Activity bulletin of Tuesday 15 August 2017 at 15:00 (Local time).

The eruption that began on July 14 at 00:50 local time continues. The volcanic tremor (indicator of surface eruptive intensity), is relatively low and on average stable for 4 days (Figure 1).

– No volcano – tectonic earthquakes were recorded in the craters during the day.
– A slight inflation (swelling) of the entire terminal cone of the volcano is always observed (<1 cm since the beginning of the eruption).

After a weekend, a WE and a Monday very watered (55 mm rain Thursday, 20 mm Friday, 35 mm Saturday, 15 mm Sunday and 70 mm Monday – recording done on the rainfall station of the OVPF Crater Château Fort) this day is a bit drier for the time. However, the presence of clouds in the Enclos unfortunately did not allow to have a visual on the eruptive site nor to make the estimates of flow through the use of satellites.

Nevado Del Ruiz , Colombia :

Weekly report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from August 08 to August 14, 2017
The level of activity continues at level: Activity level yellow or (III): evolution of the behavior of the volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE reports that:

During the last week, the various monitoring parameters show that the volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to show unstable behavior.
The seismicity caused by rock fracturing showed a significant decrease in both the number of earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were mainly located in the south-west sector at an average distance of 3.5 km from the crater and, to a lesser extent, in the northwest, south-east and around the Arenas crater. The depths of these earthquakes vary between 1.5 and 6.7 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 2.0 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on August 13 at 11:09 am (local time) located in the South-West sector at a depth of 3.0 km.


The seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics inside the volcano ducts showed a slight decrease in the number of recorded earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This type of activity has been characterized mainly by the appearance of multiple fluid seisms, of the long period and very long period type, as well as tremor pulses with varying levels and duration of energy.
Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, satellite navigation systems (GNSS) and satellite images, to determine changes in tilt, position and shape of the volcano, recorded the cessation of the process of deflation reported in the previous bulletin.

The volcano continues to emit atmospheric water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values ​​obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcano area and the analysis of the satellite images . In monitoring the information provided by the MIROVA and NASMS FIRMS portal, a thermal anomaly was identified on August 14 at 01:45 (local time) with a value of 5 MW.
The gas and steam column reached a maximum height of 450 m measured on the top of the volcano on 8 August.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at Yellow level.

Activity Report, August 15, 2017

Rincón de la Vieja Volcano:
No relevant volcanic events have been reported in recent days. The hyper-acid lake maintains moderate convective activity near the center of the lake due to the existence of underwater fumaroles. Convection cells carry molten sulfur rich in dark minerals on the surface of the lake, such as pyrites (FeS2).


The image shows a pyrite-rich sulfur spot floating on the surface of the lake and dispersed by winds to the northeastern edge of the lake. The milky turquoise color of the lake indicates vigorous fumaroles at the bottom of the lake. The level of the surface of the lake relative to the edge of the crater is quite low due to the recent phreato – magmatic eruptions of May and June 2017 and the partial evaporation of the lake due to heat from the hydrothermal magmatic system under the crater.

Volcano Poas:
The Poas entered in a temporary rest phase with passive degassing since the beginning of August.
Significant tectonic activity (volcano – tectonic earthquakes) has not been recorded on the volcano since 8 August. Since August 9, there is no seismicity associated with a significant movement of fluids (tremor or low frequency type volcanic earthquakes or LF).

The degassing is observed through 3 volcanic plumes in the dry bottom of the crater where the hyper acid lake was located:
1) Mouth A (or Bocca Roja) emits water vapor, aerosols and magmatic gases at high temperatures (at least 500 ° C),
2) Water vapor, aerosols and lower temperature gases are emitted at low temperature (about 100 ° Celsius) through mouth B (Boca Azufrada) and mouth C. The plume rises to about 300 Meters from the bottom of the crater and is scattered near the surface, in the predominant direction of the winds towards the West-South-West. The incandescence at the bottom of the crater is maintained, but the intensity of the lights has decreased significantly in recent days. No ash emissions have been observed since 8 August, but in the last 24 hours notifications of sulfur odor have been received since: Alajuela (San Juanillo, Atenas) and Heredia (central canton and Getsemani De San Rafael).


Turrialba Volcano:
The Turrialba continues with frequent and prolonged passive emissions with small amounts of ash. The degassing of gases and aerosols continues passively. Seismic activity is characterized by volcanic tremor signals that extend from 10 minutes to 2 hours, with similar or longer intervals without tremor. Low frequency discrete volcanic earthquakes of low amplitude type LF (low frequency) are also recorded. Tectonic activity (VT type earthquakes) is absent. An intense incandescence due to the glow of the rocks continues to be observed during the night in the western crater through webcams.

The emission of a bluish plume rich in water vapor, magmatic gases and aerosols (very fine liquid particles or solids with dimensions less than 10 μm) continues to manifest in a persistent but passive form.
The plume rises between 100 and 300 m above the crater. The wind scatters it at low altitude, near the surface, in a West-North-West direction. Some reports of perception of sulfur smell have been received since Heredia (central canton and San Rafael’s Getsemani), but no ash falls.

OVSICORI-UNA remains vigilant on volcanic and seismic activity.

A sequence of seismic events at Bogolsof began to be observed beginning at about 8:00 UTC on August 15 (MIdnight AKDT) and are continuing. Similar sequences have preceded eruptive activity at Bogoslof. In other cases, such activity died down with no major explosive activity. No infrasound or lightning signals have been detected in the past day. No activity has been observed in partly cloudy satellite data.

The Aviation Color Code remains at ORANGE and the Alert Level remains at WATCH.
