MEXICO CITY: National Emergency Preparedness Coordinator, Luis Felipe Puente, said yesterday afternoon, the University of Colima made an overflight of the Colima volcano.

He added that the permanent monitoring of the volcano is maintained in coordination with the civil protection units of the State of Jalisco and Colima, as well as the institution.


This afternoon, the Colima volcano recorded an exhalation of 2.5 kilometers high in an easterly direction.
On Saturday at 4:05 pm, the volcano reported an explosion that generated a two-thousand-five-meter high column and also caused two landslides that fell on the south side of the volcano.

This high-ash column went to the populations of Comala and Colima where ash falls were recorded.
Two hours later at 18:02, the volcano recorded another eruptive event which formed a column of 1800 meters high. Like the first, the cloud of ashes headed for the town of Colima, where ash falls.


Scientists point out that this explosive period is generated by the dome that has been held since last October at the top of the crater.

Due to the activity of the volcano, civil protection units of Colima and Jalisco triggered a preventive alert in the volcanic zone and retained an exclusion zone of 8 kilometers around the summit in the state of Colima and 7, 5 kilometers in the state of Jalisco.

The level of activity continues at the level of  activity yellow  or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

As regards the monitoring of the activity of the Cerro Machin volcano, the Colombian Geological Service reports that:

Seismic activity related to the fracturing of volcanic rock under the volcano showed an increase in the number of earthquakes and seismic energy released compared to the previous week. The recorded earthquakes were mostly located northwest and west of the main dome and, to a lesser extent, to the east of the main dome.


The depth of the events was between 3.2 and 4.9 km. The highest-energy earthquake was recorded on January 8 at 7:03 pm (local time) during an increase in seismic activity of the volcano, a magnitude of 1.1 ML (local magnitude), located under the main dome of the North-North-West sector, at a depth of 3.2 km. The other parameters monitored show no significant change.

The COLOMBIAN Geological Survey closely monitors the evolution of the volcanic phenomenon and will continue to report in a timely manner on any changes that may occur.

    The ash cloud and fire in the photo of Colima is really interesting. It isn’t the normal puffy, rolling cloud as often seen. It is almost feathery in a way. Is this caused by a different composition of ash and gasses or just an anomaly?

      I do not think, Pamela, there is no difference in composition.
      Just that sometimes, there is more compressed gas under the volcano, which makes big clouds, dense.

      On the Colima, may be less pressure, more « place to go out ».
