Activity report of the Poas volcano of 13 April 2017, updated at 21:15 h.

Seismic activity, soil inflation and changes on the dome and in the acid lake of the Poas Volcano began to show modifications first in seismicity, towards mid-February 2017, with an increase in the number of earthquakes Volcanic low frequency (LP). At the end of March 2017, earthquakes are at lower frequencies we see an increase in the amount of gases that are expelled through the vents and lake. The flow of SO2 increased from 20 tons per day at the end of March 2017 to more than 1000 tons per day today 13 April 2017. This high flow is similar to that measured in February 1982, which had given a value of 800 Tons of SO2 per day, the temperature in the dome was 870 degrees Celsius. In addition, gases show an increase in magmatic character (molar ratios between sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide, SO2 / CO2, which reached the highest measured values ​​from 2016, and corresponds to a purely magmatic composition ). Over the past two weeks, the lake level has increased despite the lack of rain in the last two weeks, its temperature has increased rapidly from 35 ° C to 64 ° C, as well as its acidity and concentration of chemical elements From the hydrolysis of magmatic gases and the dissolution of the rock. Geodetic measurements through GNSS instrumentation show an inflation of the volcano during 2017, up to 1 cm vertical and 3 mm horizontally. All these parameters indicate that between February and March a magmatic body has managed to ascend to a depth which allows degassing decompression and thus cause changes in stress and root rupture. An increase in the number of volcano-tectonic earthquakes (VT) was also reported from mid-March.

 

Eruptions of 12 and 13 April 2017.

The eruption of April 12, 2017 at 18:30 between the dome and the acid lake of the Poas volcano was directed mainly towards the west of the crater according to the impacts that the volcanologists of the OVSICORI-UNA found on 13 April on the edge of the crater (Figure 1A). Many impact craters were produced by falling fragments of old and cold rocks, about 0.5 m3 in size to 350 m from the new fumarole that appeared on April 7th. The collected rock material consists of approx. 95% chemically modified material and lacustrine sediments and the remaining material is slag-type and possibly fresh glass vesicles (FIG. 1B). The slag is very similar to the material emitted during the 1953-55 Poas poaching eruption, and most probably correspond to the previous layer torn off by the sudden release of gases and water. The presence of fresh glass will be confirmed in the next few days at the Petrology Laboratory of the OVSICORI-A. The material observed indicates that on the eruption of April 12, the phreatic component is dominant, if not exclusive. The seismograph recorded a duration of 40 minutes for this period and during this period, cracks opened in the outer southeast sector of the dome (FIG. 2).

Poas Volcano National Park officials and populations reported the fall of fine sediments and a sulfur smell around the crater, southwest in Fraijanes, and northwest in Bajos del Toro due to the eruption of 12 April. A flow of water, mud and rock descended into the Río Desagüe has also been reported. This flow created an increase in river flow of about 2 meters. The Agrio River and Quebrada Gata also transported part of the eruptive material. Fortunately, these flows generated no assignments of crossing structures (bridges), and roads (Geol. Blas Enriquez of the National Relief Commission).
On April 13, at 15:46 pm, 2 strong water eruptions in the lake were recorded. These eruptions have emitted large fragments of rock, sediment and lake water as well as a large amount of water vapor and gas from the crater lake. Fragments of rocks and sediments destroyed the OVSICORI webcam to the north. The appearance of this eruption is evidence of a strong interaction of a magmatic body with the hydrothermal surface system.

The activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700-26,200 ft (6-8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.

A moderate activity of the volcano continues. According to data by observers from South Kamchatka Sanctuary, explosions sent ash up to 7 km a.s.l. on 09 April. Satellite data by KVERT showed ash plumes drifted from the volcano for about 50 km to the north-east on 09 April, and about 170 km to the south-east on 10 April.

The National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) describes the following information obtained from the monitoring equipment of the National Volcanoes Monitoring Network, processed and analyzed at the South Andes Volcanological Observatory, interpretation center of the SERNAGEOMIN data:

Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 6:01 AM local time (09:01 GMT), the monitoring stations installed near the Guallatiri volcano recorded one (1) earthquake associated with rock fracturing (volcano – tectonics). The event was located 11.2 km southwest (SW) of the main crater.

 

The location was obtained as follows:

LONGITUDE: 69 ° 11 ’23 .40 « West
DEPTH: 2.4 km
LOCAL MAGNITUDE: 3.0 (ML)

OBSERVATIONS:
At the time of this report, there were five (5) smaller earthquakes and subsequent replicas. There is no information from the authorities or communities on the perception of these events in neighboring regions.
The level of technical volcanic alert remains at the green level.
SERNAGEOMIN will continue to monitor online and report in a timely manner on any changes in volcanic activity in the region.
