Indonesia’s tallest active volcano Mount Kerinci on the border of the Sumatran provinces of Jambi and West Sumatra spewed hot volcanic cloud towering more than 800 meters from its crater on Sunday (05/06), officials said.
The volatile volcano — towering at 3,805 meters above sea level — has been showing increasing activities since a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the Eastern coast of Sumatra on Thursday, with small volcanic quakes recorded.
“On Monday morning, Mount Kerinci was clearly visible. It spews out a greyish cloud 800 meters high from the top of the crater with the wind blowing to Northwest,” chief of the volcano’s observation Indra Saputra told Antara news agency.

The Vulcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Agency (PVMBG) has established a three kilometer exclusion zone.
Located in the remote part of Sumatra — 138 kilometers Southeast of West Sumatra capital Padang — National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the eruption has not posed any real danger to surrounding villages.

But officials are monitoring the volcano closely with its activities “continue to rise.”
“Mount Kerinci is Sumatra’s tallest mountain … volcanic clouds could reach airplane’s cruising altitude and disrupt flights,” he said.
“People [around the volcano] are still safe … but officials have prepared a contingency plan in case the eruption in Mount Kerinci escalates.”

Poas , Costa Rica :

Small steam explosion in the lake ultra acid of the active crater.



Yesterday, June 5, 2016, occurred between 9 am and 10 am a small steam explosion (phreatic eruption or hydrothermal explosion) in the ultra-acidic lake of Poas volcano. The explosion formed a column of water, sediment and vapor in the lake, which reached about 20 to 30 meters high. The shape of the column was « cipressoidale«  (in the form of cypress).

Since May 28, 2016, the OVSICORI-A has noticed an increase in the strength of underwater fumaroles that are below the lake as well as a change in the color of the lake, from a milky green to gray milky with many floating molten sulfur to the surface.


Recent changes in the lake from the end of May 2016 and the small explosion of steam yesterday morning indicate processes in the magmatichydrothermal system promoting greater interaction water-gas hot rock (or water -Gasmagma) and a flow of hot fluid to the deepest levels of the active crater.



The broad, well-vegetated edifice of Poás, one of the most active volcanoes of Costa Rica, contains three craters along a N-S line. The frequently visited multi-hued summit crater lakes of the basaltic-to-dacitic volcano, which is one of Costa Rica’s most prominent natural landmarks, are easily accessible by vehicle from the nearby capital city of San José.



A North-South-trending fissure cutting the 2708-m-high complex stratovolcano extends to the lower northern flank, where it has produced the Congo stratovolcano and several lake-filled maars. The southernmost of the two summit crater lakes, Botos, is cold and clear and last erupted about 7500 years ago. The more prominent geothermally heated northern lake, Laguna Caliente, is one of the world’s most acidic natural lakes, with a pH of near zero.



It has been the site of frequent phreatic and phreatomagmatic eruptions since the first historical eruption was reported in 1828. Eruptions often include geyser-like ejections of crater-lake water.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

In the last 24 hours the seismic records of the surveillance system at Popocatépetl volcano recorded an episode of continuous exhalations and explosions, yesterday between 11:35 and 22:30 h. It was accompanied by ash emissions with height up to 1.5 km above the crater, being dispersed towards east-northeast. No reports of ashfalls have been received yet. Today at 05:20 h a moderate explosion occurred, throwing incandescent fragments on the north face and producing an ash column of 1.5 km that was displaced towards east .



Later, only incandescence was observed above the crater . Also 72 low intensity exhalations and 41 minutes of low-amplitude harmonic tremor were observed. At this moment the summit cannot be seen due to dense clouds, however during early hours a small steam-and-gas emission was observed .

CENAPRED emphasizes that people SHOULD NOT go near the volcano, especially near the crater, due to the hazard caused by ballistic fragments .

This type of activity is included within the scenarios Volcanic Traffic Light Yellow Phase 2.

Turrialba, Costa Rica :

Activity report of the Turrialba volcano

The Turrialba volcano since June 4 at 0330 has declined its level of seismic activity. Right now, the seismic activity of the volcano was dominated mainly by the appearance of tremor of low amplitude (<150 nm / s).
At dawn, a plume of steam and gas of about 500 meters above the summit is observed.
The stations of the National Meteorological Institute IMN, located at the top of the Irazu volcano (3331 m) and Turrialba (3343 m) indicate that the wind direction is north.



Yesterday and in the morning hours of today there has not been received reports of  ash fall  or sulfur odor perception

Volcanic tremors: seismic signal generated by the vibration produced by the passage of fluids (gas, water, or magma) into cracks and ducts inside the volcano.
