Volcanic Activity Summary:
Hot could avalanches with ash clouds at 08h36 UTC (15h36 local time). The eruption lasted for 500 seconds.

Seismic activity is characterized by the Deep Volcanic Earthquake, Low Frequency Earthquake, and Hybrid Earthquake. Hot clouds is observed through the south-Southeast slope and reaches a distance of 4600 meters from the summit, and through the east-Southeast slope and reaches a distance of 3500 meters from the summit.

Activity Level  of Level IV (AWAS). The Sinabung (2460 m altitude) since yesterday until this morning was often covered with fog. The smoke rising from the crater, during the periods when the volcano was discovered, could be observed rising from 70 to 700 m above the volcano. The wind is blowing moderately to the East Southeast. Thanks to the recording of the seismographs, 3 eruption events were recorded. An eruption occurred at 12h24 with a column of ash 2800m high and 15h36, with a column of ash that could not be observed because of fog. It was followed by the descent of hot clouds on the South-South-East slopes which reached a distance of 4600 meters from the summit, and on the East-South-East slopes over a distance of 3500 meters from the summit. 58 hot cloud descending events were noted with slip distances of 500 to 1500 m to the east-south-east. Until now, there is no report of victims.

Communities / visitors should not do activities within 3 km of the summit, and by sector, 7 km to the South-South-East, 6 km East-South-East and 4 km to the South-East. km northeast.
The deposits formed a dam upstream on the Laborus River. People living in downstream river basins and around the Laborus River need to be vigilant because these dams can collapse at any time and no longer retain water volume, resulting in downstream lahars / floods .

On 19 December Servicio Nacional de Geología and Minería (SERNAGEOMIN) Observatorio Volcanológico de Los Andes del Sur (OVDAS) reported an increase in activity at Nevados de Chillán’s Volcán Arrau dome complex during the previous three days. 

The activity was characterized by minor explosions occurring at a rate of four events per hour. Gas-and-tephra plumes rose 1 km above the crater rim. POVI reported that on 20 December explosions ejected incandescent material above the crater rim. The Alert Level remained at Yellow, the middle level on a three-color scale, and the public was reminded not to approach the craters within a 3-km radius.

With regard to monitoring the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE informs that:

During the last week, the various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to display unstable behavior.
The seismicity caused by the fracturing of the rocks that make up the volcano showed a slight increase in the seismic energy released and a decrease in the number compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were mainly located in the North Distal, Southwest, Northeast and Arenas Crater sectors. The depths of the earthquakes varied between 0.9 and 6.7 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.6 ML (Local Magnitude), corresponding to the earthquake recorded on December 25 at 14:58 (local time), located northeast of the Arenas crater, at a depth of 3.1 km.


The seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics within the volcanic ducts showed a slight increase in the number of recorded earthquakes and released seismic energy, compared to the previous week. This type of activity is mainly characterized by the occurrence of multiple fluid earthquakes, long periods and very long periods, as well as tremor pulses. The earthquakes were located mainly in the vicinity of the crater of Arenas and in the South-East sector of the volcano.

Volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) stations and radar images shows stability behavior without recording significant deformation processes of the volcanic structure.

The volcano continues to emit water vapor and gases into the atmosphere, among which the sulfur dioxide (SO2) is distinguished, as evidenced by the values ​​obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed on the volcano and the analysis satellite images. In tracking the information provided by the MIROVA and NASA FIRMS portals, several thermal anomalies were recorded in the vicinity of the Arenas crater.


The column of gas and steam reached a maximum height of 1200 m measured at the top of the volcano on December 25. The direction of the dispersion of the column was governed by the direction of the wind in the zone, which during the week prevailed to the southwest relative to the crater Arenas.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at the Yellow activity level.

Popocatépetl , Mexico :

Update of December 27, 11:00 am (December 27, 17:00 GMT)

In the last 24 hours, thanks to the monitoring systems of the Popocatepetl volcano, 236 low intensity exhalations have been identified, accompanied by water vapor and gas.
During the night, it was observed at times, an incandescence on the crater.

Starting today in the morning, there is a continuous emission of water vapor and gas, which the wind disperses to the Southeast. The other monitoring parameters remain without relevant modifications.


CENAPRED urges not to approach the volcano and especially the crater, because of the risk of falling ballistic fragments, and in case of heavy rains, to move away from the bottom of the ravines because of the landslides and flows of mud.

The Popocatepetl volcanic warning light is located at Amarillo Phase 2.
