INGV Bulletin describing the eruptive activity of Etna between 20 and 26 March 2017.

Section 1 – Volcanology
The monitoring of the volcanic activity of Etna during the week between 20 and 26 March 2017 was conducted by Marco Neri by daily visits to the scene of the eruption in progress and with the help of cameras  surveillance of INGV – Catania, Etneo Observatory Section (INGV-OE).

During the period under consideration, Etna’s activity was marked by a continuing crisis which began on 16 March with the eruption of the New South-East Crater. As for the other craters, a continuous degassing was produced by the Voragine crater (VOR), and in particular the mouth that was opened on August 7, 2016, in the vicinity of its eastern edge, which shows also visible glow during the evening / night hours. In addition, the slow subsidence of the bottom of the Bocca Nuova (BN) crater began, which began with the explosive events of 10 October, 2016, which reconstituted the two main cavities (BN-1 and BN- 2) already present in the BN in recent years.
In the northwestern depression (BN-1), from 1 February onwards, the presence of an incandescent degassing mouth was observed. Persistent fumaroles were observed along the edge of the structure of the central crater, inside which opens the Voragine and Bocca Nueva. An activity of generalized fumaroles has also been observed in the northeastern crater (NEC) and the New South-East Crater (NSEC).

Concerning the ongoing eruption at the NSEC, between March 20 and 22, the ash emissions and strombolian activity that marked the first days of the eruption are over. This activity continued to increase the size of the small pyroclastic cone that began to form during the previous eruption (February 27-March 1, 2017) in the morphological saddle existing between the old and new Southeast crater , And which now represents the culminating point of this summit crater. Once strombolian activity stabilized, an effusive activity emerged from a mouth that opened at the base of the new South-East crater, at an altitude of about 3010-3030 meters above sea level. the sea . From the eruptive mouth emerged a lava flow that is divided into different branches that first settled on the northern cone of Monte Barbagallo (the region of the former Torre del Filosofo) East and west.


A lava flow has thus bypassed the Monte Barbagallo, flowing towards the Southwest, in a « morphological incision » that exists between Monte Barbagallo and Monte Frumento Supino.
During the week, at about 2800 m above sea level this flow began to form a tunnel, the fluid reappearing a little below the surface. On 26 March the most advanced front of this lava flow reached a minimum altitude of 2455 m above sea level at a distance of about 2.5 kilometers from the vent.

A second lava flow has bypassed the opposite side, to the east, of Monte Barbagallo. It is the same flow of lava which, until the 19th of March, flowed along the western wall of the Valle del Bove. On 20 March, this flow started to be less fueled and was divided into several small arms, from which occasional ephemeral internal vents emerged in the same lava field, forming progressively shorter lava flows. On March 26, the most active active lava front was 2780 m above sea level, about 1.3 km from the vent.

Olga Girina, head of the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT), said: ‘This is the first serious volcanic event at Kambalny in the modern history of scientific observations. ‘According to researchers, a strong eruption occurred 600 years ago. There is information about its increased activity about 250 years ago. We are keeping a close look at the volcano. It is difficult to say how the event will unfold.’


The ash cloud was between 5 and 6 km above sea level when she spoke ‘but the trail extends thousands of kilometres already’. For now it is unclear about a lava outflow and whether the volcano will continue its activity or not. ‘The most interesting and – at the same time – the most difficult for research is that the volcano did not erupt in historical time. And we cannot even assess, there is no experience of observation, or how it worked previously. That is, it was silent for several hundred years, woke up and now we can just observe how it works.’

Report of activity of the volcano: March 28, 2017 at 11:00.

Since 1:33 on March 26, the volcano began to emit small plumes of continuously diluted ash, and from that day ash fumes became more consistent.
The seismic tremor had a maximum amplitude during periods of intense incandescence (observation overnight), suggesting a possible strombolian activity contained inside the active crater. Related to this, LP type earthquakes can be observed in the network of seismic stations located on the volcano.


Yesterday at midnight, although the tremor showed a relatively small amplitude, the ash emanations were constant, and today, since 7:50, began an ash eruption which continues during the edition of this report. The direction of the wind, as indicated by the IMN stations varied between the South and Southeast, carrying ash to places like La Pastora, Finca la Central and Turrialba Centro.
Falling ash is reported in Lajas de San Ramon in Turrialba, San Antonio in Santa Cruz de Turrialba and a smell of sulfur in Santa Teresita de Turrialba.
