Sabancaya , Peru :

Seismic activity:
During this period, the events Hybrid type (HIB associated with the ascent of magma material) showed a significant reduction in their number, averaging 3 HIB / day. However, the recorded energy of these events presented a significant increase on 6 October 2016, reaching a peak of 447 MJ of energy.

LP-type events (associated with volcanic fluids) have increased significantly, from an average of 39 LP / day , while in the previous report, there were only 23 LP / day (Report No. 29-2016 ). As regards their energy it is still at low levels.



The VTPS events (proximal Volcano-Tectonic , located less than 6 km from the crater) are rare , on average 33 VTP / day for the period. The magnitude of these recorded events is low, with an earthquake of a maximum magnitude of 2.5 ML.
The events Tremor type (TRE) continue to maintain a low level of occurrence, averaging 10 TRE / day. As regards their energy it is still at low levels.
The distribution of fracture or VT distal type events (EDV) located and localized continues to present two seismic foci: The first focus is located 14 km northeast of the crater of the Sabancaya.

In this area, an event is highlighted, at 3.5 ML, recorded on October 5 at a depth of 7 km. The second seismic focus is located 25 km North East of the Ichupampa crater area. In this group of events is highlighted an earthquake of 3.9 ML, recorded on October 3, with shallow depth of 8 km. The VTPS events (proximal Volcano-Tectonic , located less than 6 km from the crater), appeared in decrease in relation to the previous period. It is highlighted a regular amplitude of events (2.5 ML), registered on October 1 at a depth of 11 km.


Fumaroles activity:
Frequency: At this point (01-10 October), the activity of Sabancaya was constant and uninterrupted, with low emissions of high density fumaroles.
Colouring: These emissions were white (steam), color that dominated early in fumarolic activity of the volcano. Magmatic gases (bluish color) occur sporadically.
Height: This parameter showed an increase compared to the last half of September. At this stage of study, fumaroles are mounted up to 2000 meters high, approximately.

Satellite Surveillance:
SO2 anomalies: The satellite system « EOS Aura » GSDM NASA (http://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/) shows no significant value of density of SO2
Thermal anomalies:
The Mirova system (www.mirovaweb.it) has not detected thermal anomalies within this period for the Sabancaya.

Turrialba , Costa Rica :

Activity report of the Turrialba volcano.
October 21, 2016 – 17:00

During this day, the volcano remained with intermittent degassing, with an alternation of moderate emissions of steam and ash pulses with heights of about 500 m. Depending on wind direction, the dispersion of gas and ash were in the morning to the Northeast and in the afternoon to the Northwest and the Southwest. It has not been issued reports of ash falls or sulfur smell. The seismic signal was stable with an amplitude of tremor moderate with periods of greater amplitude.



Activity report of the Turrialba volcano

The 22/10/2016 at 22:38 local time, an eruption was recorded on the Turrialba volcano, with a column that rose to 1000 meters above the crater and up to 4340 m (14235.2 ft).

The observation of the deformation with inclinometer is made to Kensen station (altitude 878 m, south of Raung).

The observation of the deformation with a continuous record of the inclinometer of Kensen station, on September 29 , 2016 shows the value of the component of the X axis (inflation) while the component of the Y-axis shows the deflation. After November 23, 2016, the X and Y values are relatively stable (there had been a sudden change in the inclinometer values on 1 August 2016).




Based on visual observations, the activity observed of the G Raung comes in the form of issuance of a thin white smoke from solfatara, low pressure, with a height of 50 to 100 m.
Seismic activity is dominated by emission earthquakes and a relative decrease of the maximum amplitude of the tremor.
The deformation of the monitoring results indicate the absence of pressure exerted by the movement of magma in depth and at shallow depth.



Based on the analysis and evaluation, monitoring of seismic activity, deformation and visual observations and the potential danger of eruption, as of October 20, 2016 18:00 pm, the levels of activity of G. Raung is lowered from level II (waspada) to Level I (NORMAL).

If a significant increase in volcanic activity occurs, activity levels may be increased depending on the level of activity and threats.

The level of activity of the volcanic complex is at:

In addition, on the GNSS control lines crossing the complex, did not show higher deformation to 0.25 cm / month, the rate of change being stabilized since April 2016. In addition, the inclinometer data related to internal deformation trends of the volcano showed only small amplitude variations.
– Because of data transmission problems, due to adverse weather conditions in the sector, the DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectrometry) of the field station Chillán, located 3 km to the east northeast (ENE) of the active crater, did not record values of SO2.

No abnormalities in sulfur dioxide emissions (SO2) into the atmosphere from the volcanic complex system of the field were reported.
No thermal warning were reported in the area associated with the volcano according to data released by the MODVOLC and MODIS.

The persistence of the activity associated with fluids, as well as type of discrete tremors, added to the record of sporadic explosions suggest that the volcanic complex system of the Nevados de Chillan is still unstable. In this context, and despite the low energy explosions, it is likely that new explosive phases of phreatic type and / or phreatomagmatic of greater intensity of the currently active craters occur. Therefore, the volcanic alert remains at LEVEL YELLOW, and is considered as a high risk zone the area within 3 km from the active craters. Therefore, it is recommended to restrict access to this area.
