The National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) describes the following information achieved by the surveillance equipment processed and analyzed by the Volcanological Observatory of Southern Andes, interpretation of the data center from the national volcano monitoring network:
Over the past three days, there has been an increase in seismic activity under the volcano Calbuco, represented by the recording of a total of 161 events related to the fracturing of cortical material (VT type ), which were located on the volcanic edifice, at a distance of 1 to 4 km NW of the active crater and at 8-10 km depth.

Similarly, in the last period, there was an upward variation of the electronic inclinometer records (equipment for measuring deformation of the crust), located 4.5 kilometers west of the crater, which represents a cumulative increase of 60 mrad, suggesting an inflationary process.
The above observations suggest the activities of a deep magma chamber that would lead to increased seismic activity and crustal deformation. It is therefore concluded that the volcanic system is unbalanced, beyond its basic level. Therefore, the level of technical alarm is raised to alert level yellow, with particular attention to its evolution

Under these conditions, is considered as high risk zone the area immediately near the main crater, less than 2 km, and it is recommended to limit the access of this zone.

Cayambe , Ecuador :

The Geophysical Institute detected a seismic anomaly under the Cayambe volcano.

The Geophysical Institute (IG) and the National Polytechnic School of Ecuador reported on June 22 that since the beginning of the month, was detected a seismic anomaly under the Cayambe volcano, about 60 kilometers northeast of Quito, the most intense disruption since 1995.
Although this anomaly « tends to decrease,«  remains on the base level set in 1995 to the volcano, said the IG in a special report published on June 22 . They underlined that seismic events detected in Cayambe are related to the breaking of rocks inside and small tremors are located in the extreme northeast of the volcano.

Earthquakes are distal volcano-tectonic type and occur in areas of geological faults near volcanoes, which, in the case of Cayambe, correspond to Chingual fault system, which passes through the region, said the IG. However, the institute said the global positioning system measurements (GPS) and inclinometers located on the volcano « show no signs of deformation of the volcano«  that could « indicate the presence of a magmatic intrusion. »

Cayambe is an active volcano located in the northern part of the Royal Andes of Ecuador, at whose feet lies the town of the same name with a population of 20 000 inhabitants.
The summit of this volcano is formed by domes, the westernmost of those is at a maximum height of 5790 meters and has an ice cap that starts at 4800 meters, with an approximate area of 22 square kilometers, the report of IG said . It also notes that over the past 4000 years, were identified at least 21 eruptive events, the last of which is presented between 1785 and 1786 according to historical and geological studies.
« Statistically Cayambe volcano has a recurrence period of about 200 years between eruptions, » says the study.




Popocatepetl , Mexico :

Popocatepetl volcano had 479 exhalations and three explosions

Santiaguito volcano continues its phase of high activity, this afternoon (yesterday) at 1:37 p.m., he again recorded strong explosion, generating moderate to heavy avalanches on its southeast and southwest flanks. The seismic station recorded the loud explosion, as well as low-moderate explosions and lowering a strong avalanches.
The explosion produced an ash plume from a height of about 4500 meters. (14.763 ft) to the south and southwest. This explosion has made no fallout or pyroclastic flows. The ash column was observed very thick, but included little material.
Santiaguito volcanic complex is in a high eruptive phase, so that similar or stronger events can be generated in the hours and \ or days. So, do not stay near the volcanic complex because it can generate pyroclastic flows of equal or greater intensity.


Therefore, INSIVUMEH recommends:
A CONRED, to take the necessary precautions, the implementation of the state deems necessary precautions near the volcanic complex.
A Directorate General of Civil Aviation, to take precautions with air traffic as ash move to the South and the Southwest at a height of 4500 meters above sea level, with the potential to be transported over greater distances.
