PNG volcano eruption alert level raised , 9:41 am today

Evacuation warnings have been issued again for Papua New Guinea’s Manam Island as the island’s volcano continues to rumble and spew ash.
The National reported the eruption alert level for the Manam volcano has been raised to stage three, a sign that people had to be moved off.


The volcano, which dominates Manam Island off the mainland’s north-east coast, erupted nine days ago.
Disaster authorities were recommending people leave as soon as possible.

A councillor for Dugulava village on the island said there were rumbling, blasts and spewing ashes from the volcano on Sunday night.
He said they had begun moving women and children to Bogia on the mainland.

The seismicity caused by the fracturing of rocks under the volcano, showed a decrease in the number of earthquakes and seismic energy released compared to the previous week. An increase in activity breaks out, on 20 April from 8:34 to 11:55 (local time), which was located in the Southeast zone, at depths ranging from 3 to 4 km. The maximum amplitude of the increase and week was 0.9 ML (local magnitude), recorded on April 20 at 08:38 (local time) at a depth of 3.3 km. The seismicity of the week was mainly located in the Southeast, Northeast and to a lesser extent in the Arenas crater. The depths of the earthquakes ranged from 0.4 to 7.1 km.
