Nevados de Chillan: A crater 100 meters in diameter formed

With a new aerial survey by helicopter of the volcanic complex Nevados de Chillan, the National Service of Geology and Mining (SERNAGEOMIN) showed the union of two craters formed by the explosions. The institution maintains the yellow alert level, in effect since 31 December 2016 for this volcano.

During the aerial flight, he had five explosions in about an hour, most of which reached a height of 900 meters above the active crater, with diffusion of particles and pulverized rocks towards the southeast sector of the volcano. After the appearance of explosions, it was possible to corroborate the permanence of low-intensity fumaroles, preferably white, in the Nuevo and Arrau craters.
The images taken at the top of the complex showed low temperatures similar to those obtained in previous overflights, which did not exceed 75 ° C

It should be noted that it was on 17 March that SERNAGEOMIN, for the first time since the beginning of the eruptive cycle, recorded a qualitative change in the internal situation of the volcano, suggesting that « the activity of the deep magmatic body Has increased to more superficial levels, generating a process of greater interaction with the surface hydrothermal system « , which explains the relative increase in frequency and magnitude of explosions.

 

This, according to the SERNAGEOMIN, is explained because the heat of the deep magma reservoir heats the shallower, more superficial water of the volcano, which involves the production of steam that drives the rock particles generated in earlier eruptions. Therefore, the institution indicated that one of the priorities is to monitor the source of emissions, to determine whether the volcanic ash originates from a new magma, and not just from previous eruptive cycles.

Kambalny volcano erupts for first time since reign of Catherine the Great

An 8 km high plume was recorded from the southernmost major stratovolcano on the Kamchatka peninsula.


The eruption is believed to be the first since 1769, and tourist organisations have been warned not to venture towards the 2,156 metre high volcano.
It is on Russia’s famed Land of Fire and Ice, the Kamchatka peninsula, in the extreme east of the country.
A source at the Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team (KVERT) told IA Kamchatka: ‘Currently, the eruption of the volcano continues. The ash plume was recorded today at about 9 am.
‘The propagation zone is about 255 km in the direction of Cape Lopatka.
‘The trail passes south of Shumshu Island in the Kuril Island chain.
‘There are no settlements on the way.’

 

The eruption was assigned the orange code for aviation danger.
Kambalny volcano (Kambalnaya Sopka) is located in the South Kamchatka volcanic zone in the south of the Kambalny volcanic ridge, southwest of the Kurilsky lake, in the sources of the Kambalnaya River.
Ash emissions up to 6-8 km can happen any time, say the experts.

The nearest settlement is Ozernovsky in Ust-Bolsheretsky district, some 77 km from Kambalny.

Sakurajima , Japan :

Sakurajima volcano (Kyushu Island, Japan): new explosive eruption .

25 MARCH 2017. After several months of quiet, a vulcanian-type explosion occurred this afternoon (25 Mar) shortly after 18h local time(18:03). The explosion seems to have come from the Minamidake summit crater and was relatively powerful; it appears to have produced small pyroclastic flows but only a relatively low ash plume (JMA indicates 500 m, but this is probably underestimated).

 

The volcano continued to vent ash (strombolian activity ?) for several hours following the initial eruption, then quieted down, but had a second eruption at 22:28 local time, with an eruption cloud rising 1400 m. Whether the volcano is entering now a phase of more frequent explosions (as it had been doing typically during most of the past years until 2015) remains to be seen.

Popocatepetl , Mexico :

Over the past 24 hours, seismic recordings of the Popocatepetl volcano monitoring system have identified 35 low-intensity exhalations, accompanied by steam, gas and small amounts of ash.

 

At dawn, a glimmer was observed in the area of the crater that increased during some episodes.
