Activity Bulletin of Friday, July 14, 2017 at 3:30 pm (Local Time)

The eruption begun on July 14 at 00:50 local time continues. The volcanic tremor (surface eruptive intensity indicator) is maintained at an average level (about half that observed at the beginning of the eruption) from 9:00 local time – 5:00 am UT (Figure 1).

Following the reconnaissance survey carried out this morning with the assistance of the Air Force Section and the PGHM, the eruptive site was located more precisely 750 m east of the Kala-Pélé peak (August-October 2015) and 850 m west of Château Fort. It is located about 2.2 km to the north-east of the Piton de Bert (Figure 2).

At 9:30 this morning, during the surveys carried out by a team of the observatory, the crack extended over a total length of approximately 450 m. Seven lava fountains with a maximum height of 30 m were active (Figure 3). The farthest downstream fountain was beginning to build a volcanic cone from which escaped two branches of lava flows. Because of the cloudy cover on the eastern part of the volcano, the front of the flows could not be located.

The first estimates made by satellite methods via the HOTVOLC platform (OPGC – Clermont Ferrand) and MIROVA (University of Turin) report flows of the order of 22-30 m3 / s at the beginning of the opening of the crack.

A plume of SO2 oriented towards the east has also been detected (Figure 4).

« There are seven lava fountains with a maximum height of about 30 meters high and 200 meters long, and the crack opened on the southern flank of the volcano. De la Fournaise, « confirms Aline Peltier, director of the OVPF. A cone is formed downstream of the crack. The lava samples taken will allow information on the dynamics of the casting to be obtained once the samples have been analyzed in the laboratory.

A moderate eruptive activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 16,400-19,700 ft (5-6 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect low-flying aircraft.

A moderate eruptive activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data by KVERT showed a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano on 07 and 11-12 July; ash plumes extended for about 170 km to the south-west and south-east from the volcano on 10 and 11 July, respectively.

Fuego , Guatemala :

 Strong Lahar in the SECA AND MINERAL canyons, tributaries of the RIO PANTALEON.

Heavy rains on the volcanic complex are currently generating major lahares in the Seca, Santa Teresa and Mineral canyons, with a width of 35 meters and a height of 3 meters, resulting in pasty volcanic materials and blocks of 1, 2 and 3 meters in diameter as well as whole trees, trunks and branches. This event is one of the strongest recorded and is going to cause problems
On the roads between Sainte-Sophie and Yepocapa.

Passing near the observatory OVFGO, this hot lahar emits a strong odor of sulfur, during its descent.
Because of the current rains in the volcanic region, these lahars can descend into the canyons, Las Lajas, El Jute, Trinidad, Ceniza, Taniluya and both noted above, so it is useful to take the necessary precautions

Poas , Turrialba , Costa Rica :

Activity report of the Turrialba and Poas Volcanoes, 14 July 2017 – 11h00.

Turrialba Volcano:

The volcano continues its activity of exhalations and fumaroles. It manifests itself by constant degassing in the crater and a column of gas which has reached heights of up to 300 meters and which has been displaced by the wind in the southwest and northwest direction.
In addition there was an ash eruption yesterday afternoon at 03:00 h. The column of gas and ashes reached a height of about 300 meters and was dissipated by the wind in a south-westerly and north-westerly direction.


There are no reports of smell of sulfur or of ash falling. At 10:37. Today a small passive ash emission was observed whose column reached a height of 100 meters above the crater and was dissipated by the wind in a south-westerly direction. The seismic activity exhibits low intensity tremor signals and low frequency earthquakes (Lp). The cloudy conditions in the area do not allow continuous observation of the crater.

Volcano Poas:

Since yesterday, the volcano maintains an activity of exhalations and fumaroles in the crater, producing a strong degassing. The gas column reached heights of up to 500 meters and was dissipated by the wind in a southwest and northwest direction. There were reports of smell of sulfur last night in the towns of Naranjo and Grecia. The seismic signal has few low – frequency LP – type earthquakes or volcano – tectonic earthquakes. The tremor signal is of moderate amplitude. The cloudy weather in the area does not allow constant observation of the crater.

At about 06:28 am, Poás volcano erupted for about 10 minutes, according to the surveillance cameras located in the RSC bunker at the southern edge of the active crater. The eruption ended with the emanation of ashes with red tones due to oxidation processes, which is typical of the eruptions of the Poás volcano that occurred between June and July.
