Following the eruption of 31 January – 27 February 2017, the volcano-tectonic activity under the Piton de la Fournaise remained at a low level during the month of March. Thus, during the month of March 2017, the OVPF recorded a total of:

8 superficial volcano-tectonic earthquakes (0-2 km deep) under the summit craters;

1 deep earthquake (> 2 km deep);


299 collapses (in the Crater Dolomieu and at the level of the ramparts of the Enclos  Fouqué);

25 local earthquakes (under the island, Piton des Neiges side);

5 regional earthquakes (in the Indian Ocean zone).


The inflation phase (swelling) of the volcanic edifice observed before and during the eruption of 31 January-27 February, stopped around the 7th of March. Since no significant deformation is recorded (Figure 1).

Gas Geochemistry

The flows of SO2 into the air are below the detection threshold.
The CO2 concentrations in the soil measured at the remote stations (Plaine des Cafres and Plaine des Palmistes) and at the level of the Gite du Volcan are at low levels.

The volcano maintains its strong activity. During last night, the activity was observed with incandescent blocks that rolled from the crater on the flanks of the volcano. This morning, steam and ash was emitted to the southwest.



Seismicity: From 11h00 (TL) yesterday until 11h00 (TL) today, 5 episodes of harmonic tremor (TRA), 1 episode of ERT, 17 events long period (LP) and 31 explosions EXP) were recorded.
Observations, emissions and ashes: A gleam, this last night was observed in crater, the blocks rolled on the flanks of the volcano up to 1000 meters below the summit. During the morning we observed a steam emission moderately charged with ash that reached a height of 1000 meters above the summit and headed southwest. Currently, the volcano is cloudy.
Rains and lahars: There have been no rains.

Fuego , Guatemala :

The volcano Fuego emits ashes at 3 miles high.

3 APRIL 2017. The volcano Fuego, located more than 30 miles west of the city of Guatemala, frequently erupts. It stopped in the early hours of Sunday morning after more than half a day of activity, leaving behind lava remains.
« The third eruption (this year) of the volcano Fuego ended after 4 pm, » said Sunday morning the national institute that monitors volcanic, seismic and meteorological data.


Columns of volcanic ash from Fuego reached more than 16,000 feet, falling nearly 50 miles from the volcano, into the areas of Atitlan Lake, Chicacao Lake, Mazatenango, Retalhuleu, El Palmar and In other places, officials said.

  The third eruption of the Fuego, ended after 16 hours of the eruption. The volcanic complex is observed with remnants of lava flow over 3 kilometers long, in the ravines of Santa Teresa, Las Lajas and Trinidad. Degassing sounds and small rumblings are still observed as well as low to moderate explosions.

The ash plumes have traveled more than 80 kilometers to the west, there are reports of ash falls in the area of Atitlan Lake, Chicacao, Mazatenango, Retalhuleu, El Palmar and others in this area. The columns reached 5,000 meters (16,404 feet). The seismic station GR3 records normal seismic activity.

Turrialba , Costa Rica :

This clear and sunny week has allowed volcanologist Geoffroy Avard of the Observatory of seismology et Volcanology (OVSICORI) to capture images that confirm what the thermal cameras show: the temperatures of the Turrialba volcano are increasing and now oscillate around 800 ° Celsius.

On Monday morning , Avard and the volcanologist Monserrat Cascante could climb to the top of the volcano, see the changes in the active crater and measure the heat that focuses on the inner walls. In the previous measurements, in 2012, a temperature of 600 ° was raised.
« We now know a little better how the crater is, » said the scientist. The frequency of infrared light changes from deep red to yellow on the rocks inside the volcano, depending on the amount of heat that concentrate on the passage of gases.
On Monday « it was the first time that the environmental conditions allowed me to see in the crater so clearly. I was struck by this mouth that I did not know and which emitted a noise and vibrations to channel the gas.



Juvenile ashes:

OVSICORI analyzes also reveal that the amount of juvenile ash has changed considerably on the volcano.

Recent emissions of multiform ash and slag involve the presence of lava. In 2010, juvenile material was 1%, then went to 5%. In 2015 it has risen to nearly 20% and in recent months, there are already 40% juvenile material or « ash of magma » and rocks ejected by the volcano.
