ETNA: Activity from 20 April to 14 June 2017.

The episode of effusive activity of an eruptive fracture system on the side and south base of the Southeast Crater (SEC), which began at the end of the morning of April 19, 2017, ended the following day. Thereafter, the volcano remained in a calm state for 6 days, before resuming his episode of more eruptive activity on the evening of April 26, 2017.

As observed at the beginning of the episode, from April 19 to 20, activity began very gradually, with the emission of lava from a vent located under the edge of the « mouth of the ex-saddle Between the old and the new SEC cone « , shortly after 18:00 hours UTC (= local time -2). The first photo on the left shows the lava flow on the southern slope of the SEC cone about 20 minutes after the start of the activity, photographed from Tremestieri Etneo (southern slope of Mount Etna). This first lava flow ceased after some time, and a new lava flow covered the first. Within hours, starting from two small mouths placed immediately upstream of the effusion mouth, there was a weak strombolian activity which gradually increased in intensity. At about 22:20, the « mouth of the old saddle » was also activated with a strong strombolian activity. Only then did the usual increase in the amplitude of the volcanic tremors occur, accompanied by the usual superficialisation of the source, which has passed from its previous position in correspondence with the Voragine crater (VOR) , to that of the SEC.

In the early hours of April 27th strombolian activity intensified, extending to a second eruptive mouth on top of the cone of the « ex-saddle mouth », just north of the previously active . At about 2:20 am, on the northern flank of the SEC cone, two new eruptive fractures were opened, which fed a lava flow to the Valle del Leone. At dawn it was evident that the explosive activity generated an ash plume that rose about 1.5 km above the top of the volcano before being pushed by the wind to the east. The second photo on the left, taken from the roof of INGV-Osservatorio Etneo (27 km south of the top of the volcano), shows the expanding lava flow of the southern slope of the SEC cone towards Valle del Bove , the strombolian activity of the two eruptive mouths above the SEC, and the ash column. In addition, some explosions were observed, hydromagmatic , in the Valle del Leone, when the lava flow from the north encountered snow residues on the ground.

Eruptive activity continued on the morning of April 27 and began to decline around noon, when strombolian activity ceased; lava flows remained energized for a few hours in the afternoon of the same day.

After this eruption, the activity of Etna underwent a remarkable change. There were no longer any eruptive episodes with lava emission. Conversely, during the first days of May 2017, there were numerous episodes, very short, of great amplitude of volcanic tremors, the displacement of the source of tremor towards the SEC, as well as its superficialisation. Although this phenomenon usually accompanies episodes of intense eruptive activity, in some cases no eruptive activity was observed, while in other cases the magnitude of tremor peaks was accompanied or followed by weak strombolian activity that began in the mouth next to the « mouth of the old saddle » on the night of April 27. During May, there were more than 35 episodes of transient increase in tremor amplitude, followed by four more in the first 10 days of June. For several days, however, a very weak explosive activity was observed, always from the mouth just north of that of « the former saddle », which was not accompanied by any change in the volcanic tremor.

Weekly activity bulletin of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 06 June to 12 June 2017
The level of activity continues: at the level of  activity yellow (III) : changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

As regards the monitoring of the activity of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:

Over the past week, the various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to show unstable behavior.


The seismicity caused by rock fracturing showed a slight increase in the number of recorded earthquakes, while the seismic energy released showed a decrease compared to the previous week. The earthquakes were located mainly in the North, the Northeast areas, and to a lesser extent in the South-East, South-West and Arenas crater , at depths ranging from 0.3 to 8 , 5 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.5 ML (local magnitude), which corresponds to an earthquake recorded on June 13 at 06:03 (local time), located north of the Arenas crater, at a depth Of 5.0 km.

The seismic activity associated with the dynamics of the fluids in the ducts of the volcanic structure showed a slight increase compared to the energy reported the previous week. This type of activity is mainly characterized by the occurrence of several seismic fluids events, of the long period and very long period type and the tremor pulses of varying energy levels and durations. Some of these seismic signals have been associated with emissions of ash into the atmosphere, as confirmed by cameras installed in the volcano region, official NPPN reports and civil aviation. The recording of seismic signals of this type, with higher energy levels, which may be associated with emissions of gas and ash are not excluded. It is important to remember that the ash emission processes can occur for several days and sometimes several times during the day, without involving an individual report for each episode.

Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers,   global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and satellite imagery to determine changes in inclination, position and shape of the volcano continues to record a deflationary process and intermittent inflation / deflation impulses linked to gas and ash emissions.

The volcano continues to emit large amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as shown by the values ​​obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcano zone and the analysis of satellite images. In the tracking information provided by the NASA and FIRMES Mírová website, no thermal anomaly was identified during the week.

The column of gas, steam and ash from time to time reached a maximum height of 1700 m on the top of the volcano on 10 June. The direction of dispersal of the column was in line with the direction of the wind in the region, which predominated during the week towards the Northwest and West of the Arenas crater.

The volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to activity level Amarillo.

The powerful explosive eruption of Sheveluch volcano began at 1625 UTC on 14 June, 2017. A giant ash cloud continues to be observed over the volcano about 7 hours after the eruption beginning.

Volcanic Activity Summary:
Activity of the volcano continues. Two ash cloud continues to drift to the north-east and to the south-west ftom Sheveluch volcano. A front of ash plume 1 is about 434 km to the north-east (azimuth 54 degrees) from the volcano. A front of ash plume 2 is about 235 km to the south-west (azimuth 236 degrees) from the volcano.

Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 32,800-49,200 ft (10-15 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Poas Volcano :

The Poas volcano was maintained with a strong passive degassing. Seismicity is dominated by low frequency volcanic earthquakes and volcano-tectonic earthquakes within the volcanic edifice. The plume does not rise more than 500 meters above the crater and heads north. No ash falls or sulphurous odors reported.

Turrialba Volcano:

The Turrialba volcano remains with passive degassing and occasional short exhalations with a low ash content. Seismicity is dominated by low – frequency volcanic earthquakes and occasional tremors of short duration and low amplitude. The plume does not rise more than 300 meters and dissipates towards the northwest. No ash or sulphurous odors reported.

Rincon de la Vieja Volcano:
No significant activity was recorded in the last 24 hours.

OVSICORI-A remains vigilant on seismic and volcanic activity.
