Activity report for Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 4:00 pm (local time).

The eruption begun on July 14 at 00:50 local time continues. The intensity of the volcanic tremor (indicator of surface eruptive intensity) has increased over the past 48 hours. Its intensity now reaches 60% of the value observed at the beginning of the eruption. (Figure 1).

Figure 1: Evolution of the RSAM (volcanic tremor and eruption intensity indicator) between 00:00 (20h UTC) on July 14th and 15h30 (11h30 UTC) on July 29th on the seismic station of RVL, located on the flank South of the volcano. (© OVPF / IPGP)

– No earthquakes have been recorded in the past 24 hours.
– The slight inflation of the summit area is continuing.

Estimates carried out by satellite methods via the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Ferrand) show a minimum flow rate of about 2 m3 / s.

Katla , Iceland  :

The color code of Katla volcano has been changed to yellow due to a glacial flood in Múlakvísl river and seismic tremor in nearby seismic stations. The tremor could be solely due to the glacial flood and unrelated to volcanic activity, but a subglacial eruption can not be excluded at this time.

SPECIALIST NOTE: Glacial outburst flood in Múlakvísl is slowly declining. Electrical conductivity increased rapidly between 6 and 7 this morning and peaked around 580 µS/cm. At 20:00 the conductivity measured about 250 µS/cm and continues to decrease. There is still lots of water in the river and people are advised to stay away due to gas pollution. The river is showing a dark colour and smells of sulphur.

Earthquake measuring 4.5 at Katla, Iceland’s most powerful volcano .

27 JULY 2017. To top of today’s series of earthquakes, a quake measuring 4.5 occurred at the mother of all volcanoes in Iceland, Katla tonight at around 10.30 pm. Another earthquake measuring 3.2 occurred a little later. Both eruptions were felt in nearby areas.

A specialist on duty tonight at the Iceland Met Office says that the earthquakes are nothing to worry about. It’s quite usual to have a few tremors when the ice cap melts in summer.

There is no connection between the earthquake in Katla tonight and the series of earthquakes occuring in Reykjanes today.

People warned to stay away from Múlakvísl river and great odour of sulphur rising.

29 JULY 2017. The glacial outburst flood at Múlakvísl in South Iceland has reached a peak. Electrical conductivity is now measured around 580 µS/cm and has increased rapidly the last hour, according to an announcement from the Icelandic Met Office. People are warned to stay away from the area.

A great odour of sulphur is rising from the river. The Iceland Road Adminstration is on standby to close the road.

The alert level in Katla has been moved from green to yellow but nothing points yet to the likelihood of an eruption although activity has increased.

Santiaguito , Guatemala :

Activity type: Pelean
Morphology: Complex of dacitic domes
Geographical location: 14 ° 44 ’33 ˝ latitude N; 91 ° 34’13˝ longitude W.
Altitude: 2,500msnm.
Weather conditions: Partly Cloudy
Wind: East 6 km / h
Precipitation: 0 mm
.

Activity:
The active dome maintains a white degassing which reaches a height of about 3000 m (9,843 feet) which has spread eastward. Early in the morning, low explosions resulted in white columns rising to a height of 3,200 m (10,499 feet), which spread eastward, causing ash falls on the areas of Finca San Jose And La Quina. Low avalanches were recorded on the dome.

Bulusan , Philippines :

BULUSAN VOLCANO BULLETIN 30 July 2017 8:00 A.M.

Bulusan Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded two (2) volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours. Degassing at the active vents could not be observed due to thick clouds covering the summit. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 69 tonnes/day on July 19, 2017. Precise leveling data obtained on June 14 – 23, 2017 indicated inflationary changes relative to February 2017. Meanwhile, continuous GPS measurements indicated short-term deflation of the edifice since January 2017. In general, the edifice remains inflated with respect to July 2016 based on continuous GPS data.

Alert Level 1 (abnormal) status remains in effect over Bulusan Volcano, which means that it is currently in a state of unrest probably driven by hydrothermal processes that could generate steam driven or phreatic eruptions. Local government units and the public are reminded that entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited and that vigilance in the Extended Danger Zone (EDZ) must be exercised due to the increased possibilities of sudden and hazardous phreatic eruptions.

Bezymianny , Kamchatka :

55.97 N, 160.6 E;
Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

A gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. A danger of strong ash explosions up to 32,800 ft (10 km) a.s.l. is remains. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A moderate gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. A lava flow continued to squeezing at the western flanks of the lava dome. Satellite data by KVERT showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano all week.
