A small phreatic eruption of the volcano Rincon de la Vieja.

« Residents around Rincón de la Vieja volcano reported this morning at 10:20 am, a loud sound like the sound of a jet, according to the national seismology network (RSN), the noise was that of a major eruption. As the volcano expelled water, gases and sludge from the northern slope of the volcano, which reached the Penjamo River in Upala.

For its part, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica (Ovsicori) added that the materials have descended for about 15 minutes. The Ovsicori experts maintain extreme vigilance in the Rincon de la Vieja area, as it has maintained its activity in the last 24 hours.

The level of activity continues: at the level of yellow (III) activity: changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

As regards the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:

Over the past week, the various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to show unstable behavior.

The seismic activity associated with fracturing of the rock inside the volcano showed a decrease in the number of recorded earthquakes and seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This seismicity is mainly located in the northern sources and to a lesser extent in the southeast, southwest and in the Arenas crater. The depths of the earthquakes ranged from 0.7 to 6.5 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.8 ML (local magnitude) for the earthquake of May 21 at 8:06 pm (local time), located 5.0 km north of the Arenas crater, at a depth of 5 km.


With regard to the seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics in the volcanic structure ducts, these remained close to the energy levels reported the previous week. This type of activity is mainly characterized by the presence of several earthquakes of fluid, long period events and very long period and tremor pulses with varying energy levels and durations. Some of these seismic signals have been associated with ash emissions into the atmosphere, as confirmed by the cameras installed in the volcano region and the reports of PNN officials and civil aviation. The recording of such seismic signals with higher energy levels, which may be associated with emissions of gases and ash is not ruled out. It is important to remember that the ash emission processes can occur for several days and sometimes several times during the day, without involving an individual report for each episode.

Lahar moderate in ravine SANTA TERESA

Activity type: Vulcanian
Morphology: composite stratovolcan
Geographical location: 14 ° 28’54˝ latitude N; 90 ° 52’54˝ longitude W.
Height: 3,763msnm.

The observatory of the volcano Fuego OVFGO2 recorded the descent of a weak to moderate lahar, mainly by the Canyon Santa Teresa. This lahar carries volcanic material, blocks with diameters of about 2 meters, trunks and branches. This activity generates sounds produced by the collision of blocks which are transported, audible in the vicinity of the groove, rising steam columns because this lahar descends at high temperatures. It has a width of about 10 meters and a height of one meter.

The Santa Teresa canyon in the upper part has large deposits of pyroclastic flows which, due to the accumulation of moisture and constant rainfall in the area, offer a possibility of continuing to generate lahars descent. This canyon also drains the volcanic material of the El Mineral River, a tributary of the Pantaleon River. These lahars can damage roads and roads from San Pedro Yepocapa to Sangre de Cristo, and from Palo Verde to Santa Emilia, among other things, take the necessary precautions.

Sabancaya , Peru :

The explosive activity decreased slightly, recording an average of 38 explosions per day and maximal DR values of 140 cm2. Events associated with magma uplift (hybrid type) were recorded sporadically, while events associated with magma (LP) movement continued to increase. On May 9, there was a significant breakage event (VT), valued at 3.6 ML located 26 km from the crater.
• The eruptive columns of gas and ashes reached about 4,200 meters above the crater, spreading over a large radius of 40 km to the northeast, east, and south-east.

• GPS data analysis did not detect deformation on the volcano.
• The volcanic gas flow (SO2) reached a maximum of 2224 tons / day on 09 May.
• 10 thermal anomalies between 01 and 30 MW of radiated volcanic power were recorded.

Overall volcanic activity shows a slight increase compared to last week. Significant changes in the activity of the volcano should not be expected in the coming days.
