Volcanic Activity Summary:
Seismic data from nearby islands detected a volcanic signal from Bogoslof volcano starting at 21:18 AKST today (6:18 UTC Jan 4) lasting ~5 minutes and a series of lightning strikes were identified by the World Wide Lightning Location Network. An eruption cloud as high as 33,000 ft has been detected in satellite data. AVO is therefore raising the Aviation Color Code for Bogoslof to RED and Volcano Alert Level to Warning.

Today morning, there has been an increase in the eruptive pattern of the volcano Fuego, which has remained under constant surveillance. Currently, according to OVFGO reports, there is an average of 4 to 6 explosions per hour of moderate character, generating an ash column of about 4,900 meters (16,076 feet) which is dispersed between 12 and 15 Kilometers of the crater to the west and south-west, as well as moderate avalanches on the outline of the crater.
Products of the explosive activity, there were reported ash falls in the communities of Panimaché I and II, Morelia, Hagia Sophia, Villa Palo Verde, Sangre de Cristo, San Pedro Yepocapa and possibly others at a greater distance in that direction.
According to the observations of the seismic activity, the energy of the explosions has considerably decreased, but it should not be excluded the possibility that an increase is present again in the hours or the days to come.

Weekly activity bulletin of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 27 December 2016 to 2 January 2017
Subject: Bulletin Activity level of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz.

The level of activity continues: at the level of  activity yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

As regards the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:

The various monitoring parameters show that the Nevado del Ruiz volcano remains unstable. During the last week, the predominance of seismicity related to fluid dynamics in the volcanic structure  was characterized by the appearance of earthquakes long-period (LP)   and Very long period (VLP) with different energy levels, several tremor pulses and fluid type earthquakes. This type of seismicity was mainly located in the Arenas crater and the southeast sector of the volcano. Some of these seismic signals have been associated with the emission of gases and ash into the atmosphere, as confirmed by the cameras installed in the volcano region and by the reports from officials of the Natural Park of Los Nevados (Pnnn) . The recording of new seismic signals of this type with higher energy levels which may be associated with the emission of gas and ash is not excluded. It is important to remember that ash processes can occur over several days and sometimes several times a day without involving an individual report for each episode.



As for the seismic activity associated with the fracturing of the volcanic rock beneath the volcano, the Nevado del Ruiz  showed a decrease in the number of earthquakes and the seismic energy released compared to the previous week. This seismicity has been located mainly in the South-West, North-East, North, Arenas crater and surrounding sectors, and to a lesser extent in the South-East sector of the volcano. The depths of the earthquakes were between 1.39 and 6.40 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.3 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake recorded on 2 January at 19:18 (local time) at 2.65 km depth, located south of Arenas crater.

Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and satellite images to determine changes in inclination, position and shape of the volcano, continues to record as the last months, inflation and intermittent inflation / deflation impulses possibly linked to the emission of gas and ashes.

The volcano continues to emit significant amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcanic zone and satellite images. In the tracking information provided by the Mirova portal, a low energy thermal anomaly associated with the Arenas crater, which was recorded on 29 December with 15 Mw, was identified.

The column of gas, steam and sometimes ash, reached a maximum height of 1200 m measured at the top of the volcano on 02 January 2017. The direction of dispersion of the column was in accordance with the prevailing wind regime in the Region, which during the week fluctuated between the Southwest and the Northwest.

The volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to activity level Amarillo.

Sabancaya , Peru :

The Scientific and Technical Committee recommended raising the alert level to orange for the Sabancaya.

The official statement suggests avoiding the approach of the volcano within a radius of less than 12 km due to the sharp increase in the number of explosions.
The Scientific and Technical Committee for Volcanic Risk Management in the Arequipa Region, composed of the INGEMMET Volcanological Observatory (OVI) and the South IGP Volcanological Observatory (OVS-IGP), issued a new official statement on the   Sabancaya eruptive activity. This report recommends raising the alert level from yellow to orange and avoiding approaching the volcano within 12 km due to the steady increase in the various parameters observed in volcanic monitoring between 8 November and  the 26th of December.

The Committee emphasizes a gradual increase in Sabancaya activity, which is reflected in the number of explosions per day (52 events) and reduced displacement parameters (DR) values (711 cm2 per day on average).
They also note that every day 14 earthquakes are recorded, hybrid type, indicating the appearance of new volumes of magma towards the surface.
In this line, the MIROVA satellite system detected various thermal anomalies consecutively on the Sabancaya, with values between 1 MW (megawatts) and 17 MW. The last of these documents took place on December 24 at 21:55 local time, showing the presence of a warm body near the surface.


With regard to ash emissions, the Committee notes that columns of gas and ash have been observed up to 4500 meters above the crater, which have spread over more than 40 km. Different villages in the valley of the Colca were touched, such as Maca, Achoma, Yanque and Chivay; However, in recent weeks the winds have brought ash to the west and northwest of Sabancaya, affecting also the districts of Huambo, Cabanaconde, Pinchollo, Lari, Tapay and Madrigal.
The Committee suggests that the government and local institutions implement contingency plans and be constantly informed through the monitoring reports published by the OVI and OVS-PGI.
