Activity report on Monday 17 July 2017 at 16h30 (Local time)

The eruption begun on July 14 at 00:50 local time continues. After a new phase of increase during the night of 16 to 17 July, the intensity of the volcanic tremor (indicator of the surface eruptive intensity) decreased between 7 am and 1 pm local time (3h-9h UTC hour, Figure 1 ) Before experiencing again phases of large fluctuations.

These variations in the intensity of the tremor are conventionally recorded during the first days of eruption of the Piton de la Fournaise and correspond to the formation of the eruptive cone at a single point. This eruptive cone undergoes phases of construction and wall collapses (Figure 2) which modify its morphology and the pressure at its center, explaining these variations of the tremor.

– An earthquake was recorded on yesterday’s day near the Piton Crac on the eastern flank of the volcano.
– A slight deflation (deflation) is observed at the top of the terminal cone.

Estimations carried out using satellite methods via the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Ferrand) report minimum flows similar to those of the previous day in the order of 1 to 3 m3 / s.

A moderate eruptive activity of the volcano continues. An ash plume extended about 57 km to the south-south-west from the volcano.

Eruptive activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 26,200-32,800 ft (8-10 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Activity Summary:
Kīlauea Volcano continues to erupt at its summit and from the Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent on its East Rift Zone. The episode 61g lava flow from Puʻu ʻŌʻō continues to enter the ocean at Kamokuna. Surface flows are active above the pali, with minor activity on the coastal plain. These flows pose no threat to nearby communities. There have been no significant changes in seismicity levels across the volcano. Inflationary ground tilt continues at the summit. This morning, the summit lava lake level was measured at 25 m (82 ft) below the Overlook crater rim.

The Kamokuna delta continues to grow, as do the stress fractures.

Summit Observations:
Inflationary tilt has continued at the summit over the past day. The level of the lava lake has risen in concert with the tilt, and was measured at about 25 m (82 ft) below the Overlook crater rim this morning.  Summit tremor continues to fluctuate in response to variations in lava lake spattering and earthquakes occurred at normal, background rates. Summit sulfur dioxide emission rates remain high.

Puʻu ʻŌʻō Observations:
Webcam images continue to show persistent glow from long-term sources at Puʻu ʻŌʻō. A nearby tiltmeter recorded inflationary tilt over the past day, mirroring the summit tilt. Seismic activity is at background levels. The sulfur dioxide emission rate from the East Rift Zone vents has been steady over the past several months and remains significantly lower than the summit emission rate.

Lava Flow Observations:
The episode 61g flow is still active and entering the ocean at Kamokuna. Several large cracks have developed in the lava delta, running parallel to the coastline and spanning the width of the delta. These cracks increase the likelihood of a large delta collapse.

Sabancaya , Peru :

The number of explosions per day is higher than last week, with maximum displacement values of 39 cm2. Hybrid earthquakes associated with magmatic upwelling and ash emissions (Tremor) remain at a level similar to that observed in the previous period, while earthquakes of fluids (long period) have increased. There was an earthquake associated with rock fracturing (volcano – tectonic) of moderate magnitude (3.5 ML) located 6.5 km east of the crater.

Eruptive ash and gas columns increased over the previous week, reaching approximately 3500 m above the crater, spreading over more than 40 km in a northwesterly and an east direction, predominantly.

On the other hand, since July 8, a negative change is recorded in the deformation of the volcano, probably related to the expulsion of gases and ashes.
• The volcanic gas (SO2) flow recorded on July 16th, has a maximum value of 2959 tonnes / day.
• Six thermal anomalies were recorded, according to the Mirova system, with values between 1 MW and 17 MW.

Overall volcanic activity has increased. This trend can continue for the next few days.
