MAYON VOLCANO BULLETIN 14 February 2018 08:00 A.M.
Mayon’s activity in the past 24 hours was characterized by sporadic and weak lava fountaining, lava flow and degassing from the summit crater. Although the upper slopes were heavily obscured, the seismic record indicated discrete episodes of lava fountaining that lasted five (5) to fifty (50) minutes. Throughout the night, lava flows and consequent incandescent rockfalls were observed in the Miisi and Bonga-Buyuan channels. Effused volumes of incandescent lava flows have advanced to 3.3 kilometers, 4.5 kilometers and 900 meters down the Miisi, Bonga and Basud Gullies, respectively, from the summit crater. Pyroclastic density currents or PDCs have deposited to the 4.6, 4.5 and 4.2 kilometer reaches of the Miisi, Bonga and Basud Gullies, respectively. Heavy rainfall yesterday also generated channel-confined lahars in the Anoling channel and sediment-laden streamflows in channels where PDC deposits were emplaced.
A total of ninety-four (94) volcanic earthquakes, most of which corresponded to lava fountaining events were recorded by Mayon’s seismic monitoring network. Electronic tilt and continuous GPS still record sustained swelling or inflation of the edifice since November and October 2017, consistent with pressurization by magmatic intrusion.
Alert Level 4 remains in effect over Mayon Volcano. The public is strongly advised to be vigilant and desist from entering the eight (8) kilometer-radius danger zone, and to be additionally vigilant against pyroclastic density currents, lahars and sediment-laden stream flows along channels draining the edifice. Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.
DOST-PHIVOLCS maintains close monitoring of Mayon Volcano and any new development will be communicated to all concerned stakeholders.

Kadovar , Papua New Guinea :
A lava build-up has been observed emerging from the sea just off the Kadovar Island volcano in Papua New Guinea.
Lava has been gradually oozing from a breached vent on the small island which began erupting last month, prompting the evacuation of its over 600 residents.
According to the Rabaul Volcano Observatory, Kadovar’s eruption continues at a low-level with mild steaming at the summit, and a gentle emission of unexplosive lava.
The Observatory’s acting assistant director Steve Saunders said a dome of lava had formed and reached about 200 metres out to sea.
« It’s not super hot. That would make it more fluid. It’s actually quite viscous, thick stuff. So it’s coming out as a large, blocky lava flow. So they can see it from fifteen kilometres away. It’s a small, black steaming lump in the sea, and there’s a gap between it and the island, so they estimate about fifty metres. »
Mr Saunders said the eruption was pretty stable.
« And then there’s just slow, gentle emission of a flat lava. I mean flat when it’s got no gas in it. So it’s not explosive or anything, » he explained.
« But they (volcanoes) fluctuate. It can actually pick up or die down. That’s the million dollar question. The island itself of Kadovar will be uninhabitable for a very long time. The population of six hundred… and it was already overpopulated. So the majority of the people won’t be able to go back for a long time, no. »

YELLOW LEVEL ■ (III): CHANGES IN THE CONDUCT OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY.
Following the activity of the CUMBAL VOLCANIC COMPLEX, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE informs that:
For the week of February 6 to 12, 2018, despite the low values of seismic energy emitted, there was an increase in seismic activity compared to the previous week, from 304 to 425 events. For this week, earthquakes related to rock fracturing predominated near the Mundo Nuevo crater (southwest of the Cumbal volcanic complex), with depths of up to 7 km from the summit (4700 m). ) and a local maximum magnitude of M 0.2 on the Richter scale.
The good climatic conditions of the evaluated week made it possible to record the emission of gas from the El Verde fumarol field, to the north-east of the volcanic complex; the emission columns were observed with little pressure, white color, low height and dispersion direction changing by the action of the wind.
The COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE is attentive to the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will continue to inform in a timely manner of the detected changes.

Devil’s Woodyard Mud Volcano , Republic of Trinidad and Tobago:
An inter-agency team of emergency responders reported that recent activity at the mud volcano at the Devil’s Woodyard in New Grant, Princes Town, seems to be subsiding.
In an update posted Tuesday afternoon, following three confirmed eruptions of the mud volcano the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government said the alert level for the site is currently level 1—the lowest on its disaster management scale— which means the volcano is in a state where it poses no immediate danger to human life and there is so far no indication, based on seismic and other tests, that a hazardous eruption is imminent.
“There has been some structural damage to the surrounding road but there’s a vast distance between the mud volcano and the nearest homes,” said Rishi Siew, the senior coordinator at the ministry’s disaster management unit. “A level 1 alert really means the regional corporation can handle the incident at this time since the volcanic activity does not disrupt or threaten the life or livelihood of any person or community.”
Homes evacuated as Devil’s Woodyard mud volcano erupts twice.
There have been two mud volcano eruptions at Devil’s Woodyard in Hindustan, New Grant this morning.
According to reports, the first eruption occurred sometime around 4 am, while another one happened just after 9 am.
The Newsday understands there has been no harm to human life but three homes in close proximity to the site have been evacuated.
Videos posted on social media showed the thick volcanic mud covering a large area.
There are also cracks in the ground as well as in the concrete footpaths around the site.
The Princes Town Regional Corporation’s Disaster Management Unit and other agencies are said to currently be on site.
The Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government took to its social media account a short while ago to confirm the eruptions and warn citizens to be cautious at the site.
