Activity report of the Turrialba volcano:
9 January 2017

The tremor recorded by seismic stations in the upper Turrialba volcano reflects uninterrupted eruptive activity with a low emission column and changes in tremor amplitude indicating changes in the relative content of ash, gaz and aerosols.

The height of the emission column can not be measured throughout the day due to the permanent presence of rain and fog at the top of the volcano. Winds carried ash, gases and aerosols to the south-southwest during the night and southwest during the day.

Until then, no reports of ash falls have been received.

The volcano remains active and Indonesian scientists predict it might well continue to erupt during the new year (as it has for more than 3 years already).

Slow arrival of viscous magma accumulates at the lava dome in the summit, feeding lobes that descend on the southern and southeastern flank, crumble away, generating rockfalls and occasional small to moderate pyroclastic flows. At the same time, gas is released by vertical explosions such as one this morning that produced a plume that rose approx. 2000 m from the volcano.

Activity:
Presence of degassing of white fumaroles spreading low over the crater in a south-west direction. An average of 10 explosions per hour, generating gray columns at a height of between 4,300 and 4,600 meters (14,107 and 15,092 feet), scattered about 10 kilometers to the southwest, sometimes accompanied by weak rumblings, is reported. The incandescence presents pulses at an approximate height of 120 meters above the crater, generating moderate and strong avalanches on the outline of the crater.

Unrest continues at Bogoslof Volcano.
Two explosive eruptive events have occurred within the past 24 hours, the first at about 22:23 AKST (07:23 Jan 9 UTC) and a second event at 22:56 AKST (07:56 UTC); both events were detected in seismic and infrasound data. Since these two events, the level of seismicity has declined but remains above background and the volcano remains in a restless and unpredictable condition. Two volcanic clouds were produced by these events and were observed in satellite data. The second cloud was the larger of the two and it reached as high as 35,000 ft asl. Both plumes extended northwest of the Bogoslof Island. As a result of these events, AVO raised the Aviation Color Code to RED and Volcano Alert Level to WARNING where it remains as of today.

 

 

 

 

While Bogoslof volcano is in its current restless condition, it is possible for explosive activity to resume with little to no warning and volcanic clouds reaching flight levels may again be generated. AVO has no ground-based volcano monitoring equipment on Bogoslof volcano. We continue to monitor satellite images, information from the Worldwide Lightning Location Network pertaining to volcanic-cloud lightning, and data from seismic and infrasound instruments on nearby islands for indications of volcanic activity.

Activity Update:
All volcanoes monitored by CalVO using telemetered, real-time sensor networks exhibit normal levels of background seismicity and deformation. Volcanoes monitored include Mount Shasta, Medicine Lake Volcano, Clear Lake Volcanic Field, Lassen Volcanic Center, Long Valley Volcanic Region, Coso Volcanic Field, Ubehebe Craters, and Salton Buttes.

Observations for December 1, 2016 (0000h PST) through December 31, 2016 (2359h PDT):
Mt Shasta: One earthquake at or above M1.0 was detected (M1.46).
Medicine Lake: No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected.
Lassen Volcanic Center: No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected.
Clear Lake Volcanic Field: One earthquake at or above M1.0 was detected (M1.74). [Note: The typical high level of seismicity was observed under the Geysers steam field located at the western margin of CLVF. The largest event was M2.58].
Long Valley Volcanic Region: In Long Valley Caldera, 174 earthquakes of M1.0 or greater were detected, with the largest event registering M3.99. Many of these events occurred during a minor seismic swarm on December 13-14, 2016 about 2.5 miles east-southeast of the town of Mammoth Lakes. Three earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected in the Mono Craters region, with the largest registering M1.75. No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected under Mammoth Mountain. [Note: The typical high level of seismicity was observed south of the caldera in the Sierra Nevada range. The largest event registered M2.79].

Ubehebe Craters: No earthquakes at or above M1.0 were detected.
Salton Buttes: Thirteen earthquakes of M1.0 or greater were detected, with the largest registering M1.67.
Coso Volcanic Field: The typical high level of seismicity was observed, with 23 earthquakes M1.0 or greater. The largest registered M2.39.

The U.S. Geological Survey will continue to monitor these volcanoes closely and will issue additional updates and changes in alert level as warranted.
