Activity Report for Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 3:00 pm (local time).

– No volcano-tectonic earthquake was recorded under the summit craters during yesterday’s day.

Misti , Ticsani , Peru :

Volcanoes Misti and Ticsani maintain a low level of activity.

The two volcanoes near Arequipa and Moquegua, respectively, are monitored by the Geophysical Institute of Peru through nearby seismic stations.

Nevados de Chillan , Chile :


During this period, 1053 seismic events were recorded, of which forty-nine (49) were classified as VT type volcanic events, related to rock fracturing processes, with maximum local magnitudes (ML) of 2, 6. The highest tremor of energy was located at 4.1 km south-south-east (SSE) of the active crater, at a depth of 3.4 km. Similarly, there were one thousand four (1004) earthquakes associated with fluid dynamics within the volcanic edifice, classified as long-term (LP) events, with a maximum reduced displacement value (DRC) Of 164.5 cm 2.

The images obtained through the cameras installed near the volcanic complex showed explosions around the currently active craters, with a height close to 300 meters, with the exception of 11 August, where the explosion reached a maximum height of 1000 meters.

According to data obtained from four (4) GNSS stations, which measure the surface deformation of the volcano, no significant variation was observed.
The lengths of control lines that cross the active craters show variations less than 0.1 cm / month, suggesting that there are no significant changes on the volcano. The data shown by one (1) electronic inclinometer also suggest that there are no significant processes related to changes in volcano morphology.


No emission of sulfur dioxide (SO2) into the atmosphere has been reported in the volcano sector.

No thermal alerts were reported in the area associated with the volcano according to the data processed by the average infrared observation of volcanic activity (MIROVA) (http://www.mirovaweb.it/).

During the current period, a less explosive activity of pulsatile nature was recorded, which resulted in emissions of gases and particles with maximum heights of 1000 m above the crater level. Monitoring station data suggest the action of a small apparent volume of magma that interacts with and destabilizes the surface hydrothermal system and induces minor explosions with material emission to the surface in a pulsatile manner.
Therefore, in the current scenario, it is possible that this process will continue with the generation of explosions of similar size or even larger than those recorded.
Due to the foregoing, the Volcanic Technical Alert is maintained at:
YELLOW LEVEL: Evolution of the behavior of the volcanic activity – Probable time for an eruption: WEEKS / MONTHS.
Note: It is recommended to restrict access to the high volcanic hazard zone within a radius of 3 km around the currently active craters.
