Volcanic Activity Summary:
A moderate, 10-minute-long eruption occurred at Cleveland Volcano beginning at 03:19 AKDT (11:19 UTC) on 4 July. The explosion was detected by seismic and infrasound (air pressure) sensors. No satellite data is currently available. We are elevating the Aviation Color Code/Alert Level to ORANGE/WATCH.

Remarks:
Cleveland volcano is not monitored with a full real-time seismic network and this inhibits AVO’s ability to detect unrest that may lead to future activity. We are able to detect explosive activity using infrasound and limited seismic instruments on the island.

An eruption began at Bogoslof at 16:51 AKDT July 4 (00:51 UTC, July 5) that lasted 13 minutes and was detected in seismic, infrasound, and satellite data. Winds are generally to the southeast, and initial satellite data suggest the cloud may be as high as 32,000 ft asl. AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code/Alert Level to RED/WARNING.

Another eruption began at Bogoslof at 19:07 AKDT July 4 (03:07 UTC, July 5) that lasted about 11 minutes and was detected in seismic and infrasound data. There are no satellite data yet available. Winds are generally to the southeast. The Aviation Color Code/Alert Level remains at RED/WARNING.

Turrialba, Costa Rica :

Discovery of a small lake of lava.

The National Seismological Network (NSN) team and the National Laboratory of Materials and Structural Models of the University (LanammeUCR) discovered a small opening in the crater of Turrialba volcano filled with magmatic material.

According to the RSN, the discovery of this small lava lake about 50 meters in diameter occurred during an overflight with an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that monitors changes in the area of the active crater and the high slopes of the volcano to determine the potential for the generation of sediment and water flows down the slopes of the volcano, which may affect the national road network.
This is the reason why a reddish glow is seen on the crater at night, and is a clear proof of the rise of the magmatic material to the surface … / …

 

According to Dr. Mora, the system is open and without a lot of deep magmatic movements that increase the eruptive phase, with more energy. For the expert, who recalls that the lava is a viscous material, it is impossible to determine whether the lava lake will grow or disappear soon. It could disappear if the deep magmatic chamber increases its eruptive activity, causing explosions and increasing the width of the crater.

According to the NSS, « small lava lakes » are generally shorter in duration. There are other volcanoes in the world that have lava lakes that have lasted for years, including Erta Ale (Ethiopia), Erebus (Antarctica), Kilauea (Hawaii – United States), Nyiragongo (DRC) and Ambrym (Vanuatu). In recent years, other volcanoes have intermittently lava lakes, such as the Masaya volcano in Nicaragua, which had a similar cavity from 2015 onwards.

Nevado Del Ruiz , Colombia :

The level of activity continues: at the level of activity yellow (III) : changes in the behavior of the volcanic activity.

As regards the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:
Over the past week, the various monitoring parameters show that the volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to show unstable behavior.

The seismicity caused by the fracture of the rock showed a slight decrease in the number of recorded earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were predominantly in the south, south-east, northeast sectors, and to a lesser extent in the west, southwest, northern and Arenas craters at depths between 0.4 and 9.0 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.0 ML (local magnitude), which corresponds to an earthquake recorded on 28 June at 17:47 (local time), located in the Arenas crater at a depth of 1 , 4 km.

The seismic activity associated with fluid dynamics in the structure of the volcanic ducts showed a decrease in the number of recorded earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This type of activity is mainly characterized by the occurrence of several fluid seismic events, long period and very long period events, and tremor pulses of energy and variable duration … / …

Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, continues to record months of deflation and small intermittent inflation / deflation pulses that may be related to ash emissions.
In the tracking information provided by the NASA and FIRMES Mírová website, no thermal anomaly was identified during the week.
The columns of gas, steam and ash from time to time reached a maximum height of 650 m on 28 and 29 June.

The volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues in the level of activity Amarillo.

Ubinas, Peru :

Ubinas Volcano Activity Report, updated summary of the main activity observed from 16 to 30 June 2017.

1. Sismo-volcanic monitoring.
Seismic activity related to rock fracturing (VTS) and magma (hybrid) movements returned to low levels. Recall that in the previous period, a probable intrusion of magma had been recorded after the detection of an increase in the number and energy of these earthquakes.
During the last fortnight, there were four events of rock fracture type (VTs) per day, and three hybrid earthquakes per day, associated with the magma ascension movement. The energy levels of these types of earthquakes are low.

 

2. Satellite Surveillance.
  Thermal anomalies and SO2: The Mirova system (www.mirovaweb.it) has not detected thermal anomalies for this period. In addition, the GSDM-NASA satellite system « EOS Aura » (http://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) did not detect any significant anomalies of SO2 gas.

3. Visual inspection.
In the second half of June, no significant smoking activity was observed on the Ubinas volcano. The most remarkable aspect was related to a steam emission on June 25 from 5:00 to 9:00. These emissions reached an altitude of 300 meters above the edge of the crater.

Conclusions.
In general, the seismic – volcanic activity of the Ubinas remains low. During this period, recordings of VTS and hybrid earthquakes decreased.
Any changes will be reported in a timely manner.
