Ubinas , Peru :

Ubinas is the most active volcano in Peru. The current eruptive process, which began in September 2013 and is continuing today, has reached a volcanic explosive index (IEV) of 2 on a scale of 0 to 8.
At present, the Ubinas volcano has shown a characteristic seismic and fumarolic increase, and is monitored by the OVS-PGI through a network of telemetry stations that send real-time information to the Cayma headquarters. Here is the summary of the activity between 01 and 15 February 2017.

Sismovolcanic monitoring:

Seismic activity in this period was dominated by events of the Tremor type, which are related to the disturbance of the water systems under the volcano by the presence of a body of magma, probably of low volume.
The sporadic ash emissions that occur on the Ubinas volcano are the result of the imbalance created by this magmatic body, which could also occasionally generate minor explosions.
On the other hand, hybrid earthquakes associated with magma uplift and VT type earthquakes have shown a 50% decrease compared to the previous period.
During this period, no explosive events were recorded.


Satellite tracking:
Thermal anomalies and SO2: The Mirova system (www.mirovaweb.it) did not detect any thermal anomalies for this period. In addition, the satellite system « EOS Aura » GSDM-NASA (http://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) did not detect any major anomalies during this fortnight.

 Visual control:
Between 01 and 15 February, it was recorded few cloudy days on the volcano Ubinas, which allowed a clear view since February 02, low-density ash emissions, sometimes accompanied by water vapor and gas bluish. The ash emissions did not exceed 1500 meters above the base of the crater.

Seismic activity during this period is dominated by Tremor seismic events associated with the disturbance of aquifer systems under the volcano, resulting from the influence of a magmatic body, probably of low volume. As a result of this imbalance, sporadic ash emissions occur.

Special volcanic activity report (REAV)

The National Geological and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) describes the following information obtained from monitoring equipment processed and analyzed at the South Andes Volcanological Observatory, a data interpretation center of the SERNAGEOMIN Volcanoes National Monitoring Network :

Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 03:26 local time (06:26 GMT), the monitoring stations installed near the volcanic complex Planchón-Peteroa, recorded one (1) earthquake associated with rock fracturing (tectonic volcano). The event was located 3.7 km north-northwest (NNW) of the main crater.

The localization obtained was as follows:
TIME OF ORIGIN: 03:26 hl (GMT -3)
LATITUDE: 35 ° 12 ’30 .6′ ‘South
LONGITUDE: 70 ° 34’54 .6  » West
DEPTH: 4,5 km


The event was preceded by a VT type earthquake of lower magnitude, and after the event, a lower magnitude replica was recorded. Furthermore, when the report was issued, the registration of the replicas ceased. There is no information from the authorities or the community about perceptions in neighboring areas.
The level of technical volcanic alert remains yellow.
SERNAGEOMIN continues to monitor online and report on changes in volcanic activity in the region in a timely manner.

Piton de la Fournaise , La Réunion :

The eruption begun on January 31, 2017 at 7:40 pm local time continues. The downward trend of the volcanic tremor (an indicator of surface eruptive intensity) observed over the past few days is confirmed (Figure 1).

– No seismicity was recorded during the day under the summit of Piton de la Fournaise.


– The resumption of inflation of the volcano in its summit area is confirmed. On the other hand, at lower altitudes (bottom and outside of the enclosure) no distortion is present.
Given the weather, no observations could be made on the ground during the day by the observatory teams.

Activity type: Vulcanian
Morphology: Stratovolcan composite
Geographical location: 14 ° 28’54˝ Latitude N; 90 ° 52’54˝ longitude W.
Height: 3,763msnm.
Conditions: cloudy
Wind: Northeast 0 km / h
Rainfall: 0 mm.


22 explosions were reported, with weak and moderate characteristics, which generated columns of gray ash at a height of about 4,400 meters (14,435 feet) traveling 10 km to the south and southwest. 37 low and moderate rumblings are reported, some with low shock waves, as well as sounds like the turbine of an airplane, with intervals of three minutes. Incandescent pulses at a height of 200 meters generate weak and moderate avalanches on the outline of the crater.
