Activity Report for Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 8:00 pm (Local Time)

Seismicity:

Since July 10, 2017, the seismic activity on the verge of the summit area of Piton de la Fournaise, has resumed significantly. Thus 155 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (<2 km deep) were recorded under the summit zone during the last 7 days. The majority of these earthquakes are located under the southern edge of the Dolomieu crater between 500 and 1000 m above sea level (in red in Figure 1).

Deformation:

Parallel to the resumption of seismicity, the deformations recorded on the permanent GPS stations of the OVPF show a resumption of inflation (swelling) of the building (Figure 2).

Geochemistry of gases:

CO2 concentrations in the soil at the Volcano Gap have been declining in recent weeks (Figure 3).

Balance sheet:

All these parameters show recharge, pressurization and embrittlement of the surface reservoir, located beneath the summit craters at about 2 km depth.

 

 

Activity bulletin of Friday, July 14, 2017 at 01:00 (Local time)

Following a seismic activity sustained for several days and a seismic crisis begun on July 13th around 10:20 pm local time, the eruptive treasure appeared around 12:50 pm on July 14th.

Analysis of the data and observation of our cameras show that the eruptive crack (s) opened on the southern flank of the volcano.

After a sustained seismic activity for several days and a seismic crisis that began on 13 July around 22:20 local time, an eruption began at 00:50 local time on July 14, 2017.

Shortly before its start, the Piton de la Fournaise volcano observatory recorded a net increase in seismicity at 22:20 local time, accompanied by rapid deformation, and warned of the probability of an imminent eruption. For this reason, the prefecture of Reunion Island has decided to activate the alert level 1 « probable or imminent eruption.  »
A little more than two hours after, the eruption began, at 00:50 local time on July 14, 2017.
According to information provided by the Volcano Observatory, the eruption occurs on the southern flank of the volcano.

Therefore, the prefecture increased the alert level to 2-2, eruption in progress.

Elevated surface temperatures were observed in one mostly clear satellite image over the past 24 hours. No unusual activity has been detected in seismic or infrasound data. Minor degassing seen in web camera views.

The level of unrest at Pavlof can change quickly and the progression to eruptive activity can occur with little or no warning. We continue to monitor Pavlof closely and will provide any new information about the status of the volcano when or if it becomes available.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

13 July 11.00 (13 July, 16.00 GMT)

Over the last 24 hours, the monitoring systems of the Popocatepetl volcano recorded 14 low intensity exhalations, accompanied by steam and sometimes ash. In addition, a volcano – tectonic earthquake occurred at dawn today at 05: 37h with a magnitude of M 1.9.

 

During the night, a light was seen above the crater, especially during exhalations.

During this report, continuous water vapor and gas emissions are observed, as the winds disperse towards the southwest.

CENAPRED asks not to approach the volcano and in particular the crater.

The volcanic alert semaphore of the volcano Popocatepetl is located in Amarillo Phase 2.

SUMMARY OF VOLCANIC ACTIVITY

The volcano remains with a high and continuous activity. Surface activity was characterized by explosions accompanied by emissions of incandescent blocks.

TECHNICAL APPENDIX AND OBSERVATIONS

Seismicity:
From 11:00 am (TL) yesterday until 11:00 am (TL) today, 4 episodes of harmonic tremor (TRA), 4 episodes of tremor (ERT), 31 events of long period (LP) and 33 explosions EXP) were recorded.

 

Observations, emissions and ash:
At dawn today, the volcano was discovered and it was possible to see an explosion accompanied by an emission with a moderate load of ash. This was greater than 500 m above the crater and dispersed to the northwest. Incandescent blocks were projected on the flanks of the volcano 800 m below the level of the crater. Thereafter, there was also observed a gas emission with a moderate ash load 500 m above the western crater. During the morning, the sky darkened.

Rains and lahars:
No rain was reported.

GENERAL INFORMATIONS

This report on a daily basis will be published at 12:00 (TL). In the event of an increase or change in the behavior of the volcano it will be immediately published a special report.
