Nevado Del Ruiz , Colombia :

The Colombian Geological Survey reports to the authorities and the community that today, on April 7, 2017, at 01:23 (local time), a significant energetic seismic signal was recorded, related to the movement of fluids inside the volcano Nevado del Ruiz. This signal may be associated with an emission of gases and ash into the atmosphere, but given the weather conditions in the area the emission could not be confirmed by the webcams.

Importantly, visual appreciation of ash emissions is favored by atmospheric conditions. Although this type of seismic signal occurs several times during the day, the associated ash emissions can not always be visually verified.

Always on April 7, 2017, were recorded episodes of volcanic tremor, of variable energy level in the volcano Nevado del Ruiz. These signals are associated with emissions and ash in the atmosphere, some of which have been confirmed by webcams and others not, depending on the weather conditions in the area.



Ash falls are possible on populations that are in the direction of the wind regime, which is currently mainly northwest of the volcano, such as Manizales and Villamaría.
The recording of these seismic signals and associated emissions of ash can continue even at higher energy levels. It is important to remember that the ash emission processes can occur for several days and sometimes several times during the day, without involving an individual report for each episode.

The level of activity continues: at the level of activity yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of the volcanic activity.

The activity of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 19,700-26,200 ft (6-8 km) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft.


The explosive eruption of the volcano continues. Satellite data by KVERT showed the volcano was quiet on 01 April; explosions sent ash up to 7 km a.s.l. on 02 April, and a weak emission of ash continues. Ash plumes drifted for about 200 km to the east and south-east from the volcano on 02-04 April. A weak thermal anomaly over the volcano was noted on 03-04 April.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

7 April 11.00 (16.00 GMT April 07)

Over the past 24 hours, by the monitoring systems of the Popocatepetl volcano, 56 low intensity exhalations, accompanied by steam, gas and ash have been identified. In addition, five explosions were recorded: yesterday at 23:04 h, today at 6:02 h, 06:52 h, 07:48 h and 09:41 h. In addition, it was recorded 04 minutes of harmonic tremors of low amplitude.
At dawn, a glimmer was observed in the crater area, which increased during some episodes.

At the time of this report a continuous emission of volcanic gases is observed in an easterly direction.

At approximately 13:45 h, an increase in volcano activity was observed; It was identified from 15:52 h, 33 explosions, accompanied by a steady emission of water vapor and slight amounts of gas and ash, in the southeast direction.
It should be noted that the level of volcanic alert phase 2  continues in Amarillo.

Poas , Costa Rica :

New fumaroles appear south of the active crater on April 7, 2017 approximately. at 11 am.

Officials of PNVP (Poas Volcano National Park) and two guides have informed OVSICORI of the observation of the presence of new fumaroles in the crater of the volcano. On 6 April, 2017, a group of volcanologists from the OVSICORI sampled dome gas and acidic lake water in the bottom of the crater under good conditions, and these fumaroles were not present (Figure 1). Today, in the morning, there was a dense fog in the Poas crater, but around 10:50 am, PNVP officials, tour guides and park visitors who were on the observation tower observed for a few minutes the lake, the dome and the beach area that lies to the south of the lake.


To their surprise, they saw and recorded a new fumarole located about 200 meters south of the edge of the acid lake (Figure 2). The witnesses estimate that the height of the plume of steam emerging by the new fumaroles is about 20 meters above the ground. They also observed that the dome’s fumaroles are more vigorous and higher than the previous days. A flow of water is observed between this new fumaroles and the lake shore, but better weather conditions are needed to determine whether the water comes from the new fumaroles or the lake. People near the crater reported a strong pungent and suffocating odor and some reacted with a cough and irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, and a bitter taste in the mouth. These descriptions show the presence of a high concentration of fresh magmatic gases such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen chloride (HCl), among others.

Since early 2017, the OVSICORI-A volcano monitoring group has observed significant changes in seismic activity and crustal deformation of the summit region of the volcano and more recently a marked and rapid increase in gas flow of fresh magma and heat through the lake and the dome.

Together, these observed geophysical and geochemical changes suggest the appearance of fresh magma intrusion at relatively deep levels towards the surface. It is very important to strengthen the monitoring of the volcano and take preventive measures to prepare for sudden phreatic explosions that are potentially hazardous to people in the crater area.

Banda Api , Indonesia :

Nearly 1,000 to be evacuated as volcano seismic activity rises .

6 APRIL 2017. Indonesian authorities are preparing to evacuate nearly 1,000 people living in dangerous zones as Banda Api volcano in Maluku province of eastern Indonesia has turned more active, officials said Thursday.

Mount Banda Api in Maluku Tengah district has several times issued tremors since days ago, forcing the authority to ban any activity in the radius of one kilometer from the crater, Devi Kamil, head of observation unit at the national volcanology agency said.

« We have issued a recommendation for evacuation. There must not be any activity in the area of one kilometer from the crater, » the volcanologist told Xinhua over phone. « Should the frequency of the tremor keep rising, eruption may happen. But, if it doesn’t, poisoned gas will spread from the crater, » Kamil added.

Bob Rachmat, head of operational unit at the disaster agency in the district said that the agency had already mapped the area, saying that many residents still live in the slope of the volcano.

« There are over 770 people living in the area of one kilometer from the crater. All of them must be displaced as soon as possible, » he told Xinhua by phone from the district. Mount Banda Api erupted in 1998, killing 3 people with over one thousand others evacuated, according to the national volcanology agency.

The eruption trigger flows of hot lave to villages near the slope of the volcano. Indonesia, an archipelago country with 17,500 islands, is home to 129 active volcanoes.
