Weekly report of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from August 1 to August 7, 2017
The level of activity continues at the level: Activity level yellow (III): evolution of the behavior of the volcanic activity.

Regarding the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the COLOMBIAN GEOLOGICAL SERVICE reports that:

Over the past week, the various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to exhibit unstable behavior.

The seismicity caused by the fracturing of the rocks that make up the volcano has shown a significant increase in both the number of earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were mainly in the southwestern sector and to a lesser extent in the northeastern parts of the Arenas crater and its surroundings at depths ranging from 1.4 to 5.4 km. An increase in this type of seismicity has been observed since 1 August. The activity was located at an average distance of 3.9 km to the southeast of the Arenas crater, at depths between 2.3 and 4.1 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 2.3 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on August 2 at 15:01 (local time) in the Southeast sector at a depth of 3 km.

 

The seismic activity associated with the fluid dynamics inside the volcanic structure ducts showed a slight decrease in the number of recorded earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This type of activity has been characterized mainly by the appearance of multiple fluoride earthquakes, of long period and very long period type, as well as tremor pulses with varying levels and duration of energy.

Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, satellite navigation systems (GNSS) and satellite imagery, to determine changes in inclination, position and shape of volcanoes, continues to record a deflationary process over the last few days.

 

The volcano continues to emit water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcano area and the analysis of the satellite images. In monitoring the information provided by the MIROVA and NASMS FIRMS portal, no thermal anomaly was identified during the week.

The gas and steam column reached a maximum height of 850 m measured at the top of the volcano on 03 August. The direction of the dispersion of the column predominated towards the northwest in relation to the Arenas crater.

The Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues at Yellow level.

Activity report for Thursday, August 10, 2017 at 3:00 pm (local time).

The eruption begun on July 14 at 00:50 local time continues. The volcanic tremor (surface eruptive intensity indicator) has been relatively constant for 4 days and remains at a low intensity level (Figure 1).

– A volcano-tectonic earthquake was recorded under the summit craters during yesterday’s day.
– A slight inflation (swelling) of the entire terminal cone of the volcano is always observed (<1 cm since the beginning of the eruption).

Due to poor weather conditions, no field reconnaissance and no estimate of satellite discharges could be made today.

Fuego , Guatemala :

In the last few hours, there has been heavy rainfall in the volcanic zone. For this reason, moderate lahars descend into the ravines: Santa Teresa, a tributary of the Pantaleón River, and canyons Ceniza, Las Lajas and El Jute , tributaries of the rivers Achiguate and Guacalate.
These lahars carry fine volcanic materials, blocks of diameters of about 2 meters, trunks and branches. The constant activity maintained by the Fuego volcano in the last few months has generated deposits of volcanic matter in the main ravines.

 

Due to the accumulation of moisture and constant rain in the volcanic zone, there is a possibility of descent of important lahars. These can damage access roads and vehicle crossings between Siquinalá and San Andrés Osuna, San Pedro Yepocaya and Sangre de Cristo and Rodeo in Guadalupe, among others. This indicates why precautions should be taken and do not stay inside the Canyons

Activity Summary:
Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting. Rates of deformation and seismicity have not changed significantly in the past week, and continue to be above long-term background levels.

Observations:
Small-magnitude earthquakes continue to occur beneath the volcano. During the past week, these were primarily beneath the caldera and upper Southwest Rift Zone, at depths less than 5 km (3 miles).
Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements continue to show deformation related to inflation of a magma reservoir beneath the summit caldera and upper Southwest Rift Zone.

No significant changes in volcanic gas emissions or summit fumarole temperature were measured.
