues at YELLOW LEVEL ■ (III): CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.

From monitoring the activity of the CHILES AND CERRO NEGRO VOLCANOES, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE (SGC) reports that:

Between June 21 and 27, 2022, the seismic swarm process that began on May 27, 2022 continued, exhibiting fluctuations in both the number and daily energy of earthquakes. During this week, 18,425 events associated with a fracture of the crustal material inside the volcano were recorded. The earthquakes were located near the summit of the Chiles volcano and to the south of it, with epicentral distances of up to 4 km with depths less than 6 km from its summit (4700 m). Of these earthquakes, 22 occurred with local magnitudes (ML) between 2.0 and 4.4, 3 of which were reported as felt within the volcanic influence zone: June 21 at 11:50 p.m. (ML 4.4 ), June 22 at 3:31 a.m. (ML 3.5) and June 23 at 7:59 a.m. (ML 2.5).

Some sensors that are part of the deformation network show changes that, although small in magnitude, may be associated with volcanic activity that has manifested itself seismically. No manifestation of surface activity has been observed and the other volcanic monitoring parameters remain stable.

The COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE and the GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE OF THE NATIONAL POLYTECHNICAL SCHOOL of ECUADOR remain attentive to the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will inform on any changes that may occur in due course.

Colombia , Nevado del Ruiz :

Nevado del Ruiz volcano activity bulletin.
The activity level continues at the yellow activity level or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE reports that:

Seismicity related to fluid dynamics within volcanic conduits increased in terms of the number of earthquakes and seismic energy released, compared to the previous week. This seismic activity was characterized by the occurrence of continuous volcanic tremors, tremor pulses, long and very long period earthquakes. In general, these signals exhibited moderate to low energy levels, variable spectral content, and were located primarily within Arenas Crater. Thanks to the cameras installed in the area of the volcano and the report of the officials of the National Natural Park of Los Nevados, the gas and ash emissions associated with some of these seismic signals have been confirmed. Likewise, thanks to the FLIR cameras (thermographic cameras) of the volcanic monitoring network, changes in the relative temperature of the emitted material have been observed.

Seismicity associated with rock fracturing increased in terms of the number of earthquakes and maintained similar levels in released seismic energy, compared to the previous week. Slight increases in this type of activity stand out on June 14 and 20. This seismic activity was located mainly in the Arenas crater and the North-West sector and, to a lesser extent, in the North-North-East, North-East and South-East sectors. The depth of the earthquakes varied between 0.4 and 7.5 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.7 ML (Local Magnitude), corresponding to the earthquake that occurred on June 20 at 12:17 p.m. (local time), located 5.0 km northwest of the Arenas crater, at a depth of 6.2 km.
It is important to mention that in the past few hours, seismic activity has been recorded in the southwest sector 3.3 km from the Arenas crater. This activity results in an increase in the number of earthquakes associated with rock fracturing. The maximum magnitude recorded during this increase is 1.0 ML (Local Magnitude), corresponding to the earthquake that occurred at 12:52 p.m. (local time), located 3.3 km southwest of the Arenas crater, at a depth of 3. 9km.

The recording of several episodes of low energy and short duration « drumbeat » type seismicity associated with rock fracturing and fluid seismicity on June 14, 15 and 18 stands out. This seismicity has been linked to the processes of ascent, emplacement-growth and evolution of a lava dome at the bottom of the Arenas crater.

Colombia , Chiles / Cerro Negro :

Extraordinary bulletin of activity of the Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes
The activity level of volcanoes remains at: YELLOW LEVEL ■ (III): CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

From monitoring the activity of the CHILES AND CERRO NEGRO VOLCANOES, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE (SGC) reports that:

On June 21, 2022, at 11:50 p.m., a seismic event of a Volcano Tectonic nature occurred, with a local magnitude of 4.4, which was reported as felt by the inhabitants of the municipalities of Cumbal, Túquerres, Ipiales, Ricaurte and Pasto ; and on the Ecuadorian side, in the city of Tufiño.
This June 22, 2022, at 3:30 a.m., an event of local magnitude 3.5 occurred, which was reported as felt from the Mayasquer Indigenous Reservation (municipality of Cumbal). These earthquakes are part of a recent seismic swarm process reported since May 27, 2022, with a total of nearly 40,950 events associated with crustal material fracture, most of low energy, standing out in this period, the recording of 30 earthquakes of local magnitude between 2.0 and 4.4. This activity was accompanied by some surface deformation changes in the epicentral regions of this seismicity. The other monitoring parameters show no changes.

In this context, for June 21, there were a total of 3,557 events; and to date, June 22, up to 4:00 p.m., some 4,160 earthquakes have been recorded. Recent earthquakes have been located mainly south of the Chiles volcano at distances less than 4 km and at depths of up to 6 km from the height of the summit of the Chiles volcano (reference level at 4700 m). altitude). For today, the occurrence of 7 earthquakes is also highlighted, at 02:21, 02:38, 03:33, 06:22, 08:45, 09:32. and at 3:50 p.m., with local magnitudes between 2.0 and 2.4, of which no reports were received of being felt.

In general, this activity has a behavior similar to what has been recorded in the Chiles – Cerro Negro volcanoes region since the end of 2013, with the recording of relevant seismic episodes, which mainly involve low level events. energy, but also some important in their energy that can be felt, mainly, by the inhabitants who reside in the areas of influence of these volcanoes, both on the Colombian and Ecuadorian side.
Based on the current behavior of this seismicity and what has been recorded historically in this active volcanic region, it is recommended that civil and indigenous authorities be attentive to official communications, inform their communities of what is happening and in cases where there are houses or buildings with conditions of structural vulnerability, take preventive measures to avoid conditions that generate risks for its inhabitants. Appropriate management of communication with communities will avoid falling into situations of alarm or misinformation.

Colombie , Chiles / Cerro Negro :

WEEKLY BULLETIN, from June 13, 2022 to June 19, 2022, (issue date June 21, 2022)

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the surveillance data, it is highlighted:

1) Temperature of the crater fumaroles: Still stable and high temperature values of the fumarolic emissions present on the rim of the crater.
2) CO2 flux in the crater area: In the VCS site, the values of the CO2 flux emitted by the ground are recorded in line with those of the previous week, equal to approximately 5000 g/m2/day (day June 20 ).
3) SO2 flux in the crater area: SO2 flux at a high level; data updated on 06/12/22
4) Geochemistry of fumarolic gases: The concentration of magmatic species (CO2, He, N2) is slightly decreasing (13 mol% CO2 on 05/30/2022).
5) CO2 fluxes at the base of the La Fossa cone and in the Vulcano Porto area: No significant variation is observed, the CO2 fluxes recorded in the C. Sicilia and P4max sites continue to remain at average values- high; at Rimessa there is a slight downward trend, at the Faraglione site the values are stable at near-bottom levels.

6) Geochemistry of thermal aquifers: The physico-chemical parameters of thermal aquifers show stable values. There are no significant changes.
7) Local seismicity: Reduction of local micro-seismicity, with low and medium-low values of the event occurrence rate.
8) Regional seismicity: Absence of regional earthquakes of magnitude equal to or greater than 1.0.
9) Deformations – GNSS: No significant variation is reported
10) Deformations – Inclinometry: No significant variation is reported
11) Other observations: Gravimetry: No significant variation was recorded.

CRATER FUMEROLES TEMPERATURE:
Along the upper edge, the maximum emission temperature has extremely stable values, with an hourly maximum of 380°C and an unchanged weekly average of 379°C (T1). The fumarolic field presents homogeneous emission temperatures all along the summit fracture line, confirming a thermal anomaly still maintained by a stable vapor flow.
The thermal signal of the T3 sensor (fumarole F5) overlaps the temperatures recorded in T2 (fumerola F5AT) while the site on the internal side after June 6 presents obvious disturbances (predominant modulation) of an exogenous nature and only reaches its maximum value at occasionally ( T = 105°C 112°C).

LOCAL SEISMICITY:
During the week, micro-seismicity related to hydrothermal fluid dynamics, as a whole, showed a clear downward trend. Indeed, the decreasing trend in the frequency of occurrence of micro-shocks continued with the spectral peak > 1 Hz (Fig. 9.1) and the phase of increasing low frequency events (VLP; spectral peak below 1 Hz) has been interrupted, recorded over the past week, with an obvious easing in the rate of occurrence of these events.

Colombia , Chiles / Cerro Negro :

Chiles and Cerro Negro volcanoes weekly activity bulletin
Volcano activity continues at YELLOW LEVEL ■ (III): CHANGES IN THE BEHAVIOR OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.

From monitoring the activity of the CHILES AND CERRO NEGRO VOLCANOES, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE (SGC) reports that:

Between June 14 and 20, 2022, the seismic swarm process that began on May 27, 2022 continued, exhibiting fluctuations in both the number and daily energy of earthquakes.

During this week, 13,511 events were recorded, mainly associated with a fracture of the crustal material inside the volcano. The earthquakes were located in two areas, most located south of the Chiles volcano less than 4 km and at depths less than 6 km from its summit (4700 m). The second zone, in which the seismic activity has considerably decreased, is also located south of the Chiles volcano, at a distance of between 6 and 9 km and a depth of between 7 and 9 km, from its summit (4700 m ) . During the assessed week, 13 events of local magnitude between M2.0 and M3.4 occurred, two of which were reported as felt within the volcanic influence zone.
Some sensors that are part of the deformation network show changes which, although of low amplitude, can be associated with the seismic process. No manifestation of surface activity has been observed and the other volcanic monitoring parameters remain stable.

The COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE and the GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE OF THE NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC SCHOOL of ECUADOR remain attentive to the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will inform on any changes that may occur in due course.

Information VOLCÁN CHILES, Wednesday, June 22, 2022:

As of 11:50 p.m. (local time) on Tuesday, June 21, the joint monitoring network of IG-EPN and OVSP records a swarm of earthquakes under the Chiles volcano, on the Ecuador-Colombia border (province of Carchi and Department of Nariño respectively). The largest earthquakes recorded in the region so far were 4.3 Mlv at 23:50 (local time) on 06/21 and another 3.5 Mlv at 03:31 (local time) on 06/22. These events were reported as felt, mainly in the province of Carchi and Imbabura in Ecuador and in Tuquerres, Pasto, Ipiales and Cumbal in Colombia. The Geophysical Institute of the National Polytechnic School and the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Pasto will continue to report any activity that occurs in the area. The Geophysical Institute is monitoring and any news will be reported.

Ecuador , Sangay :

Quito, Wednesday, June 22, 2022

Today, from around 12:30 p.m., the SAGA seismic station records seismic signals corresponding to the descent of mudslides and debris (lahars) on the Sangay volcano. These signals did not exceed the threshold established for reporting according to previous lahars, however, given the long duration of the signal (more than two consecutive hours), this report is issued as a preventive measure.

Lahar-type phenomena have been recurrent since the start of activity in May 2019 and this is due to the fact that the rains on the volcano remobilize the abundant volcanic material accumulated in recent weeks. As a precautionary measure, it is recommended not to enter or approach the beds of the Sangay Norte, Culebrillas, Palora, Volcán and Upano rivers.

The Geophysical Institute is monitoring and any news will be reported.

Philippines , Bulusan :

PHIVOLCS reported that unrest continued at Bulusan during 15-21 June. Emissions, sometimes voluminous, rose 100-500 m above the summit and drifted NW, WSW, and SW. Daily sulfur dioxide emissions were 660-1,255 tonnes per day. During 0500-2345 on 20 June the seismic network recorded 65 volcanic earthquakes, including one low-frequency volcanic earthquake; most of the events were weak and shallow. The Alert Level remained at 1 (on a scale of 0-5) and PHIVOLCS reminded the public not to enter the 4-km-radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) nor the 2 km Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the SE flank.

Luzon’s southernmost volcano, Bulusan, was constructed along the rim of the 11-km-diameter dacitic-to-rhyolitic Irosin caldera, which was formed about 36,000 years ago. It lies at the SE end of the Bicol volcanic arc occupying the peninsula of the same name that forms the elongated SE tip of Luzon. A broad, flat moat is located below the topographically prominent SW rim of Irosin caldera; the NE rim is buried by the andesitic complex. Bulusan is flanked by several other large intracaldera lava domes and cones, including the prominent Mount Jormajan lava dome on the SW flank and Sharp Peak to the NE. The summit is unvegetated and contains a 300-m-wide, 50-m-deep crater. Three small craters are located on the SE flank. Many moderate explosive eruptions have been recorded since the mid-19th century.

Japan , Suwanosejima :

JMA reported that the eruption at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater continued during 13-20 June. Crater incandescence was visible at night. Emissions rose as high as 1.6 km above the crater rim and material was ejected as far as 300 m from the vent.

Italy / Sicily , Etna :

Communication on the activity of Etna, June 16, 2022, 14:30 (12:30 UTC).

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Osservatorio Etneo, announces that from the inspections carried out by the staff of the INGV Etneo Observatory on June 13, 14 and 16 and from the surveillance cameras, it has been observed that the effusive activity at the mouth of about 2700 m a.s.l., reported in the previous press release, ceased on June 13, while between June 15 and 16 the flow of lava at the mouths of about 1900 m of altitude also ended in the area of Serracozzo. In addition, no ash emission from the Southeast Crater has been recorded.

The average amplitude of the volcanic tremor was in the range of average values. The sources of the tremor are located between the Bocca Nuova and the Southeast Crater, at an altitude between 2900 and 3000 m. The infrasound activity is weak and localized mainly in correspondence with the crater of Bocca Nuova.
The stations of the inclinometer and GNSS networks do not show any significant deformations of the ground.

Further updates will be communicated soon.

Seismicity related to fluid dynamics within volcanic conduits decreased in terms of the number of earthquakes and maintained similar levels of seismic energy released, compared to the previous week. This seismic activity was characterized by the appearance of continuous volcanic tremors, tremor pulses, long and very long period earthquakes. Likewise, through the FLIR cameras (thermographic image cameras) of the volcanic monitoring network, changes in the relative temperature of the emitted material have been observed.

Seismicity associated with rock fracturing decreased in terms of the number of earthquakes and maintained similar levels in released seismic energy, compared to the previous week. This seismic activity was located mainly in the Arenas crater and its surroundings and, in a scattered manner, in the North-East, East-North-East, East-South-East and South-South-East sectors. The depth of the earthquakes varied between 0.6 and 6.6 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.6 ML (Local Magnitude), corresponding to the earthquake that occurred on June 13 at 04:25 (local time), located 2.3 km south-south-east of the Arenas crater, at a depth of 3.3 km.
The recording of several episodes of low energy and short duration « drumbeat » type seismicity associated with rock fracturing and fluid seismicity on June 06, 07 and 11, 13 and 14 stands out. This seismicity has been linked to the processes of ascent, emplacement-growth and evolution of a lava dome at the bottom of the Arenas crater.

It is important to mention that, although during the last week the seismicity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano showed a general decrease in the number of earthquakes and similar levels of seismic energy released, during the last hours , seismic activity was recorded in the Crater Arenas region.
This activity results in an increase in the energy of continuous tremor and in the number of earthquakes associated with rock fracturing and fluid dynamics.

56.64 N, 161.32 E;
Elevation 3283 m (10768 ft), the dome elevation ~2500 m (8200 ft)
Aviation Colour Code is ORANGE

The extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 10-15 km (32,800-49,200 ft) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A growth of the lava dome continues, a strong fumarole activity, and an incandescence of the lava dome, explosions, and hot avalanches accompanies this process. According to video data, explosions send ash up to 6.5 km a.s.l. on 10 June, the ash plume moved to the southeast of the volcano. Satellite data by KVERT showed the ash cloud moved for 130 km south-southeast of the volcano on 10 June; a thermal anomaly over the volcano all week.

Between June 7 and June 14, 2022, the seismic swarm process that began on May 27 continued, showing fluctuations in the number and daily energy of earthquakes, reaching a total of 8,951 events for this week, in its form most associated with the fracture of crustal material inside the volcano. The earthquakes were located in two areas, the first located south of the Chiles volcano, up to distances of 4 km and depths less than 6 km from its summit (4700 m); The second zone is also located south of the Chiles volcano, at a distance of between 5 and 9 km and a depth of between 7 and 9 km from its summit (4700 m).

During the week evaluated, 8 events of local magnitude between 2.1 and 3.4 occurred, three of which were felt in the volcanic influence zone, as reported in the extraordinary bulletin of June 12. Today at 01:03 an event with a local magnitude of 3.3 was recorded, which was also reported.
No manifestation of surface activity was observed, nor significant variations in other parameters of volcanic monitoring.

The COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE and the GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE OF THE NATIONAL POLYTECHNICAL SCHOOL of ECUADOR remain attentive to the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will inform changes that may occur in due course.
