WEEKLY NEWSLETTER from November 01, 2021 to November 07, 2021 (issue date November 09, 2021)

SUMMARY STATEMENT OF ACTIVITY

In view of the monitoring data, it is highlighted:
1) Temperature of the fumaroles of the crater: The temperatures recorded on the edge of the crater increase slightly while they seem stable on the internal face.
2) CO2 flux in the crater area: Continuous flux measurements show high values in line with those acquired during the last period.
3) SO2 flow in the crater area: SO2 flow occurs at a high level of degassing
4) Geochemistry of fumarolic gases: No update is available. The last sample of 10/17/2021 indicated a strong contribution of magmatic gases to the fumaroles of the crater.

5) CO2 fluxes at the base of the La Fossa cone and in the Vulcano Porto area: very high CO2 flux values in the sites of Rimessa, C. Sicilia and Palizzi (P4max); values down compared to the last week on the Faraglione site
6) Geochemistry of thermal aquifers: temperature and conductivity values slightly increasing in the C. Sicilia well; the temperatures recorded are anyway on very high values while the conductivity on very low values; in the Bambara well, the level remains constant, while the conductivity continues to increase.
7) Local seismicity: A slight decrease in high frequency seismicity continues; there is a marked decrease in the rate of occurrence of VLP events.
8) Regional seismicity: Absence of fracturing seismicity associated with earthquakes with Ml> = 1.0.
9) Deformations – GNSS: GNSS data show that after the strong variations recorded between mid-September and mid-October, during the last week there were no significant deformations
10) Deformations – Inclinometry: The inclinometric network shows that after the variations recorded between September 13 and October 10, there are no significant variations.
11) Other observations: A variation was recorded from 3:45 p.m. UTC on November 6, observed only in the VSOCR station, probably of local type and linked to the dynamics of the aquifer. There are no changes with characteristics similar to those observed in the previous weeks.

TEMPERATURE OF FUMEROLLES FROM THE CRATER.
The signals acquired by the Vulcra station have been characterized during the last week by a strong noise caused by the repeated rains; this made the data validation discontinuous; the maximum temperature channel (T_2) recorded maximum values around 375 ° C. The temperatures continuously monitored on the internal side (Vulcra2 station) are appreciably stable around 110 ° C.

SO2 FLOW INTO THE CRATER ZONE.
The total SO2 flux emitted by the Vulcano fumarolic field measured by the FLAME-DOAS scanner network, since mid-September, has indicated values at a high level and above the typical degassing of the Vulcano SO2 flux (20- 30 t / d). The average daily values recorded over the last week are stable at a high level of ~ 180 t / d with intra-daily values up to ~ 200 t / d.
From the beginning of October, the flow shows a gradual upward trend.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

November 10, 2021, 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last press release, 113 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja, 5 of these earthquakes were felt by the population, having reached the maximum intensity of III-IV (EMS98) in the epicentral area .
The most important earthquake is the one which occurred today at 4:24 a.m. (UTC), with a magnitude of 3.7 mbLg at a depth of 14 km and felt with an intensity III-IV on the island of La Palma . In the period considered, 3 earthquakes were located at a depth of about 30 km, the rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, at about 12 km.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal continues at lower average levels with an intensification peak.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations continues to show that after reversing the inflation on November 4 and 5 at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers, it remains at a lower level than previously. established. On the other hand, the southwest deformation recorded in the station is still continuing.

In the rest of the stations, a slight deflation persisted, possibly linked to deep seismicity.
In view of the calibrated image, an eruptive column altitude of 1,800 m is estimated at 08:45 UTC, oriented towards the West. The altitude of the cone is measured by obtaining a value of 1,131 m at sea level.

Lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma again reached the Atlantic Ocean overnight, after reaching Los Guirres beach on Tuesday, the Transport Ministry reported on Wednesday. The seismicity associated with the eruptive process has increased sharply in recent hours, especially at depths greater than 20 kilometers. The largest earthquake was an M 4.8, recorded at a depth of 34 kilometers at Villa de Mazo.

Scientists who follow the evolution of the eruption of the La Palma volcano have observed in recent hours a small rise in seismicity at great depths and the emission of sulfur dioxide, two of the volcanic monitoring variables that have been analyzed. Seismicity at depths greater than 20 kilometers has recorded an increase in recent hours, both in number and magnitude.

In fact, this morning there was an earthquake of 4.8 (mbLg) which was felt with a maximum intensity of IV on the islands of La Palma and El Hierro. Likewise, the emission of sulfur dioxide, associated with the volcanic plume of the current eruptive process in progress (visible emanations of volcanic gases), recorded yesterday continues to be high, with a range of values between 31,000 and 43,000 tonnes. per day through remote optical sensors of the miniDOAS type in maritime mobile position.

Philippines , Taal :

TAAL VOLCANO BULLETIN 11 November 2021 8:00 AM

In the past 24-hour period, the Taal Volcano Network recorded two hundred twenty-three (223) volcanic earthquakes, including one hundred eighty (180) volcanic tremor events having durations of one (1) to two (2) minutes, forty-three (43) low-frequency volcanic earthquakes, and low-level background tremor that has persisted since 7 July 2021. Activity at the Main Crater was dominated by upwelling of hot volcanic fluids in its lake which generated plumes 1500 meters tall that drifted southwest and south-southwest. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission averaged 10,280 tonnes/day on 10 November 2021. Based on ground deformation parameters from electronic tilt, continuous GPS and InSAR monitoring, Taal Volcano Island has begun inflating in August 2021 while the Taal region continues to undergo very slow extension since 2020.

PHIVOLCS reported that a series of volcanic earthquakes at Taal began at 0347 on 3 November and lasted for two minutes based on the seismic data; the events were felt at Intensity I in Banyaga, Agoncillo, and Batangas, and the largest event was a local M 2.9. The events were accompanied by a series of four short-lived plumes that rose less than 1 km above the lake. The characteristics of the seismic signals were similar to the phreatic bursts recorded in July. Upwelling hot volcanic fluids were visible in the crater lake during 3-9 November, and gas-and-steam plumes rose 0.9-1.8 km above the lake and drifted mainly SW. Sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 4,877-19,463 tonnes/day. Low-level background tremor continued along with as many as 111 volcanic earthquakes per day during 2-3 and 5-9 November and as many as 85 low-frequency volcanic earthquakes per day during 2-3 and 7-8 November. There were also 6-40 daily episodes of volcanic tremor, each lasting between 1 and 19 minutes. The Volcano Alert Level remained at a 2 (on a scale of 0-5). PHIVOLCS reminded the public that the entire Taal Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) and that boating on Taal Lake was prohibited.

Chile , Copahue :

During the period, 11 classified volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded, associated with fragile rupture processes in volcanic systems. The most energetic earthquake had a local magnitude (ML) value of 1.2 and was located 10.5 km northeast of the active crater, with a depth of 5.5 km.
In addition, 1 long period (LP) type earthquake was recorded, associated with the internal dynamics of fluids in the volcanic system; the size of the earthquake valued from the Reduced Displacement (DR) parameter was equal to 2.3 cm2
. Finally, 2 earthquakes related to the movement of fluids at very low frequency (VLP) were recorded, the largest of which had a reduced displacement of 18 cm2 and a dominant frequency of 0.36 Hz.

The aforementioned data that describes volcanic activity suggests a low energy state of the surface system and in this context, the occurrence of episodes impacting a larger area than that previously recorded is less likely. According to what has been observed during the previous phases, the volcanic system could experience temporary increases in surface activity with the emission of gases and particles which, depending on their power and dispersion, can be considered in correspondence with the current alert level.

Consequently, the volcanic technical alert is maintained in: GREEN TECHNICAL ALERT: Active volcano with stable behavior – No immediate risk.

Observation: The area close to the active crater within a radius of 500 m is considered to be an impacted zone.

Japan , Sakurajima :

JMA reported that incandescence from Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) was visible at night during 1-8 November. An eruption at 2225 on 2 November produced a plume that rose 1.1 km above the crater rim and drifted SW. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was 1,000 tons per day on 4 November. Very small eruptions were detected during 5-8 November. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and residents were warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

The Aira caldera in the northern half of Kagoshima Bay contains the post-caldera Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan’s most active. Eruption of the voluminous Ito pyroclastic flow accompanied formation of the 17 x 23 km caldera about 22,000 years ago. The smaller Wakamiko caldera was formed during the early Holocene in the NE corner of the Aira caldera, along with several post-caldera cones. The construction of Sakurajima began about 13,000 years ago on the southern rim of Aira caldera and built an island that was finally joined to the Osumi Peninsula during the major explosive and effusive eruption of 1914. Activity at the Kitadake summit cone ended about 4850 years ago, after which eruptions took place at Minamidake. Frequent historical eruptions, recorded since the 8th century, have deposited ash on Kagoshima, one of Kyushu’s largest cities, located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km from the summit. The largest historical eruption took place during 1471-76.

Espagne / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

10 Novembre 2021 , 09h00 UTC.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

November 08, 2021, 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last communication, 42 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja, 6 of these earthquakes were felt by the population, having reached the maximum intensity in the epicentral zone of IV ( EMS98).
The most significant earthquake was the one that occurred at 8:40 p.m. (UTC) yesterday, with a magnitude of 4.5 mbLg at a depth of 36 km and felt with intensity IV on the island of La Palma. Over the period considered, 1 earthquake was located at a depth of about 30 km, the rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, at about 12 km.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal is at high average levels, with intensifying pulses.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows that the elevation recorded on days 4 and 5 at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers, has completely reversed. However, the southwest deformation recorded by the station is still in progress.

In the rest of the stations, a slight deflation persisted, possibly linked to deep seismicity.
In view of the calibrated image, a column height of 2,700 m is estimated at 08:45 UTC with a West-South-West direction.
Yesterday, the thermal and visual camera was moved from the north flank to the east of the volcano to continue the continuous acquisition of images in both spectra.

“This Saturday around 6:00 p.m., the lava emission rate increased and the flows that emerged from the south of the effusive focus are directed west on the previous flows. The lavas that continue to occupy the central sector occasionally overflow without affecting the new surfaces. In particular, we highlight the southwestern advance that extends north of the mountain of El Cogote, ”explained Carmen López, responsible for volcanic monitoring at the National Geographic Institute.

The eruption of the volcano Cumbre Vieja, on the island of La Palma, reached within hours of this Sunday 50 days of activity with no data indicating a near-term completion.

Lava continues to pass over previous flows, mainly through the central area and volcanic tubes, but without affecting new surfaces. There is only one advance of a lava flow to the southwest, which flows north of Cogote Mountain.
Seismicity continues to decrease, although it is possible that tremors felt by the population will continue to occur. The distortion recorded at Jedey’s station reversed.
The height of the ash diffusion cloud is 2,700 meters. Sulfur dioxide emissions are 10,000 tonnes per day, but have continued to decline since October 25.

Low-level eruptive activity continues. Seismicity remains elevated, and small explosions were more frequent over the past day compared to the previous week. Seismic tremor continues to be variable, with a several hour period of semi-regular tremor bursts observed, interspersed with more discontinuous activity. Satellite and web camera images were obscured by clouds, but very small ash clouds were likely generated by the explosive events.

Small explosions accompanied by low-level ash emissions could happen at any time, and are typically a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the summit. The level of unrest at Pavlof can change quickly and the progression to more significant eruptive activity can occur with little or no warning.

Pavlof is monitored by local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data, web cameras, and remote infrasound and lightning networks.

Espagne / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

08 Novembre 2021 , 09h00 UTC.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

November 06, 2021, 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last declaration, only 26 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja, one of these earthquakes was felt by the population, having reached the maximum intensity in the epicentral area of III-IV (EMS98).
The most significant earthquake is the one which occurred at 01:39 (UTC) today, with a magnitude of 4.0 mbLg at 11 km depth and felt with an intensity III-IV on the island of La Palma. In the period considered, 2 earthquakes were located at depths of about 30 km, the rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, about 12 km.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal is at low average levels, with intensifying pulses.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows an elevation of around 10 cm as well as a southwestward deformation between November 3 and 5 at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers.

On the other hand, at the most distant stations, a slight deflation was maintained, possibly linked to deep seismicity.
In view of the calibrated image, a column height of 2,500 m was estimated at 08:48 UTC with a West-South-West direction.

Today at 10:30 UTC, due to the decrease in the height of the eruptive column, IGN issued a new VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) message informing that the maximum height of the eruptive column was 2,700 m on sea level.

Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) Scientific Committee spokeswoman Carmen López said on Saturday that there was no scientific data indicating that the volcano’s eruption « in the short term » Cumbre Vieja, in La Palma, would end. “We have to be careful. What is useful are trends and trends need several days to be robust, ”López insisted. The seismic swarm continues the downward trend recorded during this week, although it remains active south of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

The Department of Homeland Security (DSN) published on Sunday on its official Twitter account its daily report on the situation of the Cumbre Vieja volcano, on the island of La Palma. This organism reminds us that the eruptive process continues and that the lava continues to flow towards the North-West, but without affecting new surfaces. « In general, all the flows are almost motionless, » explains the DSN, which also points out that the air quality is particularly unfavorable in the municipalities of Paso, Tazacorte, Puntagorda, Tijarafe and Los Llanos de Aridane.

All lava activity is confined within Halemaʻumaʻu crater in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Seismic activity and volcanic gas emission rates remain elevated.

Summit Observations:
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission rates remain high, with an emission rate for November 4, 2021, of approximately 1,700 tonnes per day. Summit tilt and GPS observations show no or minimal deformation over the past week. Earthquake activity remains below background and volcanic tremor remains elevated since the beginning of the eruption.

A telephoto image of the west vent in Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kīlauea. Ponded lava within the spatter cone supplies lava into the lava lake through the tubed-over spillway. The fast-moving lava stream is incandescent as it enters into the lava lake at the base of the cone. As the lava slows and cools, a thin crust begins to form on the surface (center right).

Halemaʻumaʻu Lava Lake Observations:
Lava continues to erupt from a single vent in the western wall of Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The western end of the lake showed a maximum elevation of approximately 799.5 meters (2623 ft) above sea level by HVO’s permanent laser rangefinder on November 5, 2021, which is about 1 m (3 ft) above the previous day, and a total increase of about 56 meters (184 ft) since lava emerged on September 29. The lava lake is not level across its surface due to the location of the vent on the western side. There is about 6 meters (20 feet) elevation difference between the active west and stagnant east part of the lake. The eastern edge of the lake is now level with and has begun to advance onto the lowest of the down-dropped blocks remaining from the 2018 collapse event. Field crews on November 4, 2021, observed roiling and low spattering in the lava pond within the western vent. The total erupted volume since the beginning of the eruption was estimated to be about 19.9 million cubic meters (5.3 billion gallons) on October 15.

Eruptive activity continues at the north crater of Mount Cerberus. Explosions and tremor were detected in seismic and infrasound data over the past day. Low-level ash emissions were observed in web camera data during periods of clear weather. High meteorological clouds obscured the volcano and no ash emissions were observed in satellite data rising above the meteorological cloud deck, which had an estimated cloud top altitude of 10,000 to 20,000 ft asl. The seismic and infrasound amplitudes of the explosions were typical of those observed during this eruption, suggesting that ash emissions were likely rising 5,000 to 10,000 ft asl.

Small eruptions producing minor ash deposits within the vicinity of the active north crater of Mount Cerberus and ash clouds usually under 10,000 feet above sea level have characterized the recent activity, which shows no signs of abating. Small explosions may continue to occur and could be difficult to detect, especially during poor weather conditions.

Semisopochnoi is monitored by local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data, web cameras, and remote infrasound and lightning networks.

Espagne / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

06 Novembre 2021 , 09h00 UTC.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

November 05, 2021, 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last declaration, 54 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja, 7 of these earthquakes were felt by the population, the maximum intensity having been reached in the epicentral zone IV (EMS98).
The most significant earthquake was the one that occurred at 23:05 (UTC) yesterday, with a magnitude of 4.5 mbLg at 35 km depth and felt with intensity IV on the island of La Palma. In the period considered, 4 earthquakes were located at depths of about 30 km, the rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, about 12 km.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal has low average levels, with intensifying pulses.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows a slight vertical deformation at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers. At the most remote stations, a slight deflation is maintained, possibly related to deep seismicity.
Based on the calibrated image, the ash cloud height of 3,500 m is estimated at 08:48 UTC. with a South-South-East direction.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) detected in the station closest to the eruptive centers of the volcano of La Palma a slight vertical deformation of the terrain. Carmen López, director of IGN’s Geophysical Observatory, points out that it is in no way comparable to the sudden 10-centimeter deformation detected 10 days ago, and which scientists then interpreted as a possible indication an increase in the lava channel or the opening or closing of an emission point.

The Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma is undergoing a change in its eruptive dynamics. Experts from the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) have detected sulfur deposits for the first time since the eruption began, which can be seen in yellow to the left of the image.

Experts say this is a sign that the magmatic component of the gas may decrease. This means that the temperature of the system is now lower than a few days ago, although this does not imply the end of the eruption, according to the spokesperson for the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan), David Calvo. “The system now has less deep intake, which implies a lower temperature. Once we do more analysis, we’ll know why.  »

Low-level eruptive activity continued throughout the week. Small explosions were detected intermittently in seismic and infrasound data over the past week and seismic tremor continues at fluctuating levels. During periods of clear weather, minor ash emissions were observed in web camera images. These weak emissions only rose a few hundred feet above the vent near the summit and quickly dissipated.

The explosions that have occurred during the current period of activity at Pavlof have been short-lived, with ash deposits confined to the flanks of the volcano. Eruptive activity is focused at a vent on the upper southeast flank of the volcano, near the location of the eruptive vent in 2007. The level of unrest at Pavlof can change quickly and the progression to more significant eruptive activity can occur with little or no warning.

Pavlof is monitored by local seismic and infrasound sensors, satellite data, web cameras, and remote infrasound and lightning networks.

Mexico , Popocatepetl :

November 05, 11:00 a.m. (November 05, 5:00 p.m. GMT)

During the last 24 hours, according to the monitoring systems of the Popocatépetl volcano, 19 exhalations accompanied by volcanic gases and light amounts of ash have been identified. In addition, 34 minutes of low amplitude tremor and two volcano-tectonic earthquakes were recorded yesterday at 3:27 pm and today at 1:52 am, with magnitudes of 1.6 and 2.1 respectively.

At the time of this report, the volcano is observed with an emission of water vapor, gas and light amounts of ash in an easterly direction.

Updated November 05 at 6:00 p.m. (November 06 at 00:00 GMT)

This Friday, November 5, with the support of the National Guard, expert staff from the Institute of Geology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the National Center for Disaster Reduction (CENAPRED), an overview of the Popocatépetl volcano was made to verify its morphology.

It has been possible to determine that the inner crater has an approximate diameter of 380 to 400 meters and a depth of 160 to 200 meters. The presence of a new lava body inside the crater could not be observed.

On the basis of the various monitoring parameters and the information obtained during the overflight, it is considered that the ash emissions will continue and that certain explosions which will not exceed those already observed in intensity. These scenarios are considered in the yellow level of phase 2 of the volcanic warning traffic light. Any change in activity will be reported in a timely manner.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

November 04, 2021; 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last declaration, 124 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja, 11 of these earthquakes were felt by the population, having reached the maximum intensity in the epicentral zone III-IV (EMS98) for three earthquakes.
The most significant earthquake was the one which occurred at 10:43 (UTC) yesterday, with a magnitude of 3.7 mbLg at a depth of 14 km and felt with an intensity III-IV on the island of La Palma. In the period considered, 8 earthquakes were located at depths of about 30 km, the rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, about 12 km.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal shows lower levels, without intensifying pulses.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations does not show a clear tendency to warp from stations closest to eruptive centers, while at more distant stations a slight deflation is maintained, possibly related to deep seismicity.
Based on the calibrated image, an emission column height of 3200 m is estimated at 08:48 UTC. and the ash cloud has a South-South-East direction.

The activity levels visible in the cone are highly variable, with occasional high pulses in the lava emission rate. The flow continues west, occasionally overflowing some of the pre-existing volcanic tubes and channels.
Over the next few days, the ash and SO₂ plume is expected to be oriented south-southeast from the eruptive focus, which is a favorable scenario for the aeronautical operation of the airport. from La Palma.

Regarding seismicity, the maximum magnitude was 3.6 mbLg, for a tremor today at 2:11 am at a depth of nine kilometers, felt with maximum intensity II-III (EMS).
There are a total of 460 people staying in hotels, five more than yesterday, including 67 in Los Llanos de Aridane and 393 in Fuencaliente. In addition, 43 dependents continue to be accommodated in island social health centers.
The latest data available on the affected area is estimated at 983.44 hectares, 2.42 more than in the last update (997.9 hectares according to Copernicus). The estimated maximum width of the distance between the flows is approximately 3,100 meters.
According to data provided by Copernicus, the buildings affected amount to approximately 2,712, of which 2,570 were completely damaged and 142 partially damaged.

Japan , Suwanosejima :

JMA reported that an explosion at 1317 on 26 October at Suwanosejima’s Ontake Crater produced an eruption plume that rose as high as 3.3 km above the crater rim and ejected material 1.9 km away from the crater. Ashfall was reported in Toshima village (4 km SSW). No explosions were recorded during 29 October-1 November, though eruption plumes rose as high as 2.4 km and tephra was ejected 400 m from crater. The Alert Level remained at 3 and the public was warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

The 8-km-long, spindle-shaped island of Suwanosejima in the northern Ryukyu Islands consists of an andesitic stratovolcano with two historically active summit craters. The summit is truncated by a large breached crater extending to the sea on the east flank that was formed by edifice collapse. Suwanosejima, one of Japan’s most frequently active volcanoes, was in a state of intermittent strombolian activity from Otake, the NE summit crater, that began in 1949 and lasted until 1996, after which periods of inactivity lengthened. The largest historical eruption took place in 1813-14, when thick scoria deposits blanketed residential areas, and the SW crater produced two lava flows that reached the western coast. At the end of the eruption the summit of Otake collapsed forming a large debris avalanche and creating the horseshoe-shaped Sakuchi caldera, which extends to the eastern coast. The island remained uninhabited for about 70 years after the 1813-1814 eruption. Lava flows reached the eastern coast of the island in 1884. Only about 50 people live on the island.

Spain / La Palma , Cumbre Vieja :

October 31, 2021 09:00 UTC. Eruptive activity continues on La Palma.

Since the last press release, 83 earthquakes have been located in the area affected by the volcanic reactivation of Cumbre Vieja. The biggest earthquake was the one located at 1:39 p.m. on the 30th, with a magnitude of 3.5 mbLg and a depth of 13 km.
Four earthquakes were located at depths of about 30 km, the rest of the hypocenters of the period are located at a shallower depth, about 12 km.

The amplitude of the volcanic tremor signal was maintained at high average levels, with intensifying pulses.
The island’s network of permanent GNSS stations shows a slight deformation to the southwest at station LP03, which is closest to the eruptive centers.
At the most remote stations, a slight deflation persisted, possibly linked to deep seismicity.

In view of the calibrated image, an emission cloud of 4,500 m is estimated at 9:30 UTC.
Image taken from the Cabeza de Vaca runway at 8:00 UTC where the ash column can be seen.

Yesterday October 30 at 19:05 UTC, due to the increase in the height of the volcanic ash cloud, the IGN issued a new VONA message (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) communicating that the said height reached 5,000 m above the sea level.

A second magnitude 5 earthquake was located in La Palma on Sunday, a day when air quality deteriorated in Los Llanos de Aridane, in the southwest of the island. The earthquake recorded this Sunday occurred at 5:52 p.m., with intensity IV, and 38 kilometers deep under the municipality of Villa de Mazo, the same in which on Saturday the National Geographic Institute (IGN) located at 7:24 am a first tremor of magnitude 5, with an intensity IV-V and 35 kilometers of depth.

This new movement came shortly after the scientific committee of the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca) commented that the volcano gave the impression that the number and magnitude of earthquakes were decreasing.

Sulfur dioxide emissions decline for the sixth day in a row. It is estimated that during the last day approximately 7,700 tonnes were emitted.

Flow number 3, the most active so far, reached Las Hoyas on Saturday, where it came to a stop without advancing towards the sea. 2,162 buildings were destroyed and 146 in danger, according to the European Copernicus satellite system. 280 hectares of crops have been affected, more than half of which are banana plantations. The rest was dedicated to the vines and avocados.

A few proximal VT-type events (4 events) were recorded in October, and distal seismicity in the region including the Porvenir-Poás-Barva volcanoes. The frequency of the appearance of bubbles in the hyperacid lake markedly decreased, the manifestation was observed just 1-2 times a day. The geodetic monitoring again shows a slight tendency to extend at the top of the volcano. A slight increase in the gas concentration was recorded in the multiGAS station, allowing the calculation of the ratios, which remain stable (SO2 / CO2 = 0.41 +/- 0.13, H2S / SO2 = 0.02 +/- 0.02). The SO2 flow remains very low, with only 29 +/- 17 t / d being calculated. The concentration of SO2 in the fumaroles detected by the EXPOGAS alarm system had a maximum of 1.7 ppm on October 22. The level of the hyperacid lake remained stable during the week, as did the rate of evaporation / infiltration. Fumaroles in the eastern sector of the active crater continue to show low water vapor flow and low temperature.

Guatemala , Fuego :

Activity:

The Fuego volcano observatory reports 6 to 10 weak, moderate or strong explosions per hour, which raise columns of gray ash to heights of 4,500 to 4,700 m above sea level (14,764 to 15,420 feet), which disperse southwest and south up to 15 kilometers away. Ash falls are noted on Panimaché I and II, Morelia, Santa Sofía, El Porvenir, La Rochela and other communities in these directions. The explosions produced moderate avalanches towards the ravines of Ceniza, Taniluyá, Santa Teresa and Las Lajas, some reaching the edge of the vegetation.

During the night and early in the morning, the explosions raised incandescent materials to heights of up to 400 meters above the crater. These explosions are accompanied by weak, moderate to strong rumblings with shock waves that vibrate the roofs and windows of the houses of the communities near the volcano. Faint degassing sounds were heard for periods of 2-4 minutes.
