Weekly bulletin of activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 15 February to 22 February 2016
The level of activity continue at level : Activity Level Amarillo or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.
Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:
During the last week, the volcanic system continued to show unstable behavior. The recorded seismic activity was mainly associated with rock fracturing in the volcanic structure. This type of seismicity was located mainly in the North distal sector (7.9 kilometers away from the crater) and, less numerous and scattered, in areas of the North, North East and South West of the Arenas crater. The depths of earthquakes during the week ranged from 0.6 to 7.9 km. The biggest event of the week was 2.9 ML (local magnitude), on February 17 at 5:22 p.m. (local time), located north of Arenas crater at a depth of 6.38 km.
The volcano presented on 23 February 2 ash emissions, the first quickly scattered by the wind, at 5:14 p.m. local, the second at 9:19 p.m. local, who was accompanied by expulsion of incandescent material.
Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics inside volcanic conduits, was characterized by the occurrence of earthquakes long period (LP), short pulses of tremors and episodes of continuous volcanic tremors to short duration and low energy levels. These seismic signals were mainly located near the Arenas crater and in the South and Southeast of the volcano area. These processes were accompanied by small ash emissions limited near the crater.
The volcanic deformation measured from electronic inclinometers, global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite images, which record changes in the tilt, the position and shape of the volcano (respectively) during the last period evaluated showed some changes.
The volcano continues to emit into the atmosphere large amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2) which is distinguished, as has been estimated by the permanent stations SCAN DOAS installed in the region of the volcano and satellite imagery.
The gas column of steam and ash reached a height of 850 meters above the summit of the volcano on February 21, the direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the prevailing wind in the area, which during the week showed a predominant direction towards the northwest over the volcano.
It is considered that the volcanic system continues to evolve. No new events that may indicate an acceleration of the process, involving greater instability of it and therefore the change in the level of activity is present. While the instability of the volcano covers more than five years, it is essential not to get used to a seemingly monotonous behavior of the volcano and monitoring official information to be published by the Colombian Geological Service.

In the last 24 hours, three explosions were recorded on the Momotombo volcano, for a total of 56 explosions since the volcanic activity resumed.
The strongest explosion of this period took place at 2:16
In which was emitted ash and incandescent material on the East and North sides of the volcano. The other 02 explosions were relatively low, and occurred at 1:59 and 10:21 today.
Seismic amplitude in real time (RSAM) of Momotombo is low, between 25 and 75 units.

Yesterday afternoon the staff of INTER made a new field visit to the volcano and observed that the vents on the floor of the crater Santiago are becoming larger due to small landslides of their walls.
They also managed to see the mouth located in the northeast of the crater, which sporadically expels small lava streams, which is a normal process in the conditions in which this volcano is located.
At 4:28 p.m. yesterday, a small earthquake in the caldera of the Masaya volcano, which by its low magnitude could not be located.
Seismic amplitude volcanic tremor of real-time (RSAM) remains very high values between 250 and 940 units.

A micro-seismic activity remained high, with the appearance of small gas explosions inside the volcano.
A fairly strong glow in the crater floor shows the presence of lava near the active vents.

During this period it was possible to locate 02 earthquakes, the first was magnitude M1,2 at 17:15 yesterday, and the second of magnitude M 1.1 occurred at 9:27 today.

Yesterday at 09:24 am, a magnitude 2.3 M earthquake was recorded, located north of the volcano, home to local faults.
This earthquake did not affect the behavior (relative calm) presented by this volcano.

The activity that is present on the volcanoes Momotombo , Santiago, Masaya and Telica, are maintained within normal limits and so far do not represent any danger to communities that are located in the surrounding areas.
Armando Saballos, volcanologist of the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER) has provided detailed information on each of these experiencing activity in recent weeks, being constantly monitored by domestic and foreign scientists.
Saballos said that in the case of the Momotombo volcano, in general, its explosions are not very large and do not pose a great danger to the population, we hope it will be, obviously, we maintain continuous surveillance of the volcano.

Regarding the Masaya volcano, Tuesday, scientists made observations in its crater and two apertures were noted, their walls have been eroded, resulting in an enlargement. Saballos said magma movement is strong and continuous, which resulted in the formation of another small opening. Record new vents on the crater floor is positive, allowing the gas outlet and the pressure is released. « At the moment it is not a major threat to the population.«
For the Telica volcano the teams of INETER have seen a high micro seismicity, caused by the appearance of small gas explosions that are causing a small opening on the crater floor.
« It is possible that over time, in the short term, within days or weeks, which is not alarming and was seen several times on the Telica volcano, magma is present in the crater floor and maybe a small lava lake will form, but does not represent a great danger. It is a system that is open and in a sense, it is best to be open, it avoids the increasing of the pressure.
For the San Cristobal volcano, he said there was no explosion, but emissions in small quantities, which when added to the energy of the sun, producing a gas white cloud not dangerous. « no seismic record, there is nothing unusual about the San Cristobal« concluded Saballos.

Dated on 02.26.2016, the Sinabung had an eruption that took place at 08.53 h. The flow is lowered over a distance of 3,000 m to the east–southeast, the ash plume rose to a height of 3000 m. The wind was to the west–southwest. The earthquake of emission lasted for 399 seconds.
Based on satellite images, ground reports, and information from PVMBG, the Darwin VAAC reported that during 18 and 20-23 February ash plumes from Sinabung rose to altitudes of 3-5.5 km (10,000-18,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted as far as 55 km S, SW, W, and NW.

This is a notice of increasing seismic activity of Bulusan Volcano. A total of forty-nine (49) volcanic earthquakes were recorded by the seismic monitoring network during the past 24 hours. The increased seismic activity may be precursory to minor steam-driven or phreatic eruptions occurring at the currently active west-northwest, northwest, southwest or summit vents, based on past behavior of the volcano. Steaming activity could not be observed due to thick clouds covering the summit.
Ash soars above Bulusan volcano after a recent blast. The Philippines’ Bulusan volcano spewed ash high above the south end of Luzon Island in a blast fueled by a buildup of steam inside the towering mountain. The four-minute eruption was the first since a blast last June produced a similar ash plume.
Precise leveling survey results from December 2-7, 2015 indicated slight inflationary changes of the volcano’s edifice relative to September 2015, consistent with ground deformation measurements from continuous GPS data since August 2015.
Alert Level 1 (abnormal) remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano.
