Photo of the area of the Stromboli crater on March 31, taken with a) shaded model of the terrain, the lines of different colors delimit the different areas of the crater; b) orthomosaic, the lines of different colors delimit the different areas of the crater; c) thermal ortho-image superimposed on the shaded terrain model, thermal anomalies are identifiable with white red yellow, cold areas are blue.

VOLCANOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS
In the period under observation, the eruptive activity of Stromboli was characterized by the analysis of the images recorded by the surveillance cameras INGV-OE located at an altitude of 190 m, Punta Corvi and an altitude of 400 m.

Morpho-structural characterization of the crater area following the inspection of May 8, 2021.
Within the framework of the activities of the UNO project and the DPC / all convention. A, an ortho photo and a DSM (Digital Surface Model) of the crater area with a resolution of 7 and 25 cm, respectively, were processed. Direct on-site observation and morpho-structural analysis of the aforementioned areas made it possible to verify the following evolutions compared to the last morphological update of March 31, 2021 and to assess the state of the active vents:
(1) The area of the N1 crater has widened by 8 m in the southwest direction and has 3 active vents
(2) In the area of the N2 crater, 2 slag cones with a diameter of about 20 m and two other coalescers with a maximum elongation axis of 25 m were formed, where there were previously depressions of crater. It has 4 active mouths.
(3) The CS2 and CS1 crater areas are now merging and there are at least 10 mouths inside, of which 7 are active. The southwest edge widened a few meters in the southwest direction.
(4) The CS3 crater area has remained unchanged and has an inactive vent.

Description of the explosive activity captured by surveillance cameras.
In the area of the North crater, the N1 crater produced explosions of varying intensity from low to medium-high (sometimes the products reached 250 m in height) emitting coarse materials (lapilli and bombs). The N2 vent, at four emission points, showed explosive activity of varying intensity from low to medium-high (sometimes the products reached 250 m in height) emitting mainly coarse materials with a throwing activity that was intense for short intervals on May 6. The average frequency of explosions varied from 8 to 13 events / h.
In the Center-South zone, there were at least three emission points with explosions, emitting coarse and fine materials, with medium and sometimes high intensity (the products exceeded 250 m in height).
The explosive activity showed average hourly frequency values between 1 and 4 events / h.

PRESS RELEASE VOLCANIC ACTIVITY – STROMBOLI, May 11, 2021.

From around 08:00 a.m. on May 11, until 11:30 a.m. (UTC time), we observe by surveillance cameras and INGV personnel on the ground, a volcanic activity characterized by an intense activity of projections in the area. from the North crater. In particular, the activity was discontinuous with more intense phases between 8:10 a.m. and 9 a.m. and between 9:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., followed by short and more discontinuous phases. The Center-Sud crater sector produced explosive activity of varying and intense intensity. Overall, activity landed at a medium to high level to stay at an average level during the afternoon.

The SO2 flux showed values oscillating between a medium and high medium level, with progressive stages and a constant increase in coincidence with the intense projection activities. Since April, there has been a tendency to increase the degassing regime.
At the same time, from 08:05 hours (UTC time), an increase in the level of tremor of the top stations was observed, which reached medium to high values until 11:30 hours UTC and then returned to the levels. previous ones. The evolution of the VLP signals did not show variations either in number or in amplitude, which remains at low levels.
The available soil deformation data show no significant variation.

Iceland , Geldingadalur :

The magma fountains soar 300 meters into the air.

The volcanic projections that rise from the Geldingadalur crater reach a height of 300 meters when the power is at its highest. The crater that was created is now about 50 meters high.

Volcanologist Þorvaldur Þórðarson says the flow rate of the lava flow from Geldingadalur crater is always in the range of 5 to 10 cubic meters per second, and even closer to ten cubic meters. Updated results of lava flow and eruption measurements are expected today.

Around 1 p.m. yesterday, Monday, the crater jets were extremely high. They have been seen from many places. For example, they were clearly visible through the window of the Ríkisútvarp news agency in Efstaleit / Reykjavík. They always show up at a steady pace. The eruption seems to have stopped for a few minutes before setting off again in the crater and the magma is projected hundreds of meters into the air. It is an impressive sight, even from miles away.

The erupting volcano on the Reykjanes peninsula continues to surprise earth scientists, nearly two months after it started. According to the latest readings, lava flow is up by 70 percent and the eruption is twice as powerful as it has been for most of the time so far. “For an eruption to be growing in its eighth week is unusual and there are no signs we are about to see that stop. This is a different type of eruption than we are used to seeing,” says geophysicist Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson.
Data show that 95 percent of eruptions are most powerful at the beginning and then lose power gradually or quite suddenly. The eruption close to Fagradalsfjall appears to be an exception to that rule. “A significant increase in lava flow has occurred at Fagradalsfjall in recent weeks,” a press release from the University of Iceland earth sciences department confirms.

The increased lava flow appears to go hand-in-hand with the lava fountais that are being regularly throw high into the sky. The volcano’s new lava field now covers 1.8 square kilometres and has an overall mass of some 30 million cubic metres.

Most eruptions originate from a magma chamber under a central volcano. Pressure and the size of the chamber dictate how long and how big the eruption is. “But this eruption seems to be controlled by the eruption channel and how much it can transport. The channel that opened was particularly narrow and long,” the university report states—adding that the evidence suggests it is widening as time goes on.

Magnús Tumi says the data confirm what many have instinctively felt: that the eruption is getting bigger. It was not certain before, though, as the formerly stable eruption has become more volatile, so it is harder to compare.

Magnús Tumi says it is highly unusual for an eruption to be gaining strength two months in. He says there is no sign the current developments will change, and no way of knowing when the eruption will stop, or for how long it will continue growing in strength.

Philippines , Bulusan :

BULUSAN VOLCANO BULLETIN 12 May 2021 08:00 A.M.

In the past 24-hour period, the Bulusan Volcano Network recorded one hundred sixty-six (166) volcanic earthquakes. Ground deformation data from real-time electronic tilt monitoring recorded sustained inflation of the upper slopes that began 6 March 2021 consistent with short-term inflation of the edifice measured by continuous GPS monitoring since February 2021. These parameters generally indicate that shallow hydrothermal processes are occurring beneath the edifice.

Alert Level 1 status now prevails over Bulusan Volcano, which means that it is currently in an abnormal condition. Local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) must be strictly prohibited and that vigilance in the 2-kilometer Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) on the southeast sector must be exercised due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions. Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft. Furthermore, people living within valleys and along river/stream channels especially on the southeast, southwest and northwest sector of the edifice should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall should phreatic eruption occur. DOST-PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano’s condition and any new development will be communicated to all concerned stakeholders.

Chile , Cerro Hudson :

For the period evaluated, the seismic activity associated with rock fracturing (VT type events), whose locations are around the caldera, shows a slight increase in the quantity and energy of the events compared to the previous period. .
Two higher energy events stand out on April 17 and 23, both with a local magnitude (ML) of 2.9. They were located 4.1 km and 4.2 km, both southwest (SSW) of the center of the caldera with a depth of 4.1 and 1.8 km respectively.

The seismic activity associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcano (type LP and HB) showed an increase in the number of long-term LP events compared to the previous fortnight, although they showed a decrease energy released. It should be noted that no hybrid earthquake was identified during the period analyzed.
The data provided by the GNSS stations recorded variations of 0.7 cm / month in the station located to the West-North-West of the volcanic building, however this variation would be attributable to seasonal effects.
No abnormal surface activity was recorded for the period evaluated.

Islande , Geldingadalur :

Iceland , Geldingadalur / Fagradalsfjall :

No evidence that the eruption stops.

Recent changes in eruptive behavior at Fagradalsfjall, where either high jets of magma emerge from the crater or eruptive activity slows down, do not appear to have had a significant effect on the lava flow, at least not yet, according to the researchers final measurements of the flow by the University of Iceland.

The lava flow last week averaged 7.5 cubic meters per second. The flow was slightly higher but similar to the previous week. The Institute of Earth Sciences says there is no sign the eruption is stopping.

The volume of the eruption has now reached 23 million cubic meters, and the lava area is 1.41 square kilometers. The biggest change last week is located in the depression between Stórahrút and the hills east of Geldingadalur and in the lava spit up to Meradalur.

It is not possible to say how long the eruption could last, but the development of lava flows can be expected to indicate in the future.

« A comparison with other eruptions shows that the flow is similar to what was longest at Surtsey after the lava eruption that began there in April 1964 until the eruption ended in June 1967. The eruptions are not entirely comparable, as in the first weeks of the Surtsey eruption the flow of magma to the surface was several times greater. The flow at Geldingadalur is about 5% of the average flow at Holuhraun during the six months that the eruption lasted, from September 2014 to the end of February 2015 ”, indicates the website of the Institute of Earth Sciences.

Saint Vincent , Soufrière Saint Vincent :

University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) reported that seismicity at Soufrière St. Vincent (often simply referred to as “La Soufriere”) remained low during 28 April-4 May, with a few long-period, hybrid, and volcano-tectonic earthquakes recorded daily. Multiple significant lahars were generated by rainfall during 28-29 April. Lahars likely descended all valleys in the Red and Orange zones, and some were hot and visibly steaming. Trees brought down by lahars were swept to the sea; floating logs created hazardous conditions for small boats along the coastline. UWI-SRC and the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) both warned the public to stay away from drainages and areas prone to flooding, and noted that lahars have caused notable erosion and damage to drainages and parts of the coastline. Smaller lahars were recorded during the mornings of 30 April and 1 May. Multiple lahars were detected in likely all the volcano’s drainages for a period of about six hours on 3 May, with the most intense lahars occurring during 1100-1200. Sulfur dioxide emissions were measured from a boat near the W coast, yielding a flux of 1,036 tons per day. Photos showed people in Sandy Bay shoveling off ash from rooftops on 4 May. The volcano Alert Level remained at Red.

“This is the new 40 foot high river Bank of the Wallibou River. Look closely there are 3 people standing on it.”

La Soufriere St. Vincent, – SCIENTIFIC UPDATE 05/05/21 6:00PM
– Seismic activity at La Soufrière has remained low since the tremor associated with the explosion and ash venting on 22 April.
– In the last 24 hours, only a few long-period, hybrid and volcano-tectonic earthquakes have been recorded and there was no further seismic tremor.
– The volcano continues to be in a state of unrest.
– Explosions with accompanying ashfall, of similar or larger size to those that have already occurred in this eruption, can take place with little or no warning.
– Caution should be taken in crossing river valleys on the volcano due to the increased risk of lahars (mudflows) during periods of rainfall on the volcano.
– The volcano is at alert level RED.

Japan , Sakurajima :

JMA reported that during 26 April-3 May incandescence from Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) was visible nightly. There was a total of 10 explosions, producing ash plumes that rose as high has 2.4 km above the summit and ejected bombs 1.3-1.7 km away from the crater. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale), and residents were warned to stay 2 km away from the crater.

The Aira caldera in the northern half of Kagoshima Bay contains the post-caldera Sakurajima volcano, one of Japan’s most active. Eruption of the voluminous Ito pyroclastic flow accompanied formation of the 17 x 23 km caldera about 22,000 years ago. The smaller Wakamiko caldera was formed during the early Holocene in the NE corner of the Aira caldera, along with several post-caldera cones. The construction of Sakurajima began about 13,000 years ago on the southern rim of Aira caldera and built an island that was finally joined to the Osumi Peninsula during the major explosive and effusive eruption of 1914. Activity at the Kitadake summit cone ended about 4850 years ago, after which eruptions took place at Minamidake. Frequent historical eruptions, recorded since the 8th century, have deposited ash on Kagoshima, one of Kyushu’s largest cities, located across Kagoshima Bay only 8 km from the summit. The largest historical eruption took place during 1471-76.

Guatemala , Pacaya :

Activity:
The Pacaya Volcano Observatory reports that due to weather conditions, visibility to the volcano has been limited, only white outgassing is observed at the height of Mackenney crater, but no explosion or rumbling or other noise is heard. In the crack of the northwest flank, the expulsion of incandescent material is sometimes observed at low altitude, and the lava flow that comes out of this crack continues to advance slowly towards the West, over a length of about 2100 meters. with its front located to the south of the area known as La Breña. Detachments of glowing blocks continue to occur throughout the flow, especially where the slope is greater. The seismic stations around the volcano record internal tremors, associated with the movement of magma inside the volcanic building and with periods of outgassing in the crater.

INSIVUMEH reported that during 27-29 April occasional explosions at Pacaya’s Mackenney Crater ejected incandescent material as high as 250 m above the summit. On 27 April a lava flow emerged from a new fissure on the upper SE flank traveled 200 m. At around 0500 on 29 April the seismic network recorded signals indicating a change from mostly explosive to mostly effusive activity. At around 0645 a new fissure opened on the N flank, producing a lava flow that rapidly traveled N towards Cerro Chino and then turned S and spread W and SW. Explosive activity at the fissure was minor during 29-30 April. By 3 May the flow was almost 2.1 km long, and continued to advanced W and SW at least through 4 May.

La Martinique Island , Montagne Pelée :

Weekly report on the activity of Mount Pelée for the period from April 23 to 30, 2021.

Seismicity of volcanic origin has increased sharply over the past week. Between April 23, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. (UTC) and April 30, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. (UTC), the OVSM recorded
at least 312 volcano-tectonic earthquakes of magnitude less than or equal to 1.0, including 241 between April 27 and 29 with nearly 163 earthquakes on April 28. These earthquakes were located inside the volcanic edifice between 3.0 km below sea level and 1 km above sea level. None of these earthquakes were felt by the population. This volcano-tectonic-type superficial seismicity is associated with the formation of micro-fractures in the volcanic edifice. During the reporting period, OVSM also recorded 13 hybrid-type earthquakes. These signals containing low frequencies are associated with the presence of fluids (gas, hydrothermal waters) in the volcanic edifice.

Despite this strong increase in seismicity and a change in its characteristics (depth and seismic waveforms) in a few days, it should be noted that the seismic energy released remains moderate with earthquakes whose average magnitude has remained clearly below 1. During phases of volcanic reactivation, periods of greater seismic activity often alternate with phases of weaker seismicity. Activity declined markedly on April 30 but seismicity above baseline is still recorded. No other changes were noted in the activity of Mount Pelée.
A main area of heavily degraded vegetation is still observed on the southwest flank of Mount Pelée, between the upper Rivière Claire and the Rivière Chaude  .
These observations reflect the variable dynamics of the processes of magmatic and hydrothermal origin at Mount Pelée in line with its renewed activity since April 2019.

The alert level remains YELLOW: vigilance.

Islande , Geldingadalur / Fagradalsfjall :

Press release of May 03, 2021 – 3:00 p.m.

The eruption that started on 04/09/2021 at 7 p.m. (appearance of the tremor) continues. the amplitude of the tremor after having stagnated from April 29 to May 1, resumed its tendency to slowly decrease since May 2. However, its amplitude remains significant, still reaching 50% of the maximum amplitude observed during this eruption on April 13.

– Over the past 24 hours, 6 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (between sea level and the surface) have been recorded, all located directly above the summit craters.

– The CO2 fluxes in the soil are always increasing in the far field (Plains region).
– The slight inflation (swelling) of the summit area and the base of the terminal cone is confirmed. This parameter will be carefully monitored over the next few days because it may correspond to the pressurization of the superficial magmatic reservoir located under the summit and could suggest a deep magma flow entering the upper superficial magmatic reservoir adding to the outlet flow of the reservoir that feeds the eruptive site.
– The improvement in weather conditions on site since yesterday continues, making it possible to observe the eruption from Piton de Bert and more generally from the rampart on the Enclos Fouque.
– An intervention carried out this morning with the support of the SAG and the PGHM, allowed us to observe that the flow front was still located upstream of the Bonnet crater and that it had resumed a slow downstream progress, as well as taking lava samples and restarting a broken seismic station.
– The flow of lava at the exit of the eruptive vents is essentially tunneled and almost to the upper limit of the large slopes.
– The lava fountains, clearly visible until the beginning of the bad weather period, are now much weaker. A small lava lake has taken place inside the upstream eruptive vent, while let the gas plume concentrate on the downstream vent.

– The favorable meteorological conditions allowed an estimation of the lava flow by satellite imagery. Surface flows estimated from satellite data via the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University) remain below 7 m3 / s. However, the lava flow, now largely tunneled, probably leads to an underestimation of this flow.
– Note, this morning as yesterday morning, the presence of fires in the vegetation located at the foot of the Nez coupé du Tremblet.

Peru , Sabancaya :

Analysis period: from April 26, 2021 to May 02, 2021, Arequipa, May 03, 2021.
Alert level: ORANGE

The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) reports that the eruptive activity of the Sabancaya volcano remains at moderate levels, that is to say with the recording of an average of 91 daily explosions, with columns of ash and gas up to an altitude of 2.3 km above the summit of the volcano and their consequent dispersion. Therefore, for the following days, no significant change is expected in eruptive activity.

The IGP recorded and analyzed the occurrence of 1703 earthquakes of volcanic origin, associated with the circulation of magmatic fluids inside the Sabancaya volcano. An average of 91 explosions was recorded daily. During this period, Volcano-Tectonic (VT) earthquakes associated with rock fractures were located mainly in the East, and North-East of Sabancaya and presented magnitudes between M1.4 and M2.5.

The monitoring of the deformation of the volcanic structure using GNSS techniques (processed with fast orbits) does not present any significant anomalies. However, in general, an inflation process was observed in the northern sector (around the Hualca Hualca volcano). Visual surveillance identified columns of gas and ash up to an altitude of 2.3 km above the summit of the volcano, which were scattered towards the South-West, South, South-West and North-West sectors. West of Sabancaya. Satellite recordings have identified the presence of 11 thermal anomalies (maximum value of 42 MW) associated with the presence of a lava body on the surface of the volcano’s crater.

RECOMMENDATIONS
• Keep the volcanic alert level in orange.
• Do not approach within a radius of less than 12 km from the crater.

Iceland , Geldingadalur :

Re-evaluation needed of the size of the hazard area ,May 4 ,2021 , Updated May 03 at 12:15

The eruption in Fagradalsfjall continues through one main crater. The active crater is the fifth fissure opening that opened in the area on the 13th of April. Since the 27th of April, the volcanic activity was characterized by continuous lava fountains, while the activity changed at around midnight on the 2nd of May, and has since been showing pulsating behaviour. These pulses have intermittent active periods of 8-12 minutes, with 1-2 minutes of rest periods in between. The active pulses start with a strong fountain activity, with fountains reaching up to 100-150 m above ground level, and some even higher. These pulses are very apparent in the seismic tremor from seismic stations in a wide area around the eruption site.

On Sunday morning, just after 6 am, the wind direction changed to slow easterly, and a few hours later smoke was detected in the southwest slopes of Geldingadalir. Possibly, hot pyroxene from the eruptive crater has been carried by the wind to the southwest of the lava field for about 300 meters distance and started a brush fire which can be seen on one of the two RÚV webcams.

It is not clear what is causing these changes in volcanic activity, but changes in magma flow, the chemical composition of magma/gas, or possibly changes in the volcanic conduit cannot be ruled out.

Considering these changes in activity, the size of the hazard area at the eruption site is being re-evaluated.

New Zealand , White Island :

Minor volcanic unrest continues at Whakaari/White Island , Published: Tue May 4 2021 12:30 PM

Despite a short-lived burst of activity on 29 April, volcanic activity at Whakaari/White Island remains at low levels. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 1.

The brief period of low-energy tremor and acoustic signals was recorded on 29 April at around 2230 NZST as a sequence of small volcanic earthquakes, leading to volcanic tremor. During the period of volcanic tremor impulsive acoustic signals were recorded and this lasted for several hours.

An observation flight on 30 April confirmed there was no ejected material from this seismic activity – unlike in previous episodes when ejected material was seen within metres from the active vent. No observations of changes were seen on the island’s webcams.

This episode is likely caused by a series of low-energy subterranean explosions. Similar periods of activity were observed in mid-February and early-mid March, returning to typical low levels shortly afterwards.

Gas and observation flights have confirmed the amount of gas been released from the volcano is unchanged since March. The volcano continues to produce a moderate gas and steam plume, and this will cause weak acid rain downwind.

The thermal infrared measurements also confirm the temperatures of the active vents are not changing significantly. The level of seismic tremor remains at background levels. These observations and the observed minor activity are consistent with the ongoing activity. The Volcanic Alert Level remains at 1 and the Aviation Colour Code remains at Green.

The Volcanic Alert Level reflects the current level of volcanic unrest or activity and is not a forecast of future activity. While Volcanic Alert Level 1 is mostly associated with environmental hazards (including discharge of steam and hot volcanic gases, earthquakes, landslides and hydrothermal activity) eruptions can still occur with little or no warning. The main plausible triggers for a sudden eruption are the collapse of unstable material in an active vent and the possible ingress of water underground onto the shallow magma body.

04 Mai 2021 .

Press release of May 02, 2021 – 2:15 p.m.

The eruption that started on 04/09/2021 at 7 p.m. (appearance of the tremor) continues. The intensity of the volcanic tremor (indicator of a surface lava emission) stopped its slow decrease and is
relatively stable for three days now.

– Over the past 24 hours, 4 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (between sea level and the surface) have been recorded, all located directly above the summit craters.
– The CO2 fluxes in the soil are always increasing in the far field (Plains region).

Image of the eruptive site taken this morning at 9.45am local time (5.45am UTC) from the webcams of the OVPF-IPGP-IRT
located at Piton de Bert (© OVPF-IPGP-IRT). We can see a fire at the foot of the nose cut of Tremblet, meeting place
of the flow and the rampart.

– A slight inflation (swelling) of the summit area and the base of the terminal cone seems to be emerging. This parameter will be monitored over the next few days because it may correspond to the pressurization of the superficial magmatic reservoir located under the summit and could suggest a deep magma flow entering the superficial magmatic reservoir greater than the outlet flow of the reservoir which supplies the eruptive site.
– The improvement in weather conditions on site since last night has made it possible to observe the eruption from Piton de Bert and more generally from the rampart on the Enclos Fouqué. On the image below, we can distinguish, the two vents, a more intense plume on the vent located most downstream, the flow from the eruptive site and up to the break in slope, as well as the smoke produced by the fire at the foot of the rampart at the level of the Nez Coupé du Tremblet.

– Improved weather conditions made it possible to estimate the lava flow by satellite imagery. Surface flows estimated from satellite data via the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University) remain below 8 m3 / s. However, the lava flow, now largely tunneled, probably leads to an underestimation of this flow.
– Note, since this morning the presence of a fire in the vegetation located at the foot of the Nez coupé du Tremblet.

Recent work and news
In the past month there were three major water eruptions of Steamboat Geyser, on April 4, 16, and 23. This brings the total number of eruptions for the year to 10.

May marks the start of the field season in Yellowstone, and geologists, geophysicists, and geochemists will begin a variety of field projects in the park this month. Some of the first work will include maintenance of GPS, seismic, and temperature monitoring stations. In addition, starting on May 10 geophysicists will install temporary GPS stations across the Yellowstone region. These stations, which will be recovered in October before the onset of winter, provide a seasonal densification of the Yellowstone ground deformation monitoring network and have been deployed annually for the past 15 years.

Seismicity
During April 2021, the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, responsible for the operation and analysis of the Yellowstone Seismic Network, located 43 earthquakes in the Yellowstone National Park region. The largest event was a minor earthquake of magnitude 2.5 located 15 miles northeast of West Yellowstone, MT, on April 27 at 3:07 AM MDT.

No swarm activity was observed in April.

Yellowstone earthquake activity remains at background levels.

Ground deformation
Deformation rates and styles at Yellowstone, as recorded by continuous GPS stations, have been steady over the past year. Subsidence of Yellowstone Caldera, which has been ongoing since 2015, continued at an average rate of 2-3 cm (about 1 in) per year. In the area of Norris Geyser Basin, no significant uplift or subsidence has been detected by a nearby GPS station since the start of 2020.

Iceland , Geldingadalur :

There have been considerable changes in volcanic activity in the most important crater of Geldingadalur. It now emits high jets of magma that are clearly visible from almost the entire southwest area. There was a change in activity last night and since then the eruption has been blowing magma higher into the air than what has been seen before.
Volcanology professor Þorvaldur Þórðarson says at the moment the eruption appears to be much more volatile than before.

“The activity is decreasing and the area of the lava field in the crater seems to decrease with it to some extent. And then the lava flow also decreases a bit, even the lava flow from the crater stops. The eruption then continues with considerable force and forms jets of magma higher than what we have seen before, probably around 300 meters high. They send projections of magma far enough from the crater. Some landed in the vegetation southwest of the crater and started a fire, ”explains Þorvaldur.

It is not clear whether the rash is on the decline or offensive.

“What is happening is that the gas that is released from the magma does not flow with the magma like it has so far, but it seems to come with certain impulses in the system and then relax. . It’s something that delays the upwelling for a while, then the pressure builds up and the eruption manages to get through that blockage and form these big jets of magma that we’re looking at, ”Þorvaldur explains.

He says it’s not possible to tell if a new fracture is opening, but he thinks it’s a fire rather than a new rash.

Iceland , Geldingadalur :

Progress of the eruption Updated 21.04. at 16:00

With the Fagradalsfjall eruption continuing for over a month, it is natural to ask how long the eruption will last. New fissure openings have formed several times since the eruption began and, in recent days, volcanic activity at the northernmost crater has ceased.

„It is not clear what this means for the progress of the eruption.“ says Sara Barsotti, volcanic hazards coordinator at IMO. „Since the eruption began about thirty days ago, it has been changing constantly. Presently, there is no magma flowing from the first crater that opened outside Geldingadalir. This, for example, reflects the constant changes, although it is uncertain if the crater is completely asleep”, says Sara. « Therefore, it is not possible to claim that these are the first signs that the eruption is subsiding. On the contrary, the latest summary of our colleagues at the University of Iceland shows that lava flow has not decreased. If anything, it has increased slightly in recent days « , Sara concludes.

Aerial photo of the northernmost crater at the eruption site, taken on Sunday 18 April. Judging from the picture, there seems to be no activity in the crater. (Photo: Icelandic Institute of Natural History).

A summary from the Institute of Earth Sciences states that the average lava flow for the first 30 days of the eruption was 5.6 m3/s. Compared to most other Icelandic eruptions, the flow is remarkably low and relatively stable. The measurements on the lava now show that there has been some increase in the last 1-2 weeks. The average flow for the first 17 days was 4.5-5 m3 / s, but for the last 13 days it is close to 7 m3 / s.

A comparison with other eruptions shows that despite the increase, the flow is now only about half of what occurred on average during the first 10 days at Fimmvörðuháls in the spring of 2010, which was a small eruption. A comparison with Holuhraun shows that the current flow is 6-7% of the average lava flow during the six months that the eruption lasted. In terms of lava flow, the closest historical example would be the effusive phase of the Surtsey eruption, which began in April 1964 and continued until the end of the eruption in June 1967.

The power of the eruption has increased in parallel with the opening of more craters

Below you can see an overview published on 19 April by the Institute of Earth Sciences of lava discharge from the Fagradalsfjall eruption. The results represent the total flow from all craters over a six-day period, 12-18 April. This is a slight increase from the average flow in the eruption and confirmation that in parallel with the opening of more craters last week, the power of the eruption has increased somewhat, the area of the lava has reached 0.9 km2 and the total volume is now over 14 million cubic meters.

The graphs above show, among other things, the development of the area and volume of lava and lava flow. Development of the area of the lava is not as « linear » as the development of the volume, but that is because to begin with, the lava field grew in thickness within Geldingadalur rather than spreading out. Ongoing work on processing geochemical and gas data is being done, and the graphs will be updated as soon as it is completed.

La Réunion Island , Piton de la Fournaise :

Press release of April 23, 2021 – 1:00 p.m.

The eruption that started on 04/09/2021 at 7 p.m. (appearance of the tremor) continues. The intensity of the volcanic tremor (indicator of a surface lava emission) over the last 24 hours has remained relatively stable and comparable to that observed the previous days.

– Over the last 24 hours, 10 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (between sea level and the surface) have been recorded under the summit craters.
– CO2 fluxes in the soil are still increasing both in the far field (Plaine des Cafres and Plaine des Palmistes) and in the near field (Gîte du volcan).
– Averaged over the past few days, no significant trend can be seen in the deformations of the building (neither in deflation nor in inflation). It could suggest a flow of magma
deep entering the superficial magmatic reservoir equivalent to the outlet flow of the reservoir which feeds the eruptive site.
– The SO2 fluxes measured by the DOAS « NOVAC » network make it possible to estimate lava flows.

Considering a partially degassed magma during the first days of the eruption, the maximum lava flow probably did not exceed 20 m3 / sec on April 9 and 10; the proportions of less degassed magma then probably increased over time, thus making it possible to estimate an average flow rate of the order of 24 m3 / sec for the day of 03/13 (with peaks up to 59 m3
/dry). Since a lower average flow, between 1.2 and 8.3 m3 / sec, is estimated for the period from 16 to 22/04. It should be noted that bad weather conditions can affect the accuracy of the measurements.
– The surface flows estimated from satellite data via the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Auvergne University) could not be estimated with precision in recent days given the bad weather conditions on the eruptive site.

Guatemala , Pacaya :

ACTIVITY:
The Pacaya Volcano Observatory reports that an incandescence was observed in the Mackenney crater overnight and early in the morning. This shows only degassing activity, rising with white columns composed mainly of water vapor to heights of 300 meters above the crater and dispersing up to 5 kilometers to the south. The lava flow on the western flank near El Patrocinio and El Rodeo has shown no progress, however, it preserves areas of high temperature and several outgassing vents with sulfur gases. The seismic stations around the volcano record internal tremors, associated with the movement of magma inside the volcanic building and the emission of gas.

The eruptive phase of the Pacaya volcano in Guatemala, which since February 5 has alarmed neighboring villages with powerful explosions and lava flows, « is over, » said the National Institute of Volcanology on Friday.

The 2,552-meter-high volcano, located about 25 km south of Guatemala City, exhibits only “a few weak explosions (…), little ash, water vapor and sulphurous gases. abundance, ”said Emilio Barillas, spokesperson for the National Institute of Volcanology (Insivumeh).

He explained that the lava rivers on the slopes of the massif, the longest of which is 3.8 km, « have not shown any progression in any direction » in recent days.

The civil protection spokesman added that the tip of the main lava flow solidified about 450 meters from the first houses of the villages on the side of the volcano, where residents and authorities had prepared plans to evacuation.

University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) and National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) reported that the explosive eruption at Soufrière St. Vincent (often simply referred to as “La Soufriere”) continued during 14-20 April, though at a decreasing frequency. Explosions and pyroclastic flows were reported on 13 April, as well as lahars in the Sandy Bay area. During 14 April seismicity continued to be characterized by episodes of tremor, about 13-15 hours apart, separated by swarms of small, long-period (LP) earthquakes.

An episode of tremor that began at 1135 was associated with increased explosive activity, though the emissions were gas rich and less energetic than previous events. Another episode of tremor began at 0230 on 15 April along with increased venting. Almost constant swarms of long-period and hybrid events were recorded through the day, punctuated by three brief episodes (less than 30 minutes) of low-level tremor. An episode of tremor began at 2100 and lasted 40 minutes, and was possibly associated with a minor increase in venting. For the first time sulfur dioxide emissions were successfully measured by ground-based instruments; scientists recorded 809 tons per day from a Coast Guard boat along the W coast.

Periods of tremor and near-constant swarms of LP and hybrid events were recorded on 16 April. An explosion at 0615 on 16 April generated an ash plume that rose about 8 km (26,200 ft) a.s.l. and drifted W. A three-minute period of high-level tremor started at the same time and was flowed by over two hours of lower-level tremor. Sulfur dioxide emissions were again measured from the W coast, yielding a flux of 460 tons per day. The rate of LP and hybrid events dropped significantly at 2000. Sulfur dioxide plumes reached India.

Occasional satellite images of the summit showed a series of changes to the new crater, centered in the SW part of the summit crater. By 17 April an Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris scientist reported that the crater was about 900 m N to S, at least 750 m E to W, and about 100 m deep based on RADAR data. Several vents were either visible or inferred from points of emissions. Sulfur dioxide emissions were 232 and 391 tons per day on 17 and 18 April, respectively. A period of high tremor began at 1649 on 18 April. An explosion produced an ash plume that rose to 8 km (26,200 ft) a.s.l. and drifted S and SW. This explosion occurred 52 hours after the last one and was the 30th since the explosive phase started. The period of tremor lasted until about 2100 and was followed by ongoing small LP and hybrid events. The rates of those events dropped again, at around 0100 on 19 April. One rockfall was detected by the seismic network at 0139, and two were noted the next day. At 0400 on 20 April a lahar was detected by the seismic network and lasted for 30 minutes; it possibly traveled down the SE flank.

During 15-19 April NEMO reported details about the people that have evacuated. The total number of displaced people was 12,775 by 19 April, with 6,208 people in 85 public shelters and 6,567 people (1,800 families) in private shelters. There were no casualties caused by the eruption.

Iceland , Geldingadalur :

IMO reported that the fissure eruption in the W part of the Krýsuvík-Trölladyngja volcanic system, close to Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes Peninsula, continued during 14-20 April. Lava flowed from about eight vents and the flow field continued to expand; on 14 April a new hiking trail (“A”) had been covered. Volcanic gas emissions were at dangerous levels during 14-15 April so the eruption site was closed to the public. At about 1500 on 17 April a new vent was confirmed to have opened. It was small and close to another crater, possibly the one that had opened on 13 April. Lava was not flowing from the northernmost crater (the first that had opened outside Geldingadalur) during 18-20 April.

The eruption had been ongoing for 30 days by 17 April. Based on a report from University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences, the average lava-flow rate during the first 17 days of the eruption was 4.5-5 cubic meters per second but had increased to 7 cubic meters per second over the previous 13 days. During 12-18 April the flow rate was closer to 8 cubic meters per second, a slight increase over the recent average. By 19 April the area of the flow field was 0.9 square kilometers and the total volume was over 14 million cubic meters.

IMO warned visitors that new fissures could open without adequate visible warning, especially in an area by Litla-Hrút, just S of Keilir, `where seismicity was concentrated. They also warned of increased gas emissions hazards. The Aviation Color Code remained Orange due to the lack of ash and tephra emissions.

Japan , Sakurajima :

JMA reported that during 12-19 April incandescence from Minamidake Crater (at Aira Caldera’s Sakurajima volcano) was visible nightly. There was a total of nine explosions and one eruptive event. Ash plumes rose 1-2 km above the summit and bombs were ejected 800-1,300 m away from the crater. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was high at 2,400 tons per day on 12 April. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a 5-level scale).

La Réunion Island , Piton de la Fournaise :

Press release of April 21, 2021 – 4:00 p.m.

The eruption that started on 04/09/2021 at 7 p.m. (appearance of the tremor) continues. The intensity of the volcanic tremor (indicator of a surface lava emission) over the last 24 hours has remained relatively stable and comparable to that observed the previous days.

No direct observation of the eruptive site could be made today given the very bad weather conditions on the volcano.
– Over the last 24 hours, 3 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (between sea level and the surface) have been recorded under the summit craters.
– CO2 fluxes in the soil are still increasing both in the far field (Plaine des Cafres and Plaine des Palmistes) and in the near field (Gîte du volcan).

Averaged over the past few days, no significant trend can be seen in the deformations of the building (neither in deflation nor in inflation). It could suggest a flow of magma
deep entering the superficial magmatic reservoir equivalent to the outlet flow of the reservoir which feeds the eruptive site.
