Subject: Activity report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz.

The level of activity continues at level: Activity level yellow or (III): evolution of the behavior of the volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE reports that:

During the last week, the various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to exhibit unstable behavior.
The seismicity caused by the fracturing of the rocks that form the volcano has undergone a significant increase in both the number of earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were mainly in the distal north sector, 7.3 km from the Arenas crater and, to a lesser extent, in the northeast and south-south-east sectors of the volcano as well as in the crater. The depths of the earthquakes varied between 0.4 and 7.7 km. The occurrence of a seismic increase in this type of activity is highlighted, recorded mainly during the period 07 to 10 September in the distal North sector. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week and during the seismic increase was 3.0 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on 8 September at 8:56 am (local time) in the North- Distal sector , at a depth of 7.2 km. This earthquake and other smaller earthquakes recorded during the seismic increase were reported to be felt by people in the Los Nevados National Park (PNNN) and residents in the area of ​​influence of the volcano .

The seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics within the ducts of volcanic structure   showed a slight increase both in the number of recorded earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This type of activity was mainly characterized by the appearance of multi-fluid, long-period and very long-period earthquakes, as well as tremor pulses. The recording of seismic signals of this type of higher energy, which may be associated with emissions of gases and ashes, is not excluded.
Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, satellite navigation systems (GNSS) and satellite imagery, to determine changes in inclination, position and shape of the volcano, continues to record some changes.

The volcano continues to emit water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values ​​obtained by SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcano area and the analysis of satellite images. In monitoring the information provided by the MIROVA and NASSA FIRMS portal, no thermal anomaly was identified during the week.
The gas and steam column reached a maximum height of 1100 m measured at the top of the volcano on 07 September. The direction of the dispersion of the column was governed by the direction of the wind in the zone, which during the week predominated towards the West and, to a lesser extent, towards the Northwest and the Southwest, in relation to the crater Arenas.
The Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at the level of yellow activity.

Activity:
A degassing of gray, weak fumaroles, at a height of 4600 m, disperses towards the West and the North-West. 12 to 15 low to moderate explosions were observed per hour, which expelled columns of gray ash at a height of 4500 to 4800 m (14435-15420 feet), which are dispersed 10-12 km west and the Northwest. They are accompanied by moderate to strong rumblings with moderate shock waves causing vibrations in the roofs of houses near the volcano. It is perceived sounds similar to the locomotive of a train continually. The explosions project incandescent pulses at 150-200 m, causing weak, moderate and strong avalanches on the crater’s outline, which are responsible for the fall of fine ash particles in the village of Sangre de Cristo and Yepocapa. We observe the advance of a lava flow of 800 m in length by the Seca ravine.

Dukono , Indonésia :

G. Dukono:
Activity level : Level II (WASPADA). Dukono (1229 m asl) has continuous eruption. From yesterday until this morning visually volcano looks clear until foggy. Through seismograph recording, there were 130 eruptions / emissions and it was observed a medium eruption column  gray , thick , with an altitude of 200-300 m above the peak, leaning toward the West.

Recommendation:
Communities around G. Dukono and visitors / tourists must not have activities, climbing, and approaching Malupang Warirang Crater within a 2 km radius.
