Current eruption in Enclos Fouque on the northern flank of the volcano.

Despite some fluctuations, the volcanic tremor (indicator of eruptive intensity surface) is relatively stable for 48 hours. Remember that the evolution of this parameter downward as well as rise, can change quickly depending on the depth supply variations.
Field observations of September 15, 2016: The remarks made this morning by teams of OVPF show that the two volcanic cones that formed on the lower part of the eruptive fissures were beginning to gather. The northernmost cone is always broken to the north, from which escape the lava flows to the North East. These flows are focused on a main channel, the active part at 9:00 am this morning (local time) was located midway between the Piton Partage and the Nez Coupe Sainte Rose.
In the afternoon, a significant increase in the height of the lava fountains was observed (high estimate of 40-60m). This is due certainly to the closure of the cone most in the South , the activities is now focusing on a single cone.

No significant deformation was recorded during the day. Three volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded in the area of the Enclos this morning.
Due to the cloud cover on the eastern flank of the volcano , no records of the flow front on the large broken slopes has been made these past two days.

Weekly bulletin of activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 6 September to 12 September 2016
The level of activity continues at:
Activity level Yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:
During the past week, various monitoring parameters, show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano remains unstable.
Seismic activity related to the fracturing of rocks in the volcanic edifice showed an increase in number of earthquakes and in their energy level compared to the previous week. This type of seismicity is mainly located in the northern sector of the volcanic structure, at 5.2 km from the Arenas crater, and to a lesser extent in areas South, Southwest and Southeast of the crater. The depths of seismic events were between 0.3 and 7.5 km. The occurrence of minor seismic increase, recorded on 08 and 09 September , which was located in the northern sector, at depths between 4.3 and 6.5 km is recorded. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 2.9 ML (local magnitude), which corresponds to two earthquakes recorded on 8 September, during the seismic increase at 2:29 and 3:08 (local time) at depths of 4.6 and 4.4 km, respectively.
Regarding seismicity associated with fluid dynamics in volcanic conduits, it was characterized by the recording of episodes of continuous volcanic tremors of varying energy levels, long-period earthquakes and pulses of volcanic tremors, which are mainly located in the vicinity of Arenas crater and in the south east of it. Some ash emissions in the atmosphere associated with these events have been confirmed through cameras installed in the Volcano area and / or reports made by officials of the National Natural Park of Los Nevados (Pnnn) and members of the Service Colombian geological (QMS) on a mission in the region. It is important to note that the ash emission process can occur over several days and sometimes several times a day, without involving an individual report for each episode.
It is not excluded the registration of such seismic signals and the occurrence of events with higher energy levels, which can be associated with significant emissions of gas and ash into the atmosphere, the dispersion depends on wind conditions that prevail in the area.
The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images to track changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano, respectively, continued to record changes.
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as it was felt by the permanent stations SCANDOAS installed in the Volcano area and on satellite imagery. In monitoring the satellite images provided by the site Mirova, no thermal anomaly has been identified.
The column of gas, steam and ash from time to time, reached a maximum height of 2000 m above the top of the volcano, on September 11. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in compliance with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest of the volcano, promoting the dispersion of the ashes on the located populations in these directions with respect to the volcanic structure.

Significant recent activity in recent weeks:
Three important developments have taken place in recent weeks:
1 / Temperature increase at the level of the crater (5980 m). The Mirova system (Universities of Turin and Florence) was detected in July and August, an increase in temperature which results in PRV values which have reached 0.7 megawatts, one of the largest recorded value of this volcano.
2 / The increased intensity in 2 areas of fumaroles , outside the crater on the flanks of the volcano.
Satellite images dating from August 2014 and others since May 2016 showed the formation of two new areas where intense fumaroles on the Northwest and North sides Sabancaya are issued. The first zone is located on the northwest side and extends to the vicinity of the crater up to 5700 meters, while the second area is located on the north side of the volcano, about an altitude of 5600 m. These two fumarolics areas follow a north-south orientation.
3 / Explosion of 27.08.2016. Overall, the seismicity in the region of Sabancaya was fracture type having a major influence on the local tectonics. A notable example was the recent earthquake of M 5.3 in the area of Ichupampa, with its epicenter 25 km from the volcano. However, in very similar areas near the crater in recent months, it is highlighted the persistence of hybrid-type earthquakes, representing the ascent of magma material near the surface . Indeed, on August 27 at 6:51:55 local time, there was an important signal of hybrid type which, when analyzed, is an explosion of 72 MJ (megajoules) of energy on the Sabancaya . This is the first explosion in 2016 on the volcano. Most likely a phreatic explosion type with fine solid emissions (ash) which should have been spread near the top of the volcano.
The satellite system Mirova detected since the last week of July, an increased of temperatures at the level of the crater.
The two major areas of fumaroles emissions outside the crater, which were detected by satellite since August 2014, show an increased intensity of their emissions. These areas are located on the north side of the volcano and are oriented northwest–southeast.
After an increase of events hybrid type , on August 27 at 6:51 local time, there was an explosion of 72 MJ of energy on the Sabancaya. This explosion, probably phreatic type, is the first in 2016.

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano registered 307 low-intensity exhalations, with emissions of gas, steam and ash, three explosions, one yesterday at 14:08 h , and two today at 03:04 and 05:16 h , 144 minutes of harmonic tremor and three volcanotectonic event yesterday at 14:49, 14:57 y 15:11 h, with magnitude Mc 1.9, 2.6 y 1.7 respectively.
The cloudy conditions not allow observing the volcano continuously, but we observed an emission of steam and gas that the winds carried to the northwest . Along some lapses of the night was observed incandescence, increasing with main exhalations .
From dawn and up to the time of this report the cloudy condition allow to observe the crater and we observed that the wind carry the emission to the northwest .
CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments .
This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.
