Update ETNA, December 4, 2015 16:00 UTC
The second episode of paroxysm from the Voragine crater in less than 36 hours peaked 08 h 00 at 09:00 UTC (local time = -1), with high lava fountains and an eruption column that has reached the height of at least 7 km above the summit of the volcano in about 10-15 minutes after the beginning of the paroxysm phase. The photo on the left, by Boris Behncke (INGV–Osservatorio Etneo) shows the eruption column from Misterbianco, on the south side at 8:38.
After 9:00, the explosive activity has gradually declined to sporadic ash emissions in the afternoon of 4 December 2015. The paroxysm was accompanied by frequent emissions of gray ash – brown in the new pit crater that is recently opened on top of the eastern flank of the cone of the New Southeast Crater (NCSE). These emissions were continuing while this update is published.
There remains a strong volcanic tremor amplitude, which corresponds with the paroxysm of the morning, which reached a higher peak than that associated with the frenzy of the night. In the dark of night, we observe sporadic strombolian explosions from Voragine and from the pit crater,on the upper side Eastern NCSE.
The coarse pyroclastic material was deposited on the upper West side of the volcano, above 2000 m, while ash fall occurred in the eastern district of Giarre – Zafferana.

Bromo Volcanic Monitoring Post (PPGA) head M. Syafii, Mt. Bromo’s volcanic activity had increased in recent days. Meanwhile, earth tremors had increased since Thursday night.
« The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center [PVMBG] then raised the status today, » Syafii said as quoted by Antara news agency on Friday.Visually, Syafii said, Mt. Bromo was producing white ash clouds with moderate thickness and low pressure, rising from the west to the southwest at a height of 50 to 150 meters.
Due to the increased alert status, Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) banned tourists from visiting Mt. Bromo sites and restricted people’s activities to a safe distance of 2.5 kilometers away from the volcano. « We closed the calderas such as Bromo crater, Pasir Berbisik and the savanna to all tourist activities because Mt. Bromo’s status was raised to Alert 3,” said TNBTS head Ayu Dewi Utari.
However, Ayu said that people could still enjoy the beauty of sunrise from Mt. Penanjakan, Setya Peak and Cinta Peak, which were still included within the TNBTS area. « Entry to Mt. Pananjakan is open from Wonokitri, Pasuruan, while the entrances from Malang and Probolinggo are closed as the trail crosses the whispering sand, » Ayu added.
