Tinakula , Salomon Islands :
Solomons PM calls for calm in communities close to volcano .
24 OCTOBER 2017. Manasseh Sogavare has urged people to heed advice from national disaster authorities and not to spread rumours that could cause panic. Authorities said the Tinakula volcano was undergoing a category three moderate eruption that poses minimal threat to nearby islands.
The major concern was the impact of ash from the volcano on communities downwind of Tinakula in the Reef Islands where there are reports water supplies have already been contaminated. An aviation warning has also been issued for the Santa Cruz Islands.
The director of the National Disaster Management Office Loti Yates said there was no way of telling how long the eruption event will continue but they are closely monitoring the volcano’s activity.
Uncertainty for communities affected by volcano
A school teacher on one of the islands affected by ash from the erupting volcano says uncertainty was causing a lot of anxiety in his community. Teacher on Fenualoa, Matthew Matoko, said the ashfall had stopped but it has contaminated a lot of the wells and water tanks on the island.
Mr Matoko said the shortage of safe-drinking water on Fenualoa and the nearby islands was the most immediate problem but he says the lack of accurate information is also an issue.
« They are worried what will happen next besides the water. Does it bring good things to the island or you know they start making speculations will there be things like when sulphur combines with oxygen and then you have water will there be acid rain. All these things pondering on their minds. »
Mr Matoko said there was also a lot of concern for people on Nupani, an island much closer to the volcano than Fenualoa. He said there had been no news from that island because there is no mobile network coverage.
Police monitor volcano eruption .
25 OCTOBER 2017. Police at Lata in the Temotu Province are monitoring the situation in the province after the Tinakula volcano erupted on Saturday 21 October with the wind carrying ash to the nearby islands.
“Police successfully rescued three people from Tinakula after receiving a report in the early hours of Saturday that the volcano had erupted,” Provincial Police Commander Temotu, Frank Menesa said.
“The three people were reported to have gone to the island, which is uninhabited, to visit their gardens and pigs,” he added.
“Another team consisting of police and agriculture officers visited the island again on Monday 23 October basically to monitor the volcano and check on the 30-strong population on the nearby island of Niupani requesting them to take precautions,” Mr Menesa said.
He stated authorities in Lata are continuing to monitor the situation and have advised people on Santa Cruz and the Reef Islands to be careful as the islands’ drinking water has been affected by the ash from the volcano.

Nevado del huila , Colombia :
Subject: Weekly activity bulletin of the Nevado del Huila volcano.
The level of activity of the volcano continues at the level:
Level of activity yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
From the analysis and evaluation of the information obtained by the surveillance network of the Nevado del Huila volcano, during the week between 17 and 23 October 2017, the Colombian Geological Service – Vocanological and Seismological Observatory of Popayan: reports that :
• During the evaluation period, 283 seismic events were reported, of which 169 were related to rock fracturing processes (type VT) and 114 with fluid dynamics within volcanic conduits, of which 102 were recorded as Long Period events (LP type) and 12 as low energy level volcanic tremor pulses (TR type). From the seismicity recorded during the week, stands out the VT event that occurred on October 17 at 17:25 local time, which had a calculated magnitude of M3.8 degrees on the Richter scale, and was located at 11.2 km north-east of the central peak.
• From the images obtained during the week through the webcams of Tafxnú, Maravillas and La Palma, it was appreciated the volcanic degassing, which was characterized by white columns emitted by the top of the volcano.
• Monitoring sensors for soil deformation, magnetic fields and infrasonic waves did not show significant variations.
From the foregoing, it is concluded that during the evaluated period, the volcano continued to exhibit stable behavior.
The Colombian Geological Survey continues to monitor the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will inform in a timely manner of any changes that may occur.

Stromboli , Sicily:
Explosive event of Stromboli on 23/10/2017.
On the afternoon of August 23, 2017, from 16:04 local time, the cameras placed on the Pizzo above the Fossa and at 400 could observe a strong explosive sequence that affected the mouths of the south crater of Stromboli ( AREA CS in Figure 1).
Fig. 1 – The terrace of the crater seen from the thermal camera placed on the Pizzo above the Fossa, with areas where it is classically divided (ZONE N, ZONE C-S). Acronyms and arrows indicate the names and locations of active mouths.
This sequence caused the release of coarse pyroclastic materials – which fell off the crater terrace, on the Pizzo sopra la Fossa – and a dense ash plume that dissipated rapidly into the atmosphere. direction of the southeast quadrant.

Etna , Sicily :
At 7:47 pm yesterday, local time, October 23, an earthquake of magnitude M 2.1 local impacted the lower southeast flank of the volcano, in an area located about 1 km south of the city of Linera (CT). Despite the somewhat modest energy associated, due to the superficiality of its hypocenter (about 2 km), there were reports of feeling in the areas closest to the epicenter.
Yesterday’s earthquake followed, less than a week later, another earthquake activity that occurred in roughly the same area (Santa Maria La Stella area), which had a greater energy release, with a magnitude of local earthquake equal to M2.3 (October 17 at 16:11), also felt.
The seismic activity of these days, although of limited energy, is the manifestation of a clear recovery of the superficial seismic phenomenon in the lower east flank of the volcano, which is opposed to the deep dynamic seismicity that took place in recent months below its western flank.

Popocatépetl , Mexico :
October 24, 11:00 am (October 24, 16:00 GMT).
During the past 24 hours, 195 low-intensity exhalations accompanied by water vapor, gas and light amounts of ash have been identified through monitoring systems of the Popocatépetl volcano. In addition, two volcano – tectonic earthquakes were recorded at 00h31 and 07h14 with a magnitude of M1.8 and M2.1, as well as 20 minutes of low amplitude harmonic tremor.
At the time of this report, there is a continuous emission of water vapor, gas to the west.
The CENAPRED asks NOT to COME on the volcano and especially towards the crater, because of the risk of falling of ballistic fragments, and in case of heavy rains, to leave the bottom of the ravines because of the danger of landslides and flows mud.
The volcanic alert semaphore of the Popocatépetl volcano is located at Amarillo Phase 2.
