Activity Bulletin Tuesday, August 25 9:00

The eruption that began on August 24, 2015 at 18:50 continues.

A long crack is established. Its opening began near the Crater Rivals then propagated up towards the top.
6:59 p.m.: opening further upstream
8:09 p.m.: further upstream still
Around 9:15 p.m. / 9:30 p.m. opening a crack in the northwest. Under the Bory.
The fountains were quite high in general, the flow is strong and progression of lava were fast.

Situation yesterday morning:

In the evening, the fountains upstream stopped. At present only the lower crack (near the crater Rivals) seems to be still active (but this is to check in situ).
The seismic energy (RSAM) decreased (by a factor of 4 over the nearest station) overnight.
The head flow is not located at this time because it’s left the camera field late in the evening.
Four earthquakes were detected in the night

About the above graph:

The graph uses the UTC time
The first peak on the left corresponds to the seismic crisis preceding the eruption.
Start eruption: 6:50 p.m. local time is 2:50 p.m. UTC
Start of the graph: 17h00 local UTC or 1:00 p.m.

End of the graph: 25/08 , 9:00 local or 5:00   UTC

Activity Bulletin Tuesday, August 25 16:30 (local time)

The eruption that began on August 24, 2015 at 18:50 continues.

The intensity of the eruption tremor has decreased since the beginning of the eruption. Firstly very rapidly during the first two hours, then more slowly.
No earthquake has been observed since the bulletin of this morning 6:45.
The first analyzes of satellite images also show a rapid decrease in the lava flow (between 30 and 60 m3s-1 last night washing and less than 10 m3s-1 that morning).

A large part of the Enclos is covered by a plume of sulfur dioxide that the team of the Atmosphere Laboratory and Cyclones observed using a Lidar vertically above the OVPF (Bourg Murat ). The panache of 600 m thick was detected between 2100 and 2700 m from the vent.

Returns information from people on the ground confirm these measures and specify that decrease in the intensity of the phenomenon was significant at the end of the night.

Only a crack, 100 m long is active at present. In its upstream point, a small cone was built to 140 meters east of the sign installed by the ONF to locate the crater Rivals. Rhythmic projections escape from the edifice under construction. Further downstream, three fountains also continue to operate.

Due to bad weather conditions including rain strong enough passages of midday, the team of the OVPF could not make lava flows samples . Specimens of projections from lava fountains have nevertheless been made as well as gas samples. For the same reasons in the absence of aerial photographs we are not able to achieve a precise mapping of flows and have no knowledge of the current position of the lava front.

Tungurahua, Ecuador :

This morning (yesterday), there were three explosions from Tungurahua volcano that caused the emission of ash and windows vibration in nearby towns. According to the expert Santiago Santamaría, from the Observatorio del Tungurahua (OVT), ash falls reports in cities like Pillate, Juive Grande Chontapamba, among others have been published. There are also reports of « rain » of volcanic dust in the canton of Quero. « Yesterday, a special report on this volcano in which cautioned against an increase of activity was issued. We continue monitoring and analyzing its behavior, » Santamaria said.

The statement from the IGEPN:

The volcano maintains a moderate to strong activity.

Seismicity: 3 volcano-tectonic events (VT), 44 long period events (LP) and 5 explosions were recorded.
During the morning, five explosions were recorded and these were felt by the surrounding cities of the volcano.
Ash falls were reported by the populations of Chontapamba, Bilbao and Jewish, also in the agglomeration of Pillate.
You could see a cloud rising with a load of moderate to high ash westward to about 2 km high.
Rains and lahars:
Rain at the top of the volcano, without generating lahars are recorded.

Vesuvius, Italy :

About the « news » regarding a imminent recovery of activity of Vesuvius:

Vesuvius is sleeping deeply, and no scientist has recently published scientific articles that speak of a future eruption of the volcano. The only volcano in the Naples area that shows signs of low malaise is Campi Flegrei caldera , but at a very limited level compared to the dramatic crisis of land uplift and seismic activity in 1970 and 1983 to 1984.

Let’s stop spreading « information » (or disinformation) that serve only to create fear, anxiety, terror. It is necessary, there is still time, to deepen the information, education, dialogue. We need to know the problems and ways to solve them, and fear is not a solution.
