Press release from the Paris Institute of Earth Physics, Piton de la Fournaise Volcanological Observatory, July 19, 2023 – 11:40 a.m. – 07:40 a.m. UTC
Ongoing eruption

The eruption started on July 02, 2023, around 08:30 local time continues. The amplitude of the volcanic tremor (indicator of an emission of lava and gas on the surface) is always fluctuating over time on the scale of a few tens of minutes, with phases of continuous tremor and phases of intermittent tremor. The amplitude of the tremor nevertheless remains low compared to the start of the eruption.
The fluctuations observed in the tremor are reflected at the level of the eruptive site by variations in intensity in the activity, with projections of lava fountains at the level of the more or less intense eruptive cone.

With the low surface activity, the morphology of the active volcanic cone – located southeast of the Enclos Fouqué at 1720 m altitude – hardly changes.
Lava flow now takes place mainly in lava tunnels in the immediate vicinity of the cone. This morning no flow was visible on the surface in the immediate vicinity of the cone.

Currently the growth of the lava field is mainly by widening and thickening near the eruptive cone at the level of the lava tunnel networks.
During last night, the active flows were at altitudes above 1400 m in the upper part of the Grandes Pentes.

A weak inflation of the summit zone has been recorded for 5 days, indicating a re-pressurization of the volcano’s feeding system with possible transfer of deep magma to the latter.
At the same time, the OVPF-IPGP NOVAC stations located on the edge of the Enclos Fouqué recorded an increase in SO2 fluxes in the air.
The seismic activity recorded under the summit zone remains weak. Thus over the last 24 hours, no superficial volcano-tectonic earthquake has been recorded. This low seismic activity leads to a reduction in the risk of the appearance of a new crack and/or collapse in the crater, but does not mean that it can be excluded.

Alert level: Alert 2-1 (eruption in the Enclos without any particular threat to the safety of people, property or the environment).

AVO/USGS Volcanic Activity Notice

Current Volcano Alert Level: ADVISORY
Previous Volcano Alert Level: UNASSIGNED
Current Aviation Color Code: YELLOW
Previous Aviation Color Code: UNASSIGNED

Issued: Wednesday, July 19, 2023, 12:18 PM AKDT
Source: Alaska Volcano Observatory
Notice Number: 2023/A1094
Location: N 52 deg 49 min W 169 deg 56 min
Elevation: 5676 ft (1730 m)
Area: Aleutians

Volcanic Activity Summary:
There has been an increase in the number of earthquakes observed near Cleveland volcano over the past week. Numerous earthquakes have been detected and 37 of these were large enough to be located by the local seismic network. Most of the earthquakes from early in the week located in the mid to shallow portions of the Earth’s crust, less than 11 miles (18 km) below the surface, while more recent earthquakes have been located at shallower depths, less than 4 miles (6 km) below the surface. These earthquakes are small (less than magnitude 2), but the frequency of events is unusual for Cleveland. These data along with satellite observations of elevated surface temperatures at the summit crater and continued gas emissions suggest an increased likelihood of a future eruption. In response, the Alaska Volcano Observatory is increasing the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and the Volcano Alert Level to ADVISORY.

The last eruptive activity at Cleveland volcano was a short-lived explosion during the evening (local time) of June 1, 2020. Despite the current pause, the eruptive period at Cleveland, dating back to 2001, remains ongoing and future explosions are likely. These have occurred without warning and typically generate small clouds of volcanic ash that are a hazard in the immediate vicinity of the volcano, though more significant ash emissions are possible.

Cleveland volcano is currently monitored with a five-station real-time seismic network. Based on past events, explosive eruptions of Cleveland may occur with little or no warning. Rapid detection of an ash-producing eruption may be possible using a combination of seismic, infrasound, lightning, and satellite data.

Remarks:
Cleveland volcano forms the western portion of Chuginadak Island, a remote and uninhabited island in the east central Aleutians. The volcano is located about 45 miles (75 km) west of the community of Nikolski, and 940 miles (1500 km) southwest of Anchorage. The most recent significant period of eruption began in February 2001 and produced 3 explosive events that generated ash clouds as high as 39,000 ft (11.8 km) above sea level. The 2001 eruption also produced a lava flow and hot avalanche that reached the sea. Since then, Cleveland has been intermittently active producing small lava flows, often followed by explosions that generate small ash clouds generally below 20,000 ft (6 km) above sea level. These explosions also launch debris onto the slopes of the cone producing hot pyroclastic avalanches and lahars that sometimes reach the coastline.

New Zealand , White Island :

Minor steam and gas emissions continue at Whakaari/White Island. Thu Jul 20 2023 11:45 AM

Based on observations over the last month, activity at Whakaari/White Island has been limited to minor steam and gas emissions. There have been no significant changes in the active crater area. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 2

Observations from the most recent monitoring and gas flights show the steam and gas plume continues to originate from the same vent locations as previously observed, with discharge rates in a similar range. Views from the Whakatane webcam show similar conditions prevail at Whakaari/White Island. There has been no evidence of ash emission or eruptive activity from these vents.

Gas emission rates and steam discharge are low, and broadly like earlier observations this year. Measurements from regular monitoring flights have recorded a decline in the temperatures from the larger vents. In March temperatures were higher than 240 °C, while the latest are only 120 °C.

Following the failure of our last two surviving on-island monitoring sites, we now have no on-island monitoring capability. We continue to make regular observation and gas measurement flights to monitor the status of the island. We obtain satellite-based ground deformation data approximately every 10 days that allows us to observe ground deformation trends. These are complimented by daily satellite-based Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) emission measurements, although this technique is not as sensitive as our gas measurement flights. Neither of these satellite techniques have detected significant changes in the overall activity at the volcano over the past few months.

The Volcanic Alert Level remains at Level 2 (moderate to heightened unrest) and the Aviation Colour Code remains at Yellow, acknowledging the current level of activity, but also continuing to consider the greater level of uncertainty in our interpretation due to the current lack of consistent, useful real-time data.

As the weather allows, we will continue to undertake gas measurement and observation flights over the island until we can service our on-island equipment and power supplies.

Sulawesi , Lokon – Empung :

Reports of increased level of activity on G. Lokon, from Level II (WASPADA) to Level III (SIAGA)

Visual observation
Visual conditions for the period from July 1 to July 16, 2023 for the Lokon volcano (15,579 m a.s.l.) were generally sunny to rainy, precipitation measured 125 mm for 16 days. Smoke from the crater is white with low to thick intensity, about 25-350 meters high above the summit.

Instrumental observation
Seismicity during the period June 2023 recorded;
171 emission earthquakes,
8 non-harmonic tremors,
225 shallow volcanic earthquakes,
15 deep volcanic earthquakes,
1 local tectonic earthquake
69 distant tectonic earthquakes
7 Continuous Tremors with an amplitude of 0.1 to 25 mm, dominant value of 5 mm.

Seismicity for the period from July 1 to July 16, 2023 recorded;
50 emissions earthquakes,
7 non-harmonic tremors,
151 shallow volcanic earthquakes,
12 deep volcanic earthquakes,
33 distant tectonic earthquakes
6 Continuous Tremors with an amplitude of 0.5-4 mm, dominant value of 0.5 mm.

On July 17, 2023 at 12:00 WITA, a tremor/swarm signal was observed with a maximum amplitude of 16 mm.

Assessment
The seismicity of G. Lokon is dominated by shallow volcanic earthquakes (VB) and emission earthquakes. Judging from the recorded seismic data, there has been a trend of a significant increase since June 13, 2023 at 6:50 p.m. WITA, when tremors began to be detected with a maximum amplitude of 28 mm and a duration of 7200 seconds. The number of earthquakes until July 16, 2023 is even higher than before June 20, 2023. From these data, it is clear that there was an increase in volcanic activity on the surface after the Tremor signal was recorded.

The threat of danger at this time is the occurrence of phreatic to magmatic eruptions with or without being followed by a sudden flow of hot eruption clouds. The rainy season is still ongoing around Mount Lokon.

Iceland , Litli Hrútur :

According to the Institute of Earth Sciences lava continues to eruption from main vent at Fagradalsfjall and travel S and SW. On 14 July the advancing edge of the flow connected with the 2021 lava field in the NE part of Meradalir . The main vent was elongated and about 22 m tall on 15 July. During 13-17 July the lava flow rate was an estimated 12.7 cubic meters per second, and by 18 July the total erupted volume was about 8.4 million cubic meters. The flow advanced an average of 300-400 m per day, though the distance was highly variable. Flow thicknesses averaged 10 m, though some areas reached 20 m.

At about 23h30 on 18 July lava filled the main cone and occasionally spilled over onto the flanks. A breach high on the NW rim occurred at around 02h51 on 19 July and lava flowed down the NW flank. Spatter was ejected beyond the crater rim. At around 02h59 lava fountaining increased and lava flowed short distances E. At around 04h12 sections of the NW wall of the cone collapsed, draining the crater, and sending lava flows N and W. According to Almannavarnadeild ríkislögreglustjóra and news sources the police closed the pathway to see the eruption on 13 July, then reopened the path to tourists on 17 July. Firefighters were working to control the burning vegetation set on fire by the lava.

Observation instrumentale
La sismicité au cours de la période juin 2023 a enregistré  ;

La sismicité pour la période du 1er au 16 juillet 2023 a enregistré  ;

ACTIVITY STATUS SUMMARY

In the light of the surveillance data, it is highlighted:
1) VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS: In this period a normal explosive activity of Strombolian type was observed. The total hourly frequency of explosions was variable on low values (3-5 events/h). The intensity of the explosions was low and medium in both the North Crater area and the Center-South Crater area.
2) SEISMOLOGY: The seismological parameters monitored do not show any significant variations.
3) GROUND DEFORMATIONS: The ground deformation monitoring networks in operation on the island did not show any significant variations during the period studied.
4) GEOCHEMISTRY: SO2 flux at an average and increasing level
The flux of CO2 from the soils in the summit zone is on average values.
The C/S ratio in the plume settles on average values (9.5)
Isotope ratio of dissolved Helium in heat sinks: There is no update from the July 27, 2022 sampling.
5) SATELLITE OBSERVATIONS: The thermal activity observed by satellite in the summit area was weak.

Photo of the crater terrace taken from the Pizzo sopra la fossa with the location of the crater sectors of the two crater zones (N and CS)

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
In the period under observation only an update is available concerning the volcanological field observations on Stromboli, following problems with the acquisition of signals
videos caused by damage to the optical fiber connecting Punta Labronzo and COA due to the bad weather that hit the island on August 12, 2022. The latest updated data for the period from August 8 to August 14, 2022, placed the total explosive activity at a medium-low level, with an intensity of explosions between low and medium in the areas of the North and Center-South crater.
As part of the activities of the DPC/INGV Annex A convention and the UN departmental project, 2 inspections were carried out in the summit area: on the morning of Wednesday September 7th and Friday September 9th.
Eruptive activity was observed from the Roccette shelters to the Ginostra shelters, passing through the Elipista and the Pizzo. Overall activity was low both in terms of the type and intensity of explosions and the number of events.

Photo of an ash emission from the S2 mouth.

In the Center-South zone, the degassing was very weak, although it was more evident on Friday 9 when the crater S1 and that located between S1 and S2 also produced a light and discontinuous degassing. Weak and infrequent (sometimes simultaneously) ash emissions were observed from at least 2 vents located near the S2 crater, sometimes associated with little coarse material. At the central crater (C) degassing was almost absent; the accumulation of collapsed material inside the upper edge of the wall facing the Pizzo was clearly visible.

In the North zone, the N2 crater showed very intense degassing with discontinuous jets of very noisy gas, and modest but rare explosions of lava shreds. The N1 crater showed very little degassing in general on both days, although episodic ash emissions were observed on Friday 9.

Volcanic Alert Level remains at 0

The earthquake sequence beneath Lake Taupō continues, now including a magnitude 4.2 event at 6.36 am on Saturday 10 September 2022 – the largest earthquake in the area to date this year. The earthquake was located on the east side of the lake at a depth of approximately 5 km and was widely felt locally. The Volcanic Alert Level for Taupō Volcanic Centre remains at Level 0.

Figure 1: Earthquakes located by GeoNet in the Lake Taupō area from January 1 to September 12, 2022. All earthquakes shown here were located less than 30 km deep. There are over 650 earthquakes shown on the map

The earthquake sequence beneath the central part of Lake Taupō (Taupō-nui-a-Tia), that we reported on in our previous two Volcanic Activity Bulletins, has continued at a rate of ~40-50 earthquakes per week. Since the start of the sequence in May 2022 the rate has increased from 30 events per week to more than 40 per week. We have now located over 650 earthquakes at less than 30 km depth.

The M 4.2 earthquake on Saturday morning is the largest event this year at Taupō. It was reported felt by 1242 people. The next two largest earthquakes were both magnitude 3.6; the first was recorded on 17 May and the other on 11 July 2022. Since 2000 we have located 7 earthquakes larger than magnitude 4 under the lake, the largest was a M 5.0 on 4 September 2019 located near Motutaiko Island. Saturday’s earthquake was 8 km to the northeast of that 2019 earthquake.

Figure 1 shows that earthquake locations in this year’s sequence are forming three clusters in the central part of the lake. There is a smaller, western cluster centred just offshore from Karangahape Cliffs, then a cluster in the central lake area and the larger eastern cluster that partly wraps around the central cluster. Figure 1 also shows clusters of small earthquakes at geothermal fields in the Taupo area. The magnitudes and numbers of events in the clusters are typical of the ongoing pattern of seismicity. Shown in Figure 2 is the number of earthquakes detected and located each year since 2000 in the dashed area outlined in the map.

In addition to seismic activity, GeoNet continuously monitors ground deformation about Taupō. Further to the 12 mm uplift seen from lake levelling data, deformation data from GNSS (GPS) instruments around the lake also show a signal indicating horizontal deformation. Numerical modelling indicates that the horizontal extension is consistent with a deformation source within the main region of seismic activity.

Figure 2: Earthquakes detected and located in the dashed area outlined in the map each year since 2000. The 2022 sequence of earthquakes stands out, at this stage numbers exceed sequences in 2009, are near equal to those in 2008, and remain less than those in 2019.

Taupō Volcanic Centre is part of the Taupō Volcanic Zone, a tectonically very active region with many known faults and active volcanism. Activity in this region is often related to a mix of regional deformation processes and the separate magmatic systems under the volcanoes, which has helped to inform our view that Volcanic Alert Level 0 is currently appropriate for the Taupō Volcanic Centre. Therefore, the Volcanic Alert Level remains at 0.

Increased level of alert on Shirane volcano:

Volcanic earthquakes have increased on the Kusatsu Shirane volcano, and the Meteorological Agency has announced a warning around the crater on the night of the 28th, raising the level of the eruption alert to « 2 ». We call the guards to be vigilant for an area of about 1 km around the crater lake called Yukama.
According to the Meteorological Agency of Japan, volcanic earthquakes with epicenter sites near Yukama crater lake began at about 17:00 on September 28 in Shiraneyama, on the Kusatsu Shirane volcano, in the northwest of Gumma Prefecture. A small change is observed on the observation equipment.

The Meteorological Agency estimated that volcanic activity was increasing and announced a warning around the crater at 19:30, assuming there would be an eruption in the area around Yugama, and raised the level of eruption alert. at level 2.

Regarding the level of Shirane Volcano eruption alert, the Japan Meteorological Agency had dropped the level last month, at level 1 indicating « pay attention, it is an active volcano ».
Meanwhile, regarding the « Honkonama » crater of the Kusatsu Shirane volcano where the eruption occurred in January, it continues at level « 2 » and calls for vigilance about 1 km from the crater.

Sulawesi , Donggala earthquake :

Response to the Donggala M7.7 earthquake, Sulawasi Tengah, September 28, 2018

1. General information
A major earthquake occurred on September 28, 2018 at 17:02, with an epicenter at coordinates; 119.85o N 0.18o S, and a depth of 10 km, which began with the initial earthquake and was followed by a series of aftershocks in the Donggala region of central Sulawesi Province.

2. Geological conditions of the areas affected by the earthquake
The earthquakes struck the regency of Donggala. The area around the seismic center is generally composed of pre-tertiary, tertiary and quaternary rocks. Pre-tertiary and tertiary rocks have been altered. Pre-tertiary and tertiary rocks have been altered. Pre-tertiary and tertiary rocks that have undergone Quaternary alteration and sediments are generally decomposed, loose, soft, unconsolidated, enhancing the effects of earthquakes, making them vulnerable to seismic shocks.
3. Causes of earthquakes
Based on the position and depth of the seismic center, the earthquake is due to active fault activity in the Palu-Koro fault zone, oriented northwest-southeast.
4. Impact of the earthquake
Until this report was issued, the earthquake killed 1, wounded 10 and damaged buildings in Sinreja Subdistrict, Donggala Regency. Based on BMKG data, the earthquake was felt at Donggala, a VIII level on the MMI scale (Modified Mercalli Intensity). This earthquake caused a tsunami and the tsunami early warning was canceled by BMKG.

5. Recommendation:
The community is encouraged to remain calm and follow the instructions and information provided by local BPBD agents.
The community must remain vigilant against the occurrence of aftershocks whose energy is lower than that of the main earthquake.
The Emergency Response Team (TTD) of the Geological Agency (BG) will leave immediately at the site of the disaster.

Philippines , Kanlaon :

KANLAON VOLCANO BULLETIN 29 September 2018 08:00 A.M.

Kanlaon Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded three (3) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Ground deformation data from continuous GPS measurements indicate pronounced inflation of the edifice since December 2017, signifying pressurization beneath the edifice. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 1105 tonnes/day on 01 September 2018.

Alert Level 2 status prevails over Kanlaon Volcano, which means that the volcano is undergoing a moderate level of unrest due to probable intrusion of magma at depth that may or may not lead to a magmatic eruption. The local government units and the public are strictly reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited due to the further possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions. Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Kanlaon Volcano’s activity and any new development will be relayed to all concerned.

Summit Elevation 2625 ft (800 m)
Current Volcano Alert Level: WATCH
Current Aviation Color Code: ORANGE

Unrest continues at Semisopochnoi volcano. Intermittent seismic tremor has been detected on local seismic stations throughout the week. Early in the week, several of the most energetic seismic signals also produced signals detected on the Adak infrasound array located 257 km (159.5 miles) east of Semisopochnoi. These events were likely short-lived explosions, but produced no ash detectable in satellite imagery or reported by passing pilots. Cloudy conditions throughout the week have limited our ability to view the island and substantiate eruptive activity. The September 10 ash deposit indicates the potential for ash emissions coincident with the ongoing elevated seismicity. Thus Semisopochnoi volcano’s status remains at ORANGE/WATCH.

Semisopochnoi volcano, November 2012. Oblique aerial photograph courtesy of Roger Clifford. Semisopochnoi consists of a large caldera (about 8 km or 5 miles across) and a number of significant post-caldera composite cones. In this photo, the three closely-spaced snow dappled cones in the middle form the Cerberus complex. The large cone at lower right is called Sugarloaf, and this is thought to be the location of the most recent eruption in 1987. We know little in detail about this eruption.

Semisopochnoi is monitored with an on-island seismic network, and remotely by satellite and lightning sensors. An infrasound array on Adak Island may detect explosive emissions from Semisopochnoi with a 13 minute delay if atmospheric conditions permit.

Semisopochnoi, view of Cerberus from the south.

Remote Semisopochnoi volcano occupies the largest, young volcanic island in the western Aleutians. The volcano is dominated by an 8-km (5-mile) diameter caldera that contains a small lake and a number of post-caldera cones and craters. The age of the caldera is not known with certainty but is likely early Holocene. The last known eruption of Semisopochnoi occurred in 1987, probably from Sugarloaf Peak on the south coast of the island, but details are lacking. Another prominent, young post-caldera landform is Mount Cerberus, a three-peaked cone cluster in the southwest part of the caldera. The island is uninhabited and part of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge. It is located 65 km (40 mi) northeast of Amchitka Island and 200 km (130 mi) west of Adak.

Japon , Kusatsu Shirane :
