Volcanic Activity Summary:
The level of seismic activity at Bogoslof volcano increased abruptly at about 20:23 (11:23 AKST) and persisted at a high level until about 20:29 UTC (11:29 AKST). Previous increases in seismicity similar to this one have resulted in volcanic plumes as high as about 30,000 feet asl. Nothing yet has been observed in satellite data and lightning has not been detected but a plume likely has been generated. It remains possible for additional ash-producing eruptions to occur at any time with limited precursory unrest and little warning. AVO is monitoring the volcano closely and will provide additional information if and when it becomes available.

A second explosive event has been detected at Bogoslof volcano. An abrupt increase in seismicity began at about 21:35 UTC (12:35 AKST). Both events have been observed by pilots. The first event at 20:23 UTC produced an eruption cloud to 18,000 ft asl. The estimated height of the second event from 21:35 UTC was 14,500 ft asl. Neither eruption cloud has been visible yet in subsequent satellite data. The altitude of the meteorological cloud deck is variable from about 10,000 ft to 12,000 ft. Additional ash-producing eruptions may occur at any time with limited precursory

KVERT reported strong gas-and-steam emissions at Bezymianny during 31 December 2016-6 January 2017 and a daily thermal anomaly over the volcano. The Aviation Color Code remained at Orange.
Activity of the volcano after the intensification on 05-24 December gradually decreased. Strong gas-steam activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data by KVERT showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano.

SUMMARY OF THE VOLCAN ACTIVITY

The volcano maintains its high activity. In the afternoon yesterday, we could see an emission, mainly of steam, with a low ash content, about 2000 meters above the crater, directed towards the Northeast. Currently, the volcano sector Is cloudy.

TECHNICAL AND OBSERVATIONS ANNEX

Seismicity:
Since 11:00 yesterday until 11:00 am (TL) today, 3 episodes of tremor (TRE), two episodes of tremor harmonic (EMR), 35 events long period (LP) and 29 explosions (EXP) were registred .

Observations on emissions and ash:
In the afternoon yesterday, we could see an emission, mainly of steam, with a low ash content, about 2000 meters above the crater, directed towards the Northeast. Currently, the volcano sector
Is cloudy.

Rains and lahars: There were no rains or lahars.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The present report on a daily basis will be published at 12:00 (TL). In the event of an increase or change in the behavior of the volcano, a Special Report shall be issued immediately.

Lopevi , Vanuatu :

16.30°S 168.21°E Summit (1 413 m)
Current Vanuatu Volcano Alert Level: Level 3

Based on observation done by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department shows that the Lopevi volcanic activity has changed and its Alert Level is increased to Level 3.
This means that the Lopevi volcanic activity is in minor eruption stage. At this Alert Level, the volcanic activity could increase or decrease at any time. The area of risk is around the Lopevi Island. Volcanic gas and ashes can also affect surrounding islands that are exposed to trade winds.

 

Advice to all communities, villages, visitors and travel agencies to seriously consider this information.

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department will closely monitor this volcano activity. More information will be provided accordingly when necessary.

Nyamuragira , Democratic Republic of Congo :

The Mírová site detects a strong thermal signal on Nyamuragira which could correlate with volcanic activity. May be in the form of a new lava lake or lava flows in the summit caldera. These data are collected, but should be speculative.

The Nyamuragira is located in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and is one of the Virunga volcanoes. The volcano Nyiragongo its neighbor has retained for years an active lava lake.

    Wow!! Bogoslof is pretty much decimated! It is amazing how things can change in an instant. I am excited to see what will happen to this island in the next few months! You can actually tell where the crater is and see activity bubbling where the vent is. FACINATING!!
