Volcanic Activity Summary:
An explosive eruption started at about 01:10 UTC 12/22 (16:10 AKST today) as seen in satellite and seismic data from neighboring islands and appeared to last for about 30 minutes. Cloud-top temperatures and wind direction suggest the cloud is as high as 35,000 ft asl, and is moving to the north. On the basis of this information, the Aviation Color Code is raised to RED and the Alert Level to WARNING.

AVO has no ground-based volcano monitoring equipment on Bogoslof volcano and is unable to provide a forecast of future eruptive activity. We will monitor satellite images and data from distant seismic and infrasound instruments for indications of significant explosive activity.

Bogoslof is the emergent summit of a submarine volcano that lies 40 km north of the main Aleutian arc. It rises 1500 m above the Bering Sea floor. Repeated construction and destruction of lava domes at different locations during historical time has greatly modified the appearance of this « Jack-in-the-Box » volcano and has introduced a confusing nomenclature applied during frequent visits of exploring expeditions. The present triangular-shaped, 0.75 x 2 km island consists of remnants of lava domes emplaced from 1796 to 1992. Castle Rock (Old Bogoslof) is a steep-sided pinnacle that is a remnant of a spine from the 1796 eruption. Fire Island (New Bogoslof), a small island located about 600 m NW of Bogoslof Island, is a remnant of a lava dome that was formed in 1883.

Turrialba , Costa Rica :

Activity Report of the Turrialba Volcano –
21 December 2016,

During the last 24 hours, the activity of the Turrialba volcano remains constant with a continuous tremor of small amplitude, associated with the eruptive activity.
In the morning, it was possible to observe composite gases, aerosols and ash columns reach a maximum height of 300 meters above the top of the volcano.

The direction of the prevailing winds is oriented towards the Southwest. These winds have variable speeds between 14.3 km / h and 57.7 km / h, according to data provided by the IMN meteorological station.
At the moment we have no report of ash falls or smell of sulfur and the clouds at the top of the volcano do not allow to see the emission material and the height of the plume.

PVMBG reported that during 1 January-19 December white-and-gray plumes rose as high as 1.2 km above the rim of Dukono’s Malupang Warirang crater, and were accompanied by roaring heard at the Dukono observation post 11 km away.

The eruption plume height generally fluctuated though was higher during periods in May and from late November into December; ashfall increased during the periods of higher plume heights, and was noted in villages within 11 km N, NE, and SW. Seismcity at Dukono remained high. The Alert Level remained at 2 (on a scale of 1-4). Residents and tourists were advised not to approach the crater within a radius of 2 km.

Fuego , Guatemala :

The ash column of the Fuego volcano erupted at a height of 5,200 meters (17,060 feet), traveling more than 18 kilometers to the south, southwest, west and northwest, Generating ash falls in neighboring areas on the communities of Panimache, Morelia, Hagia Sophia, Sangre de Cristo, San Pedro Yepocapa, Palo Verde, among other areas near the volcano, with the possibility that the ashes have a greater Distance of travel mainly to Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa.

The incandescent source reaches a height of 200-300 meters above the crater, feeding three lava flows, the first towards the Canyon of Santa Teresa, reaching a length of 2,500 meters, the second towards the Taniluyá canyon with a length of 2,000 meters and the third towards the Las Lajas Canyon with a length of 1,800 meters. Moderate to strong avalanches on the outline of the crater tend to reach vegetation.
We note the persistence of constant moderate to strong sounds like the engine of a locomotive, constant constant rumblings in the volcanic perimeter, generating strong shock waves that cause vibrations in the homes of communities located 12 kilometers from the volcano. The eruption maintains its energy and there is a possibility that pyroclastic flows are generated, so it is not recommended to stay in or near the main canyons.

Weekly activity bulletin of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, from 13 December to 19 December, 2016
The level of activity continues: level of activity yellow or (III): changes in the behavior of volcanic activity.

As regards the monitoring of the activity of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz, the Colombian Geological Survey reports that:

The various monitoring parameters showed that the volcano continues to exhibit unstable behavior. In the course of the last week, there has been an increase (in relation to previous weeks) in the activity of fluid events in the ducts of the volcanic structure, consequently an increase in the seismicity associated with such fluids.

Seismicity associated with rock fracturing within the volcano was found mainly in the northeast and southwest regions of the structure, in the Arenas Crater and its surroundings, and to a lesser extent in the South-east and North-west sectors, with depths of earthquakes varying between 0.6 and 6.9 km. The maximum magnitude recorded during the week was 1.2 ML (local magnitude), corresponding to an earthquake, on 17 December at 18:19 (local time), located 4.2 km northeast of the Arenas crater And at a depth of 2.4 km. The occurrence of two episodes of Drumbeat type, seismicity of very short duration and low energy levels, which were recorded on December 18 between 01 h 12 and 01 h23 (local time) stands out. This type of seismic activity is related to the process of rising domes at the surface.
Dome of lava: lava mound (molten rock) viscous that is placed on the emission duct of a volcano. The growth rate of domes can vary from a few hours to days, years, even hundreds of years, and volumes can reach tens of meters to several cubic kilometers.

Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics in the conduits of the volcanic structure was mainly characterized by the occurrence of long period (LP) and very long period (VLP) type earthquake events, several earthquake tremors , and in smaller proportion by pulses of volcanic tremor. Energy levels are variable, but have shown an increase over the previous weeks. This type of seismicity is mainly located in the Arenas crater and its surroundings, as well as in the South-East sector. Some of these seismic signals have been associated with the emission of gases and ash into the atmosphere, as confirmed by the cameras installed in the volcano region and reports from officials of the Natural Park of Los Nevados (Pnnn) . The recording of new seismic signals of this type with higher energy levels that may be associated with emissions of gases and ash is not excluded. It is important to remember that ash processes can occur over several days and sometimes several times a day without involving an individual report for each episode.

Volcanic deformation, measured from electronic inclinometers, Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and satellite images to determine changes in tilt, position and shape of the volcano, continues to record in the last few months, inflation and intermittent inflation / deflation impulses, possibly linked to the emission of gas and ash. Over the past week, these changes have been remarkable.

The volcano continues to emit significant amounts of water vapor and gases, including sulfur dioxide (SO2), as evidenced by the values obtained by the SCANDOAS stations installed in the volcanic zone and the satellite image. In the tracking information provided by the Mírová site , several thermal anomalies were identified near the Arenas crater, with recording a maximum value of 23 MW on 19 December.

The column of gas, steam and ash from time to time reached a maximum height of 1800 m measured on the top of the volcano on 19 December. The direction of the dispersion of the column was in line with the regime of prevailing winds in the region, which during the week had a dominant direction towards the Southwest.

The volcano Nevado del Ruiz continues to activity level Amarillo.
