Weekly activity bulletin of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 28 February to 6 March, 2017
The level of activity continue at : level of activity yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:
During the last week, various monitoring parameters show that the volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to show unstable behavior.
Seismic activity related to the fracturing of volcanic rock under the volcano has shown a decrease in the number of earthquakes and seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This seismicity was located mainly in the South-West, Northeast and Southeast areas, and to a lesser extent in the Arenas crater and the north-west sector of the volcano. The depths of the earthquakes varied between 0.5 and 7.0 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.8 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on March 1 at 11:07 pm (local time) at 3.3 km depth and located at 1.1 km northeast of the Arenas crater.
Regarding seismicity related to fluid dynamics in the conduits of the volcanic edifice, it continued to record rates during the week similar to the previous week. This type of activity is characterized by the appearance of earthquakes with different levels of energy, long period (LP) and very long period (VLP) type, several pulses of tremors and earthquakes of fluids. The earthquakes were mainly located in the Arenas crater and, to a lesser extent, in the South-South-East sector of the volcano. Some of these seismic signals have been associated with emissions of gases and ash into the atmosphere, as confirmed by the cameras installed in the volcano region and reports from the Los Nevados National Park (Pnnn). The recording of seismic signals of this kind is not excluded, with higher energy levels which may be associated with emissions of gas and ash. It is important to remember that ash emission processes can occur over several days and sometimes several times a day, without involving an individual report for each episode.
Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and satellite images to determine changes in tilt, position and shape of the volcano, continues to record In recent months a deflationary process and intermittent inflation / deflationary impulses, possibly linked to gas and ash emissions.
The volcano continues to emit significant amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcanic analysis area and the satellite image. In the tracking information provided by the Mírová site and NASA FIRMES, several thermal anomalies were identified, on 28 February; 03, 04, 05 and 6 March.
The column of gas, steam and ash from time to time reached a maximum height of 2000 m measured on the top of the volcano on 1 March. The direction of dispersal towards the column was in line with the prevailing wind regime in the area which during the week was directed to the northwest and southwest of the volcano.
The volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to activity level Amarillo.

During this period, 761 seismic events (761) were recorded, of which seventy-seven (67) were classified as volcano-tectonic (VT), related to the fracture of rigid material with an amplitude less than or equal to M1 , 7. The largest earthquake was located 5.7 km south-east (SE) of the active crater, at a depth of 4.3 km. Similarly, 639 long-term earthquakes (LP) associated with fluid dynamics within the volcano, with a maximum local magnitude of M2.4 were recorded. The long-time event of greater recorded energy has a shift of waves of reduced value (RDC) equal to 58 cm2. In addition, fifty-two (52) events called long-term events called Tornillos (TO) in relation to resonance oscillations due to transit of hydrothermal and / or magmatic fluid within the volcanic ducts were recorded. In addition, three (3) tremor (TR) episodes with a small displacement (DRC) of less than 1.5 cm2 with dominant frequencies between 1.5 and 4 hz were recorded.
The images obtained from cameras installed near the volcanic complex showed low degassing from currently active craters with heights not exceeding 200 m.
According to data obtained from five (5) GNSS stations, which measure the deformation of the volcano surface, no significant changes were observed. The lengths of control lines that cross the volcano have slight variations at rates of no more than 0.3 cm / month, suggesting that there is no significant change in the internal dynamics of the volcano. The data provided by two (2) inclinometers show no significant variations in the morphology of the volcano.

No emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere in the volcano area have been reported, according to data published by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) Sulfur Dioxide Group (http://so2 .gsfc.nasa.gov /) and NESDIS (http://satepsanoine.nesdis.noaa.gov).
No thermal alerts were reported in the area associated with the volcano according to data processed by Mirova Infrared Observation (http://www.mirovaweb.it/).
Volcanic activity during the period remained at low levels, with seismicity of small size, similar to the previous period. On the surface, there remains a weak fumarole activity, without recording of explosions. However, the volcanic system continues to exhibit activity above its threshold base, which, in conjunction with tornillos-type earthquake recording, suggests changes in the dynamics of hydrothermal fluids and / or magmatics fluids , which allows us to deduce the possibility of the appearance of new phreatic phases of explosive and / or phreato-magmatic type with a higher intensity of the currently active craters.
Note: It is recommended as a preventive measure to apply access restrictions in a zone close to the crater with a radius of 3 kilometers.
The volcanic alert remains at the level:
YELLOW LEVEL: changes in the behavior of volcanic activity – probable time for a rash: weeks / months.

Explosive eruption of the volcano began from about 01:30 UTC on 09 March, 2017. At 02:54 UTC on 09 March, the height of ash cloud was 7-8 km a.s.l.; ash plume drifted to the north-west from the volcano. The five large ash bursts occurred during one hour. Satellite data by KVERT showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano on 02-03 and 08-09 March; ash plume extended more 500 km to the north-west from the volcano on 09 March. Effusing of the lava flow occur at the north-western flank on the lava dome. Strong gas-steam activity of the volcano continues.

Over the past few hours, there has been an increase in the eruptive activity of the Fuego volcano, which was recorded by the seismic station FG3. The volcano observatory reports an average of 4 explosions per hour, 3 are of moderate character and 1 of intense character, generating ash plumes reaching a height of about 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) and moving southward and the Southwest for 20 kilometers. Falling of volcanic materials of different sizes at a distance of 300 meters was generated from the crater and moderate avalanches are constant.
Products of explosive activity, ash falls have been reported in the communities of Panimaché I and II, Morelia, Hagia Sophia, Villa Palo Verde, Sangre de Cristo, San Pedro Yepocapa and possibly others at a greater distance in this direction.
According to the observations of the seismic activity, the energy of the explosions is maintained, with the possibility that in the next hours a new strombolian eruptive phase will develop.
