3D modeling reconstructs the magmatic chamber of the Stromboli volcano, located between 2 and 4 km deep.

Researchers at the Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) -Osservatori Etneo and Vésuvio National Center for Earthquake (CNT) were able to define for the first time its geometry thanks to the images captured by tomography, imagery widely used in medical imaging, as well as in geophysics, astrophysics and materials mechanics. This technique makes it possible to reconstruct the volume of an object from a series of measurements performed per slice from the outside of this object. The result is published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.


« The project was born from the need to learn more about the internal structure of the volcano, » explains researcher Domenico Patane of INGV-Oe. To this end, 20 temporary seismic stations were installed on the island, in addition to the 13 permanent seismic network, supplemented by 10 seismometers on the seabed, which allowed for the first time to explore the part underwater of the volcano.

« The monitoring and geochemical monitoring system of Stromboli in recent years has been stimulated by INGV, especially after the eruptive crisis of 2002-2003, » continues Patanè. The research incorporated data acquired in 2006 aboard the research vessel Urania, National Research Council (NRC), with records of local seismic events of the permanent network.


« It is possible to define for the first time the geometry of the surface magma chamber of Stromboli, which runs from the island to the Strombolicchio column. The latter represents the central chimney of the ancient volcano, which emerged about 200,000 years ago, in the northeast of the actual island of Stromboli and now almost totally eroded by exogenous agents, « explains Patanè.

The tomographic images present two abnormal regions, at different depths, containing the magma that feeds the persistent activity of Stromboli. Moreover, thanks to the tomographic images of the surface crust, there is now a 3D physical model of the structure of the volcanic velocity and we know the geometry of the magmatic chamber, which will contribute to the future to have better predictions of volcanic phenomena.

Activity report of the Poas and Turrialba volcanoes on 1 June 2017, updated at 11h00.

Poas: Volcanic activity in the last 24 hours.

During the last 24 hours, low-amplitude tremors were observed to increase slowly until moderate when this report was published. It has been possible to observe from several parts of the country the column of gas and steam which rises above the volcano. The wind at this moment is directed towards the west.

No eruptions were detected.

Turrialba: Volcanic activity in the last 24 hours.

The Turrialba volcano remains with periods of volcanic tremor signal of short duration and of low amplitude. A shorter signal took place at 2 o’clock followed by an ash emission up to about 2:30. At least one passive emission of diluted ash was confirmed for a few minutes at 4 hours. The ash column did not exceed 500 meters on the top of the volcano (~ 3800m above sea level). The main dispersal was westbound in the morning, heading north at the time of reporting. There were no reports of ash falls.


OVSICORI-A remains vigilant on seismic and volcanic activity.

The activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 26,200 ft (8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

Explosive activity of the Klyuchevskoy, 1st June 2017.

A moderate activity of the volcano continues. According to satellite data by KVERT, a weak thermal anomaly over the volcano was noted on 27 and 30-31 May, and 01 June. Explosions sent ash up to 6 km a.s.l. on 01-02 June, and ash plume drifted for about 400 km to the south-south-east from the volcano. Ash plume drifted over Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Elizovo, but ashfalls in the cities were not observed in connection with the weak content of ash particles in the plume.

Ubinas , Peru :

At present, the Ubinas volcano has shown, in recent weeks, a reduction of its seismic and fumarollian characteristics. These are tracked and reported to the IGP – Arequipa thanks to the network of telemetry stations that sends real-time information to the Cayma headquarters. Summary of activity between 16 and 31 May 2017.

Sismo-volcanic monitoring.
Seismic activity remains low as well as accumulated energy.
During this period, a total of 19 earthquakes were recorded, with evidence of the occurrence of a « Tornillo » type event, which, according to the eruption prediction model, is considered as a precursor, recorded earthquakes a few months before an explosive activity.
During this period there were no explosions and / or ash emissions.


Surveillance by satellite.
Thermal anomalies and SO2: The Mirova system (www.mirovaweb.it) did not detect any thermal anomalies for this period. In addition, the GSDM-NASA satellite system « EOS Aura » (http://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) did not detect any significant anomalies of SO2.

Visual Surveillance.
Throughout this fortnight (May 16 to 31), snow and rain have been observed, the smoldering activity of the Ubinas volcano has been mainly represented by sporadic steam emissions, alternating with prolonged periods of cloudiness and the absence of total emissions. The distinguished gases were whitish and reached a maximum height of 300 m above the crater, being scattered to the east and south-east.


In general, the seismic – volcanic activity of Ubinas remains low. During this period, the presence of « Tornillo » type events (precursor earthquake, recorded a few months before an explosive phase) was observed.
There were no explosions and / or ash emissions during this period.

In the last hours, the explosive activity of the Fuego volcano has been increasingly towards a range between 6 and 7 explosions per hour, with the expulsion of columns of gray ash at 4700 m. (15,420 feet) west towards the town of San Pedro Yepocapa.
Explosions generate rumblings and shock waves, moderate to strong, causing vibrations of roofs and windows in the villages of Morelia, Santa Sofia, Panimache, El Porvenir, Sangre de Cristo and others. Incandescent pulses from 300 to 500 meters above the crater and avalanches are observed along the flanks of the volcano.
