Activity bulletin of Tuesday, August 22, 2017 at 3:00 pm (local time).

The eruption that began on July 14 at 00:50 local time continues. The volcanic tremor (indicator of surface eruptive intensity), has remained stable and weak since yesterday.

– No volcano-tectonic earthquake was recorded under the summit craters during yesterday’s day.
– The trend towards a halt in inflation (swelling) observed over the last few days is now confirmed. Deflation (deflation) seems even to begin. This trend will be confirmed in the next few days.

The often unfavorable meteorological conditions, as well as the low fluxes observed, have not made it possible to make reliable estimates of the flow of lava by the use of satellites.

Weekly report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from August 15 to August 21, 2017
The level of activity continues at: Activity level yellow or (III): evolution of the behavior of the volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE reports that:

Over the past week, the various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to exhibit unstable behavior.
The seismicity resulting from the fracturing of the volcanic rocks showed a decrease in both the number of earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were mainly in the south-west and south-eastern areas of the volcanic structure and to a lesser extent in the distal north and in the vicinity of the Arenas crater at depths ranging from 0.6 to 7.0 km. The maximum amplitude recorded during the week was 1.8 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on 21 August at 01:20 (local time), located in the Arenas crater, at a depth of 1.5 km.

 

The seismic activity associated with the fluid dynamics in the ducts of the volcanic structure showed a slight increase in the number of recorded earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This type of activity was mainly characterized by the appearance of multiple fluid quakes of the long period and very long period, as well as low-energy tremor pulses. The recording of seismic signals of this type, with a greater energy that can be associated with emissions of gas and ash, is not ruled out.
Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, satellite navigation systems (GNSS) and satellite imagery, to determine changes in inclination, position and shape of the volcano, continues to record some changes.

The volcano continues to emit atmospheric water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcano area and the analysis of the satellite images . In monitoring the information provided by the MIROVA and NASMS FIRMS portals, no thermal anomaly was identified during the week.
The gas and steam column reached a maximum height of 750 m measured on the top of the volcano on 18 and 19 August.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at Yellow level.

A moderate, 1-minute-long eruption occurred at Cleveland Volcano beginning at 10:43 AKDT (18:43 UTC) on 22 August. The explosion was detected by seismic and infrasound (air pressure) sensors. Nothing has been observed in satellite data so far. We are keeping the Aviation Color Code/Alert Level at ORANGE/WATCH.

Remarks:
Cleveland volcano is not monitored with a full real-time seismic network and this inhibits AVO’s ability to detect unrest that may lead to future activity. We are able to detect explosive activity using infrasound and limited seismic instruments on the island.

The eruption 08-2017 of the Fuego volcano at this time is over, after more than 48 hours of constant activity, there is a decrease in its energy as can be seen in the RSAM graph, the measuring system Of the seismic amplitude in real time.

The OVFGO Volcano Observatory reports an average of 14 explosions with moderate characteristics, generating columns of ash that reach a height of about 4,900 m (16,076 feet) southwesterly. The explosions are accompanied by moderate rumblings, causing a shallow to moderate shock wave, causing vibrations in the roofs of houses near the volcano. Incandescent pulses at a height of approximately 100 to 200 meters above the crater generate weak to moderate avalanches on the crater contour.
As remnants of the eruption, strong avalanches are generated in the slopes of the Seca ravine (Santa Teresa), which leads to the emergence of fine particles towards this ravine and on the southwest flank.
